Israel to expand Gaza assault BY DAVID SAFFER
Tens of thousands of IDF reservists are being mobilised to expand Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The prime objectives of Operation ‘Gideon’s Chariots’ are to capture and control large areas of the Strip to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining 59 hostages held in captivity. Israel’s security cabinet unanimously backed the proposal last Sunday but the operation will not begin until after US President Donald Trump’ trip to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and
Qatar next week. It is anticipated the operation will last a number of months. Trump has hinted he will make a “very big announcement” before flying to the region. “It will be one of the most important announcements that have been made in many years about a certain subject,” he told reporters earlier this week. Most of the Strip’s population will move to the south of Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it clear the operation is not a short term policy. “One thing will be clear, there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory, we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention
is the opposite.” “There will be a movement of the population to protect them,” he added. António Guterres, United Nations secretary general, critcised the operation. “This will inevitably lead to countless more civilians killed and the further destruction of Gaza,” he said. “Gaza is, and must remain, an integral part of a future Palestinian state.” A British Foreign Office spokesperson commented: “The UK does not support an expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Continued fighting is in nobody’s interests.” According to reports Israelis are split whether the campaign will achieve its targets. There is also anger amongst families of hostages concerned about loved ones. According to Bicom, Rafah will become a distribution centre with no Hamas presence. Gazan families would collect supplies. This will stop Hamas stealing aid. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich claimed on Tuesday that Hamas will be finished in six months. Speaking at the Settlement Conference in Ofra, Smotrich, he reportedly told delegates: “There will be no Hamas in Gaza, period. Not as a functioning entity, not militarily, not civilian, not governing. Additionally, the entire population will be concentrated in a completely sterile area
without Hamas, where humanitarian aid will be provided.” Smotrich said it would take time to demilitarise Gaza although there would be “isolated terrorists” who would eventually surrender. “Our hostages, G-d willing, will have returned, I hope very soon, with Hamas’ surrender,” he added. Smothrich continued: “I think within a few months, we can definitively declare victory. We will be able to say Hamas no longer functions as an entity, and there is no longer a threat from Gaza to the citizens of the State of Israel.” It has also been reported that IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir wants to increase draft notices for Charedi men due to the expanded ground operation in Gaza but politically it is a contentious issue. A senior United Torah Judaism reportedly said that the draft orders were symbolic. According to figures last month of 10,000 draft notices sent to Charedis around 900 had begun the screening process. Orthodox leaders have warned of issues with the coalition if necessary.

Israel and Germany to exchange state visits BY ADAM MOSES
President Isaac Herzog departs on a one-day State visit to Germany on Sunday. During the Berlin trip, at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, he will hold diplomatic meetings with Steinmeier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, senior government officials and attend a state event at the Presidential Palace. Steinmeier will accompany Herzog to the Track 17 memorial site at the Grunewald train station where Berlin Jews were sent to concentration camps during the Holocaust. Both will hold a joint meeting with Israeli and German youths for a discussion on the past and future. The visit deepens a strategic alliance between Israel and Germany. The leaders will discuss efforts to release hostages in Gaza, bilateral cooperation and developing joint future initiatives. Following the visit to Germany, Steinmeier is expected to return to Israel with Herzog for a state visit that will include Kibbutz Be’eri, Steinmeier’ second since the 10/7 terror attack. JNF UK Launches Appeal to Restore Forests Damaged by Wildfires in Israel
JNF UK has launched an appeal to support the restoration of forests across central Israel following last week’s devastating wildfires, which caused widespread environmental damage across more than 20 square kilometres of land. The fires, among the worst in Israel’s history, severely affected an estimated 12 square kilometres of forest, including areas nurtured for decades through JNF’s
worldwide afforestation efforts. Among the areas most impacted: Canada Park, where 60% of the forest area has been destroyed Sections of the Anava Forest, Martyrs’ Forest, Shoresh Forest, and the Eshtaol Forest, planted in the 1950s by British Jews in honour of Israel’s first president, Dr. Chaim Weizmann Nearly 3 square kilometres of the Kfira Nature Reserve, a vital natural habitat in the Jerusalem Corridor “These forests are more than green spaces—they are living legacies,” said Elan Gorji, CEO of JNF UK. “They reflect decades of care, investment, and connection between the Jewish diaspora and the land of Israel. Their loss is deeply
felt, but we are committed to ensuring their renewal.” JNF UK is working closely with its longstanding partners KKL-JNF in Israel, who bring generations of expertise in forestry, land care, and ecological restoration. IDF cause $500m damage to Yemen airport

President Donald Trump announced a cessation to the US’ bombing campaign against the Houthis in Yemen hours after the IDF struck a devastating strike to Sanaa International Airport. According to reports from Yemeni authorities the airstrikes caused $500 million of damage. Yemen’s national airline reportedly lost three aircraft leaving one in Oman still in service. No timeframe has been given until the airport is fully operational. The IAF missile attack, and on Yemen’s Hodeidah port on Monday, followed a missile attack by the Iran-backed rebels on Ben Gurion Airport last Sunday. Stocks in El Al and Israir rose sharply with airlines around the world suspending flights. According to reports Israel was unaware of Trump’s impending statement. “They said please don’t bomb us anymore and we’re not going to attack your ships,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “I will accept their word, we are going to stop the bombing of the Houthis effective immediately.” Trump, who visits the region next week, added that the Houthis had “capitulated”. “Before going to Saudi Arabia, UAE & Qatar on Monday night, we will have a very big announcement to make. It is really really positive… It will be one of the most important announcement that have been made in many years about a certain subject.” Under the agreement, brokered by Oman, the Houthis will not target US vessels in the Red Sea.

