La Feria Resident Alejandro Paz’s dream became closer to reality this February. It all started with helping out people in the community. He was doing it all from home so he wanted to make a place where people could go for assistance. He started Project Pay It Forward just a few months ago and now has made his dream come true by making his non-profit a state certified organization. This month they also opened up a place where people could go for help. They are now located at 611 N. Main Street in La Feria. Project Pay It Forward accepts both monetary and non-monetary donations. From the donations they collect, they’re able to help people in need of food and clothing plus other items. The organization also helps with essential
bills if in dire need. With the donations he collects of clothing and other items he’s created a “thrift store” where sales of the items will go towards helping the less fortunate in the community. At their location they also help fill out paperwork, make copies and fax at no charge. It’s all monetary donations. Since the new location has been open, they helped with coats, blankets and heaters when the freezing weather came through. They also handed out meals to families in need of a warm meal. And recently they received some fruit in which they handed out to the community. Organizer Alejandro Paz says it’s a blessing to have so many people offer to donate and help. He hopes his Project Pay It Forward becomes larger so he could be able to help out other communities in the valley.
Residents of Texas are still feeling the effects of an intense winter storm that moved through the United States last week, which, The Associated Press reported, was responsible for at least 69 fatalities across the country -- and wildlife is suffering from the extreme cold as well, causing a turtle rescue to get underway in the state. A massive sea turtle rescue was underway in Texas after extreme weather in the state has led the sea creatures to become stunned by the cold. Sea turtles are ectothermic, or cold-blooded creatures, meaning they cannot regulate their own body heat. If the water they inhabit drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit like it did during the extreme cold in Texas this week, the turtles
develop hypothermia and become lethargic and unable to swim, according to the U.S. National Park Service. When the turtles enter the cold-stunned state, they float to the top of the water, which puts them in jeopardy of being struck by boats or the potential of washing ashore and becoming stranded on land. It also puts them at heightened risk for being preyed upon by natural predators. Texas Game Wardens in Cameron County rescued 141 sea turtles that fell victim to the cold weather in the Brownsville Ship Channel and surrounding bays. Cold-stunned sea turtles, frozen alligators fight for their lives after unprecedented cold snap Monday calling attention to the struggles the organization faced amid the winter storm. “We are undergoing one of the largest cold-stun events the island has seen in more than a decade,” Knight said. “Between yesterday and today, we’ve taken well over 500 cold-stunned turtles.” At 2 p.m. on Monday, the organization lost power, which has left their five, 25-55,000 gallon tanks holding the stunned turtles without heat -- putting the lives of the turtles at risk. “All of these efforts will
be in vain if we do not soon get power restored to our facility,” Knight said. On Wednesday, SpaceX arrived at the facility with giant generators that were strong enough to support the organization’s electrical needs that allowed the turtles in Sea Turtle, Inc’s care to warm back up. The following day, Knight posted another update and called the event “the largest cold-stun event in recorded history.” On Friday, the organization tweeted that the organization rescued over 4,900 turtles. Gulf World Marine
Institute in Panama City, Florida, regularly performs sea turtle rescues when the local turtles become cold-stunned. The staff at the institute told AccuWeather earlier this winter that they focus on getting the turtles to eat and swim again so they can be released back into the wild. Recovery for the turtles can take weeks if the turtle recovers quickly, but for others, it can take upwards of a year. “[We have] critically cold-stunned turtles,” the institute’s stranding coordinator, Lauren Albrit-
tan told AccuWeather’s National Reporter Kim Leoffler last month. “What that means is most likely they have secondary infections or injuries or other illnesses other than just being too cold.” Between December 2017 and January 2018, the Texas coast had its largest amount of coldstunned sea turtles to date with over 3,500 turtles. Sea turtles were not the only wildlife to be impacted by the extreme and unusual cold. David Arbour, an employee for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conser-
vation, posted photos to his Facebook account on Wednesday of a shocking sight -- alligators frozen in ice with just their snouts sticking out of the frozen bodies of water. The photos capture a natural phenomenon called “icing” and it is how the alligators keep themselves alive in the extreme weather, CNN reported. Icing is the reptiles version of hibernation in which they lower their metabolic rates, become lethargic and keep their snouts above the frozen water and allow the ice to freeze around
their snouts. “The gators won’t freeze if the water stays liquid,” Arbour said in a comment on his post. “Their snouts are just cartilage so freezing doesn’t hurt their snouts. They can still move and are aware of things.” Unlike the cold-stunned turtles, the alligators will survive without intervention from rescue organizations. Arbour explained in the comments that the alligators keep their snouts above the ice to breathe, and they will be able to survive the cold conditions.

