DEAR FRIENDS,

Impact: It is what defines The Joffrey Ballet. Since our founding, impact continues to guide our every decision—the worlds we draw audiences into, how we open those doors, and why we move forward.

This year, a historic $5 million gift from The Grainger Foundation reshaped what’s possible, endowing and renaming the Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet. The result is a stronger, more accessible training pipeline—one that expands scholarships, reinforces holistic student support, and invites everyone, regardless of financial circumstance, to imagine a future here.

Onstage, the Company met the moment with its most ambitious season yet. The year began with the U.S. premiere of Atonement, continued through the shared tradition of The Nutcracker, and introduced Golden Hour, featuring the world premiere of Dani Rowe’s Princess and the Pea. Performances came to a triumphant close with Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the largest production in Joffrey history. As the first American ballet company to present Wheeldon’s Wonderland, the Joffrey brought Chicago audiences a work of rare scale and theatrical force.

Looking back proved just as powerful. The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S., the Company’s first retrospective exhibition, opened at the New York Public Library. Drawn from the complete Joffrey archive, which was acquired by the Jerome Robbins Dance Division as its largest acquisition in more than a decade, the exhibition secured the Joffrey’s story firmly within the history of American dance.

Access remained central. The Women’s Board launched JoffreyNext, a new fundraising event supporting arts education and advancing the next generation. That momentum carried into the Joffrey Celebration, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which raised $3 million for Joffrey for All—providing free tickets for hundreds of community partners, students, and families across Chicago to experience dance live on the Lyric Opera House stage.

In this report, you will see that impact, in the end, lives through people. We are deeply grateful to our community of artists, staff, board members, donors, partners, and audiences whose commitment gives the Joffrey its strength. Their belief ensures our work continues, with clarity and purpose, into the years ahead.

Sincerely,

The Mary B. Galvin

The Joffrey Ballet’s 69th season delivered storytelling at its most ambitious. Under The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE, the Company presented captivating narratives that spanned memory and redemption, reimagined classics, and fantastical escape—each work underscoring the transformative artistry that has defined the Joffrey for nearly seven decades.

The season opened with the U.S. premiere of Cathy Marston’s Atonement, a sweeping adaptation of Ian McEwan’s acclaimed novel-turned-Academy Award®-winning film, followed by the return of Christopher Wheeldon’s beloved The Nutcracker, transporting audiences to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The mixed repertoire program, Golden Hour, bathed the Lyric in warmth and splendor, featuring the world premieres of Dani Rowe’s Princess and the Pea and Yuri Possokhov’s Andante, and audience favorites by Cathy Marston and Nicolas Blanc.

The season closed with the largest production ever mounted by the Joffrey: the Chicago premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. As the first American ballet company to bring Wheeldon’s Wonderland to life, the Joffrey led audiences down the rabbit hole into Lewis Carroll’s fantastical world—a spectacular finale to an extraordinary season.

A Historic Gift

THE GRAINGER FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT

A defining investment in the future of dance, the Joffrey received a transformative $5 million gift from The Grainger Foundation, endowing and renaming the Joffrey Academy of Dance to the Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet.

The Grainger Academy ranks among the most comprehensive training programs in the country. Scholarships for Studio Company dancers include tuition, housing, dancewear, physical therapy, and stipends—supporting artists holistically as they prepare for professional careers. Today, one-third of Joffrey Company Artists are Academy graduates—a powerful testament to the strength of the pipeline.

With The Grainger Foundation’s landmark gift, the Grainger Academy will build upon its reputation as a world-class school that welcomes anyone with the passion, commitment, and talent to study dance. Scholarships and financial aid awards provide young people of all backgrounds with access to dance education, ensuring that no student is denied an opportunity based on their ability to pay.

About The Grainger Foundation

Established in 1949 by William Wallace Grainger, founder of W.W. Grainger, Inc., The Grainger Foundation supports educational, medical, cultural, and human-service organizations. Over the past eight years, the Foundation’s partnership with the Joffrey has funded Academy scholarships, strengthened the organization’s endowment, and supported major artistic initiatives, including Christopher Wheeldon’s Making a New American Nutcracker documentary. Their historic gift builds on that legacy, securing the future of the Grainger Academy and positioning the Joffrey as a global leader in dance education.

