Giving Israel’s Next Generation the Opportunity to Learn, Grow and Thrive Educational inequality in Israel’s peripheral regions has long been an uphill battle. A child growing up in the northern city of Akko rarely has access to the same resources and opportunities as a child raised in the more prosperous centre. Since the horrific events of October 7, 2023, this divide has escalated into a full-scale educational emergency. For nearly three years, children in Israel’s volatile North have endured an unyielding security crisis. Months of relentless cross-
border strikes, sudden school closures, and constant emergency sirens have stolen millions of hours of schooling and fractured the academic year. Recent studies show that up to 68% of students in the region now suffer from trauma, severe anxiety, and a loss of focus in class. While more families in the centre of the country can afford private tutoring to catch up, parents facing economic hardship in the North simply cannot. Without immediate intervention, these children risk being left behind.
Bridging the Divide in Akko JNF UK built the House of Excellence in Akko to directly address this widening gap. Today, more than 700 children and teenagers a year rely on the House of Excellence as a safe haven from the chaos. Every morning, primary school pupils engage in inspiring, early-learning technology programmes. Every afternoon, teenagers receive completely free, high-level tutoring in Maths, Science, and English, alongside mentorship and emotional support to rebuild their confidence.
