FX’s ‘Snowfall’ moves on without John Singleton To complete the newest round of “Snowfall,” the cast and crew had to push through the pain of losing one of its key creative forces. Oscar-nominated filmmaker John Singleton (“Boyz n the Hood”) was a co-creator and executive producer of FX’s drug-culture drama, which debuts its third season Wednesday, July 10. Several episodes remained to be filmed at the time of his death in April at age 51, and Dave Andron – the “Snowfall” showrunner who created it with Singleton and Eric Amadio – “marvel(s) in thinking about” how those behind and in front of the cameras pressed onward to get the job done. “People talk about how someone would have wanted something, and I’m always a little skeptical of that,” Andron reflects, “but after years of being around John, everyone was very unequivocal about him not wanting them to stop. He loved that this story was being told, and he was very proud of the direction it had gone in. And people were amazing. They just powered through. “It was over the last three or four episodes that this happened,” notes Andron. “There were two memorial services, and we shut down for those days. FX was really wonderful about acknowledging that people needed time to process it and to grieve.” In storytelling terms, Season 3 of “Snowfall” dives deeper into opposing aims regarding the drug trade in mid-1980s
Los Angeles. Neighbors Franklin Saint (played by Damson Idris) and Andre Wright (Marcus Henderson) continue on different sides of the law, and Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson) and the CIA have their own agenda in the crackcocaine-importing case that local police have been probing in South Central L.A. “The story is about what happened to the neighborhood,” Andron notes. “Franklin and Andre both love this place, but Franklin has no idea what he will have wrought (through his drug-dealing). We knew it would be rich terrain when we had earned the right to have these two guys go at each other.” Even after two seasons, Andron says he’s gotten little feedback on “Snowfall” from the law-enforcement community, “maybe because they might not want to put themselves in a position of standing up and being counted among people who were letting things just kind of happen (during the period the show covers).” “Justified” alum Andron reports he and Singleton had a plan for “Snowfall’s” future well before the latter’s passing. “There was discussion about doing four seasons or five, or even possibly six,” Andron confirms. “That was as much time, frankly, as we felt we needed to tell this story. FX has always told us, ‘Think not only about next season, but about the life of the show.’ That’s an incredible gift.”

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN
“Red Sparrow” (2018): Lawrence has to play chameleon, and does quite a good job of it, in this espionage thriller about a Russian agent who uses a variety of guises and identities to accomplish her missions. “Passengers” (2016): Though some reviewed her hefty paycheck instead of her acting, Lawrence does commendable work as one of the extremely few people revived aboard a spacecraft that’s on a very long journey. “Joy” (2015): Working again with director David O. Russell – her frequent collaborator – Lawrence gives a spirited performance in the true story of Joy Mangano, who deals with various personal complications as she develops the Miracle Mop and other convenience-targeted inventions. “American Hustle” (2013): Reteamed with Russell, Lawrence is terrific as the loosecannon wife of a con artist (Christian Bale). “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012): It’s amazing to think how few films Lawrence made before she won a well-earned Oscar for another Russell movie, casting her as a troubled young widow who becomes the possible salvation for a man (Bradley Cooper) with problems of his own.

The ‘X-Men’ saga wraps up with ‘Dark Phoenix’ What happens when one of the “X-Men” mutants goes bad? The question actually can be posed several ways in the case of “Dark Phoenix,” which is intended to bring an end to that particular Marvel franchise, at least for the time being. The central character considers doing evil, but it’s also the “X-Men” series that goes bad in this case, with a chapter that really indicates it’s time for it to take a rest. Jean Grey is the character in question, played again by Sophie Turner of “Game of Thrones” fame. Though she previously didn’t do so much that she ended up outperforming the X-Men – nor, for that matter, the X-Women – Jean is front and center here, after her role in saving a space shuttle results in her becoming the most powerful person in the whole group.
“House at the End of the Street” (2012): Though it seems like a fairly standard role – a neighborhood newcomer threatened by a nearby resident – Lawrence does much with it. “The Hunger Games” (2012): Lawrence scored an enormous hit with the first movie adapted from Suzanne Collins’ novels about a competition to survive among teen warriors-in-the-making. “X-Men: First Class” (2011): It takes a lot, in physicality and attitude, to succeed Rebecca Romijn as Mystique ... and Lawrence manages that, and then some. “Like Crazy” (2011): She’s not the female lead here, but Lawrence lends commendable support in this romance between two students, one of whom faces possible deportation. “Winter’s Bone” (2010): Lawrence started to make a name for herself with this drama about a young Ozarks woman and her many family complications.