The Future Starts Here

Completing my second full year as Abbott Academy Director, this season presented an opportunity to strengthen the foundation of the Grainger Academy. With the extraordinary endowment from The Grainger Foundation, we enter a new chapter. This investment expands scholarships, deepens holistic student support, and furthers our mission to create an inclusive space for anyone with the passion to dance.

Planning for 2024–2025 fiscal year began with a comprehensive review of every program. A clear priority emerged: welcoming more male-identifying students at an early age. Our weekly Boys Dance class, led by Company Artists Zachary Manske and Davide Oldano, offers high-level training alongside visible role models for what a professional path can look like. We also increased scholarships in the Pre-Professional Program, directing resources to students demonstrating commitment and readiness for advanced training.

Winning Works celebrated its 15th anniversary, underscoring the Grainger Academy’s lasting influence on the next generation of artists. Alum Houston Thomas returned to create a commissioned work for the Joffrey Studio Company, performed at Ravinia alongside the Joffrey professional Company.

Studio Company dancers and Ballet Trainees also performed with the Reading Symphony Orchestra, gaining invaluable touring experience.

Excellence and access move forward together. Every day, I see young artists step into their potential with focus and courage. The future of the Joffrey is built in our studios— and that future is strong.

Boys in Ballet

At the Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet, students receive world-class training that builds strength, discipline, and artistry—skills that prepare them for success in dance and beyond. In a new Boys in Ballet initiative, the Joffrey aims to challenge outdated stereotypes by re-framing dance as a rigorous, athletic art form.

The initiative welcomed special guest Kyler Gordon of the Chicago Bears, who credits his early dance training with developing the agility and coordination that fuel his success on the field. Gordon spent the day with Grainger Academy students and observed Company class, reinforcing the powerful connection between dance and athletic excellence.

The

15th Anniversary of Winning Works

MARCH 14–23, 2025

For fifteen years, Winning Works has been one of the Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet’s most enduring artistic commitments. What began as a single performance has expanded into nine this season, a measure of both the program’s influence and its continued urgency.

On this special anniversary, Winning Works culminated in five world premieres drawn from the Joffrey’s national call for emerging choreographers.

Competition winners—Karley Childress, Roderick George (Recipient of the Zach Lazar Winning Works Fellowship), Shota Miyoshi, Alejandro Perez, and Keelan Whitmore—created original works for the Grainger Academy Conservatory, Trainees, and Joffrey Studio Company. Together, their distinct artistic perspectives shaped a resonant anniversary program that captivated audiences at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s Edlis Neeson Theater.

As Winning Works enters its next fifteen years, its impact builds on a legacy that has launched 51 careers of emerging choreographers from around the world—continuing the Joffrey’s longstanding role as a guiding force in the evolution of dance.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Dance Belongs to Everyone

Dance belongs to everyone. By meeting individuals where they are, Joffrey’s Community Engagement programs broaden access while building confidence, creativity, and connection at every stage of life.

Over the past year, that impact took clear and measurable form. Exelon Strobel dancers stepped onto the Lyric Opera House stage at the inaugural JoffreyNext fundraiser, an unforgettable milestone. At the same time, Extensions Pro I and II students came together for an end-of-year program that illustrated the meaningful continuum into our After School Matters program.

Our Dancing with Parkinson’s program advanced in both reach and leadership. The first Midwest Dance for PD conference, hosted at Joffrey Tower, trained more than two dozen new teaching artists—strengthening our capacity to serve individuals living with Parkinson’s disease across the region. In schools, partnerships deepened as Marcus Garvey Elementary School opened its first dedicated dance studio, made possible by the Women’s Board Community Engagement Committee, and students from nine public schools gathered for the annual Middle School Dance Club performance. Beyond Chicago, teaching artists extended the Joffrey’s mission through residencies and community classes.

Across every program, our focus remains the same: creating opportunities that endure. Thank you to the artists, partners, and supporters who make this work possible.

