‘Dollface’ – Dumped woman goes back to single friends BY GEORGE DICKIE Jules has neglected her girlfriends for the last five years and now she is about to pay the price. As portrayed by Kat Dennings (“2 Broke Girls”) in the Hulu comedy series “Dollface,” premiering Friday, Nov. 15, she’s a young woman who has just been dumped by her longtime boyfriend and now must face the world as a singleton and rekindle her relationships with the pals she pushed aside: Madison (Brenda Song, “The Social Network”), Stella (Shay Mitchell, “You”) and Izzy (Esther Povitsky, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”). But her biggest obstacle might be her own imagination. That’s illustrated by a fantasy sequence in the premiere’s opening minutes, when the newly jilted Jules steps on a bus driven by a catwoman and full of sobbing dumpees who presumably need to be reassimilated back into uncoupled society. They arrive at a terminal where a PA announcement instructs them to “reconnect with your girlfriends and proceed to emotional baggage claim.” “I call it the like Calvin and Hobbes thing,” Dennings told a recent gathering of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif., “where when Jules is kind of going through a heightened emotion, the magical realism kind of comes in to guide her, if you want.”

“Sometimes it’s heightened reality and sometimes it’s not, but the heightened reality doesn’t drive the story,” executive producer/ director Stephanie Laing explains. “There’s no rules about how we slip in and out of it. It’s sort of we transition. We like to think it’ll be a surprise.” Her best friend Madison is none too pleased when Jules turns up at her door and immediately picks up that she’s been dumped. She’s also not sure whether Jules is there because she’s just lonely or she indeed wants her friendship. All she knows is she feels left behind. For Song, playing against the TV trope of toxic female codependency was important to her, adding that “Dollface” is “not about female friendships. I think the show is just about friendships in general. Because I think there’s a weird stigma to that, and that’s so untrue. “And I think what’s fun about our show,” she continues, “is that a lot of these issues that we portray on this show, I, myself, have gone through a millionand-twelve times over. It feels very real. There’s so many times where I read these scripts and I’m, like, ‘Oh, I’ve done this.’ Or, ‘Oh, thought of that.’ And that’s what’s been really fun about this is that it feels sort of – I mean, obviously, it’s heightened, but it’s all very organic and real issues that I think people can relate to. November 15 “Movie: Klaus” The friendship between a toymaker and a postman melts an age-old feud in a frozen Arctic town in this animated movie from Spain. J.K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman and Joan Cusack head the voice cast. (ORIGINAL) Premiere “Movie: Earthquake Bird” This atmospheric thriller movie is set in 1989 Tokyo and stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) as an enigmatic woman with a painful past who enters into an intense relationship with a troubled local photographer, and both wind up entangled in the case of a missing girl. November 14 “Movie: Instant Family” Writer, director and producer Sean Anders (“That’s My Boy”) borrowed from his own personal experiences to make this 2018 comedy about a couple that find themselves in over their heads when they foster three children. Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, Isabela Moner and Tig Notaro star.
“Movie: I Lost My Body” From France comes this animated tale of a severed hand that escapes from a dissection lab and scrambles through the streets of Paris to get back to its body. The film was a favorite at Cannes this year, winning the Critics’ Week Grand Prize. Dev Patel, Alia Shawkat and George Wendt are among those in the voice cast. (ORIGINAL) Premiere

“Aladdin” (2019): Following Robin Williams was a tall order, but Smith accomplished it nicely by infusing his own personality into the role of the genie in this live-action version of the Disney fantasy.

