At the time of going to press the IDF is ready to respond to any eventuality regarding Iran as the prospect of a US military strike against the regime increases. Rely only on official IDF statements and avoid spreading rumours that may cause public concern. At this stage, there is no change in the defense policy. The IDF is prepared and will continue to act responsibly to protect the security of the citizens of Israel. I will provide updates if needed should anything change.” Continued on page 4

4 NEWS Continued from page 1 US President Donald Trump has vowed “very strong action” against Iran if they execute anti-government protesters. US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has confirmed over 2,400 anti-government protesters killed despite an internet blackout. Iran has warned it will hit US targets in the Middle East and Israel. Senior Israeli officials reportedly told media outlets that if Iran hits Israel after US strikes the Iranian regime will “not survive”. According to online reports last night call-up notices to reserve soldiers have begun. The Israeli air force, military intelligence and Northern Command are on high alert. Germany’s Lufthansa Group have reportedly informed employees to leave Israel. There are also reports Italian and Austrian Airlines have begun cancelling flights to Israel. The US and UK, meantime, have reduced personnel at Al-Udeid air base in Qatar as a precautionary measure in response to regional tensions. On Tuesday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Iranian authorities would “pay a big price” for the killings, and urged people to “keep protesting”. ‘I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS
TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 WAY. MIGA!!!.’ Trump also announced 25% tariffs on any country trading with Iran. In other headline news, the US has launched Phase Two of President Trump’s 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza. Witkoff, announced the move yesterday, stating: “The transition from a cease-fire to demilitarisation, technocratic governance, and reconstruction. Phase 2 establishes a technocratic Palestinian transitional administration in Gaza, the National Committee for Administration of Gaza (NCAG), and begins full demilitarisation and reconstruction of Gaza, primarily the disarmament of all unauthorized personnel.” Hamas is expected to fully comply, including the immediate return of the last deceased hostage, Staff Sergeant Ran Gvili. Failure will result in severe consequences. Phase saw the return of all living hostages and remains of 27 of the 28-eight deceased hostages. The mother of Gvili responded to Witkoff’s announcement: “We spoke with the Prime Minister, who made it clear to us that bringing Rani back is foremost in our minds.” The Hostages and Missing Families Forum and Tikva Forum warned that transitioning to Phase Two before the return of Gvili could cause his body to disappear forever.

West Midlands Police and Crime Mahmood added that the force had Commissioner Simon Foster has that carried out little engagement with the authority. Jewish community and none with the Mahmood had been handed a report Birmingham Jewish community. While Guildford has issued an apology, Gideon Falter, Campaign Against Antisemitism Chief Executive, said: “West Midlands Police chiefs victim-blamed Jews, lied repeatedly and then attempted a cover up. Their story has now unravelled and clearly the Chief Constable and other police chiefs in the force must be fired if they do not resign. This is an institutional problem, not a crisis about one man. “As for Guildford himself, he may have committed the offence of Misconduct in Public Office, and this report should be passed to the Crown Prosecution Service West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford PHOTO: HOUSE OF COMMONS/PA for expedited consideration.” BY DAVID SAFFER
Falter added: “Police timidity and cowardice in the face of Islamist intimidation is only half the story. Focus must now turn to the Islamists themselves, which individuals, groups and radical mosques participated in this campaign? What influence have they amassed over the local authority, safety advisory group and police? What action, if any, has the Charity Commission taken against religious organisations with charitable status hosting extremist preachers? What action if any have the police taken against those conspiring to commit violence against Jewish fans and Israeli players? “What has happened in Birmingham is a test case for the British state. It is no exaggeration to say that what happens next could well determine the future health of British society if we do not stand up to blatant radicalism like this.” Action Against Discrimination chairman Jonathan Metliss said Guildford had acted “unprofessionally”. “Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood must ensure Guildford is immediately removed from office,” he raged. “His continuation in office is untenable and an affront to the UK Jewish community.” The National Jewish Assembly and We Believe In Israel partnership are “appalled” police relied on false, AI-generated material, including invented match data, to justify this discriminatory decision. the police chief after news initially broke. “Public safety assessments must be grounded in verified evidence and rigorous human judgment, not defective automated outputs or the lobbying of vocal, ideologically driven political actors such as Independent MP Ayoub Khan, whose anti-Israel interventions have been widely noted,” noted CAA. “There is simply no way senior police officers can remain in post after being repeatedly exposed for lying and conjuring up fictitious information to justify their decision, and this most recent AI debacle only confirms it. In a world where lies, misinformation, and misreporting are repeatedly fed to us through social media and the news, in ways that adversely impact the Jewish community and others, this speaks more broadly to the increasingly worrying role of AI in spreading fake news. This is a lesson to the police and other institutions, that using AI to cut corners for incredibly high-stake decisions has deeply harmful consequences.” West Midlands Police had been condemned by Jewish leaders over its handling of the European tie in November when Maccabi were pressured into not accepting tickets after toxic media coverage followed police classifying the game “high risk” from Safety Advisory Group advice to Villa. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar labelled the decision “shameful”, CAA called for a judicial review.

