‘Sweetbitter’ serves up heightened angst in Season 2 of Starz restaurant drama Following up on the exposition of Season 1, the layers of the proverbial onion begin to peel away for the characters as the Starz restaurant drama “Sweetbitter” returns for its second course this week. Premiering Sunday, July 14, the new season finds the workers at the chic Manhattan eatery 22W facing their own challenges. Chief among them is smalltown girl Tess (Ella Purnell), who is grappling with an awareness of her own power now that she has some knowledge and experience in waitressing and life under her belt. That’s not great news for her mentor and pseudo-idol Simone (Caitlin FitzGerald), a fellow server who feels trapped in her limited world at the restaurant and dogged by her mysterious relationship with bartender Jake (Tom Sturridge). Also feeling hopelessly bound to his workplace is general manager Howard (Paul Sparks), who often finds himself playing referee for his spirited charges, which also include backwaiters Will (Evan Jonigkeit), Ari (Eden Epstein) and Sasha (Daniyar) and server Heather (Jasmine Mathews). “I think what’s great about Season 2 for all the characters,” FitzGerald says, “is we get to know them a lot more and a lot more intimately. ... I think as the onion is peeled, the relationships get more complicated and the dynamics get more complicated. And I think especially for Simone, there are a few instances that really sort of challenge her authority and challenge her perceived control, particularly relating with Tess, and that’s hard for her and complicated.”
And that relationship, FitzGerald says, will evolve as the season progresses. “I think Simone saw in Tess perhaps in some ways a younger version of herself,” she explains, “and certainly someone who would readily be an acolyte. And as that kind of starts to shift in Season 2, it’s very confronting for Simone. Simone is a control freak, to say the least. And Simone’s control is a fragile edifice that she’s built. This restaurant is kind of her kingdom, which is tragic in a way because her world is really small. But when her control gets threatened, she doesn’t take it very well.” Things don’t go so easily for Simone with Howard, either. “I would say the relationship between them is a little fraught this season,” FitzGerald says. “I think historically Simone and Howard have kind of figured out how they both operate in this restaurant and where the power lies and that also gets challenged this season and sort of thrown up in the air. “They definitely know each other too well,” she continues with a laugh, “and I think at one point Paul and I talked about there having been some kind of romance affair between them. But they’ve known each other forever also, so it’s been kind of when they get along it’s really great and they’re really close. “But when they don’t get along they have a lot of ammo on each other and they kind of know how to push each other’s buttons.”

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Liam Neeson’s Top 10 BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Non-Stop” (2014): Neeson is in fine form – in a confined space – in this airborne melodrama about an air marshal trying to identify an extortionist who’s killing passengers aboard a flight. “Taken” (2008): Not deemed an action star previously, Neeson changed that perception by playing an ex-spy combing Europe for his kidnapped daughter. “Love Actually” (2003): Neeson fares wonderfully, mainly with a young costar (Thomas Sangster), within a large ensemble cast as a man struggling to cope with losing the love of his life. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999): George Lucas was very specific about casting the first prequel, so there’s no question Neeson is ideal as Jedi legend Qui-Gon Jinn. “Les Miserables” (1998): Neeson proves ideal casting as Jean Valjean, the desperate thief who endures a life of pursuit by the relentless Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush). “Michael Collins” (1996): Necessary gusto is supplied in full force by Neeson as one of the figureheads of the Irish Republican Army. “Schindler’s List” (1993): Neeson is superb as a war profiteer, who literally bargains for the lives of Jews marked for Nazi execution, in director Steven Spielberg’s powerful and true drama. “Darkman” (1990): The required theatricality is executed well by Neeson in playing a disfigured scientist who cloaks himself to avenge his assault. “The Good Mother” (1988): Neeson emotes well as a divorcee’s (Diane Keaton) new lover, unaware he might cost her custody of her daughter. “Suspect” (1987): Neeson’s sheer physical presence counts for a lot here, since he barely makes a sound as a hulking murder suspect.

‘Men in Black’ is back, but to decidedly mixed results The “Men in Black” concept yielded three movie blockbusters, and seven years after the last of those, its studio has gone back to the well to try to redevelop the series without most of the original team (Mistake One, usually) that included stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones and director Barry Sonnenfeld. “Men in Black: International” has the requisite aliens and people in cool business suits saying cool things, but in trying to emulate what the earlier trilogy seemed to achieve so effortlessly – though the bountiful special effects obviously take a lot of effort – the latest chapter simply tries too hard. And it very notably lacks Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones, whose ideal teamwork was a huge factor in the first three pictures being such giant hits.

