What’s New NOW On April 17 “Overboard” The main characters in an amiable 1987 Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell romantic comedy get a gender switch in this 2018 remake, with Anna Faris starring as a struggling single mother who takes advantage of a rich cad (Eugenio Derbez, who also produced) with amnesia, convincing him that the two of them are married. Eva Longoria and John Hannah also star in this do-over, which did so-so business at the box office. Faris was praised by reviewers for bringing vulnerable charm to an under-written role. April 18 “Mid90s” Set in mid-1990s Los Angeles, this 2018 comedy movie follows 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic, “The Unspoken”) as he spends a summer navigating between an unhappy family life and a group of new friends he meets at a local skate shop. Katherine Waterston, Lucas Hedges and Na-kel Smith also star for Jonah Hill in his directorial debut. ‘Les Miserables’ becomes a television ‘Masterpiece’ on PBS The latest version of “Les Miserables” has something it didn’t while it was being filmed: an Oscar-winning star. Olivia Colman earned an Academy Award as best actress for “The Favourite” after completing PBS’ “Masterpiece” retelling of Victor Hugo’s classic about desperate thief Jean Valjean (now played by “The Affair’s” Dominic West) and his dogged nemesis, Inspector Javert (“Selma’s” David Oyelowo). Colman and Adeel Akhtar portray Madame and Monsieur Thenardier in the BBC coproduction, also starring Lily Collins (“Mirror Mirror”) as Fantine and beginning its six-part run Sunday, April 14 (check local listings).
For its newest incarnation, “Les Miserables” was adapted by two-time Emmy winner Andrew Davies, cowriter of the original, British “House of Cards.” He admits he “never read” the Hugo novel before getting the assignment, adding that after he did, “I thought it was a terrific story that resonated so much with the world we live in today, particularly, I thought I’d just want to have a go at this.” A racial element exists between the central enemies in the new “Les Miserables,” and Oyelowo (also one of the drama’s executive producers, as is West) notes, “Contrary to some popular belief, not every black man living in Europe in the early 1800s was some kind of slave or subservient in some
way. Napoleon had black generals in his army. I am always looking for ways to shake things up for myself. I have had the opportunity to play a number of virtuous, good men in my career, and I was kind of fascinated by this character who is so obsessed in his pursuit of another human being.” As for playing the pursued, West reflects, “Victor Hugo said this story will have meaning so long as there is poverty. He probably didn’t think that 150 years later, there would be so much ... but the gap between rich and poor, which was so obvious then and led to the French Revolution, is now much bigger. Therefore, poverty is still very prevalent. And the idea of centering on the weak, the dispossessed,
and writing a novel about the people who are not the strong leaders or the fortunate is still quite revolutionary.” Among the other acted versions “Les Miserables” has yielded are a longcelebrated stage musical and a 2012 movie that earned Anne Hathaway an Oscar as Fantine. “No matter what generation you are, there’s something about it that you can connect to,” reasons current co-star Collins (a daughter of music’s Phil Collins). “There were certain things about Fantine that I thought were very modern, but also, there were things of a time gone by that were romanticized. And the way that Andrew adapted it, it just felt so real.”