UK tourism to Israel surges BY ADAM MOSES
UK tourism to Israel is on the road to recovery after the industry was devastated following the 10/7 terror attack in 2023. The Israel Ministry of Tourism in the UK this week announced positive visitor numbers for 2025. There were 104,000 UK visitors to Israel in 2025, up from 79,000 in 2024, as the destination continues a post-conflict recovery. December 2025 saw 10,000 British visitors compared to 6,500 a year earlier. There is positive momentum heading into 2026. Israel’s hotel sector is responding with substantial investment with 19 properties launching across the country. The expansion includes local chains and international brands introducing projects worth billions of shekels. Among new projects is The InterContinental Jerusalem and Mount Zion Hotel. In Tel Aviv, Nof HaReches Hotel has added rooms, conference facilities and a rooftop infinity pool. THE YACHT in Herzliya Pituach, Nahariya’s new Shoval Hotel, Makhtesh Ramon in Mitzpe Ramon, Mount Carmel’s Gordonia Zikhron Ya’akov are also
amongst hotel expansion. Michael Ben Baruch, Director of the UK Ministry of Tourism, said: “Israel’s appeal as a travel destination is undeniable and unbreakable. Many travellers in the UK, particularly from the Jewish and Christian communities have shown their solidarity with Israel and made a visit in 2025, attracted by its unique sites, incredible hospitality as well as friend and family connections. “These figures demonstrate the enduring appeal of Israel to British travellers and reflect growing confidence in the destination. The increase in December visitors shows particularly strong momentum as we enter 2026, and the hotel investment pipeline positions Israel to accommodate continued growth from the UK market.” The UK contributed to Israel’s broader tourism recovery. Total arrivals reached 1.318 million in 2025, up 37% from 962,000 in 2024. But, visitor numbers remain 71% below the peak year of 2019, when Israel welcomed 4.552 million international tourists. Revenue from inbound tourism in 2025 is estimated to be 7.8 billion NIS (£1.6 billion). Tourists spend an average of $1,711 per stay in Israel, excluding flight costs.

New Living Volunteer Archive Launched to Preserve Volunteer Stories for Future Generations On Sunday, the Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN) hosted its annual awards ceremony, A Lifetime of Volunteering – JVN Awards 2025, at The Grove Hotel, bringing together 350 guests to celebrate the extraordinary contribution of volunteers across the UK Jewish community. The event also marked the official launch of the JVN Living Volunteer Archive - an evolving, multimedia installation designed to honour and preserve the stories of volunteers for generations to come. The Archive debuted with a special focus on lifetime achievers, whose volunteering journeys were exhibited through video and print. JVN was honoured to welcome a number of distinguished guests, including His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE CSTJ, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Rabbi Josh Levy, Co-Lead of Progressive Judaism, and Dame Maureen Lipman.
This year, JVN honoured 91 winners across four award categories: • Volunteer of the Year • Volunteer Team of the Year • Young Adult Volunteer of the Year • Lifetime Achievement Award An independent judging panel also selected Outstanding Achievers in three categories. The Outstanding Award recipients were: • Outstanding Volunteer of the Year: Helen Stone, New Citizens’ Gateway • Outstanding Volunteer Team of the Year: Volunteers from Manchester Jewish Museum, and Israel Tour Madrichim 2025 from UJIA • Outstanding Young Adult Volunteer of the Year: Natasha Lush, Kisharon PHOTO: EMMA ZIFF PHOTOGRAPHY Langdon A total of 28 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients were recognised this year, with their volunteering stories forming the heart of the Living Volunteer Archive exhibition. The ceremony also paid special tribute
to JVN’s Life President, Ros Preston OBE, who celebrated her 90th birthday this year and was honoured for a lifetime of service to the community. Speakers on the day included JVN Chair Clive Nathan, JVN President and owner of The Grove Hotel Daniel Levy, and JVN Chief Executive Nicky Goldman. Reflecting on the day, Nicky Goldman said: “What a special day it was yesterday, celebrating volunteers across our community. The atmosphere in the room was wholehearted and supportive, cheering those who give so much to others. The particular focus this year on lifetime achievers, starting with the brand-new Living Archive Exhibit of their volunteering stories, was inspiring. We were especially delighted to celebrate JVN’s Life President, Ros Preston OBE, for her lifetime of volunteering and her 90th birthday. Thank you to all those who volunteer. You make a difference in the
world.” Clive Nathan, JVN Chair said “The event was truly inspiring. We came together to honour the unsung heroes who give their time and energy just because they want to and they can. Not because they seek recognition The Jewish Volunteering Network plays a vital role in connecting willing hands with meaningful opportunities, and I’m proud to play a part in making volunteering accessible and impactful. The JVN team delivered the best awards yet! That is what everyone told me afterwards!” The JVN Awards continue to shine a light on the vital role volunteers play in strengthening charities, supporting communities and inspiring others to get involved.