Instead of them, we now get Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson (reunited from “Thor: Ragnarok”) as ultra-secret government agents and new partners who have to stop a global threat from aliens, the same sort of case their movie predecessors had. The more immediate peril facing the duo is a pair of twins who can change their images at will, giving the good guys all sorts of headaches. Thompson, who also was the love interest in the “Creed” movies, fares rather nicely with what is the more original of the central roles. Hemsworth’s duty is to play Mr. Irresistible, or an agent who generally skates by on sheer charm – and most of his colleagues know it, so his comeuppance here entertains them while it rattles him. It’s pretty much a one-note part for Hemsworth, though, something ordinary in a story that relies heavily on the extraordinary. F. Gary Gray is a solid action director, and his films (“The Negotiator,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” etc.) often have allowed for solid character development, too. However, his duty on “Men in Black: International” largely is engineered to hit notes similar to those that have entertained the series’ fans before. Within that spectrum, former “Love Actually” scene-sharers Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson are welcome presences here as superiors of the Men (and Woman) in Black. Overall, though, “Men in Black: International” doesn’t have enough that’s unique to make it a lock to restart the franchise. It’s an energetic attempt but, in the end, a bit too energetic for its own good.
“SHAZAM!” With as many superhero movies as there have been lately, if another one is going to jump on that bandwagon, it had better bring something different. Happily, this one does ... a light touch that stands out when so many other films in the genre have played it seriously. Zachary Levi (“Chuck,” “Tangled”) has just the right look and spirit to play the transformed DC Comics image of Billy Batson, a foster child foreseen as the world’s savior by a wizard. (Levi shares the main role with the younger Asher Angel.) Helped by a crash course in heroes from a fellow foster youngster (Jack Dylan Grazer, of “It”), the high-powered Shazam sets out to stop a villain – played by Mark Strong – who has brought the Seven Deadly Sins to physical and lethal life. Those monsters actually give the picture some pretty scary moments for what’s meant to be a generally bemused take on the superhero premise – but mostly, the movie is a nice antidote for viewers who fear those who wear capes and throw hammers and shields have gotten a bit too grim. Djimon Hounsou also appears. DVD extras: five “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; outtakes; “motion comic.” ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

Films steeped in faith have done quite well at the box office in recent years, and this latest of them is effectively staged by Roxann Dawson, an actress who has done lots of television directing but had her own breakthrough into moviemaking here. Chrissy Metz (“This Is Us”) plays a woman whose adopted son (Marcel Ruiz) falls through the ice on a lake and, after an extended time submerged, may not survive. However, when his mother arrives at the hospital and offers prayers over him, he revives and then recovers with the help of an ace medical team. Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter and Dennis Haysbert also give the picture plenty of cred in the performing arena – and while the tale is front-loaded with emotion, it ultimately earns all the feels it inspires. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Dawson and producer DeVon Franklin; deleted scene; photo gallery. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “SPACE: 1999 – THE COMPLETE SERIES” A cult favorite, this mid-1970s sci-fi series – one of the earlier shows to take advantage of the firstrun syndication market for dramas in the U.S. – now gets a full Blu-ray release (only the first of its two seasons has been available in that format in America previously) while also getting a relaunch on DVD. Visionary producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson wedded the miniatures and special effects of their “Supermarionation” classics such as “Thunderbirds” to the human saga of Moonbase Alpha, blown off its home on the lunar surface and into an odyssey across the universe. Martin Landau and Barbara Bain lead the cast here, along with Barry Morse (“The Fugitive”) and Catherine Schell. In addition to the 48 episodes of the series, an additional disc offers a bounty of special features. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) “KLUTE” In 1971, Jane Fonda’s status as a polarizing figure partially informed the reaction to her edgy performance – which ultimately yielded her first Oscar win – in director Alan J. Pakula’s very adult melodrama, now getting deluxe Criterion Collection home-video treatment. The title role belongs to Donald Sutherland, playing a detective on a missing-persons case that a New York prostitute (Fonda) might be able to help him solve, though she’s reluctant to assist him initially. While the script never loses sight of the mystery at its heart, it’s also an intense study of Fonda’s character, whose developing personal connection to Klute only deepens her troubled feelings. The excellent supporting cast includes Roy Scheider, Charles Cioffi and Jean Stapleton, with early appearances by Veronica Hamel, Kevin Dobson and Sylvester Stallone. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; interviews with Fonda and Pakula. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON” It’s no coincidence that this superb, Tom Hanks-produced HBO miniseries makes its Blu-ray debut in the week that also encompasses the 50th anniversary of man’s first walk on the lunar surface. Indeed, the Apollo 11 mission is the subject of an entire episode, though the drama traces all of the Apollo flights as well as the preceding Mercury and Gemini programs. Hanks – who also serves as host – directed the premiere, and Sally Field called the shots on a chapter (in which she also appears) focused primarily on astronauts’ wives. The huge cast includes such familiar faces as Mark Harmon, Tony Goldwyn, Tim Daly, Steve Zahn, Bryan Cranston, Cary Elwes, Adam Baldwin, Gary Cole, Elizabeth Perkins, JoBeth Williams, John Slattery, Rita Wilson (alias Mrs. Hanks) and a pre-politics Al Franken. ›››› (Not rated: AS, P) “AMERICAN MASTERS: ROBERT SHAW – MAN OF MANY VOICES” Not to be confused with the same-named “Jaws” actor, the legendary choral-music conductor is recalled by this recently televised PBS profile. A winner of 16 Grammys and a Peabody Award among other honors, Shaw enjoyed great renown for his professional accomplishments, but his personal flaws – including a penchant for heavy drinking – constantly cast a shadow over them, at least from his viewpoint. Yo-Yo Ma, President Jimmy Carter (who invited Shaw to perform at his inauguration, and later chose him for a government appointment) and former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young are among those who comment on Shaw’s life and career, with concert footage and excerpts from archival letters enhancing the documentary. ››› (Not rated)
