Nick Goepper is a young man seeking balance. As a member of the U.S. freeskiing team vying this week at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea (which airs on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app), the 23-year-old native of Lawrenceburg, Ind., is ever cognizant of the need to stay in top condition and competition-ready, but also knows that there is such a thing as overdoing it. As he has done before. “I skied every single month of the year last year,” he says, “and I got to a point where I think I was beating myself up. I was tired, my body was worn out, I was worn out mentally. But I think you have to make a mature decision to purposely take time off. Even though you might feel great and really want to go skiing, but having the time off, it kind of gives you a mental edge, because you’re just fired up to go back skiing when you do. And it also gives your body a nice rest.” This week, however, he’ll be coming off arguably the second-biggest event of his season – the Jan. 25-28 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo. – when he competes in slopestyle in South Korea. Having won the bronze medal in that event four years ago in Sochi, Russia, he feels confident in his ability to move up on the podium and take gold. But he knows there will be literal and figurative mountains to climb. He’ll be competing against the best of the best, vying with an accomplished field that includes U.S. teammate Gus Kenworthy (the silver medalist in Sochi in 2014), Norway’s Oystein Braaten (the X Games gold medalist in 2017), Sweden’s Henrik Harlaut (silver medal at the 2013 X Games) and newcomer Andri Ragettli of Switzerland. “I like to set expectations for myself but not unrealistic ones,” Goepper says, “and I think that’s

something that I’ve learned over the years, is to be realistic with expectations that you place on yourself. I think it is important to do, because that’s how you push yourself and strive to compete and reach your goals. But I think it’s important to not shoot too high because then you risk feeling like a failure all the time, personally. So I think it’s important to set expectations, but realistic ones.” The well-spoken, well-grounded Goepper is also careful to not get caught up in the celebrity that comes with being an Olympic athlete. After winning bronze four years ago, he took to Twitter to court country artist Taylor Swift on Valentine’s Day and was even photographed with her at the Golden Globe Awards that year, but nothing came of it. This year, his focus is trained firmly on skiing, as that is his first love and it’s what has gotten him to this point in his life. “It’s something that I’ve loved since I was 10 years old and it has brought a lot of cool, positive things to my life,” he says. “I love to challenge myself and work hard, and skiing is something that I really enjoy doing that in. And it also is very rewarding, too, when you do push yourself and work hard, and skiing gives me an outlet to do that. And also I’ve got so many great friends that do this, and just to experience doing flips on massive jumps and traveling the world and sharing it with not too many people is just a cool experience.” AGES ANTIQUES

“The biggest game is the game of love.” So says Hannah Storm, and with all the sports she’s covered, it’s hard to argue with her take on “The Bachelor Winter Games.” The ESPN personality joins host Chris Harrison as a commentator for the ABC franchise’s newest iteration, which starts a two-week Tuesday and Thursday run on Feb. 13. Alums of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” compete against – and, of course, possibly find romance with – international singles at Vermont’s Hermitage Club. “I had heard rumblings about it, and I thought it was a great idea,” the friendly Storm says of the show, which also involves sports anchor Ashley Brewer of Los Angeles’ KABC-TV and figure-skating veterans Nancy Kerrigan, Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner. “I love the idea of people competing on the field of play to win someone’s heart, so I thought it was a fun twist on the franchise. That was my first thought: ‘Wow, this sounds like a lot of fun.’ ” Indeed, Storm confirms, “My approach was to just have a good time. It’s not what you would consider serious sports commentary, and these aren’t professional athletes. We were putting them in situations that, for the most part,

they were completely unfamiliar with – so it was a huge challenge for them, and it made for some pretty hilarious moments. And there’s the whole aspect of human nature that’s a really interesting part of ‘The Bachelor,’ so I loved seeing how that played out.” Also the filmmaker behind such projects as the recent Epix documentary “Danica,” Storm notes she strictly was involved in covering the “Bachelor Winter Games” sports elements, not in observing the potential joys and heartbreaks of the players’ courtships. During the taping, she was happy to find a solid colleague in Harrison, who was a sportscaster himself before making his name on a national level as a host of reality and game shows.

A Toronto mother and daughter want to teach you to ‘Cook Like a Jamaican’ Angela Lawrence was just minding her own business, videotaping her mother’s Jamaican recipes and posting them to YouTube for a family project when serendipity struck. Turns out, there are a lot of people on the Internet who want to cook like a Jamaican, and so “Cook Like a Jamaican,” starring Lawrence and her mother Fay DeLeon, was born. The year was 2007, when the Toronto native wanted to learn her Jamaican-born mom’s recipes but didn’t want to be bothered with writing them down, so she picked up a camera and taught herself how to shoot video. A few years later, she decided to edit the videos and post them online for a family legacy project and a YouTube channel for family to watch, when outside users took notice. Viewership and subscriptions went through the roof and two YouTube stars were born. “There was a recipe that like took off – and it’s still definitely in the top three popular recipes,” Lawrence explains, “which is a video for brown stew chicken. And it was that video and the video for fried dumplings, which are both very traditional standards. ... And so what we found was those two really took off, like they just started to get a lot of views. I know that the brown stew chicken now has well over a million views and that was where I was like, ‘Wow!’ And then it just became a fun thing to do.” Eleven years later, “Cook Like a Jamaican,” with its 115 videos (and counting), is approaching 100,000 subscribers with views well into the millions. On the channel, Fay shows viewers how to make such varied and traditional Jamaican staples as pepper shrimp,

Caribbean pineapple chicken, baked plantains, curry tripe and beans, curry beef, macaroni pie (the Jamaican version of macaroni and cheese), fried banana chips and Lawrence’s favorite, ackee (a fruit similar to apple) and saltfish. “It’s Jamaica’s national dish,” she says, “but it’s like one of my favorite things to eat. It’s really quite easy to make if you have all the right ingredients. But yeah, I would say that’s comfort food for me – Jamaican comfort food.” Viewers looking to re-create the recipes they see prepared on the YouTube channel can find them on its sister website, cooklikeajamaican.com.

Kevin Hart and Pharrell Williams are expected to join retired NBA players and members of the WNBA for some light-hearted basketball. The Rising Stars Challenge follows on TNT, which is an exhibition of the NBA’s best first and second-year players. 8 p.m. on WIS 2018 Winter Olympics Mikaela Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine history, winning Olympic gold in the women’s slalom at Sochi in 2014 when she was only 18. Tonight she’ll go up against fellow American Lindsey Vonn for a shot a medaling in the women’s super-G in alpine skiing. Both Vonn and Shiffrin had their troubles with the super-G in Olympic qualifiers. Meanwhile, it’s the finals in men’s figure skating along with action in freestyle skiing and skeleton. 8 p.m. on DISNEY Movie: Zombies William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” has received countless adaptations over the years, but few as unconventional as this 2018 teen musical.