The UAE’s Warning to Britain: The Cost of Tolerating the Muslim Brotherhood BY STEVE WINSTON
The United Arab Emirates’ decision to remove UK universities from eligibility for Emirati student financing is not a minor administrative adjustment, it is a political signal. The inference from Abu Dhabi, that Britain’s refusal to proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood has become untenable, should prompt serious reflection in Whitehall. What the UK continues to treat as a manageable ideological current is increasingly viewed by key partners as a source of instability, radicalisation, and strategic risk. For more than a decade, successive British governments have argued that the Muslim Brotherhood is best addressed through engagement and monitoring rather than prohibition. This position has been justified on grounds of liberal pluralism and the absence of direct organisational violence on UK soil. Yet it overlooks the Brotherhood’s distinctive operating model, influence without visibility, mobilisation without formal power, and ideological shaping through ostensibly respectable civic channels. In Britain, the Brotherhood does not
operate as a conventional political movement. Its presence is diffuse, embedded within networks of charities, advocacy organisations, student groups, legal campaigners, and media commentators. Its strategy is incremental, shaping narratives, framing grievances, and embedding Islamist political assumptions within the language of rights and social justice. Over time, this approach erodes democratic norms and weakens social cohesion, particularly when left unchallenged. These dynamics have been especially visible since the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza. Britain has witnessed sustained protests marked not merely by criticism of Israeli policy, but by a broader ideological framing that questions Israel’s legitimacy, recasts Zionism as uniquely malign, and presents Western democracies as morally compromised accomplices. While many participants were motivated by genuine humanitarian concern, the coherence and persistence of this narrative reflect the influence of established Islamist campaigning networks. Hamas itself cannot be separated from this discussion. It is an acknowledged offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, shaped by the same ideological foundations and strategic outlook. To treat the
Brotherhood as a benign domestic actor while ignoring its role in legitimising and sustaining Hamas’s worldview is to draw a distinction without substance. This is not about suppressing criticism of Israel, which is legitimate, but about recognising how ideological ecosystems operate across borders. Nor is the Brotherhood’s geopolitical positioning as ambiguous as sometimes claimed. Although rooted in Sunni Islamism and formally distinct from Iran’s Shi’a theocracy, the Brotherhood has repeatedly aligned with Iranian interests when expedient, most notably through shared support for Hamas and a common hostility toward Western influence in the Middle East. Ideological differences have rarely prevented tactical alignment. At a moment when Iran itself is facing widespread unrest against the Khamenei regime, driven by economic pressure and deep social discontent, the West should consider which movements it allows to operate freely within its own borders. Even if this unrest leads to political change in Tehran, that shift, while geopolitically significant, is unlikely on its own to produce a structurally safer Middle East. Beyond Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood remains the most influential transnational ideological movement, shaping regional and international security dynamics through sustained, largely legal forms of influence. It is no coincidence that several Arab and Muslim majority states, including Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, have banned the Muslim Brotherhood
outright. These decisions were not taken lightly, nor were they merely authoritarian reflexes. They reflect conclusions drawn from experience, that the Brotherhood’s objective is not reform within existing systems, but the gradual subordination of the state to an Islamist political project. Britain’s continued exceptionalism on this issue is increasingly difficult to defend. To allies in the Gulf, the UK’s position appears less like principled liberalism and more like strategic complacency. The UAE’s decision should therefore be read not as retaliation, but as recalibration, a recognition that ideological tolerance carries diplomatic and security consequences. Proscription alone will not resolve the challenge posed by political Islam, nor should it be pursued lightly. But Britain can no longer plausibly argue that the Muslim Brotherhood represents a neutral presence within its civic landscape. The UAE’s warning is clear, and others may follow. Civil society organisations, including the National Jewish Assembly working alongside We Believe In Israel, are now pressing the government to confront this reality directly, alongside broader concerns about groups such as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The question for ministers is no longer whether scrutiny is justified, but how long the UK can afford to delay decisive action.