University of South Carolina Residency

MARCH 17–APRIL 5, 2025

For three weeks, the Joffrey brought dance, music, and community engagement programs to the University of South Carolina. Twenty-six Company Artists joined The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE, Rehearsal Director Nicolas Blanc, Music Director Scott Speck, Abbott Academy Director Suzanne Lopez, and Community Engagement Director Linda Swayze for a residency at USC’s Betsy Blackmon Dance Program and School of Music.

Programs assembled artists, students, and faculty across disciplines. Nicolas Blanc developed his new work, Les Bœufoons, while Suzanne Lopez staged two Gerald Arpino works on USC students. Company Artist Xavier Núñez set his Winning Works choreography Camelia for USC’s gala, and Scott Speck participated in guest lectures. Company Artists Ao Wang, Valentino Moneglia, and Amanda Assucena led masterclasses, sharing the technique and artistry central to the Joffrey.

Bringing dance into the broader community, Linda Swayze led a Dancing with Parkinson’s class for the Columbia Parkinson’s Support Group, while Community Engagement Coordinator Michael Smith taught public classes and led joint sessions with USC’s School of Dance. Free movement classes at Soda City Market Plaza invited residents to experience dance firsthand.

Performances at the Koger Center for the Arts concluded the engagement, featuring Joffrey Company Artists, USC students, and the USC Symphony Orchestra. It was collaboration at its finest—a celebration of artistry and partnership that embodies the heart of the Joffrey’s mission.

JOFFREY RETROSPECTIVE

The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S.

PRESENTED BY THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY

Four years ago, the Jerome Robbins Dance Division acquired the complete Joffrey archive— it’s largest acquisition in a decade. In September 2024, the New York Public Library unveiled the collection in the Company’s first major retrospective, The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S., examining nearly 70 years of the Joffrey’s role in American ballet.

Curated by Julia Foulkes, the exhibition posed foundational questions—Who is ballet for? What role should it play today?—These ideas

were explored through archival materials, photographs, and costumes representing pivotal moments across the Company’s history.

Tracing the Joffrey’s pioneering journey from its New York origins to its rebirth in Chicago, the retrospective highlighted a legacy marked by artistic risk, cultural relevance, and expanded access. The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S. framed the Company as a defining force and an active participant in the ongoing evolution of dance.

Opening Reception

The opening reception welcomed more than 300 members of the Joffrey family, spanning seven decades of the Company’s history. Remarks by The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE, President and CEO Greg Cameron, exhibition curator Julia Foulkes, and New York Public Library Executive Director Roberta Pereira marked the occasion. The evening reflected the Joffrey’s enduring community of artists, colleagues, and supporters brought together through a shared history and purpose.

The Jane Ellen Murray Foundation

The Jane Ellen Murray Foundation has demonstrated a more than decade-long commitment to advancing artistic innovation at The Joffrey Ballet. Most recently, the foundation served as Costume Sponsor for Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Over the years, it has helped bring more than a dozen major productions to life, including Don Quixote (2011), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2017), the world premiere of Anna Karenina (2018), The Times Are Racing (2019), and Frankenstein (2023). The foundation’s philanthropy reflects the creative spirit and artistic curiosity of its founder, Jane Ellen Murray. Her life and career embodied a deep appreciation for imagination, storytelling, and design—values that continue to shape the foundation’s support of the Joffrey’s most ambitious work.

Patrick M. Gallagher epitomizes the distinct, wholehearted spirit with which Chicagoans approach philanthropy. Curiosity and a sense of civic duty led him to join the Joffrey Board of Directors in 2017. Since then, Patrick has helped bring the expertise and partnership of Gallagher, including consulting services, insurance brokerage, retirement plan consulting, workers’ compensation advisement, and corporate sponsorships to support the Joffrey.

During his tenure, Patrick has served as Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee from 2019 to 2024. He has been a steadfast champion of arts access and community engagement, including Gallagher’s Presenting Sponsorship of the Joffrey for All free performance in Millennium Park in 2024, hosting the Grainger Academy’s free performance of Rita Finds Home at Gallagher Way, and returning as Presenting Sponsor of the 2025 Joffrey Celebration, which included donating hundreds of tickets for Chicago non-profit partners to attend Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Maureen Dwyer Smith

Sonja Fischer

Maureen Dwyer Smith was a founding member of the Joffrey Board of Directors in 1995 and established the Women’s Board in 2002. As its inaugural President, Maureen ushered in a new era of philanthropic support, ensuring the organization’s continued growth. During her tenure as Board Chair from 2007 to 2009, the Company celebrated the opening of Joffrey Tower and appointed The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE. In 2023, she was rightfully named a Life Director in recognition of her contributions.