American carriers United and Delta, British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss Air, Wizz Air, Italy’s ITA Airways, Japan’s Nippon Airways and Spain’s Air Europa cancelled flights. Israeli carriers remained unaffected. Thousands of passengers travelling to Israel had to find alternatives with only El Al and Israir available. El Al’s share price rose on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange rose by 10 per cent, Israir saw a 7% increase.

Chabad reaches new areas post-10/7

Chabad leaders serving 40 countries from three continents attended a two-day international Shluchim conference in Budva, Montenegro to address Jewish life in a post-October 7 world. One hundred Shluchim attended from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Central to discussions was embracing the influx of 80,000 Israelis relocating since the war. “The Shluchim are the Jewish people’s global support system and first-response network,” said Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, conference director, charged with driving Chabad’s global growth and expansion. “When Israelis arrive in Accra, Reykjavik or Dubai, the local Shliach is often the only familiar address they know. This Kinus sharpened our strategy to fulfill the Rebbe’s vision that every Jew should have a home wherever they may be.” Shluchim spoke of a renaissance of Jewish life, especially amongst families, teens and young professionals. CKids, CTeen and CYP chapters are starting across the region, including countries that kept a low profile. Bratislava, Copenhagen and others are welcoming second-generation Shluchim determined to build next generation Jewish communities. This was the first conference since
the passing of Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, entrusted by the Rebbe to expand global Shlichus and regional summits. Last year’s event in Krakow was his final project. This year was dedicated to his memory. Shluchim shared reflections how Rabbi Kotlarsky invested time in their communities, guided growth and made Shlichus possible. Rabbi Baruch Myers from Bratislava completed a Siyum HaShas in memory of his mother. Rabbi Mendy Chitrik, alongside the Alliance of Rabbis in Muslim Countries, presented a new Sefer Torah dedicated in memory of Rabbi Kotlarsky. The scroll will serve Jewish communities in Muslim countries that don’t have permanent Torahs. “This is a living testament to Rabbi
Kotlarsky’s legacy and dedication to the Rebbe’s vision of building where others hadn’t dared,” said a Chabad spokesman. Hosted by Montegro Shluchim, Rabbi Ari and Chani Edelkopf, and Rabbi Leizer and Mushky Ehrenfeld, the regional event
began with the landmark opening of Montenegro’s first mikvah and a moving Yom HaZikaron memorial in Budva’s medieval citadel. “For two days, our quiet streets became an incubator for Jewish continuity,” Rabbi Edelkopf said. “We were honoured that Rabbi Kotlarsky and the organising
Shluchim chose Montenegro to recharge and plot the next wave of growth.” The memorial and summit were coordinated by Rabbi Shneur Najar, the Merkos 302 Office and Vaad HaShluchim. A ‘Tshuva Brov Yo’etz’ think tank session led by Rabbi Kotlarsky allowed Shluchim to share challenges and brainstorm solutions. Shluchim held late-night farbrengens, engaged in strategising sessions, shared resources, mapped regional collaboration and reaffirmed a shared mission. In many of these countries, new Chabad Houses and mikvaot are under construction or recently completed. The scale of growth reflected a movement expanding global Jewish life.

Antisemitism surges outside Israel BY HARRY SIMONS
The J7 Large Communities’ Task Force Against Antisemitism has released its inaugural J7 Annual Report on Antisemitism. As the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War the document illustrates how antisemitic incidents have surged outside of Israel. The report highlights dramatic rises in Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany the United Kingdom and United States driven in part by the aftermath of the October 7 terror attack. “I’m struck by both history’s weight and our communities’ resilience,” said Marina Rosenberg, ADL Senior Vice President of International Affairs. “Antisemitism has risen to unprecedented levels in societies where the majority of Jews live in the diaspora.” The J7 Task Force is calling on all countries to implement the Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism. “These guidelines will help to support governments, institutions and civil society partners in developing practical policies to ensure the safety, inclusion, and dignity of Jewish communities worldwide,” she said. From 2021 to 2023, antisemitic
incidents spiked by 11% in Australia, 23% in Argentina, 75% in Germany, 82% in the UK, 83% in Canada, 185% in France, and 227% in the US. Common trends across J7 countries are a rise in violent antisemitic incidents, repeated targeting of Jewish institutions including synagogues, schools, and community centers, an escalation of online hate, growing insecurity leading some Jews to hide their identity, and government failure to hold accountable those who engage in antisemitic violence or support terrorism against the Jewish state. Board of Deputies President Phil Rosenberg said: “We must insist on zero tolerance of antisemitism and ensure that this message gets through to lawmakers wherever we live.” DAIA President Mauro Berenstein noted: “In Argentina, we see with concern the exponential rise of antisemitism, in educational, academic and professional settings, where many people, under the guise of critical thinking or a just cause, reproduce age-old prejudices. Social media has amplified these narratives. What was once whispered now goes viral
in seconds. Memory and education are not just tools of the past, they are a duty of the present and a hope for the future.” Alex Ryvchin, Co-CEO, Executive Council of Australian Jewry added: “The situation in Australia presents a particularly staggering depiction of how healthy multicultural societies can be captured by networks of extremists who succeed in fundamentally altering relations between Jews and non-Jews and causing the Jewish community to question its future in a country where its roots are deep and its contributions have been profound. The Australian experience also illustrates that when antisemitism is not met with sufficient force of policing, law and political leadership, it can escalate into devastating violence and can attract the most vicious elements of society ranging from religious and ideological fanatics to organised crime.” Noah Shack, Interim President, CIJA commented: “The challenges facing Canada’s Jewish community are immense. In the wake of last week’s federal election, we have a clear expectation that the next

