TIPS TO CREATIVELY (AND SUSTAINABLY!) WRAP YOUR GIFTS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON I don’t know about you, but one of my favourite things to do over the holidays is to pour myself a glass (or two!) of wine, crank up the holiday tunes and take my time wrapping gifts for under the tree. Over the years, I have learned a LOT when it comes to sustainable packaging and how to make gifts look amazing all while being eco-friendly! I am so excited to share my top 5 tips to help you get creative with your gift wrapping this holiday season!

1 WHITE OR BROWN KRAFT PAPER
I love using kraft paper to wrap gifts because it is 100% recyclable, and generally comes at a lower price point than regular holiday wrapping paper. You can really get creative with this paper as it acts like a blank canvas! Have some fun and use rubber stamps to decorate the wrapping or even try your hand at drawing a fun design on the paper!

This one goes without saying! Rather than using plastic, there are so many amazing brands that have created beautiful, reusable, cloth bags for shopping at the market or store. I love the idea of using these bags for gift giving over the holiday season. They are eco-friendly and generally offer cute designs and colours too! It truly is the gift that keeps on giving!
Something that I love to do is to make the packaging a part of the gift itself! I recommend picking up some cute baskets or boxes from the thrift store (or repurposing something you already have at home) and putting items inside of them. You can also use mason jars which are cute and can be repurposed afterward for years to come!

Designing from the heart
Whatever you put your heart into will flourish. That saying summarizes the story of Julia Lefeaux, the creative mind behind Jackson Rowe, a vegan, cruelty-free, and female-owned company that I am proud to include in the Winter 2021 Jilly Box! Encouraged by generations of strong women, Julia conquered her fears and pursued a career in fashion, ultimately founding Jackson Rowe back in 2012 (thanks to Julia’s mom who gave her the strength to go after her dreams and push her forward!). The brand name was inspired by her grandparents, Jackson and Rose, and the beautiful love that they shared. It fills me with happiness to see that this Canadian brand, founded in a small downtown Vancouver apartment, is growing full of authenticity and kindness. What were your first steps to follow a career in fashion? I didn't know from the get-go that fashion was the career path I would choose. I was very insecure growing up. I always felt like I wasn't smart enough to be good at anything; little did I know that I had an undiagnosed learning disability (dyslexia). I really struggled. I credit my mom for seeing the spark in me. She saw that I had an eye for fashion and clothing, and she enrolled me in a fashion arts program at 20 years old. From there, my confidence started to grow, and I envisioned a future for myself.

You talk a lot about the difference it makes when you put your heart into something. How do you apply this in your business? For me, putting your heart into something is so much more than just doing a job and getting it done. I strongly believe that you should surround yourself with people you would invite over for dinner, people you respect and whose values align with yours. At Jackson Rowe, we have curated a team of individuals who are

more than capable of getting the job done with the mindset that we are all in this together. We are a family, and we support each other. I believe we are all living life with our hearts leading the way.

What tips would you give for those who are just starting a business? You can do anything you put your heart into. It's easy to get discouraged, but you have to visualize your dreams and just keep going no matter what roadblocks get in your way. Ask for help when you need it, and listen to others' opinions and feedback with an open heart and mind. My mantra is: Things will always be ok. Put yourself out there and don't give up.

What piece of clothing do you like designing the most? My favourite piece of clothing to design is a dress. I love an easy-flowing piece that you can style either casually or chic. I love putting women in dresses that give them confidence and make them feel like their authentic, beautiful selves.

How was the designing process for the Scholar Shacket with Jillian Harris? We were thrilled when Team Jilly asked us to be a part of the Winter Jilly Box, and even more excited when we got to work with Jillian firsthand in designing this piece. Her passion and eye for detail are really inspiring. I love how she puts her Jilly touch on everything. I would have never thought to add elbow patches on a shacket, but naturally, Jillian took things up a notch by adding her keen eye for detail.

How would you style the Scholar Shacket? This is a tricky one, as there are so many great ways! Personally, my style is super casual, so I would wear it with leather leggings, Converse sneakers, and a neutral oversized hoodie and a cap, or layered with jeans and a sweater. However, I also LOVE IT paired with a skirt and a tee or belted as a dress.

What are the main things people should look out for when shopping for clothes? The source is important. As a small business owner, our loyal customers are the most important thing in the world. Local, independently-owned shops and brands need customers to show up, support and shop small.

What are your plans for 2022? On the business front, we are moving into our new office/warehouse! We are excited to have a retail space so our customers can shop in person, try things on and get to know us. We are also excited to expand our men's collection and work with various charities and fundraisers through our Little Rowe collection to help support kids and families in our community.

WITH LEO AND ANNIE Kids always bring so much magic and fun to the holiday season! There is so much excitement buzzing through their little bodies! It all starts shaking down on December 1st in our house, how about in yours? We have some newer traditions and some from when we were kiddos that we like to bring back year after year! One of those being the advent calendar! I like to collect little gifts or treats leading up to the holiday season to put inside the advent calendar for Leo and Annie to find on the mornings leading up to the big day! You could have a theme to yours or have little random wonders, notes or good deeds inside each pocket for your family to do together. Another cozy classic that I love on the night before Christmas is curling up with the family in our matching PJs!
W I T H T H E FA M I LY We have a pretty big family and we all love to get together over the holidays if we can! There is a lot of celebrating and family time that gets us all into the spirit. We love to gather in the kitchen to make some of our favourite family traditions; like our Boomba's famous beet rolls that we would always beg her to make! Family dinners and gatherings are really what the holidays are all about for us! We have so many good times getting together in the kitchen and baking up a storm. In addition to that, we love all the holiday classics like ice skating and campfires and I can't forget about family photos with the big guy!

W I T H M YS E L F It’s so important to schedule in some ‘me time’ over the busy holiday season. One of my favourite ways to do this is to put the kids to bed, pour myself a big glass of red wine, light some candles, and slip into a bubble bath while listening to holiday classics!
WITH THE TEAM Some of the traditions we love here at Team Jilly and Team Jilly Box are getting together, having some fun, reconnecting and getting out in our communities to support families in need and our favourite local charities. We are always on the go with our individual ‘to do’ lists throughout the year, so we really try and make time to slow down, connect and enjoy some fun team building activities around the holidays. We love being able to support local small businesses that bring us together and share their expertise with our team through fun workshops. In the past we have done gingerbread decorating with The Cake Mama, wreath making with Melinda at A New Leaf Floral Design and indulging in dinner at Old Vines Restaurant. All in all, the holidays are about being with family and friends and showing our gratitude for those around us!
