MTV heads for
‘The Hills’
again with new sequel series For many viewers, “The Hills” was one of the series that made “appointment television” a thing. In the days before shows became available virtually any time a viewer wanted via apps, streaming sites and On Demand, fans made sure they were in front of their sets for the premiere of each episode of the MTV reality series spawned by “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.” It’s a new TV environment but the same faces – with some of their spouses also present – as many of the principals reunite in “The Hills: New Beginnings,” which MTV debuts Monday, June 24. For certain “Hills” veterans, coming back wasn’t in the cards. Lauren Conrad, whose move to Los Angeles to pursue a fashion-design career (which ultimately came to fruition) was at the heart of “The Hills,” let it be known early on that she wouldn’t be involved. Also declining was Conrad’s “frenemy” Kristin Cavallari, who that maintained her schedule was too full, and there’s truth to that; besides running her lifestyle brand Uncommon James, she’s had her own reality show in E! Entertainment Television’s “Very Cavallari,” and she hosted the recent Fox revival of “Paradise Hotel.” Also absent this time is Lo Bosworth. However, in keeping with the “New Beginnings” idea, there are additions to the “Hills” cast ... a particularly notable one being actress Mischa Barton, whose former Fox drama series “The O.C.” stoked general interest in California’s Orange County enough for the “Laguna Beach” creators
and producers to develop their initial show in the overall franchise (which they purposely subtitled “The Real Orange County”). Also newly on hand are several wives of “Hills” stars: Frankie Delgado’s mate Jennifer; Jason Wahler’s mate Ashley; and Kaitlynn Carter, but without her husband Brody Jenner, who reportedly was fired from the series after being a no-show. Indeed, there’s been “Hills”- style drama even before the show hits the air. Here’s a look at what several of the returnees have been up to. Audrina Patridge: Divorced from motorcyclist and BMX dirt-bike rider Corey Bohan, sometimes actress and TV host Patridge has a daughter by him. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt: Following a stormy romance that polarized their “Hills” cohorts on the series, the couple married in 2008 and have a son. They’ve also stayed “real” by appearing on “Marriage Boot Camp” and England’s “Celebrity Big Brother” (twice). Whitney Port: After having her own “Hills” spinoff, “The City,” Whitney Eve fashion developer Port married one of that show’s producers – Tim Rosenman – and they now have a son. Stephanie Pratt: Spencer’s younger sister wrote a memoir that encompassed troubled times she’s had, and she also has participated in fashion design with a gown line.

Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller from John Dowd, one of Trump's lawyers at the time who has since resigned from the legal team. In the letter, the Trump's lawyers argue that a charge of illegal obstruction is moot because the Constitution empowers the president to, "if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon." Trump weighed in on Saturday on Twitter, asking "Is the Special Counsel/Justice

“Concussion” (2015): Smith does a commendably understated job as a reallife pathologist who made a connection between football players’ brain damage and concussions suffered during play. “I Am Legend” (2007): Meeting a big challenge for any actor – essentially holding the screen by himself for quite a while – Smith does an effective job with the last-man-on-Earth premise. “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006): Smith was rewarded with an
Oscar nomination for being as vulnerable as he’s been on-screen to date, and for teaming with real-life son Jaden in the true tale of a single father and aspiring stockbroker. “Hitch” (2005): The charisma that is Will Smith was on full display in this perfectly suited comedy about a love coach felled by true love himself. “I, Robot” (2004): A mix of sci-fi and satire, which usually serves Smith well, worked for him in Isaac Asimov’s tale of a detective trying to determine whether a robot is a killer. “Ali” (2001): Smith transformed himself impressively in director Michael Mann’s biography of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. “Men in Black” (1997): In tandem with Tommy Lee Jones, Smith enjoyably defended Earth from aliens in this popular sci-fi comedy. “Independence Day” (1996): “Welcome to Earth!” That line, delivered to an alien along with a punch, cemented Smith’s success in this genre. “Bad Boys” (1995): Smith and Martin Lawrence proved a durable actioncomedy team as amusing but efficient Miami police detectives.
“Six Degrees of Separation” (1993): Smith started to prove his dramatic chops as a possible impostor who approaches a privileged couple.

