n 2010, Randy and Linda Stokes’ niece decided she wanted to have her wedding on the front lawn outside her aunt and uncle’s white, two-story, scenic, small plantation-style home on S.C. 76, just outside the city limits of Sumter. The Stokes’ Southern-style 386acre farm includes their home and two adjacent houses, which are about a halfmile off the road. An upscale pool area, complete with a small poolhouse, sits in the backyard and served as the reception area for the wedding. Behind the pool area is a 2.5-acre pond. Linda Stokes said attendees at the family wedding told her she and her husband should turn their property into a venue. At the time that wasn’t feasible, Stokes said, since her parents, Bobby and Sudean Hanna, lived in one of the adjacent houses. Another friend had her wedding on the property a few years later, and it also
went well, Stokes said. After both her parents were deceased with her mom’s passing in 2015, Stokes said she decided to work on the open house by transforming one large bedroom into a bridal room and see about turning the property into a venue in 2016. Last year, she got permitted to host events for the public and officially named the farm “LinRan” Farm (short for “Linda” and “Randy”). Weddings and wedding receptions have been the most popular events held at LinRan to date: eight weddings last year, and at least 10 are already on the books for this year, Stokes said. The couple said they are also open to hosting other events at their farm, such as rehearsal dinners, family reunions, corporate or social events and other special occasions. With its various amenities and scenic backcountry views, they say LinRan can accommodate every type of gathering – from a country-style pig-pickin’ to a

formal wedding reception. Stokes said the venue can accommodate 250 to 300 people, and for events she can provide up to 200 chairs and 18 tables, which include an assortment of round, rectangle and cocktail tables. As far as wedding events, Linda said she charges the same flat rate to families whether they hold one event at LinRan or all three – rehearsal dinner, wedding and reception. That rate is $250 to hold a date and $2,000 payable one month prior to the event. “I think it's the best rate for a venue around,” Stokes said. Stokes is quick to point out, though, when a bride-to-be comes out to visit LinRan, she doesn’t deliver a fancy salespitch or try to recommend it. “I just say, ‘It’s your day. I want you to be happy. It’s your decision,’” Stokes said. “And I just give them my information. And if they decide to use us, we’re tickled to death and we’ll try to help them.”

Growing local Sumter farmers market organizers bring bigger, more visible summer event in second year

esidents of and visitors to Sumter on Friday afternoons now have another opportunity to pick up fresh, local produce and meat from the region's farmers and browse a wide variety of arts and crafts, baked goods, live plants and cut flowers at a new farmers market on the USC Sumter campus. The new market, which happens from 1-6 p.m. on Fridays through the end of November, was organized by two local farmers, Marie Dorr of Dorr Farms in Gable and Russell Singleton of Sunny Cedars Farm off Lewis Road. For a time, Dorr was the only vendor remaining at the old farmers market at the Sumter County Fairgrounds Ag Building, and Singleton, who regularly travels to a Saturday morning market in Summerville, wanted a chance to market Sunny Cedars Farm's

"Chris is an alum of USC, and he went to Dean (Michael) Sontagg and said, 'All the other USCs have farmers markets. Would you like to host one?' And he said, 'Yes, that'd be a great idea.'" At first, the market was held under the live oaks deeper on campus, but visibility was low so Singleton suggested putting it up front. "We started in October of last year and did kind of a partial season to cut our teeth and get started," Singleton said. "It was Boss Farms, Sunny Cedars, Prevost, Dorr and First Fruits – we had about eight regular vendors that came, and now we have more than 20. So, it's growing.

"Mary Marshall, who does Cooking with Mary & Friends, is a food blogger from Wedgefield. She's our publicist, and she's the biggest promoter of Sumter's local food scene – has about 40,000 followers – and is a retired publicist from Shaw, so she knows what she's doing. She's not paid, but we throw her a pack of sausages every now and then, and she's happy." Singleton said he and his wife, Lisa, organize the arrangement of vendors each week and are on site earlier than some of the produce vendors who harvest in the morning. The pair is working to grow the new market so they can sell their pork products locally while taking advantage of bigger markets on Saturday mornings. "We tried the downtown farmers market for a while but just didn't see the traffic, and so we went to Summerville,
North Myrtle Beach and all over and had to leave Sumter behind," Singleton said. "When this opportunity came along, Marie called and asked if we'd be interested
and we said, 'Sure!' And because I'm 60 years old, people look at me and say, 'Mr. Russell, where do you want me?' That's how I kind of naturally fell into it. Anoth-
er thing is that she's one of the last ones to get here because she's picking strawberries right up to market time, whereas mine's frozen and I can load up the night before. So, we have a good working relationship. Lisa and I are taking a big interest in this market because we want to be in Sumter. So, we come out and lay it out, and it works very well." Singleton said it's a deal that's hard to beat for a farmer or artisan for whom a permanent presence is not economically feasible. "For $10 a week, a farmer can't go downtown and rent a storefront or have a brick-and-mortar building, but you can come here and see a lot of people and foot traffic," he said. "It's better than sitting alongside a road in this part of the county or that part waiting. We're on the western side of town, and that's where the most people live.