directed at a Jewish Israeli space. This is not about government policy. It is about who is deemed welcome, and who is not, on Britain’s streets. London must not become a place where Jewish or Israeli businesses are told to “get out”, nor where Jewish or Israeli presence must justify itself. The involvement of a self described anti Zionist Jewish group does not lessen the antisemitic impact. Jews do not lose the right to safety because others claim to speak in their name. Despite commitments to act against language calling for Israel’s eradication,
police were seen standing immobile. Roger Walters, Chairman of the National Jewish Assembly and Director of WBII, said: “Is this Berlin in 1936, or London’s future, where Jews are told to leave and the authorities look away?” What occurred at Miznon was not a protest in any serious democratic sense. It was coercive and intended to make ordinary life impossible. Britain cannot function if harassment is allowed to masquerade as activism. Targeting Jewish and Israeli owned businesses is not solidarity. It is collective punishment. “We will not accept the normalisation of intimidation as protest. Civilians buying dinner must not pay the price for
political grievances,” said Catherine Perez Shakdam, Executive Director of WBII. “These so called activists reveal the naked hypocrisy of the pro Palestinian movement,” said Steve Winston, Managing Director of the NJA. “They screech about Israel, yet remain silent as Iranians and others across the Middle East suffer, showing their outrage is selective, performative, and morally bankrupt.” Authorities must enforce the law firmly. Antisemitism does not become acceptable because it is directed at Israel or Israelis. The National Jewish Assembly (NJA), a new partner organisation of We Believe In Israel (WBII)
When is Antisemitism acceptable The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) and We Believe in Israel (WBII) strongly condemn the anti Israel demonstration outside Miznon in Notting Hill. Targeting a lawful business because it is Israeli owned and frequented by Israelis and British Jews is not legitimate protest. It is intimidation. Describing such conduct as political expression does not change the reality for staff, customers, and the wider Jewish community: harassment, fear, and exclusion. Chants and slogans calling for Israel’s eradication carry a clear meaning when

maggid shiur who leads the largest Daf Yomi shiur in the world, with approximately forty thousand participants globally. Reb Eli has undoubtedly created a powerful wave of excitement around Daf Yomi and Torah learning in general. His innovative use of AI, combined with his clarity, warmth, and dynamic delivery, truly sets him apart. The Shabbaton also featured world-renowned speakers, including Nachman Seltzer, Rabbi Yoel Gold, and Rabbi Ari Ben Shushan. Rabbi Yoel Gold’s spellbinding presentation of his story about rediscovering the Ketores held the audience completely transfixed on Shabbos afternoon. The weekend culminated in a stunning Melaveh Malkah, reflecting the joy and spirituality of the event, with beautiful singing and music filling the evening. The inspiring speeches ensured that all who attended left with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to learning. As Reb Eli so powerfully reminded everyone, the most important lesson is about consistency: it’s not about the Daf — it’s about the Yomi.

Jewish Child’s Day Fund created to secure longterm support for vulnerable Jewish children Jewish Child’s Day (JCD), the UK’s leading grant giving Jewish children’s charity today announced a strategic development designed to safeguard its mission for generations to come. Since the very first Jewish Child’s Day appeal in 1947, Jewish Child’s Day has existed with one clear purpose: to transform the lives of Jewish children in need, wherever they are. Jewish Child’s Day (JCD) is entering a new chapter. To continue supporting the most vulnerable Jewish children long into the future - efficiently, responsibly, and sustainably - JCD will be moving from an active, staffed charity to a dedicated fund. From February 2026, JCD will no longer operate a staffed office or run events and campaigns. Instead, we are establishing the Jewish Child’s Day Fund: a future-focused fund designed to safeguard our grant-giving and maximise our impact. This important change will maximise the impact of donations we receive in the future to ensure they are allocated to children and projects that need it most and deserve it most. To administer these grants efficiently and professionally, JCD will work with UJIA, who will manage the process under the guidance of a dedicated Jewish

Here They Are Now, Entertainers; This Season’s Passover Programme Entertainment Lineup Every year, Pesach program organizers endeavor to give their guests something amazing; something no one else has. They want their guests to experience something unique and special to keep them coming back, year after year. I would think that successful programs, at a certain point, I don’t know- maybe they grow complacent and comfortable. After all, they have a good thing going, right? The truth is that while they may have figured out a formula that has proven successful in the past, they don’t, for a minute, take for granted that guests’ returning this year is a sure fire bet. Like the airlines say, “ we know you have a choice when flying, and we thank you for flying with us.” They are aware of the fact that there are a bunch of programs out there, and prospective attendees, be they veterans of the Pesach program scene or first-timers, have their pick of a multitude of options. As such, most programs do their very best to keep serving up the very best of what the Jewish entertainment world has to offer. From influencers and celebrities, to musicians and comedians, Pesach 2026 is going big when it comes to entertainment. Once upon a time, we learned of up-and-coming personalities in the Jewish world from hearing someone guest-speak at a shul or event, or even ( gasp) on a recording, like a tape or CD. How times have changed… More and more we are learning about the world from social media and streaming. Program organizers understand this, and they have recruited top voices from all over the community. The individuals behind these voices started small and progressively amassed large followings on social media, podcasts and other internet media. They’ve shared their perspectives, thoughts and experiences, and in large part due to their charisma, knowledge and relatability, have become Jewish household names which entertain and inspire our community. At Kosherica Atlantis in the Bahamas, and Leisure Time Tours in Palm Beach, Florida, guests can hear from and meet with Aliza Ben Shalom. Ben Shalom gained international notoriety when she hosted Netflix’s hugely popular show, “Jewish Matchmaking.” In addition to co-hosting her “Matchmaker, matchmaker” podcast, Aliza’s resume includes her roles as a dating coach, speaker and author. At Kosherica Atlantis and Leisure Time Tours in Tampa, Florida, guests can hear and learn from Adina Shoshana, formerly known on social media as the “Non-Jewish Nanny,” or Adriana Fernandez.