Will Smith puts the true magic in ‘Aladdin’
It’s a whole new world, all right, when it comes to the Disney studio’s latest effort to turn one of its animated classics into a liveaction feature. The results were mixed in trying that recently with “Dumbo,” and again, there are points on both ends of the scale of success with “Aladdin.” Given the exotic setting, you know it’s going to be a big production – so the catch is to keep the songs and emotions from being dwarfed by the outsized visual value, which director Guy Ritchie clearly puts an emphasis on. The true star of “Aladdin,” and this probably won’t come as a surprise, is Will Smith as the genie. Reinventing a role so strongly associated with Robin Williams is a tall order, and it takes someone who can inject his own mighty personality into the part. That would be Smith, whose genie is

set free by young Aladdin (Mena Massoud) – who needs his help to win the heart of Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott). Another part of Smith’s magic is that by having him on board for star power, the film’s makers could cast the other roles rather freely, and they’ve done a good job there. Still, the overall approach shortchanges feeling for action, another reason why these Disney live-action retellings don’t necessarily replace the animated originals so much as supplement them. With such credits as Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes” capers and “Lock, Stock and Smoking Barrels,” Ritchie isn’t necessarily a logical filmmaker for a project so reliant on pure fantasy. In a way, it’s the same thing that happened with Tim Burton guiding the live-action “Dumbo”: The result can be an intriguing mashup of seemingly discordant elements, or it can be so far off the chart, you can wonder why the attempt even was made. Since the figurative shots were being called by Disney executives, it’s certain that Ritchie was given something of a playbook to follow, to hit “Aladdin’s” necessary notes – certainly in the musical sense, but also in story terms. Still, a moviemaker brings his own sensibility, however famous the tale he’s telling is; this surely is Ritchie’s take on “Aladdin,” and it helps to be cognizant of what he’s done before in watching his work here. With that said, many of the film’s patrons simply will want a fresh view of something they already know and love. The newer “Aladdin” casts its spell to a certain degree, but for the full experience, keep the cartoon in mind.
The Disney studio has been on a kick of turning some its most popular animated features into live-action attractions, and that might seem especially tricky with a title character such as the one this has ... but consider that Tim Burton is the director, and the remake turns out to be its own creature. Digital effects bring the baby elephant separated from its mother to life – and yes, there are still those famous parentand-child moments that tug hard on your heart, but there also are the famously bizarre Burton touches that keep the result at arm’s length. While Danny DeVito is wonderfully warm as the operator of the circus that becomes the big-eared, flying Dumbo’s new home, Michael Keaton (Burton’s earlier Batman) plays a really sinister rival showman. Colin Farrell, Eva Green and Alan Arkin also are in the esoteric cast of a “Dumbo” that ultimately works a little too hard not to be defined as a kids’ movie. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

However, their former boss (Salma Hayek) catches on to their scheme, putting their plan in serious doubt. One of the screen’s all-time animated classics gets an almost-70th-anniversary tribute with a new “Walt Disney Signature Collection” edition, telling the famous saga of the sweet but emotionally abused title character (voiced by Ilene Woods) who wishes for a better life than the one her nasty stepmother and stepsisters have engineered for her. Her chance finally comes via a fairy godmother (voice of veteran character actress Verna Felton) and a royal ball of which Cinderella becomes the belle, certainly in the eyes of the prince who must use a left-behind glass slipper to trace his new love interest. Also of special note in the voice cast is later talk-show host Mike Douglas, who does the singing for Prince Charming. The Blu-ray version is packed with special features, both new ones and others carried over from previous releases. The live-action 2015 Disney remake starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James and Helena Bonham Carter – and directed by Kenneth Branagh – also receives a same-day home-video relaunch that includes its debut in the 4K Ultra HD format. ›››› (G) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“POLDARK: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION”
This series set is “complete” if you’re going solely by the original 1970s edition of the drama made for PBS’ “Masterpiece,” and not also by the much more recent update, which isn’t included here. Robin Ellis – who also had a role in the update – plays the title part of Ross Poldark, a British military captain who has a lot to deal with upon returning home from war. The fiancee he left behind (Jill Townsend) has taken up with his cousin (Clive Francis), he has major business concerns, and he has an ever-present enemy in George Warleggan (Ralph Bates). This version was comprised of two seasons, while the current revision will end with the forthcoming fifth season. “MANHUNT, SEASON 1”
Well-known internationally for his title portrayal in ‘Doc Martin,“ British actor Martin Clunes has a much different role in this fact-inspired drama. The brutal murder of a French student in London sets up the first major case for a detective (Clunes) whose hunches worry his superiors, though if they prove accurate, they could help to find and stop a serial killer. The teleplay was inspired by the memoirs of the investigator Clunes portrays, Colin Sutton, and a second season of the show has been ordered. Director Blake Edwards engineered a number of projects for his iconic-actress wife Julie Andrews, including this 1974 mix of espionage tale and romantic drama that boasts a superb score by frequent James Bond-series composer John Barry. Edwards also adapted the script from an Evelyn Anthony novel, with Andrews (who made this her first movie after a four-year break from the big screen) playing a British government employee who becomes involved with a Soviet military attache during a Caribbean vacation – attracting the attention of her superiors, who are concerned that the man’s true intention is to persuade her to give up diplomatic secrets.