Parliament will move urgently to advance serious and impactful solutions to combat hate and protect Jewish Canadians. What is at stake is not only the safety and well-being of our community, but the future of a Canada where everyone can live free from fear and discrimination.” Dr. Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany: “A front has formed, cutting across the left and right, from Islamists to the very center of society. This coalition questions the self-evidence of today’s Jewish life as well as Germany’s culture of remembrance. These developments are overlapping and mutually influencing online and offline. We are seeing similar developments in all the J7 countries and I am glad that this strong task force exists.” Betsy Berns-Korn, Chair-Elect of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations observed: “Jewish leaders from across the world have come together to reaffirm a simple truth that we will never allow hatred to define our future. Rooted in memory, guided by justice, and strengthened by unity, we reaffirm our commitment to securing a safer and more inclusive world for generations to come.” The J7 Task Force was formed in response to increasing rates of antisemitism around the world.

FJL Launches Record-Breaking Summer Programme and Announces Inaugural Matchfunding Campaign The Forum for Jewish Leadership (FJL), part of the Jewish Futures family of organisations, has officially launched its most ambitious summer to date, with a record number of participants taking part in high-impact internship and volunteer programmes across Israel and the United States. This summer’s initiatives include one elite internship trip to New York for British students, three internship tracks in Israel for participants from the UK, Australia, Canada, the U.S., and beyond, and two alumni volunteer trips in Israel involving over 150 returning participants. Together, these programmes reflect a 50% rise in participation compared to last year - a strong sign of growing interest in Jewish leadership, activism, and identity-building among young adults. “Our mission has always been to cultivate passionate Jewish leaders,” says, Ben Thwaites, Director at FJL. “This summer, we’re doing it on a scale we’ve never achieved before.” The New York internship programme offers British university students the chance to gain professional experience while grappling with Jewish life in the diaspora. Interns are placed in a variety of sectors - from legal firms to think tanks - and take part in immersive leadership sessions, including a highlight meeting with Jonny Harounoff, Israel’s International spokesperson at the United Nations and former FJL Alumni. Meanwhile, three parallel internship programmes in Israel are now underway, drawing students from
across the globe. Participants are placed in prominent Israeli companies and NGOs while engaging in deep Jewish learning, cultural exploration, and policy discussions. Each group will have a private audience with a Member of Knesset, bringing them face to face with Israel’s political and social challenges. The launch of the two alumni volunteer trips in Israel this summer will see participants engaging in solidarity missions, supporting displaced communities,
and contributing to educational and social welfare projects in regions heavily impacted by the war. These trips aim to deepen participants’ connection to Israel and empower them to lead with empathy and purpose. “Leadership isn’t built in classrooms alone - it’s built through real encounters, real service, and real responsibility,” said FJL Founder Rabbi Naftali Schiff. “We’re proud to be shaping leaders who are rooted in Jewish values and ready to face

What truly sustains the Jewish people isn’t charisma or influence - but devotion rooted in responsibility. In every generation, the Jewish people have been sustained not only by laws and customs, but by individuals who rose to lead with conviction, courage, and selflessness. At the heart of true Jewish leadership lies a defining trait: mesirut nefesh, often translated as giving over of the soul for a higher purpose. But this isn’t merely the willingness to endure hardship, it’s a deep, unwavering commitment to serve others and fulfil a mission, even at personal cost. Jewish history is full of leaders who were not defined by power or popularity, but by their ability to place the needs of the people and the Torah above their own. Mesirut nefesh means forgoing comfort, safety, or recognition to uphold a higher calling. It is this quality that has allowed Jewish leadership to endure through exile, oppression, and renewal. Consider Moshe Rabbeinu, the
ultimate Jewish leader. When the people sinned with the Golden Calf, Moshe didn’t distance himself from their failure. Instead, he stood in their defense, declaring, “Erase me from Your book that You have written” (Shemot 32:32). He was willing to give up his own spiritual legacy for the sake of his people. That is mesirut nefesh: leadership rooted not in ego, but in responsibility. This spirit echoes throughout Jewish history. Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn defied the Soviet regime, continuing to lead and teach Torah at great personal risk, including arrest, torture, and exile. Sarah Schenirer, the pioneer of girls’ Jewish education, faced cultural resistance and personal hardship to establish the Bais Yaakov movement. Countless modern educators, rabbis, and communal leaders carry this legacy quietly—spending late nights, making unseen sacrifices, and carrying emotional burdens for their communities. Their names may not be widely known, but their leadership is real.
Why is mesirut nefesh so central to Jewish leadership? Because leadership in Judaism is not about prestige, it’s about service. The Hebrew term for leader, manhig, shares a root with hanhagah, meaning guidance or conduct. A Jewish leader isn’t just a strategist or figurehead. They are a guide, whose authority comes not from status, but from values. In a society that often glorifies influence, platform, and image, Judaism offers a radical alternative: greatness through humility, impact through sacrifice. Mesirut nefesh grounds leadership in moral and spiritual courage. It reframes the leader’s question from “How can I be heard?” to “What am I needed for?” This value is especially urgent in our generation. We face challenges that are physical, spiritual, and emotional. From rising antisemitism and assimilation to the stresses of a hyper-connected, fractured world. What will sustain Jewish continuity is not charisma or marketing, but mesirut nefesh. We need leaders,