By Gary Joiner Texas is thawing out. Farmers and ranchers are transitioning from a period of survival during the winter blast to a phase of recovery and repair. A lot of work lies ahead, and it will take time to get everything working again. Last week’s desperation and exhaustion are still fresh on their minds. Valuable lessons were learned, though. Farmers and ranchers will be better prepared for the next arctic freeze, whenever that may
come, because of what they endured this past week. The winter storm tested them in many ways. Created unexpected challenges. Required difficult decisions. It was tough to see the beauty in any of the snow as we still don’t know the magnitude of what the winter storm will cost Texas farmers and ranchers. But the spirit of neighbor-helping-neighbor in rural Texas was on full display when tempera-
tures were at their lowest. Stories of resiliency and compassion echoed during the freeze and continue as folks recover. Questions about the Texas power grid and what caused the power shortage will be addressed in the coming days in Austin. That’s the proper venue with policymakers who can affect change. In the meantime, farmers and ranchers point to the future and the opportunities ahead, focused on the job of growing more food and fiber.

Graveside Services will be at 3:00 PM, Monday, March 1, 2021, at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. Juan was born in La Feria, Texas to late Augustin and Maria Hernandez Navarrete. He graduated from La Feria High School in 1961. In December of 1961, he joined the United States Marines and served for 6 years. He was stationed in Nebo Marine Base in Barstow, CA. While in California he met Sally Chavez and they married on February 10, 1966. They shared 25 years together. After his time with the Marines, he worked 50 years in the Marine Warehouse in Barstow. He loved his job and made many friends over the years. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed taking his family hunting, camping and fishing. Juan loved the Lord and would often read his Bible along with reading the newspaper every day. Juan spent many years with Irene Ortiz before moving to Copperas Cove.

Lionettes open season with win over Valley View By KEVIN NARRO La Feria News LA FERIA-The Lionettes like the rest of the Rio Grande Valley are returning to their respective sports after last week’s winter storm that rocked the state and RGV. On Tuesday, the Lionettes picked up their first win of the regular season with a 5-1 win over Valley View. The Lionettes used a two run first inning and a two run third inning
to help build a 4-1 lead through three complete innings. The freshman duo of Hayaris Jimenez and pitcher Beanka Galan were bright spots in the win. At the plate, Jimenez went 2-for-2 with three RBI, one walk and a run scored. In the circle, Galan tossed a complete game. The freshman hurler allowed six hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned six Lady Tigers.

Business Feature By Gracie Garza My inspiration to stay strong and pursue what I do is because of my loving son, Abraham Longoria. My name is Graciela Garza ( Gracie ) from Brownsville, Texas, and I am a Family Service Counselor with the SCI Texas Funeral, Inc. – I work at a Dignity Memorial location in La Feria, Texas. This is my story. I am a proud mother of five beautiful children. My son Arnold Longoria/Los Fresnos, Agapito Longoria/ Los Fresnos, Abraham (Deceased), Alexis Longoria / Los Fresnos, and my only beautiful daughter, Ashley Ann Longoria also from Los Fresnos, Texas. My children and their spouses and families are my life— In 2009, my son Abraham Longoria was in an unfortunate automobile accident. He abruptly passed away, shattering my heart and soul. It is the worst pain a parent can endure. Nothing will ever take its place. Today, almost 12 years later, my heart still hurts. But one thing remains the same and I continue to hang on to it, it is “faith.” I believe the enormous love my son and I shared along with the joy and memories we created, and above all, with the grace of God, I have learned to live (physically) without my Abraham. But emotionally, I know he is an Angel from above and is watching over my family and me. It goes without saying that due to my son’s passing, I have become a stronger person. His loving memory has given me the strength I need to move
on with sincere compassion for others. So, today, I attribute my success as a Family Service Counselor at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home & Memorial Park – a Dignity Memorial location in La Feria, Texas to “him.” For over 20 years, I proudly process, coordinate, and pre-plan funeral arrangements for the many residents in the surrounding communities. Throughout my tenure as a family service counselor, I have worked at different locations (Corpus Christi--Rio Grande Valley). The Valley is, and will always be, close to my heart. I passionately believe my empathy and overall understanding of life play a special role in what I do. My heart melts every time when making those final arrangements for a loved one. Year after year, I am touched by many families and almost always it brings me back to my own situation when I was making those frightful funeral arrangements. I love what I do! My goal is to continue to facilitate and implement family funeral arrangement requests. My advice is to “preplan” this part of your life with whomever you choose. It is inevitable in life and certainly a “very important” piece to consider. Thank You to the families that have touched my heart! A Special Thanks to Abraham! It is because of You!