After a few years of sharing her journey of nannying in and learning about the Orthodox community, she, now going by Adina Shoshana and having now undergone an Orthodox conversion, is now known as the “Now-Jewish Nanny.” With her playful, yet respectful approach to Judaism, her social media accounts have attracted a large following over the past few years. With her ability to entertain and inspire both Jews and non-Jews alike, guests at either of these programs are sure to learn a lot from her unique and evolving perspective on both her journey and the Jewish community. Followers and fans of Charlene Aminoff and her signature blonde sheitel can find her at Bruce Backman’s Pesach
in the Southeast, in Houston, Texas. A sought-after speaker about emunah and nurturing one’s relationship with Hashem, Charlene is also the founder and CEO of Gali’s Couture Wigs. Via her charm and steadfast faith in and gratitude towards Hashem, has built her brand on family and faith, especially in the face of life’s challenges. Speaking of life’s challenges, let’s think back to Fiddler on the Roof. When asked about a blessing for Czar, the rabbi responds, “Of course! May God bless and keep the Tsar... far away from us!” When it comes to making people laugh in the face of difficulty, let’s face it- Jews wrote the book. As a people, one of the things that has enabled us to persevere through our many challenging times is our ability to laugh. Luckily, this year Passover program guests will be delighting in the comedy stylings of the Jewish community’s current top comedians. Guests of Playa Mujeres, Mexico’s Royal Passover, Miami’s Ram Destinations and Israel’s Keter Travel will be enjoying viral social media sensation and veteran comedian Yochai Sponder this Pesach. Currently touring his “Self-Loving Jew”
show, his keen observations on self love, identity and faith have left crowds laughing all over the world. At Royal Passover, you can also catch a show by comedian, actor and writer Elon Gold. Gold’s one-hour Netflix special, “ Elon Gold: Chosen and Taken,” currently streaming on Prime, was received with wide acclaim, and YouTube clips from his various shows are shared all over the globe. If you want to get an idea of how funny he is before the holiday, check out his podcast, “Stars of David,” currently the #1 Jewish podcast in America. Dovi Neuberger, and his signature chill affect will be performing at both of Diamond Club’s Passover programs in Riviera Maya, Mexico, as well as Stamford, Connecticut’s Pesach with Bordeaux. Named “Best Jewish Comedian” of 2025 by The Jewish Link, Dovi’s wit and understanding of the frum community have earned him growing popularity and a loyal following on social media. Michael Rapaport is a veteran comedian and actor who has most recently popped up on social media and the internet for his vocal defense of Israel, especially since October 7. He will be performing at Leisure Time Tours Passover programs in Tampa and Palm Beach, Florida. Rapaport is also the host of the worldwide phenomenon “I Am Rapaport” Stereo Podcast, as well as having been in over 60 movies and many shows including Friends, Life of Beth and more, and is a seasoned performer and staunch advocate for Jews and Israel. You can find the final comedian on our list at Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Majestic Passover program. Ami Kozak, whose viral videos have taken social media by storm, is a comedian, impressionist, podcaster and musician. Ami has garnered millions of views on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X and has been featured on Fox News, Sky News and more. Between his comedy, impressions and other talents, guests of Majestic are in for a real treat. Not to brag, but we’ve been saving the music section for last here, because well, it’s a HUGE Pesach for musical entertainment. Program organizers have literally pulled out all of the stops to wow their guests with the top shelf musical entertainment of the Jewish world. From Ishay Ribo and Omer Adam to Tal Vaknin, Simcha Leiner, Mordechai Shapiro. They’ve got Benny Friedman and Abraham Fried. Joey Newcomb and Simcha Leiner. They’ve got Chassidim, Sephardim, Israelis and Americans. This year’s all-star
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
