Flowers & More by Joy in the Box is now open for business. The newly-opened flower shop, ran by Janie Torres, is more than two weeks into business in their 102 South Main Street location in La Feria. The flower shop features mainly flowers for sale and order but also has in stock lawn décor and signs, portraits for Valentine’s Day – which is free – balloon arches, and gift baskets. They also offer helium services. From the beginning, Torres was working as medical assistant before quitting her job simply because of the stress of the pandemic and for her personal safety. Torres said her and friend from church, who used to work for Lulu’s, a flower shop also in La Feria, had wanted to open a shop together. They started working from home in November out of a utility shed before looking for space to work out of in La Feria. Torres said she feels the shop offers to the residents as a way to offer a local experience.

Photos by Billy Watson. “We wanted to open locally because there’s things I feel like La Feria doesn’t have that they could benefit from,” Torres said. “They’re going to have to go to Harlingen or Weslaco. So, we starting looking for areas here for rent in La Feria, and we finally found this area here.” Everything started to fall into place, and Torres said it took a lot of prayer.

“I didn’t want to make any mistakes,” Torres said. “I didn’t want to invest incorrectly. I didn’t want to waste money and then spent money and later and be like, ‘I could’ve used that money somewhere else.’ So, it was very nerve-racking. Finally, we seeked the counseling of God, and we progressed. Torres said lawn décor has been a very popular item because of the pan-

demic and people using their creativity to safely have a parade or party. “Because of COVID right now, that’s very popular,” Torres said. “People aren’t doing their parties anymore. So, they’re doing these drive-by events, which are pretty cool, right? So, that’s been really good. That’s been something very useful in the community of La Feria.

Torres said she feels the services to the community is something La Feria can benefit from. “These are the services I feel La Feria needed,” Torres said. “The signs, the helium… I know we have another (flower shop) in town, but we could really use a second flower shop. There’s enough work for everybody. So, that’s what led us to opening up this place here.”

Ammunition sales see sharp rise By Tony Vindell

The selling of ammunition has become such a big business that the supply of such merchandise is not keeping up with the demand. In fact, ammo buyers have been waiting for hours to get hold of limited boxes of bullets for handguns and rifles. The Bass Pro Shops store in Harlingen is selling five boxes of bullets per customer while supplies last. Similarly, Academy Sporting Goods is selling three boxes of bullets per person. And on Tuesday, Jan.2, the store started limiting the number of shotgun shell boxes to three per person. A week earlier, any-

one could have bought a case of shells, containing 10 boxes. However, don’t expect to find your favorite handgun and rifle bullets on the shelves where they have been usually located. Ammo buyers have been forming long lines outside these stores and many of them leave disappointed after they are told that items are sold out. “I have been here since 5 a.m.,” said a man waiting outside Academy store in Brownsville on a day last week. “This time I am third in line.” But for Vicente Gonzalez, luck wasn’t on his side.” “I got here too late,” he said, “but I will probably come back again.”

Asked if the buying frenzy had anything to do with the change in administration now under the leadership of President Joe Biden, a Democrat, Gonzalez said he did not think so. “This has been going on since last year,” he said. “But it’s getting worse.” According to people familiar with the issue of guns and ammo, every time a Democrat wins a presidential election people get nervous and start buying guns and ammo over fears of more government control. Social media plays a role. A post going around now is alerting the public about a new bill, H.R 5717, saying it is being pushed by

Democrats right now. But how the bill actually reads and what the social media post states are very different. The bill is known as the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020.

La Feria will await their opponent in the playoffs, but for now, La Feria has found their groove and will enter the playoffs on a positive note. “We have been free from injury, and the girls

have been working hard,” head coach Delia Lopez said. “We have a few freshmen on the team, and they have come in and done a good job and have meshed well with the older girls.” La Feria had to replace some key pieces from last year’s team with household names like Jeno Ochoa and Aliyah Stewart. This year La Feria has leaned on their senior point guard Sabrina Castaneda. “Sabrina has become more confident in her role on the team as our point guard and team captain,” Lopez said. “She is the leader of the team, and she has been excellent. She is a good kid, respectful and she is doing well.” Along with Castandeda, senior Alexis Villareal has provided a defensive presence along with her speed. “Alexis has done a great job this year,” Lopez said. “She is quick and has done everything I have asked her to do. She has been a key part of the defense.”