parents, teachers, rabbis, and students who carry the Jewish people not because it’s easy or popular, but because it is right. Jewish leadership doesn’t require perfection. It requires presence, perseverance, and the willingness to place Torah and community above one’s own comfort. That’s the model Moshe taught us. That’s the model our leaders, past and present, have lived by. And that’s the model we must continue to uphold. In the end, mesirut nefesh is not just a trait of leadership, it is the heartbeat of Jewish destiny. It is the sacred act of saying: I am here not for myself, but for something greater. CER Launches First Benefits Card Israel Guide Dog Centre Opens New The Conference of European Rabbis (CER) has launched a unique Benefits Card offering community rabbis across the continent access to exclusive discounts, resources, and services designed to support their vital work. The CER Benefits Card includes preferential rates on kosher food, religious texts, Judaica, hotel accommodation, and access to world-class Torah databases such as Otzar HaHochma and the Bar-Ilan Responsa Project. It also provides discounted access to CER conferences, training programmes, and events. The card, available to officially recognised CER rabbis, is part of a wider initiative to ease the dayto-day burdens of rabbinic life and empower Jewish spiritual leadership throughout Europe. Saul’s Walking Home My name is Saul Muzlish and I’m doing something mad. From May 21st, I will begin my 100 mile walk home along the Grand Union Canal from Birmingham to London. That’ll be 20 miles a day over 5 days. As much as I really do enjoy walking, I’m not pushing my body to the limit just for fun. I will be doing this to support a cause that I believe is at the forefront of medical, practical and emotional support for people like me, and is responsible for the existence of over 600 Jewish children in London alone. I will be walking for the fertility charity Bonei Olam. When my wife Shoshi and I realised that our journey to parenthood wouldn’t be a simple one, we didn’t know where to turn. Everywhere we looked, there were brick walls: endless waiting lists, astronomical costs, contradictory medical advice. After one of the hardest weeks of our fertility journey, we filled in Bonei Olam’s online form, not sure exactly what we were getting ourselves into or whether it was worth getting our hopes up, but
knowing that we couldn’t go on like this. They took just hours to get back to us, and that evening, we were in their office meeting our new caseworker. She looked us in the eyes and said the words that changed our lives: WE NEVER GIVE UP ON ANYONE. Flash forward two and a half years, Bonei Olam has seen us through numerous medicated cycles, investigations, surgery, more investigations and now, IVF. We were devastated when, just a few months ago, our first pregnancy ended in miscarriage, but we’re not ready to give up yet – and neither is Bonei Olam. As difficult as a fertility journey is, Shoshi and I have always promised each other that we would make use of the time before becoming parents, treating it as a blessing when we can. We’re proud of our 2023 documentary, The Highs and Lows of a Kosher Marriage, where we spoke up about our struggles and about how our faith and community support us. State of the Art Veterinary Clinic
Last week the Israel Guide Dog Centre proudly opened its new, state of the art Veterinary Clinic. The entrance hall was dedicated in memory of the late UK Executive Director, Martin Segal z”l. As a guide dog charity, the welfare of the dogs throughout their lives is central to the Centre’s mission. Over the decades, the Centre has overseen the health and wellbeing of more than 2,000 puppies and dogs. With ever increasing demand leading to an increase in the number of puppies born at the Centre in recent years, alongside the ongoing care of hundreds of guide and service dogs under its responsibility at any given time, the Veterinary Clinic required expansion, renovation, and modernisation. These improvements have made the clinic more efficient and better equipped to meet both current and future demand. Orna Braun, Co-Founder of the Israel Guide Dog Centre and Head of Breeding, explained that the new clinic had long been a dream. It now includes a laboratory for fertilisation and transcervical insemination, an operating theatre, examination room, breeding area, and five recovery kennels. The expanded facility enables the Centre to carry out vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, minor surgeries, ultrasounds (to monitor
in-utero puppies or assess a dog’s heart and organs), endoscopy, digital X-rays, electrocardiograms, dental work, extractions, and physical rehabilitation following injuries. These services are vital to the Centre’s mission. The health of every dog is monitored from birth through its entire working life, supporting the success of every dog-client partnership. The opening ceremony welcomed a group of UK supporters who came together to honour Martin Segal and to view the new facility. Martin’s widow, Rebecca Segal, spoke movingly at the dedication: “Today is a beautiful reminder of the wonderful work Martin did and how much respect you all had for him. Thank you so much for dedicating the entrance hall to him. This place has grown and changed so much from when I first came here in 2011, and it will always have a special place in my heart.” The new Veterinary Clinic was made possible, in part, by the generosity of UK supporters, who are passionate about the life-changing partnerships created at the Israel Guide Dog Centre—whether it be guide dogs for those who are blind or visually impaired, or service and emotional support dogs for people living with PTSD and other challenges.