Maureen’s love for dance will live on through the Maureen Dwyer Smith Scholarship, an endowed fund established in honor of her 80 th birthday and supported by ITW, Northern Trust, family, and friends. Awarded annually to a student of the Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet, the scholarship embodies her commitment to nurturing future generations of artists.

More than a leader, Maureen was a friend, mentor, and champion. We are eternally grateful for her impact and will honor her legacy by continuing the work she so passionately supported.

Sonja Fischer was a devoted supporter whose generosity strengthened the Joffrey at every level. Through the Sonja & Conrad Fischer Foundation, she provided leadership support for the Company’s endowment, the Academy Scholarship Fund, annual Celebration events, and major productions—including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Her partnership advanced both artistic ambition and institutional stability, reinforcing the vision of The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE.

Sonja brought a deep appreciation for the transformative power of dance. Her support reflected a thoughtful commitment to excellence and access. We remember Sonja with profound gratitude.

Christian Holder is regarded as one of the most iconic dancers in the history of the Joffrey Company. A leading artist from 1966 to 1979, he shaped a pivotal era for the Company with his commanding stage presence and unforgettable artistry. Christian’s repertoire spanned the breadth of 20 th -century choreography, including his portrayal of Death in The Green Table— a defining example of his dramatic authority and technical precision.

Christian’s creative life extended well beyond the stage as a choreographer, cabaret singer, painter, theater director, and playwright.

Herb Migdoll was an extraordinary artist whose photography captured the evolving story of The Joffrey Ballet for more than five decades. Herb joined the Joffrey in 1968 as Company photographer and later as design director. His iconic images appeared on the covers of The New York Times, LIFE, Time, and Dance Magazine, and reside in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.

Through his landmark book Dancers Dancing and his 25year tenure as Art Director of Dance Magazine, he made the ephemeral beauty of dance everlasting. Herb’s work preserved the heart of a company in motion: its triumphs, transformations, and spirit.

OCTOBER 22, 2024

JoffreyNext marked a new approach to Women’s Board fundraising—an inaugural event designed to advance education, elevate student artistry, and spotlight the next generation of artists.

The program placed impact front and center, with performances by Community Engagement and Grainger Academy students. Featured works included This Town by Carly Liegel, Woman by Michelle Skiba, and For Mr. Ramsey Lewis by 2024 Winning Works Choreographer Houston Thomas—a vivid tribute connecting Chicago’s jazz and dance legacies.

The evening closed with a conversation between Houston Thomas and The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE, offering insight into the creative process and the pathway from early training to the professional stage. In classic Women’s Board style, it was a standout night.

With thanks to JoffreyNext Producing Sponsors D. Elizabeth Price, Make It Better Foundation, and Robert’s Pizza and Dough Company.

WONDERLAND WONDERLAND INTO INTO

Joffrey Celebration

MAY 31, 2025

Inspired by the season finale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the Joffrey Celebration honoring Anne L. Kaplan and Fred Eychaner transported guests through the looking glass. Partygoers entered a keyhole-shaped portal into a world turned upside down—complete with Living Frames, a Parisian Caterpillar, Swinging Tulips, and Lampshade Gals.

The evening emerged with something extraordinary: $3 million raised for Joffrey for All—expanding access to performances of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for Chicago’s youth and community partners.

Curators of Magic

Anne Kaplan and Fred Eychaner are champions of The Joffrey Ballet. As Board Chair, Anne’s tenacious leadership drove recordbreaking Joffrey for All fundraising. She spearheaded the Crisis Stabilization Fund, and advanced the Company’s global profile through international touring. Fred’s visionary philanthropy navigated the organization through defining moments, from its move to Chicago to the building of Joffrey Tower. Anne and Fred’s legacy is everlasting—they are true curators of magic.

WITH GRATITUDE

The Joffrey Ballet gratefully acknowledges Celebration sponsors for bringing this unforgettable evening to life.
