Hulu series features another ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ Courtesy of Hulu, the time has come for four more weddings and another funeral. After its recent Red Nose Day mini-sequel, one of the most enduringly popular of all romantic-comedy movies gets a series spinoff when the streaming service debuts the first four episodes of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” Wednesday, July 31. The characters are new, but any fan of the film will find familiar turf as the show – co-developed by Mindy Kaling, with original writer Richard Curtis among the executive producers – centers on the lives of another closeknit group of friends in London. The ensemble cast includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Guz Khan, Sophia La Porta, Nikesh Patel (“Indian Summers”), John Reynolds and Disney Channel alum Brandon Mychal Smith (“Sonny With a Chance”). However, the most recognizable star may be Rebecca Rittenhouse, who worked with Kaling on “The Mindy Project” (during its time on Hulu) and also was a regular on “Red Band Society” and “Blood & Oil.” Her character Ainsley’s scheduled nuptials bring the friends back together in the “Four Weddings” premiere, but her business and family matters help fuel subsequent stories. “She is at a crossroads in her life where she is forced to decide who she is, what she wants, and what really matters to her,” Rittenhouse says of Ainsley. “That seems like an obvious thing that people go through as they enter their 30s, but maybe it isn’t? I see so many people making big

life decisions based on other people’s expectations, without stopping to consider their own values. Luckily for Ainsley, she is truly forced down the path of self-discovery.” Rittenhouse came to the series as a devotee of the film. “I’m a big romantic-comedy fan,” she notes, “so ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ is a movie I love. I think what we’ve done is a great love letter to the movie, but it is also a completely fresh reimagining. Also, (the film’s) Kristin Scott Thomas is one of my all-time favorite actresses; I’ve watched the scene where she tells Charles (Hugh Grant) she loves him maybe 50 times, just to learn from her.” Also linking the show to the movie, Andie MacDowell makes a guest appearance ... not in her original role as Carrie, but as Ainsley’s rather challenging mother. “Andie is hilarious and vivacious,” says Rittenhouse. “Working with her was a blast. It was so nice to get a chance to meet her.” A personal tragedy during production drew Rittenhouse closer to the “Four Weddings” cast and crew: “My mother passed away while we were filming, which was a very intense experience, but I could not have felt more supported by everyone involved in this production. It was truly amazing.”

It’s time to cleanse your circle of friends. By eliminating parasites, you’ll appreciate your true friends more and your leisure activities will become more satisfying.

VIRGO

Your social life is certainly very active. You’ll be in charge of organizing an event that successfully brings people together. You have to wait for some people to catch up.

LIBRA

Either on your own, with a family member or a business partner, you’ll take the initial steps in starting a big project. Don’t be surprised to hear from your boss while you’re on vacation; they can’t manage without you.

SCORPIO

Being on vacation won’t stop you from dreaming about your next adventure. You may also spontaneously decide to return to your studies at the beginning of the new school year.

SAGITTARIUS

Don’t be afraid of change; in this case, it will only make things better. A romantic getaway or an adventure with friends will be the perfect end to a vacation already filled with great memories.

CAPRICORN

Give yourself a makeover and don’t spare any expense. New clothes will look good and be necessary for your new responsibilities at work. Customers will be impressed by your presence.

AQUARIUS

You’ll get a promotion that will allow you to pay off most of your debts. Working overtime will further help your financial situation. Don’t neglect your health or your partner.