"In June, July and August, attendance usually slows down because we're in the South, and it's hot and humid and people don't want to get outside," Singleton said. "But the vendors won't slow down. We'll tough it out – we've got our cold towels, and we'll keep ourselves hydrated, and we'll be here. It's a lot easier than growing what we grow. We'll grow it for you and do the hard work, and you come and support us."

Annual "poker" run invites boaters, motorists, drivers to fundraising event for Clarendon County veterans By Kayla Robins
B
oaters, motorcyclists and drivers alike can all join together in August to help veterans and their families by visiting different marinas. The Manning Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America’s (VVA) eighth annual benefit “poker” run will cast off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Lakevue Landing in Manning on Lake Marion. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Robbie Hodge Memorial College Scholarship and the Fallen Comrade Members Memorial College Scholarship and will help the group provide assistance to veterans in Clarendon County. VeLinda Reynolds, a committee member for the local VVA chapter, said the VVA helps veterans with rides to doctor appointments, electrical problems and anything else they may need. There is also a program set up that assists families with sick veterans with funeral bills and other private medical issues, and the members of that program are kept confidential. There will be six stops on the run, which are: Meare's Marine (formerly J&J); Taw Caw Campground and Marina; Goat Island Bait and Tackle Restaurant and Lounge, Polly's Landing Marina; Randolph's Landing; and the ending point at Lakevue Landing. She said the event is a fun time for all, a good way to get out on the lake and a great way to help veterans in Clarendon County. She said the group helps all veterans, not just those from the Vietnam War. According to the chapter, there are 2,500 veterans in Clarendon County, 48 of whom are veterans of the Vietnam War.
The scholarships are awarded to students at Laurence Manning Academy and Manning High School. Participants must get stamps from all six stops to be eligible for cash prizes, door prizes and dinner beginning at 4 p.m. at Lakevue. Reynolds said there is no gambling for the event. Instead, runners hand in their stamps for numbered chip they randomly select from a bag. The numbers on the chips are added up, with the highest combination winning. First-third place will win cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50, respectively. Entry forms may be obtained at any of the six stops in advance or from any chapter member, she said. Entry is $10 for all participants.

The result was a reliable area of high waters ideal for paddlers, as well as a variety of wildlife, creating for a picturesque canoeing and boating trip. The Palmetto Trail also passes through this area, making the spot convenient for hikers.

Using stripers for tourism New law on catches is a compromise between DNR and lake fishing guides

I
t wasn’t a legislative bill that caught a lot of headlines, but one area lawmaker and a pair of local commercial fisherman think the new law that reduces catch limits on striped bass in the region’s lakes will help tourism. For about the last decade, recreational anglers and your regular weekend fisherman could only keep big stripers (26 inches or longer) with a bag limit of three when fishing in Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie in the Santee-Cooper River system. The idea was to preserve the smaller fish and bring back the fish population over time. Many think that time has come, but an adjustment and compromise needed to be reached among state lawmakers, the state Department of Natural Resources and lake fishing guides, who typically make a living taking people out and helping them fish at their properties. Brothers Andy and Stevie Pack are two such area fishing guides who own and operate Pack’s Landing in Pinewood, right on the county line between Sumter and Clarendon counties. 28 JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2018 | LAKESIDE
The new law, passed in May in the General Assembly, keeps the bag limit of three stripers per person, but lowers the catch limit to three in the range (or slot) of 23 to 25 inches, or two stripers in that slot and one 26 inches or longer. Andy Pack said he is pleased with the new law and thinks it will help business at the landing on Lake Marion. “There were times the last few years where people could catch 20 fish out here and not have a single one they could take home,” Pack said. “It was catching fish and people enjoy that, but they do want to take home some.” Jim Whitaker, who works for the Packs at the landing, agreed the new law will help people take more fish home or decrease the time it takes to catch their limit as opposed to the old law. The Packs also said they think the new rules might help them get some clients back that moved on to fish at other lakes in the Midlands. State Sen. Thomas McElveen, D-Sumter, said he was a big propo-