LA FERIA – After last season getting cut short due to COVID-19, the La Feria Lions have plenty to be optimistic about in 2021. The Lions will return six to the lineup from last year’s club. Last year, La Feria lost their lone district game played before the season was shut down. “The kids were excited to be back on the field,” La Feria skipper Joe Vela said. “Last year, the season was cut short, and we didn’t get to finish. The seniors that are back are motivated. Right now, we are being positive and enjoying the season. We know that it can be shut down at any time, so we have been enjoying our time on the field. We go day by day.” Vela is in his second season as the Lions head coach but in his eighth season coaching at La Feria. Prior to La Feria, Vela was

the head baseball coach at Brownsville Rivera. On the field, senior Zander Gutierrez will serve as the team’s ace. The hard-throwing righty is currently nursing an injury but is expected to return to the lineup come district play. The speed of the Lions will be their strength in 2021. Their speed will most notably be in the outfield. Senior Dereck Perez will patrol center-field, junior Aaron Trevino will play left-field while freshman – and Aaron’s brother – Joaquin Trevino will look to make a splash in the outfield. “We have a lot of depth, that is a plus,” Vela said. “We will still have a challenging year because of (COVID-19). It is going to be different.” Senior Daniel Lopez will call the balls and strikes,

junior Orlando Morales will lobby between the mound and third base. Fellow junior David Garza will serve as a utility man and play shortstop, catcher and pitcher. Senior Dario Sanchez will play the corners of the infield and split time at first and third base. Gutierrez, Morales and Perez will look to be the team’s run-producers. The district is shaping up to be a competitive one with Hidalgo always in the mix along with Raymondville, who on paper have the most depth in their rotation. “It is going to be tough, it always is,” Vela said. “These are all established programs, and this year Raymondville will be tough to beat. They are tough with their pitching. I feel we can compete. If we are healthy with our pitching, we will be fine.”

A quiet little tapping sounded on the door and Christine lifted her head, her eyes shining as bright as stars with anticipation. “Hello, Jose,” she said as she opened the door and grinned like a silly schoolgirl. He had put on some weight during the year, but she didn’t mind. He was beautiful. She could hardly wait to get her hands on him. He stepped in and grabbed her. “Christine, my darling. How much I’ve needed you.” He bent and kissed her mouth. From the corner of her eye she watched Bryan drop his empty bottle and reach for a handful of chips. She put her

nose to Jose’s neck and sniffed deeply while her hands rubbed his spine. He smelled like he had ridden on the back of the wind—adventure, romance, woods. She loved that smell more than any of the colognes Bryan wore. “I’ve needed you too, Jose. I’m so glad you’re here.” She shut the door behind him. “So. Tell me what have you been up to?” She rubbed the front of his jacket. She was anxious to find what he had hidden under that cover. “Oh, just the same old stuff. I’ve flown to the moon and back, captured an evil spy ring, thereby saving an entire world from annihilation, rescued princesses and

puppies, sword fought with evil kings, you know.” He shrugged with a playful look in his eyes. “You know my life is nothing without you, my sweetest fan.” She looked in his face again, searching for that teasing light. Instead she found deep emotion. “Well . . .” Her words shriveled up and melted away as her hands caressed the front of his colorful jacket. Christine’s eyes darted to Bryan, who sat on the edge of the couch with a bowl of chips on the coffee table under him and the remote control in his hand. Then she turned back to Jose who nodded with a gentle subtleness that spoke volumes to her. I couldn’t wait for your hands to touch me again, his nod told her. I need your attention forever. Any waiting at all is too long for our little trysts. Christine felt heat rise to her cheeks. Her eyes darted away from Jose’s and she pulled him further into the room. “Let’s sit down before we disturb the coach here.” She smiled and waved her hand toward her husband. “Oh, no, we don’t want to disturb the coach.” He echoed playfully. As they settled on the sofa, Christine folded her

feet under her dress and sat in her little corner. Jose slowly drifted to the cushion between Christine and Bryan. As soon as his backside touched the couch his arm went around her shoulders and drew her closer to him. She could feel the angles of his side and the warmth of his skin and she knew this was where she belonged. “Tell me about your life during this past year,” he said. Bryan jumped off the couch tossing potato chips all around the room. “GOGOGOGOGO,” he screamed at the runner on the screen. “DON’T STOP TO LOOK AROUND, JUST GO.” “Oh, nothing exciting—just boring old me. I have some new silver strands in my hair, a stronger pair of glasses, a new prescription for my knee and hand pains.” “’New silver strands of hair.’ I love that. Very poetic. You should write a story about a woman whose silver hairs are worth money.” “I thought about dyeing them, but I decided I had earned every one of them, so I should show them off.” “THAT’S IT! THAT’S IT! THAT’S IT!” Bryan’s shouts at the