‘Gemini Man’ offers Will Smith times two If you like Will Smith, “Gemini Man” certainly gives you its fair share of him, both as he presently appears and as he would look as a younger clone of himself ... which those who have followed his career shouldn’t be too thrown by. Under the direction of Oscar winner Ang Lee, of “Brokeback Mountain” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” fame, the story finds Smith playing an ultra-skilled assassin who decides his pace has slowed enough for him to get out of the killing game. Others aren’t happy about that, and to eliminate him, they send in the clone – and you basically end up with Smith fighting himself. It can be fun to watch that kind of movie trickery, but that’s not all that makes up a film. One like this has to be especially careful with its logic, since it’s establishing its own brand of it, and missteps are easy to make. There are enough of those to make you go, “Huh?,” if you stop to think about it while the picture is still running, However, Smith, Lee and their colleagues likely hope you’ll be dazzled enough by the overall concept and the visuals not to think too much. The always welcome Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a fellow operative sent to keep watch over Smith, while Clive Owen gets a break from leading-man status and does a nice job being nasty as an agency boss. Benedict Wong also offers good work as a Smith ally whose skills come in handy.
“Concussion” (2015): Smith did a commendably understated job as a real-life pathologist who made a connection between football players’ brain damage and concussions suffered during play. “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006): Smith was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for being as vulnerable as he’s been on-screen to date, and for teaming with real-life son Jaden in the true tale of a single father and aspiring stockbroker.
“Hitch” (2005): The charisma that is Will Smith was on full display in this perfectly suited comedy about a love coach felled by true love himself. “I, Robot” (2004): A mix of scifi and satire, which usually serves Smith well, worked for him in Isaac Asimov’s tale of a detective trying to determine whether a robot is a killer. “Ali” (2001): Smith transformed himself impressively in director Michael Mann’s biography of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. “Men in Black” (1997): In tandem with Tommy Lee Jones, Smith enjoyably defended Earth from aliens in this popular sci-fi comedy. “Independence Day” (1996): “Welcome to Earth!” That line, delivered to an alien along with a punch, cemented Smith’s success in this genre. “Bad Boys” (1995): Smith and Martin Lawrence proved a durable action-comedy team as amusing but efficient Miami police detectives. “Six Degrees of Separation” (1993): Smith started to prove his dramatic chops as a possible impostor who approaches a privileged couple.
Still, Smith is expectedly the big draw here, by design. Following his recent turn as the genie in the live-action “Aladdin,” he retains his rare brand of charisma that has served him so well in various genres, including this return to sci-fi after “I, Robot,” “I Am Legend” and – of course – the blockbuster “Independence Day.” There is only one Will Smith (despite there being two here), and that remains a bankable fact for studios. At the same time, “Gemini Man” is an interesting switch for director Lee. He’s no stranger to action nor to visual trickery, as “Life of Pi” also proved, and he’s clearly on his game in terms of providing a slick-looking product. The catch is to have a script that also works on all burners, and the picture is only partially successful on that count (despite a writing team that includes “Game of Thrones” alum David Benioff). Thematically, “Gemini Man” isn’t anything you haven’t seen before, but it does offer the technically unique sight of Will Smith vs. Will Smith. Spoiler alert: Will Smith wins.

and from there I give my creativity free rein.� Having confidence in the ability to create from a simple idea or vision is a stumbling block for many young designers, Chestnut said. “So many young designers are scared to go outside of the realm of the way people live and think,� he said. “They need to develop a confidence in their abilities.� Developing an artist’s confidence is what Chestnut strives to do with his Atlanta School of Floral Design. “I felt pushed to open a school where I can encourage young designers,� he said. “There are no manuals for creative people. They need to be open to the unknown. Creative people look at things differently than people who have formatted jobs where they do the same thing over and over.� Through his school, Chestnut said he gives new designers “timeless elements and techniques� that they can use in developing their own unique designs. “II give them an arsenal of techniques that they can go out and use to create timeless creations,� Chestnut said. ““Then it’s their design. It’s something that is uniquely theirs and something that only they can do.� By giving young designers the techniques, Chestnut says he gives them the process needed to build their own signature designs so when someone looks at a creation, that person knows who the creative mind was that developed the design. Where does the inspiration come from to design the themes of an entire wedding, home or business? “Flowers and events are part of a person’s life,� Chestnut said. “One idea, one color, one thought, one desire can lead to the overall concept for an entire event, whether it’s a wedding and reception, a home designed for the holidays or a business. I’ve planned entire weddings, helped people choose everything for their new home from the colors on the walls to furniture and even the towels. People keep coming back. After I’ve planned a person’s wedding, they will come to me for their daughter’s wedding or their home for Christmas. They have complete confidence in me. They know that I will give them what they want, no

“THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2” Despite the malady known as “sequel-itis,” an affliction based on sequels that really aren’t necessary, this animated spinoff of the popular gaming app isn’t a bad follow-up. The voice cast is largely a “Saturday Night Live” who’s-who led by “Angry Birds” returnee Jason Sudeikis as Red, who debates joining the residents of Pig Island – formerly the birds’ enemies – to mount an opposition to an eagle brigade that is targeting the hogs and has the birds next on their list. Red and pig leader Leonard, voiced by fellow “SNL” alum Bill Hader, then assemble a team to mount a defense based on special skills ... sort of like “The Magnificent Seven,” one of the amusing nods the filmmakers make to classic stories here. Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, Maya Rudolph, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s” Rachel Bloom and Peter Dinklage of “Game of Thrones” also have significant voice roles to accompany the unique computerized visuals. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“GOOD BOYS” If the antics among the young stars of this rowdy comedy are reminiscent of a Seth Rogen movie, there’s good reason ... he’s one of the producers here. Written by longtime creative partners Gene Stupnitsky (also debuting as a director here) and Lee Eisenberg, veterans of television’s “The Office,” the tale follows several gradeschool pals (played by Jacob Tremblay of “Room,” Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon) through a variety of misadventures – one involving the sudden need to replace a drone that they accidentally destroyed, and another concerning their possession of drugs that they’d much rather be rid of. Familiar faces popping up along the way include Will Forte, Lil Rel Howery, Retta, Michaela Watkins (“The Unicorn”) and the original British “Office’s” Stephen Merchant. DVD extras: six “makingof” documentaries; audio commentary by Stupnitsky and Eisenberg; deleted and extended scenes; alternate ending; outtakes. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON” Two people from vastly different backgrounds become unlikely traveling companions in this affecting drama from writer-directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz that has certain echoes of “Rain Man.” On the run from enemies, a thief (played by Shia LaBeouf) steals a boat and discovers a stowaway – a young man with Down syndrome (Zack Gottsagen, who was the specific inspiration for the filmmakers to make the movie), who hopes to make good on his dreams of becoming a pro wrestler. Dakota Johnson also stars as the younger traveler’s caretaker, whose search for him leads their paths to cross. John Hawkes, Bruce Dern, Jon Bernthal and Thomas Haden Church also are in the cast, as are pro wrestlers Mick Foley and Jake “The Snake” Roberts. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE BIG BANG THEORY: THE TWELFTH AND FINAL SEASON” One of the most successful sitcoms in television history is over now, but as with such other staples of the genre as “I Love Lucy” and “Friends,” it’s destined to remain visible for a very long time. Many guest stars from previous years return for valedictory appearances in this last round, including Bob Newhart, Christine Baranski and Wil Wheaton – but the Chuck Lorre-produced series culminates largely in Stockholm, where Sheldon and Amy (Jim Parsons, Mayim Bialik) are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, with their closest friends (Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch) in attendance. Penny (Cuoco) also has some big news of her own to deliver. A new
“Complete Series” set is available as well. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED” Mandy Moore had had other things to do lately, so she isn’t present in this underwater-thriller sequel, which is a follow-up in name and theme since the characters are different ... but the premise is reasonably familiar. Several teens decide to explore a city beneath the Mayan surface, which turns out to be a big mistake since a shark attack causes a cave-in and traps the young women, who literally have to swim for their lives while evading typically hungry pursuers. Expectedly, some have more success than others, and be forewarned that there’s a fairly sizable body count here. Two potential victims are played by the offspring of major stars – Jamie Foxx’s daughter Corinne and Sylvester Stallone’s grown child Sistine; John Corbett also appears. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by writer-director Johannes Roberts, producer James Harris and writer Ernest Riera. ›› (PG-13: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “COBRA KAI SEASONS 1 & 2” If you’ve ever wondered what happened to “Karate Kid” Daniel LaRussa, the answer is in this sequel series originally streamed on YouTube. Ralph Macchio reprises the role, showing that Daniel has fared quite well for himself in adulthood. Not so with his old enemy Johnny Lawrence (fellow returnee William Zabka), who tries to turn his situation around by assuming control of the Cobra Kai karate dojo. Their children (Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan) eventually become involved in their renewed rivalry. Martin Kove also is back as the fearsome John Kreese. Will Smith, one of those who oversaw a “Karate Kid” remake starring his son Jaden, is among the executive producers here.