NJA Issues Urgent Call to Action Amid Rising Antisemitism and Terror Threats in the UK
The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) is convening a landmark event this May to confront the growing legal, institutional, and security failures that are leaving British Jews increasingly vulnerable. In the wake of the recent arrest of an Iranian terror cell allegedly plotting an imminent attack on a UK Jewish site, the NJA warns that the threats facing the Jewish community are no longer theoretical — they are immediate, multi-layered, and dangerously under-addressed. The Real Commission on the Legal System and Antisemitism in the UK On Sunday, May 11th, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 7:30 PM in London NW3, the NJA will host a groundbreaking in-person event titled “The Real Commission on the Legal System and Antisemitism in the UK.” This unique briefing will bring together legal experts, policy professionals, and community advocates to investigate four critical areas where British Jews are being failed: • Policing and public order • The education system • Public institutions and the media • The rising trend of collective blame The event will expose how a two-tier policing approach has enabled pro-Palestinian demonstrations to cross the line into antisemitic hate marches; how
schools and universities are becoming unsafe spaces for Jewish students; how broadcasters like the BBC allow antisemitic narratives to go unchallenged; and how more and more Jews are being vilified simply for their identity or perceived connection to Israel. “This is not just another panel discussion — it is a wake-up call,” said Steve Winston, Managing Director of the NJA. “British Jews are being targeted in schools, in the media, and on our streets. If we don’t act now, the erosion of our safety and freedom will accelerate.” A Chilling Reminder: Terror on Our Doorstep The urgency of the NJA’s initiative has only intensified following the arrest of eight terror suspects — seven of them Iranian nationals — in what authorities have described as one of the most significant counter-terrorism operations in years. At least one cell was reportedly planning an attack on a Jewish community site, possibly a synagogue, with the attack allegedly thwarted

A CONFUSED COMMUNITY Dear Editor As the World Zionist Congress elections approach, many in the UK Jewish community are asking themselves who to vote for—especially those of us who were never part of the youth movement ecosystem that usually dominates this space. What stands out this time is just how
just hours before execution. While the NJA commends security services for their swift response, the organisation warns that the plot underscores a broader threat: the active presence of Iranian-linked extremism in the UK. “It is utterly unacceptable that Jewish communities in Britain are being forced to live under the shadow of foreign-backed terror,” said NJA Chairman Gary Mond. “Iran is not just a geopolitical threat abroad — it is an active menace here at home.” Demanding Government Action In response, the NJA is reiterating its call for the UK Government to immediately designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. Despite repeated promises by the ruling party while in opposition, no such action has yet been taken. “We cannot allow bureaucratic hesitation or diplomatic cowardice to prevent necessary action,” Mond stated. “If this weekend’s events don’t justify proscribing
the IRGC, what on earth would?” The NJA is also urging the Home Office and intelligence services to increase protective measures for Jewish communities and institutions. “The Jewish community is tired of living with warnings and near misses,” Mond added. “Symbolic condemnations are no longer enough. The organizers of the Nova Music Festival, where over 360 people were killed by Hamas, have also spoken out, describing Kneecap’s message as “deeply hurtful” to their community and inviting the band to visit an exhibition dedicated to the victims and survivors. This kind of robust reaction is precisely what should have been mirrored in the UK, for example, in response to the pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel marches that have taken place, as promised by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and the police, but which has yet to materialize. It is also deeply concerning that the European Broadcasting Union has, regrettably, revised its flag policy ahead of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, now permitting Palestinian flags to be waved by audience members – a decision that risks further inflaming tensions. Long may this backlash against Kneecap and such anti-Israel propaganda continue. It should serve as a severe warning and deterrent to artists and others considering or expressing similar hateful rhetoric in the future.

AAD strongly applauds the swift and decisive responses to this unacceptable behavior. This has included the cancellation of Kneecap gigs at the Eden Project in Cornwall, Plymouth, and three concerts in Germany. The World Zionist Organization The WZO is an extremely powerful entity that represents the global Jewish community’s stance on critical issues. They have considerable influence and a robust budget to enact policies that promote Zionism. The WZO oversees and influences various entities, including the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and Keren Kayemet L’Yisroel (KKL).

Every five years, the WZO holds an open election to select members who will represent World Jewry. These members hold the key to creating policies that affect every aspect of Israeli society. Until now, the WZO has been represented by those who are at odds with our Torah values and implemented policies that disregard the sanctity of our land. Orthodox Jewry has not been adequately represented within these influential circles.

Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef served as the Rishon LeZion from 2013—2023, after which he became president of the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah. R’ Yosef toils to strengthen authentic Torah values and traditions, especially among the youth.