PISCES

People will be impressed with your dynamic ideas. You’ll find yourself on a pedestal and receive admiration from all sides. You’ll accomplish something that people will applaud for a long time.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Beatles’ Top 10 MoviesBY JAY BOBBIN “Give My Regards to Broad Street” (1984): Paul McCartney wrote this musical-comedy, in which he plays a version of himself as he tries to recover missing master tapes of his music – with his wife Linda and Ringo Starr also becoming involved. “Time Bandits” (1981): George Harrison became a movie producer of note, one of his most successful ventures being this Terry Gilliam-directed fantasy about a youngster (played by Craig Warnock) who defies time and space to travel to various eras ... often accompanied by dwarves. “Live and Let Die” (1973): McCartney joined the ranks of James Bond theme-song composers as he and spouse Linda devised the title tune (which they performed with Wings, resulting in one of the group’s biggest hits) for Roger Moore’s debut as Agent 007. “Let It Be” (1970): An Oscar winner for its score, this documentary about the making of The Beatles’ same-titled album was the foursome’s final tandem screen project – just as the LP was their last studio release. “The Magic Christian” (1969): Ringo Starr commendably held his own opposite the notoriously challenging Peter Sellers in this satire about an orphan and his benefactor, featuring songs composed by McCartney (and performed by Badfinger). “Yellow Submarine” (1968): The actual Beatles didn’t appear until the end of the movie, but their animated likenesses were the “stars” of this totally engaging fantasy that found them fighting the Blue Meanies. “How I Won the War” (1967): John Lennon made a bid for solo movie stardom (which ultimately became his one effort toward that) as a World War II soldier in this largely satirical tale. “Magical Mystery Tour” (1967): Filmed at a deactivated military airfield and excoriated by reviewers – though it still has value as a Beatles curio – this improvised and highly experimental comedy was made for British television, then released theatrically. “Help!” (1965): A bigger budget and color (!) were added to the Beatles’ second movie, sort of a spy spoof that included location filming in the Bahamas ... done while Sean Connery was making the Bond adventure “Thunderball” there. “A Hard Day’s Night” (1964): “Beatlemania” already was in high gear when the Liverpool lads’ first film was released, and many critics were surprised by the inventiveness of director Richard Lester’s “a day in the life” approach to the quartet’s hijinks.

BY JAY BOBBIN

Beatles fans can believe, somewhat, in ‘Yesterday’ Say that George, John, Paul and Ringo never united, and that an entire catalog of some of the best-known songs of all time never existed. That would be just like “Yesterday,” which is the name of an entertaining fantasy based on the conceit of a world without the Beatles. Driven by two top talents, director Danny Boyle and writer Richard Curtis, the tale posits a 12-second blackout in which all memory of the Fab Four is wiped out ... almost. Only one struggling musician, played nicely by Himesh Patel, remembers the Beatles and their tunes – and decides to “introduce” and claim the songs as his own. That results in the character ultimately having an ethical crisis as the public marvels at his creative genius, which of course is really the genius of others. It also yields

some moments of inspired humor, as when Ed Sheeran (playing himself) suggests that a certain song would be better with the title “Hey Dude.” The thing about “Yesterday” is not to oversell it. It’s a pleasant diversion, helped also by good acting turns by Lily James and “Saturday Night Live’s” Kate McKinnon as the hero’s manager and agent, plus a funny cameo by James Corden. However, the humor of Curtis works best when one doesn’t approach it with huge expectations (though he readily admits that the story idea here was someone else’s and he was brought in to script it). If you think back to “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and even “Notting Hill” and “Love Actually,” the Curtis touches evolved organically. And often, they were small moments that sometimes can be noticed only upon multiple viewings. Chances are very good that it will be the same with “Yesterday” as time goes on; its concept of “no Beatles” is quite a bit to grasp initially, and that probably will be the overriding journey for most moviegoers the first time around. However, the smaller strokes – particularly aspects of the relationship between Patel and James – seem likely to be recognized more upon second and third (and beyond) screenings. That’s the quiet magic of many Curtiswritten movies. As nice as it is, “Yesterday” doesn’t change the world ... but at the same time, it does change the world figuratively, thanks to the device of erasing one of its most legendary quartets.