It also means a struggle for her in choosing between using her newly enhanced powers for right or wrong. Jennifer Lawrence returns as Raven, who tries to show Jean the light ... while Jessica Chastain contributes her star power in an atypical appearance as a villain who would be only too happy to bring Jean over to her side. Sure, there is loads of female empowerment in the literal sense here, but the movie (directed by series veteran Simon Kinberg) doesn’t really go anywhere despite its bounty of showdowns and staredowns. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are among others who turn up again, and while that does provide a certain link to some of the “X-Men” films that preceded this one, a notable number of them were getting impatient even before now. “Dark Phoenix” does little if anything to relieve that. Turner acquits herself well enough in the title role, but the story treads territory that has been covered before without really freshening it, though certain figures apparently meet their Waterloo. It’s a sure death knell when viewers have paid again to see something they feel they’ve already seen. It’s also a lesson in knowing when to quit while you’re ahead, but when there’s supposedly more money to be made, it can be hard for a studio to know when to put the brakes on unless the public tells it so. By the time you’ve gotten this far into a franchise, you’d better give more or give up. And with “Dark Phoenix,” it’s appropriately closing time.
“PET SEMATARY” The success of a remake of Stephen King’s “It” has inspired other filmmakers to take a fresh look at the novelist’s catalog – which, for a while, seemed to yield a movie a month – and this effective update of another of his thrillers is among the results. The author’s beloved Maine is the setting as a Boston doctor (played by Jason Clarke) moves his family there, and their new home promises tranquility ... but with King’s imprint attached, you just know that is not to be. The most obvious sign of that: the backyard that long has been used as a makeshift cemetery for family pets by area residents, particularly younger ones who have some bizarre burial rites. The newcomers have brought along their own pet, a beloved cat, which automatically stacks the deck ... and makes a certain plot turn entirely foreseeable. It also puts a welcome spotlight on the ever-great John Lithgow, portraying a neighbor whose knowledge of the territory and its secrets ultimately leads to considerable terror for all concerned. Much has been made of the fact that 14-year-old “blackish” co-star Marsai Martin became the youngest movie executive producer in history with this enjoyable comedy-fantasy, which reverses the “Big” and “13 Going in 30” premise to make an adult younger. Regina Hall (also an executive producer here) plays the older incarnation of the central character, a demanding tech-firm boss who is sent back to her childlike self – and portrayed at that point by Martin – and gets all too clear a picture of how miserably she has treated others. She then sets out to right her past wrongs, aiming to return to her grown state. Co-stars include Issa Rae (“Insecure’), Justin Hartley (”This Is Us“), Tone Bell and past and present ”Saturday Night Live“ players Rachel Dratch and Mikey Day. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“GOTHAM: THE FIFTH AND FINAL SEASON” Since this Fox series largely was about Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazouz) journey toward becoming Batman, the ending shouldn’t come as a shock in this last round of the thematically and literally dark drama, for which Ben McKenzie – alias the show’s Jim Gordon – directed and wrote episodes. Though the Gotham City Police Department does its best to maintain law and order, such famously villainous figures as the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and the Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) do their best to see that anarchy and larceny reign. Donal Logue, Morena Baccarin (who married McKenzie during the show’s run), Sean Pertwee, Erin Richards and Camren Bicondova also wrap up their roles, with Shane West joining the cast for the concluding season as nemesis Bane. “AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: CHASING THE MOON” Television programs tied to the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing are plentiful right now, and debuting on home video the same week PBS televises it, this three-episode documentary traces the so-called “space race” from its inception up to the Apollo 11 mission that saw Neil Armstrong set foot on the lunar surface. While the program deals with the literal nuts and bolts that got rockets ready to fly, it also considers the personal stories of those who occupied the ships and oversaw the technology that put them aloft. It also looks at the genuine media circus that transpired, as enterprising reporters tried to delve beyond the talking points that NASA officials would have preferred they stuck to. ››› (Not rated: P) (Also on Blu-ray)
“BROAD CITY: SEASON 5” Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer recently wrapped up their Comedy Central show, and this set compiles the final 10 episodes of their misadventures as friends and twentysomething New Yorkers. The finale does have the feeling of an ending, though it also indicates that the women’s connection doesn’t stop where the series does. Glazer and Jacobson wrote that concluding tale as well as others, and they also directed episodes here. Hannibal Buress, John Gemberling. Susie Essman and Bob Balaban reprise their recurring roles, and guest stars include Alan Cumming and D’Arcy Carden. “Broad City: The Complete Series” also is being released. “PETER PAN” Before there was the animated Disney classic – or any other screen version of James M. Barrie’s muchbeloved story of the Never-Never Land resident who never grew up – this silent 1924 treatment started an unspoken tradition of women playing the title role by casting Betty Bronson (who would appear a year later in the first “Ben-Hur” movie) in the part. The familiar elements are all here, including Captain Hook, the Darling children and Tinker Bell.