Until the Ends of the Earth? BY RABBI GIDEON GOLDWATER
“No Jew will be left behind.” Moshe Rabbeinu said it to Pharaoh and it’s echoed throughout our history ever since. At times, those words have carried hope and reassurance. At other times, a haunting warning. But in today’s world, they take on a different kind of urgency, especially when we think about young Jews heading off to university. Because that’s often when we start losing them. These are young people in whom we’ve invested so much. From childhood onwards, thousands of pounds and countless hours go into their Jewish identity: through schools, youth groups, shuls, camps, family celebrations, communal infrastructure, and even physical security. We build a beautiful, thriving Jewish ecosystem around them. And then, it stops. They leave for campus. And with them, much of the investment, the structure, and the support stops. There are some who feel the vacuum, and they step into
the world of Jewish leadership through student politics and society committees. But so many don’t. What happens to them? This isn’t just a philosophical concern it’s an educational crisis. When I studied for my Masters in Jewish Education, I spent months exploring different models of campus outreach. Again and again, I came to the same conclusion: casual cultural engagement isn’t enough. Bagels and “bants” don’t build identity. They don’t answer the deep questions that young Jews are asking. But high-quality, values-driven Jewish education does. If we want our young people to stay connected, to care, to grow, to live proudly as Jews - they need more than social events. They need to understand why it matters. They need to feel deeply the reason to fight for that connection. And the timing couldn’t be more critical. These years, just as they leave home, are some of the most formative of their lives. Intellectually, emotionally, spiritually. It is a time for questioning. University is often the peak of their secular education, the moment they’re
thinking deeply about life, purpose, and future. And just then, just as their minds and hearts are wide open, our communal investment in their Jewish journey hits a lifetime low. It makes no sense. That was the realisation that lit a fire in me. I started to ask who is aware of this challenge? Who is trying to address it? And I found Aish UK. What I saw was an organisation laser-focused on exactly this challenge: being there for Jewish students, where and when they need it most. With a presence on major campuses. With engaging, relevant, thought-provoking Jewish learning that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the academic excellence they’re surrounded by. With warm, inspiring, non-judgemental, relevant educators who live and breathe this mission. People who care deeply. Who show up. Who listen. Who teach. Nine years ago, I signed up to be part of that mission, moving with my family to Birmingham. Eventually we moved to London to oversee other campuses also, and now am the Managing Director of Aish UK, ensuring that this mission
stays on track and that Aish can be there to educate and inspire as many Jewish journeys as possible. It’s not always easy. There are still too many young Jews falling through the cracks. But there was an anecdote that reminded me of what needs to be done, that occured shortly after we moved to Birmingham. A close friend asked me: “To what lengths do we need to go to reach them all - really Birmingham?” I don’t know the full answer. I’m not sure anyone does. But I do know this: we need to do more. Because every Jew matters. And no Jew should ever be left behind. Rabbi Goldwater holds a BSc in Psychology and an MA in Jewish Education and spent two years living in Birmingham as the Aish Rabbi on Campus. He went on to direct Aish’s national Campus programme before taking on his current roles as Managing Director of both Aish UK and Jewish Futures. He has overseen the expansion of the teams and programming that are currently impacting over 20,000 young Jews across the UK.

Welcome to the club—membership includes King David and probably your local rabbi. The secret is to keep showing up. Consistency builds inner fire. Think of it like exercise: you don’t skip the gym just because you’re not in the mood—you go so your muscles stay strong. Your soul is the same. Add a little spice: whisper something personal to G-d in addition to the regular prayers and take time to study one line of prayer commentary each day. Don’t panic if you feel nothing; you’re not broken, you’re human. Inspiration comes and goes—but faithfulness? That’s the stuff of greatness. And remember, even when you’re not feeling it, G-d is still listening. He never gets bored of your voice—even when you do. As for mundane pleasures, Judaism doesn’t believe in sitting on mountaintops eating stale crackers and waiting for enlightenment. We don’t fast every day—we feast, we sing, we dance, and yes, we eat cheesecake on Shavuot. Hashem made this world with flavours,

colours, beauty, and comfort for a reason. The Talmud says a person will be held accountable for pleasures they could have enjoyed but didn’t. The key is balance. Eat the cake—just don’t become the cake. Buy the car—just don’t worship it. Enjoy the vacation—just bring a siddur with you. Spirituality doesn’t mean rejecting pleasure; it means using it to deepen gratitude, presence, and kindness. So go ahead—enjoy a good cup of coffee or a sunset stroll. Just say a blessing and remember Who brewed the beans. Holiness isn’t above the world—it’s in it.

Maimonides teaches that anger corrodes the soul. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you condone what happened or that you’re ready to invite them
to your Pesach Seder. It just means you’re not letting their behaviour hijack your peace. Think of it as emotional eviction— why let their nonsense live rent-free in your head? Free up that emotional real estate for better tenants— like friends who care about you; family who love you; and all those things that give you peace of mind. There are fires that destroy. And there are fires that galvanise. The difference lies not in the flame but in the manner and in the person who wields it. This past week, parts of Israel were dangerously engulfed in fire, not caused by spontaneous combustion nor rockets, but from wanton acts of evil. They were wildfires of arson. They were fires of hatred, deliberately lit to spread terror and devastation. In recent weeks, we have seen other kinds of flames too—emotionally charged infernos of anger, division, and rage sweeping across society. Throughout Jewish history, such fires are tragically nothing new. The two Temples were destroyed by fire, literal and metaphorical. The Second Temple, in particular, was lost not to external enemies alone but to the internal fire of sinat chinam, baseless hatred, burning from within. We are told that it is the power of the negative force of machloket that is the principal cause of our enduring exile. Fire, in Jewish thought, has always had this dual potential: it can consume or it can forge. It can devour or it can bind. It can reduce to ashes or it can fuel growth. That tension lies at the heart of the human condition. Free will means every flame we touch, be it a spark of emotion, a flicker of ambition, or the blaze of ideology all can be channeled for good or ill. The challenge of life is to take the energy of these fires within and direct, focus, and fan them with purpose. Our greatest leader, Moshe Rabbeinu, first encountered G-d in a flame, a bush ablaze, yet not consumed. A fire that burned without destruction. A fire that attracted, intrigued, and called forth a destiny forged with passion.
And at Sinai, when the entire nation stood together, “like one person with one heart,” the Torah was given amidst fire. The fire at Sinai wasn’t one of destruction or of chaos. It was a fire of unity and of revelation- a torch of generational transmission that will be passed on forever. Fire can burn. But fire can also bind, just as it does in a crucible, fusing disparate elements, smelting together unlike materials to create something new, unified, stronger. The Jewish People were forged in fire: the furnace of Egypt, the ashes of Auschwitz, even the trauma of October 7th. Yet from each blaze we have
arrogance of believing only my fire is the one that represents truth. But we must be careful. As the saying goes, “Don’t play with fire!” Apart from the dangers of unbridled physical passions, Pirkei Avot additionally warns us: “Be careful with the words of the sages, for they are like burning embers.” Even the fire of religiosity can wreak havoc if mishandled. Likewise, “burning rage” , sometimes romanticised as righteous indignation, is rarely constructive. Jewish tradition urges us to channel fire, not be overcome by it. That’s why, on Motzei Shabbat, the first
emerged not only scarred, but strengthened. Hardened, but not embittered. Uplifted, but not burned out. That is the story of our people. And it’s the story we must now choose to live again. As we march towards Shavuot, we’re reminded that Torah cannot be received amidst division. The students of Rabbi Akiva, who famously taught, “Love your neighbour as yourself is the great principle of the Torah,” on some level, tragically failed to live up to his ideals. They were consumed not by indifference, but by machloket, the fire of internal disrespect. Thousands perished, not for lacking Torah knowledge, but for lacking the appropriate kavod for one another. Disagreement is not the problem, in fact, vigorous debate is the lifeblood of Jewish learning. The danger lies in disrespect, in the refusal to listen, in the scorching
act that launches us into the new week of human creativity, is the lighting of fire. Havdalah celebrates the power of humanity to use this elemental force not to destroy but to focus and to build. It marks the shift from sacred rest to passionate responsibility. Next week, we celebrate Lag B’Omer, where fire again takes centre stage, not as a threat, but as a symbol of hidden ethereal light. We build bonfires to mark the yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, who brought the inner teachings of Kabbalah to the world. The fire of Lag B’Omer is the fire of mysticism—a spiritual flame that illuminates the neshama. This fire is not noisy or angry. It is rather- deep, reflective, radiant and spiritual. This is the fire we need now. A fire of passion, not rage. A fire that builds bridges, that illuminates minds, that kindles hearts.