“LONG SHOT” One of the most fun kind of movies is the type that puts together two stars who are utterly dissimilar – but by the nature of the story, you know they’ll have to find common ground. This is that sort of picture, and once you know it teams Oscar winner Charlize Theron and noted screen prankster Seth Rogen, it’s easy to tell that this certainly is that odd-couple kind of tale. She plays a Secretary of State who has presidential aspirations, and he’s an investigative reporter who throws protocol and politeness to the wind in the trademark Rogen way. She also happens to have been his babysitter a couple of decades ago ... and when she needs a new speechwriter to make her sound more down-to-earth, guess who she hires? Questioning the credibility here is like sticking a pin in a balloon, but there is fun to be had simply in riding with the premise. Lisa Kudrow, “True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgard, “Fresh Off the Boat’s” Randall Park and “Better Call Saul’s” Bob Odenkirk also appear. DVD extras: 11 “making-of” documentaries. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“UGLYDOLLS” A considerable amount of musical talent is involved in this animated tale, including two current members of the judging panel on “The Voice” – Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson. Within the boundaries of Uglyville, the residents live however they want and however they are without judgment from others, but that changes once they enter the outside world. That situation ultimately gives them (and viewers) relevant messages about the value of being different and the nobility of staying true to oneself, regardless of pressures to conform. Nick Jonas, Janelle Monae, Bebe Rexha and Pitbull also are members of the voice cast, as are Emma Roberts and comics Wanda Sykes and Gabriel Iglesias. ››› (PG: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “THE GOOD PLACE: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON” This most recent round of the clever NBC comedy series has turned out to be the next-tolast one, since creator and executive producer Michael Schur recently announced that the upcoming fourth season will be the show’s final one. This round reboots the concept in a way, since it sends Eleanor (Kristen Bell, who’s also appearing in a “Veronica Mars” revival on Hulu) and several others who expired back to Earth, where they get the chance to be better people than they were the first time around. Michael (Ted Danson) works covertly to make sure all of them cross one another’s paths. William Jackson Harper, D’Arcy Carden, Jameela Jamil and Manny Jacinto also star. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “THE INTRUDER” More typically one of the good guys in his roles, Dennis Quaid makes one of his occasional trips to the dark side in this melodrama, effectively playing a house seller who takes a more-than-typical interest in the buyers (Michael Ealy, Meagan Good). They’re initially happy with their Napa Valley purchase, but as the former owner makes himself a constant presence in their lives, they start to have doubts about their new residence. Joseph Sikora (“Power”) co-stars. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by Ealy, Good, director Dean Taylor, writer David Loughery and producer Roxanne Avent; deleted scenes; outtakes; alternate ending. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “GLORY” To mark its 30th anniversary, director Edward Zwick’s memorable, true Civil War drama is making its debut in the 4K Ultra HD format. The first of Denzel Washington’s two (to date) Oscar-winning performances is a major highlight of the film, which recounts the story of the first all-black volunteer military unit. Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes play the unlikely, Boston-bred leaders of the soldiers, with Morgan Freeman as the sergeant who does much to unite all the members of the company while they face challenges from both Union and Confederate troops. The movie also earned Academy Awards for cinematography (by Freddie Francis) and sound; Andre Braugher and John Finn also are among notable cast members. ›››› (R: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “MASTERPIECE MYSTERY: GRANTCHESTER – THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON”

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 PG, 1 hr 26 min Animated, Comedy

ALADDIN (2019) PG, 2 hr 8 min Action/Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Making its home-video debut as it continues to air on PBS, this round of the drama series introduces a new vicar: Reverend Will Davenport (played by Tom Brittney), who joins police detective Geordie Keating (continuing star Robson Green) – now feeling more than a bit out of place – help solve 1950s-era crimes while nursing some secrets of his own. Typically, the stories revolve around murder investigations, but such cultural aspects of the time as the then-nascent civil-rights movement also factor in. James Norton, whom Brittney succeeds in the show, returns for his final appearance as Sidney Chambers. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