musical line up is set to wow guests. The only downside is that you just can’t see them all. Currently one of Israel’s hottest musicians, Omer Adam will be performing at Playa Mujeres, Mexico’s Royal Passover and Cancun at Mamre Travel. Known for his unique combination of Mizrahi, Mediterranean and Western musical styles, combined with his commanding stage presence has earned him increasing popularity and sold out shows all over the world. His performances are sure to be not only the entertainment highlight of their respective programs, but also experiences of a lifetime. One of my family’s favorite singers, Ishay Ribo will be gracing the RAM Destinations stage in Miami Florida. A Sephardic Orthodox Jew, Ribo’s soulful and religious sound have earned him a unique following among both religious and secular Israeli audiences, as well as a vast international audience. His performances at Ram Destinations are sure to be a bright light in a sea of amazing entertainment, and they should be excited. Here are some of the other amazing talents popping up this season: • Mordechai Shapiro and 8th Day playing at Al Kanfei Nisharim, The Pesach Experience in Stamford, Connecticut • Simcha Leiner at Leisure Time Tours in Palm Beach, Florida and at Miami, Florida’s Lasko Getaways • Tal Vaknin at Leisure Time Tours programs in Tampa, Florida and Chesapeake Bay, Maryland • Joey Newcomb and Avraham Fried at Bruce Backman’s Pesach in the Southeast in Houston, Texas • Joey Newcomb at Palm Springs, California’s Upscale Legacy • Benny Friedman at Stamford, Connecticut’s FFH • Shulem Lemmer and Nissim Saal at Riviera Maya, Mexico’s Diamond Club Waldorf Astoria and St. Regis Edition programs It’s almost as if someone took a bunch of top social media feeds and Spotify playlists names and placed them all on Pesach programs. Almost all of these have made it onto mine, which means they likely have made it onto yours. From influencers to comedians and musicians, program organizers have booked some of the frum Jewish world’s top performers and personalities. Again there are so many incredible options, you just have to pick. Rabbinic Leaders Gather at Heaton Park Shul to Affirm Commitment to Jewish Life in the UK More than 100 Rabbis and Rebbetzins from across the UK gathered at Heaton Park Shul this week for the Aleinu Outreach Conference, a day dedicated to leadership, learning and renewed resolve to strengthen Jewish life in challenging times. The choice of location added an extra poignancy to the conference given the events of last Yom Kippur. The conference brought together rabbinic figures and communal leaders to reflect on the responsibilities of leadership today and to affirm a shared commitment to building confident, vibrant Jewish communities across the country.
Rabbi Walker, Heaton Park addressing attendees
Opening the day, Rabbi Yehuda Leib Wittler of Shaarei Chaim, Manchester, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the evolving challenges and opportunities facing outreach and communal leadership in this generation. Drawing on experience and insight, he emphasised the need for sensitivity, clarity and courage, alongside an unwavering belief in the potential of Jewish growth and connection in the UK. The programme included a series of breakout sessions addressing contemporary issues in halacha and Jewish thought. Dayan Yonasan Hool explored halachic questions that have emerged since October 7th, offering guidance to leaders navigating a changed communal landscape, while Dayan Eliezer Zobin addressed the responsibility of supporting
students and congregants with strength, perspective and faith during uncertain times. A central theme running throughout the day was the importance of rabbinic unity and collaboration. Alongside the formal sessions, significant time was dedicated to networking and conversation, enabling rabbis and rebbetzins to connect, share experiences and strengthen professional and personal bonds. A reflective moment of the conference included a study session dedicated to the memory of Melvyn Kravitz and Adrian Daulby who were murdered on Yom Kippur, underscoring the role of Jewish learning as a source of continuity, meaning and resilience. One of the most impactful moments came from Rabbi Daniel Walker, whose address highlighted the moral courage and emotional strength demanded of
communal leaders today, reinforcing the responsibility to lead with honesty, compassion and resolve.
The conference concluded with an uplifting participatory musical performance, leaving participants energised and reaffirmed in their mission. Aleinu is a joint initiative of Seed, JLE, RCUS and Jewish Futures, and the gathering at Heaton Park Shul reflected a shared message echoed throughout the day: the response to challenge is leadership, unity and a renewed commitment to building Jewish life in the UK.