The Real Meaning BY RABBI SHAUL YONATAN TAWIL
A cruel husband once approached his wife and told her “I’m the boss and you’re nothing.” She instantly replied, “Well I guess then... that makes you the boss of nothing!” How much wisdom was captured in those few lines and wasted on a joke. The wife’s response didn’t deny that he was the boss - in fact, she readily agreed with him. She merely explained to him over what he was the boss. In other words, if you treat a wife like she’s nothing, then you are the boss of nothing. Treat her like a person then you are the boss of a person. Treat her like a queen, then you are the boss of a queen – that is a King. Would you like to be a king? Fine – just treat her like a queen! In this weeks Parsha we read one of the most famous statements that has resounded for generations - “VeAhavta LeReacha Kamocha – you should love your neighbour like yourself”. So famous is this statement that R Akiva said this is a Klal Gadol BaTorah – a great rule in the torah. This is a profound mitzvah. We all love ourselves, very very much! The torah seems to command that we take that same love and focus it on all those around us. Yet the Ramban finds this hard to accept. How can it be that you should love your friend equally to yourself? There is a rule in the Gemara: “Chayecha Kodmin.” – Your live always takes precedence. The Gemara Bava Metziah (62a) states that if two people in the desert finding a canteen with enough water in it to keep only one person alive. The one who has it uses it, and is not supposed to give it to his friend. He

must tend to his own life first, thus it seems he must love himself more than others. Thus asks the Ramban how can it be that we’re instructed here to love a friend equally to our love for our self, when we know that the Torah supports a person’s survival instinct and says that ultimately your own life comes first? What is the real meaning of VeAhavta LeReacha KaMocha? The Ramban explains that the Torah is commanding us here to love our friends also, in a similar way (Kamocha) that we love ourselves. The Ramban takes the phrase Kamocha as an overstatement for emphasis. That desire that we have regarding ourselves, to live and be well, should carry over to others. The Ramban supports his view by the fact that Torah doesn’t say “et reacha”, rather “lereacha.” “LeReacha means towards your friend, but not exactly the same. We know that we are not expected to love the person of our neighbour as much as we love our own self. However, we are expected to love our fellow in all areas, as we love all good for ourselves. Similarly the Rambam (Mada 6:3) writes that we should speak in praise of our neighbours, be careful with the honour and the property of others - as we are with our own. VeAhavta LeReacha KaMocha is a very hard mitzvah to complete. It is a constant mitzvah, and requires much self inspection before applying it to others. We meet so many people in our daily lives, and we immediately form views about them. We relate to different people differently, yet we are told with one blanket statement – treat them all with love, put yourselves in their shoes and look out for their interests just as you would for your own. The Chida writes that this Mitsvah is most manifest between a husband and wife. In the outside world, it might be easy for us to show our kindness, after all, everyone is watching, so we need to impress. Yet when it comes to behind doors, that is when we are really being put to the test. When a man comes home from work he should not expect the dinner on the table, he should not view as the woman’s obligation, rather he should see it as kindness, she worked hard for it and spent quality time; put himself in her shoes. Similarly the women should not take for granted the husbands work, she should view it as Chesed. We can now understand why this mitzvah was placed in the Parsha of Kedoshim. What does holiness have to do with loving your neighbour. Of course by doing the mitzvah you bring unity and happiness but does that lead to holiness. The answer is that to acquire holiness two things need to occur. The first is to love your neighbour exemplify in Ben Adam LeChavero and the