By changing the size limit downward but allowing fishermen to still potentially keep one big fish, or “trophy fish” over 26 inches, visitors can now keep smaller fish. Also, now DNR can protect more of the bigger fish that are spawning and reproducing, as opposed to the old law. Shortly after the new law came into effect in May, Bill and Ivy Trado of Kingstree fished at Pack’s Landing for the first time. The Trados said they went out with Andy as their guide about 6:30 a.m. and had taken in their three stripers apiece before 9 a.m. The couple said that gave them time to take in the all the scenery and wildlife by sightseeing on the lake. Those scenic views include numerous kinds of trees, birds – such as blue heron and ospreys – alligators, beavers, otters and other animals. “That’s a big part of our selling point,” Stevie Pack said. “You can catch a few fish, but if we can get you out there and show you cypress
trees, ospreys, alligators bellowing – you can’t beat that. It’s really special.” The new law also extends the striper catching season on Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie from Oct. 1 to June 15 instead of June 1. The Packs said during their peak season for bass fishing in the spring months, the new catch limits will help various aspects of the business. “During our busy months, it will help a lot,” Andy Pack said. “It will increase demand for bait and help in a lot of ways with people using the area.” McElveen said he’s glad a compromise was finally reached. “It’s an important part of tourism, and we want folks to have the opportunity to come and catch a nice fish,” McElveen said. “But, we also want to ensure we are managing the fishery in a way where our children and grandchildren will have the chance to do the same thing.” JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2018 29

You don’t get attention by doing what everyone else is doing.
I
felt wary at first of talking too much about Pearl Fryar’s age. I’m not sure I’d like it if our positions were switched, but, then again, I’m the one who has so much to learn. The more I thought about it, and the more advice the famous topiary artist gave – wellpackaged and well-delivered in a way only a well-practiced person could articulate – I began to feel (hope) he would acknowledge that was how I had to tell his story. I had to tell his story that way because there is no denying he is in a different stage of his life than in 2010 when he starred in a John Deere commercial. Or in 2006 when the award-winning documentary “A Man Named Pearl” was released in theaters. He is in a different stage of

his life than when he retired after 36 years from a manufacturing job at the local Coca-Cola bottling plant. In a different stage from when that job brought him one state south of his hometown in North Carolina and from living in New York and after serving in the U.S. Army. There’s no doubt now he has the Yard of the Month. That couldn’t have been said when he bought a corn field in Bishopville in the late '70s and vowed to win the coveted award. His best-yard reign cannot be credited to his three-minute lesson from a nursery owner in Camden on topiary – the art of cutting trees and shrubs into shapes. It was the first two parts of his three-part motto. Work. Passion.

“I got in a lot of trouble as a kid because I was always cutting things up and shaping them,” he said. He went to college and “did it by the books,” but he is quick to say education doesn’t give you talent, and education in itself won’t make you a millionaire. Wanting to be a millionaire often won’t make you a millionaire. It’s having a talent, realizing that talent, working hard at pursuing your passion, and using education to get you a comfortable living to allow for a hobby. At least that’s how he did it. Then comes the third part.

y husband, David, likes to say that during a sweltering South Carolina summer, just trying to breathe outdoors is like drinking soup through your nose because of the humidity. Kick the humidity to the backseat this summer with a favorite treat — homemade ice cream. Pack a small cooler with what you need for you and the kids, significant other or friends to make your own ice cream at the lake, park, beach or wherever your flip-flops take you. It’ll make better memories than going to the local Dairy Queen again. Use this easy recipe from www.kids-cooking-activities.com, and add your favorite mixins or toppings right into the bag when the ice cream is finished. David, who taught physics for a few years in Sumter, said he used a similar recipe in class to teach about chemical reactions. He said the

rock salt helps the water that melts from the ice in the bag stay below freezing even though it's liquid. He suggests keeping the ice cream bag in contact with the water that will be at the bottom of the bag rather than just in the ice. This very cold water helps your ice cream mixture freeze faster. His one warning was that of course the ice cream bag will be very salty on the outside when it's done. I ended up finding a piece of salt in my dessert, so be careful to seal everything well and to open the bag so that no salt falls in.
Vanilla ice cream recipe
½ cup half and half, milk or cream 1 tablespoon sugar ¼ teaspoon vanilla
1 sandwich-size Ziploc bag
1 gallon-size Ziploc bag 3 cups ice
½ cup rock salt Add cream, sugar and vanilla into small baggie and zip closed. In larger bag, add ice and rock salt. Place smaller filled bag inside larger rock salt/ice bag. Seal bag closed. Double check to make sure both are sealed tight. Squeeze, toss, wiggle or play catch with the bag until mixture thickens, about 10-15 minutes. Add your toppings and eat with a spoon right from the bag. For chocolate flavor, add ¼ teaspoon cocoa powder or 1 tablespoon chocolate drink mix powder. For a malted milk flavor, add 1 tablespoon malted milk powder. After ice cream is ready, throw in any toppings you want, like choclate candies, sour gummies, fresh fruit, sprinkles or fudge sauce.