The Courage to Stand Alone BY MICHAL UNTERSLAK
The Talmud tells us that Avraham Avinu was called an Ivri, literally, “one from the other side”, because the entire world stood on one side, and he stood on the other. This wasn’t just being different for its own sake. Avraham had discovered something the world had forgotten: that truth exists whether people agree with it or not. We need this memory now. Our phones buzz constantly with everyone else’s opinions. We’re drowning in other people’s beliefs, their choices, their moral positions. The pressure isn’t always obvious. It builds slowly, like dust gathering. We start to mistake what’s familiar for what’s true, what’s popular for what’s right, what’s repeated loudly for what’s obviously correct. Think about Lot in Sodom. The Midrash describes a city so attached to its own corruption that it made cruelty into law. Welcoming strangers was a crime; hurting the weak was acceptable. What’s striking isn’t just the evil, but how confident they were about it. Sodom
didn’t just allow immorality. It celebrated it, built a system around it, made it the foundation of how society worked. The entire city gathered at Lot’s door, absolutely certain that he was the one doing something wrong. Lot had something they didn’t: a memory of a different way to live, learned in Avraham’s home. When the angels came, he didn’t worry about what his neighbours would think. He didn’t take a poll. The Torah says vayiftzar - he urged them, almost forced them, to accept his hospitality. Against all of Sodom’s certainty, he held onto the quiet knowledge of what his uncle had taught him. This is where we are now. Maybe not in Sodom’s obvious evil, but in something more dangerous: a world where we can’t tell the difference between real belief and just going along with everyone else. We’ve watched respected institutions change their positions overnight, following public opinion like a flag in the wind. We’ve seen people we looked up to suddenly discover new principles that perfectly match whatever became acceptable to say last week. The question isn’t whether we’re influenced. We are. The question is
whether we notice it. Whether we’ve created enough quiet in our own minds to tell the difference between what we’ve actually thought about and what we’ve just absorbed. Between what we believe because we’ve examined it and what we believe because everyone around us does. This requires something hard: being willing to be alone with an idea. Holding a position when everyone else has moved on. Saying “I don’t know” when everyone expects certainty. Remembering that the Torah’s claim on us doesn’t depend on whether it’s popular. The Rambam writes that what matters about an idea isn’t whether many people believe it, but whether it’s actually true. Truth, he says, exists whether humans agree with it or not. This is a bold claim in a world that treats feeling strongly about something as enough, that confuses passionate belief with being right. We inherit from Avraham not just his answers, but his approach: the courage to stand alone with an idea, to be the Ivri, the one on the other side. Not because being alone is good in itself, but because sometimes everyone else is simply wrong. Sometimes the whole world faces
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
one direction, and truth is behind us. This isn’t about being contrary for no reason or cutting ourselves off. It’s something harder: thinking clearly when clear thinking costs us something. Staying true to our principles when principles have become inconvenient. Understanding that standing with Gd sometimes means standing against almost everyone, including, maybe especially, the people whose approval we want most. The test of our time probably won’t be dramatic. It will come quietly, in small moments of social pressure, in the gap between what we know is right and what we’re expected to go along with. In those moments, we can remember: we come from people who stood on the other side. Michal Unterslak recently moved to London from Israel and is an educator in the Young Professionals department of Aish UK. She is a mother to three adorable children and has a passion for exploring relationships, connection, and personal growth through a Torah lens, with a focus on emotional awareness and meaningful, values-driven relationships.

Perfect Present! BY RABBI JONATHAN TAWIL
Its always so exciting to open up gifts, they come in all shapes and sizes. There are two ways in which a person can pass on a valuable article to someone he loves. The first is through a present the second is through inheritance – Yerusha. Receiving a present is great and seeing as it is normally given out of appreciation could potentially have greater value than an inheritance. The advantage of an inheritance over a present is that no matter whether one really deserves it or not, everyone directly connected to the deceased automatically receives a portion. Interestingly when Hashem tells Moshe in this weeks Parsha that He is going to give the land of Israel to Am Yisrael, He seems to use both languages; -Venatati Otah Lachem Morasha Ani Hashem – I will GIVE to you as an INHERITANCE I am Hashem. Why does the Pasuk use the form of both giving, and inheritance, surely they have opposing meanings? Let’s take a look at the word for inheritance that is used here. The Hebrew word for inheritance is YERUSHAH. The word used here is MORASHAH. The former means something you get. The latter implies something you give. The word Morasha appears in the Torah in reference to only two things. The first is Eretz Yisrael (as quoted in the Pasuk in our Parsha) and the second is regarding the Torah itself. The first words Jewish children are taught to say are “Torah Tziva Lanu Moshe, Morasha Kehilat Yaakov” -The Torah that Moshe commanded to us is an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov. The usual word for heritage, “Yerusha “, is an heir one receives from his parents. “Morasha” a causative form, means that which a person causes to be inherited by his children. The Torah inherited from the past has to be passed on to the future. The children should regard it not only as received by tradition, and look backwards, but as something which they should use to build the future. Chazal teach a tradition based on the Pasuk, “This Torah will not depart from your mouth or the mouths of you children or the mouths of your grandchildren forever” Yehoshua (1:8): If three generations are committed to learning Torah, then the Torah will never leave that person’s family. The Gemara Bava Metzia (85a) summarizes this idea with the expression