second is to do it in a manner of Kedusha. A true Torah-observant home is certainly most conducive to the Divine Presence. However, we should remember that as important as observance of Mitsvot is, it is possible as Ramban says (19:2) for a person to be in technical compliance with every halachic requirement, and nevertheless be a vulgar person. The Midrash (Vayikra Rabba 13:3) states that the Mitsvot were given to us for no reason other than to refine our characters. R Shlomo Zalman Auerbach was accompanied by a student before he entered his home, R Shlomo Zalman paused to brush the dust from his coat. He explained to the student, “The Talmud says that the Shechina dwells amongst man and wife. Do you think it is respectful to be in the presence of the Shechina with a dusty garment?” If we were to approach married life with VeAhavta LeReacha KaMocha constantly on our minds, seeking the best for our partner as well as for ourselves, really understanding what they have been through that day, and infuse our relationship with Kedusha then we will ultimately become One. A Mancunian who was inspired to follow his musical dream by the Lubavitcher Rebbe has died after a long illness. Mike Tabor, 79, visited the Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in 1970 when he was invited by the World Union of Students to perform at its conference in Philadelphia. And, when Rabbi Shmuel Lew — the Chabad emissary in London — heard that Mike would be passing through New York City, he arranged an audience with the Rebbe. The Rebbe told him about the Alter Rebbe — Schneur Zalman, of Liadi, who was the 18th century founder of Chabad — was able to wash away a person’s impurities with music. Born in Hackney, east London, to Min and Jack Tabor, he studied at Gateshead yeshiva and then went to the London School of Economics, where he read law. After that, Mike studied teaching at the University of Sheffield and subsequently taught at Carmel College, the Jewish boarding school for boys in Oxfordshire. But, wanting to send his children to a Jewish school in a major city, the family moved to Manchester in 1981. Mike had married fellow teacher Naomi (nee Schwalbe) in 1973, and they had six children — Shoshi, Gavi, Peretz, Avraham, Mord and Chaim. industry. Peretz said: “He realised it wasn’t for him and began to get more into his music. “He played the violin, bouzouki, and wind instruments, and was a storyteller as well as a singer. “He performed in all types of settings from weddings and Limmud to overseas Jewish events and intimate concerts.” Mike, who released his debut album, Jewish Soul, in 2001, and performed a number of times with Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, who is considered widely to be the most influential composer of Jewish religious music of the 20th century. He played alongside him at one of his final concerts before Rabbi Carlebach’s death in 1994. Peretz said: “Dad was an unassuming person who had a huge impact on people. “At shiva, so many different types of people shared how they had impacted him. He was full of joy and loved interacting with people. “Dad felt it was a tremendous honour and responsibility to share Judaism, both with the Jewish and local communities. “Growing up, our home was filled with Jewish and non-Jewish friends.” A member of Beis Hamedrash

Do you get goose pimples when you are scared, or a nervous stomach when you are excited? Isn’t that strange? After all, it’s your mind and heart that feel excitement or fear. Why do your hands and stomach react in this way? G‑d created our bodies to be sensitive and to react to the things which we think and feel. The Torah tells us that there was a time when people were so sensitive, that they could actually see a change on their skin because of something they said. When a person would speak bad things about
other people over and over again, blotches of discolored skin, would appear on his body. The Torah calls this person a metzora. The word metzora is short for three words in Hebrew meaning saying bad things about someone else (“motzi shem ra”). The blotches or leprosy is a type of impurity from which the metzora had to purify himself. If a person discovered it on his body, he had to leave the entire camp of the Jewish people and follow the Torah’s instructions for purifying himself. He separated one Jew from another.

Therefore, the Torah tells him that he must stay away from the rest of the people until he becomes purified. If the metzora has to stay alone, away from everyone else, who is going to help him become pure? The Kohen - priest - comes to purify him. The priests are kind and loving for their fellows. Listen carefully to the Priestly Blessing on holidays in the synagogue. They say: “Blessed are you G‑d... Who has commanded us to bless His nation, Israel, with love.” The metzora did not show love for his fellow when he spoke badly of others. He needs to be shown
the right way to act — and the priests, with their strong love for their fellows, can do this job best. Because he cares for another Jew, even a metzora, the Kohen goes out from the holy Temple, the holiest place in the world. He walks to the outskirts of the city, to the place where the metzora is staying, to help him become pure and come back to his community with more love for his fellow than he had before.

One Friday evening recently, I said the first paragraph of shema five times, and each time it was for a different reason. How did this occur? We accepted Shabbat early, praying the evening service before three stars appeared in the sky. We read all three paragraphs of shema as a preface to the silent prayer. Even though one does not fulfill the obligation of saying the evening shema before the stars appear, it is customary to read shema with its blessings in order to say the “redemption” blessing immediately before the silent prayer (somech geula l’tefilla) and to pray amidst words of Torah study.
When the three stars came out, we repeated all three paragraphs of shema, this time in order to fulfill the mitzvah to recite the evening shema in its proper time, night time. When I put my son to sleep, I said the first paragraph of shema with him. This time I was fulfilling the obligation of teaching Torah to my son, as it says in the shema itself, “you shall teach them to your children.” That week’s Parsha was Parshat Vaetchanan. As part of the custom of completing the Parsha before reading it in shul, I read the entire Parsha, which includes the first paragraph of shema. Before going to sleep, I said the first paragraph of shema a fifth time during the bedtime - kriat shema al ha’mita - as protection for my soul during sleep.