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

John Goodman’s Top 10 BYMovies Aliens besiege a ‘Captive State’ JAY BOBBIN BY JAY BOBBIN
“10 Cloverfield Lane” (2016): Goodman’s presence is essential to this threecharacter melodrama, in which his character warns the others about danger outside his door. “Flight” (2012): Welcome from the second he shows up here, a take-no-prisoners Goodman is great as the gregarious supplier who keeps an addicted airline pilot (Denzel Washington) “connected.” “Monsters Inc.” (2001): In one of the numerous voiceover jobs he’s had (including the current “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”), Goodman greatly enhances this animated Disney-Pixar comedy-fantasy with his vocal contribution as a supposed monster named Sulley. “Coyote Ugly” (2000): As the father of Piper Perabo’s character, Goodman gives much of the heart to this tale of a lively, female-run nightclub and bar. “The Big Lebowski” (1998): Just about anyone connected to this cult classic from the Coen brothers is iconic for their work here, including Goodman as an unpredictable comrade of “The Dude” (Jeff Bridges). “The Babe” (1992): Goodman does a credible job, warts and all, in filling the shoes and uniform of baseball icon George Herman “Babe” Ruth. “Barton Fink” (1991): Joel and Ethan Coen gave Goodman another great role as an insurance salesman trying to help his title neighbor (John Turturro) get past a case of writer’s block. “Arachnophobia” (1990): Showing how well he fares in bringing supposedly fantastic characters down to Earth, Goodman is first-rate as an ultra-exterminator battling deadly spiders. “Sea of Love” (1989): A simply terrific Goodman makes his mark as Al Pacino’s policedetective cohort ... and his all-in, a cappella rendition of the title song is a showstopper. “Raising Arizona” (1987): Goodman’s association with the Coens began with his supporting role in this dark comedy about a couple (Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter) who decide to become parents in a less-than-legal way.
At first glance, “Captive State” might seem like “Independence Day” meets “Red Dawn” meets any number of other alien-invasion or enemy-occupation movies. It certainly is that, to a large degree – but thanks to clever writing and directing and smart casting, it also is more than that, a story that plays effectively (if calculatingly) into the paranoia of our times. It poses the eternal debate over where someone’s loyalties lie, which might seem to have an easy answer when it comes to fighting aliens, but it’s more complex than that here. The focus of “Captive State” is on an area of Chicago that has been overtaken by said extraterrestrials. Many residents accept their apparent fate to be under alien rule, but bands of freedom fighters arise to challenge the oppressors – and to prompt law enforcers to try to contain them, so as to limit the potential mayhem. And thus arises the big questions the movie asks: Do you simply remain complacent under such repression? And if not, what exactly can you do about it? Though we do get to see the monsters in “Captive State,” director and co-writer Rupert Wyatt wisely keeps the emphasis on the human element, and what certain individuals choose or do what they feel they must. There’s a “Cloverfield” feel to the result, helped by the presence of “10 Cloverfield Lane” star John Goodman. Vera Farmiga and Ashton Sanders (“Moonlight”) also have prominent roles, and they bring an ordinary-person quality that helps the picture attain what it aims to. The “Cloverfield” parallel extends even farther in the case of “Captive State,” which also reaches past its presumed boundaries. In that way, it follows in a great tradition of stories of people who rise up against those who would keep them down. The aforementioned “Independence Day” is another clear example of transferring the theme to the sci-fi realm, but the cerebral aspect runs deeper in this case. Indeed, some viewers may be disappointed that “Captive State” doesn’t have more of the basic “Let’s blow up the creatures!” approach that its ads promise. However, because of the path it takes, its reputation may well grow over time as a thoughtful portrait of just how much the John Goodman and human spirit can achieve under major Ashton Sanders duress. “GLASS” Since “The Sixth Sense,” filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan’s career has been hit-or-miss, but two of his bigger successes were “Unbreakable” and “Split.” He merges characters and situations from those movies in the effective melodrama, a sizable hit named for the character Samuel L. Jackson played in “Unbreakable.” Jackson turns up again here, as does that film’s Bruce Willis, whose alter ego is a self-styled, special-powered vigilante on the trail of the multiple-personality villain played by James McAvoy in “Split.” McAvoy also reprises his role here, and it’s only a matter of time before all of those figures converge – with Sarah Paulson in another American horror story as a psychiatrist who assesses all of them. It helps to have seen the earlier films to get the most out of this one, but it’s not an absolute requirement; Anya Taylor-Joy also returns from “Split.” DVD extras: DVD extras: deleted scenes; alternate opening; “A Conversation with James McAvoy and M. A prison break that inspired an earlier cable movie also was the source of this Showtime series, which sparked much related conversation during its run. Executive-produced and directed by Ben Stiller, the drama recalls the mid-2015 upstate New York flight by convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat (played by Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro and Paul Dano). They had a surprising conspirator in their getaway: Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell, a married prison employee who was involved with both men – and is portrayed by fellow Oscar recipient Patricia Arquette, who has reaped other rewards for her work here, including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Bonnie Hunt, Eric Lange and David Morse also appear in the saga, which was filmed largely at the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility and other locations where the actual events unfolded. ›››› (Not rated: AS, N, P, V)

Keanu Reeves certainly has kept himself in the movie game, especially since redefining himself as an action star. He achieves that again in this sci-fi tale as a scientist who has found a way to transfer deceased people’s minds into clones of them. The doctor’s efforts become even more driven after a car accident claims his wife (Alice Eve) and three children (Emjay Anthony, Emily Alyn Lind, Aria Lyric Leabu), but there’s a big decision he has to make: He can only preserve three of the four. Even if the result doesn’t hold up all the way to the finish line, the film still gives Reeves the means to portray real agony, and it’s much to his credit that he sells it. Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”) and John Ortiz (“Bumblebee”) also are featured. “THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING” The legend of King Arthur’s sword Excalibur gets new twists in this fantasy-adventure principally aimed – as the title suggests – at a younger audience. The modern child of the film’s title (played by Louis Ashbourne Serkis, the son of performance-capture-specialist actor Andy Serkis) runs across the weapon and suddenly encounters such fabled figures as wizard Merlin (a role shared here by Angus Imrie and Patrick Stewart) and sorceress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson). The situation also becomes a very personal matter for the boy as he learns a lot about his own family history. Director Joe Cornish, a veteran of British comedy, also wrote the script. Ralph Macchio plays Daniel, the earnest young underdog who finds enemies in a group of school bullies led by Johnny (William Zabka), a love interest in appealing Ali (Elisabeth Shue), and a martial-arts mentor in wise and loyal Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita). The Daniel and Johnny characters have continued lately in the streaming series “Cobra Kai,” and Macchio and Zabka participate – along with co-star Martin Kove, whose Kreese also has appeared in that sequel show – in a new retrospective documentary here. ››› (PG: P, V)

Gibson again portrays a former pop-music star turned teacher who has to make big decisions as both her wedding to the school’s guidance counselor (fellow returnee Robert Gant) and the 20th anniversary of the song that made her a celebrity approach. The tune in question happens to be “Out of the Blue,” which was one of the biggest hits Gibson had herself; Pascale Hutton also is back in the cast, playing Gibson’s sister. ››› (Not rated)