“The Torah returns to its host” (Torah Chozeret Al Achasania Shelah). Someone once asked the Chofetz Chaim that we know people who descend from many generations of Torah scholars who are themselves ignorant of Torah. Unfortunately, we see millions of Jews that fit into this category. There are families that bear the name of prestigious Gedolim [Torah greats], who today may not even know what an Aleph looks like. What then does it mean “Torah Chozeret Al Achsania Shelah”? The Chofetz Chaim explained that the Gemara’s analogy is very precise. The Torah is like a guest seeking its host’s home. Sometimes a guest knocks on one’s door. If no one answers the door, the guest will not come in. “Torah Chozeret Al Achasania Shelah” means that if Torah has been in a family for three generations, the Torah will come “knocking on that family’s door” in future generations. But still, the younger generation must open the door for the guest. The guest must still be invited in by each new generation. We can now understand why the Pasuk states that Eretz Yisrael and the Torah are both a present (Regarding the Torah the Pasuk states:Vayiten El Moshe Kechaloto Ledaber…..Shnei Luchot Habrit (31:18).) and an inheritance. The inheritance the Pasuk refers to is an inheritance that faces both the past and the future; it is a Morasha and not a Yerusha. Hashem gave us these precious presents to enjoy. Their enjoyment will depend on our appreciation, and our merit. They are also an inheritance, since the beginning of time they have been designated to us. Yet we are told that they are not just any inheritance, they are a Morasha. Whilst they can be enjoyed by us, we have a duty to pass them down to our children. We must teach them the importance of Torah, the importance and holiness of Eretz Yisrael. A Chasid once approached the Rizhiner Rebbe on return from a pilgrimage to Eretz Yisrael. He came to the Rebbe and told him that although he had been to the Holy land, he had not really sensed anything especially holy about it. The Rebbe responded with the following Mashal. He said that a blanket is meant to provide warmth and comfort. The degree of warmth that it can provide, however, is dependant completely on the heat of the person being covered. Thus, if a dead person is covered with a blanket, it will not warm him. The same thing is true about

Eretz Yisrael. If one comes to Eretz Yisrael and does not sense the Kedusha, it suggests the fact that there is a spiritual coldness that pervades his life. One who comes here and feels the warmth can be assured that the fire burns within him and is rekindled in the right surroundings. Let us work to make our Torah and our Land, a Morasha, let us lead by example, and pass this Kedusha to generations to come. Shabbat Shalom

32 JUDAISM
ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com HOW OPEN IS YOUR MIND?
Dear Rabbi I consider myself a veery open-minded individual. But I must ask, how can you possibly continue to defend Israel when human-rights organisations, the media, and activists overwhelmingly agree it is committing genocide and apartheid? As someone who claims to stand for ethics and justice, don’t you see that Zionism now openly contradicts feminism, LGBTQ rights, anti-colonialism, and international law? Isn’t it time Jews themselves admitted that Zionism has been exposed as indefensible? Rowan Dear Rowan You can cry about “international law” when America drags a dictator out of bed to face justice yet call it “resistance” when terrorists storm a sovereign state. You can object to Israel recognising Somaliland, which is a real place, while demanding recognition for Palestine, a concept no one can geographically, historically, or politically define - and be unable to name a single Palestinian leader before Yasser Arafat. You can be a feminist and swear by “believe all women,” and suddenly become sceptical when Jewish women bring evidence of abuse by Hamas. You can chant “from the river to the sea” without knowing which river, which sea, or why Jews hear it as a threat. You can wave the banner of liberalism

and LGBTQ while backing Islamists who would happily kill you for holding those views. You can demand a two-state solution while ignoring that one side has rejected it violently, every single time. You can insist you’re “anti-Zionist, not antisemitic,” while opposing the only Jewish haven on Earth and the fact that ninety percent of Jews are Zionists. You can watch live footage of October 7th and still accuse the victims of genocide. You can stare at a world map, see vast Arab and Muslim empires built through conquest, observe how Israel is smaller than New Jersey, and still shout “coloniser.” You can see Muslims serving in Israel’s parliament, courts, hospitals, and universities and still call it apartheid, while knowing a Jew entering Palestinian territory risks lynching. You can look at well-fed Gazans and skeletal Israeli hostages and conclude Israel is starving Palestinians. You can accuse Israel of “trapping” Gazans while forgetting Gaza borders Egypt. You can notice Arab states loudly “support” Palestinians while quietly refusing to take in even one. You can blame Zionists for wars, pandemics, inflation, and weather without detecting even a hint of historical irony. You can consume nonstop anti-Israel coverage and still claim Jews control the
media. You can blame Netanyahu for everything bad because “he’s the leader” and deny him credit for anything good for the exact same reason. You can call yourself a human-rights activist while defending Iran, China, Russia, and Venezuela as they brutalise women and minorities. You can call Israel the aggressor even though it never started a war and is now fighting on seven fronts. You can call Qatar a “friend of the West” despite its values opposing Western civilisation on literally every axis. You can cry “genocide” after October 7th while offering no alternative for how Israel should have responded. You can admit Israel warns civilians, aborts strikes and goes to unprecedented lengths to avoid casualties and still shout genocide. You can quote casualty numbers from Hamas while pretending to care about
journalistic integrity. Bottom line: You can have two eyes and a functioning brain and still lose the ability to distinguish good from evil, but only when Jews are involved. I think you have an open-mind Rowan – so open, your brains fell out.
