Inside this issue is also the official guide for the Striped Bass Festival and Puddin’ Swamp Festival in Manning and Turbeville. This is the 40th anniversary year for the Striped Bass Festival, and there’s a weekend full of fun and fishing fit for newcomers and lifers alike. I want to give a special thanks to the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce for trusting us with producing the festival guides for them this year. We loved learning a little more about the history of the Striped Bass Festival and where the puddin’ in Puddin Swamp came from, and we’re ready to get out there for the weekend. So, get your calendar out. Get your parade chairs, your picnic blankets, your Derby hats and, hopefully, your sunglasses. It’s festival season!

I
t’s festival season! That time of the year when your teeth stop chattering, the lawn chairs come out and turkey hunting is on the weekend to-do list. I’m ready for it. Are you? I’ve heard people say this rural area of South Carolina doesn’t have enough to do. Clearly, they need to skim through the pages of this Lakeside. There are so many outdoor activities and family friendly festivals coming up in the next couple months, it would be a feat to get to them all. Don’t worry, I plan to try. When I first moved to this area a year and a half ago, these events were a way to get to know the people and places I now call neighbors and home. Now, they’re a way to find myself back outside after winter hibernation and continue to explore my surroundings. There really is something for anyone. Don’t have a family to take to amusement rides? Check out the Puddin' Swamp Festival. Like beer? Head to Sumter for the Microbrew Festival and taste craft brews while supporting Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors. Love art? Head to Lake City for the Southeastern-famous ArtFields.

EXTRAS The Mighty Kicks! performing free 7 p.m. Friday, April 26 in downtown Manning Demand for the Mighty Kicks! is at an all-time high, with functions booked more than a year in advance. The band’s client list is certainly impressive. President Obama’s and Gov. Nikki Haley’s Inaugural Balls. The Mighty Kicks! had the honor of performing at the U.S. embassy in Canada. Flown to perform for wedding receptions in Chicago, New York City and Maine. HBO hired The Kicks! to perform for the “Vice Principal” series’ prom scene starring Danny McBride and Walton Goggins. The Kicks! nonstop energy

The history of the band The Mighty Kicks! began in 1986 when a group of friends from Orangeburg started an air band, the rage at the time, and proceeded to win contests across the region. Striped Bass Festival Pageant Saturday, March 30 Weldon Auditorium The Miss Striped Bass Festival Pageant, a project of the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, is one of the landmark events of the Striped Bass Festival each year. Competition will begin at 5 p.m. Two groups will compete and then will be crowned. There will be two runners-up in each group with more than five contestants. If there are less than five, there will be a first runnerup and winner. In a group of 15 or more, there will be seven semi-finalists. elcome to Turbeville! No one knows for sure where the “puddin’” in Puddin’ Swamp came from, even those who have lived in Turbeville their whole lives. There are a few more popular legends and one published account, so most just go with one of those. The most likely myth has to do with Francis Marion. The American Revolutionary War officer camped in the Turbeville area, and someone in that camp really liked bread pudding. That’s the fact. Where it gets a little swampy is who it was. The other one “everybody goes with,” according to Jenna Windham, festival committee chair for the 12th-annual Puddin’ Swamp Festival, presented by Citizen’s Bank, in Turbeville on April 1113, is that the swamp separated two friends’ properties, and when one woman went to bring her friend some pudding, it fell into the water. Yet another story passed down involves an old man who used what was leftover from hunting

hogs to make blood pudding. However the swamp got its name, it seemed the obvious choice for the name when a group of community leaders gathered in 2007 to create a festival celebrating the town. The theme for this year’s festival, commemorated each year in the official T-shirt, features Beau, a dog who is seen on the shirt holding a Puddin’ Swamp Festival hat in his mouth. Windham said they’ve used a host of animals through the years, from swamp dogs to opossums to turtles. Anything to remind attendees of the rural outdoors surrounding Turbeville. Well over 3,000 people come out to the festival on the Super Saturday of each year, she said. The three-day family friendly event kicks off with the Taste of Puddin’ Swamp and the beginning of amusement rides on Thursday. Friday features amusement rides, food
vendors and Jim Quick and Coastline performing on the mainstage. That all leads up to Super Saturday, where there will be rides, food, dance troupes performing, local singers, hula hooping, a casting contest, music, craft vendors, fireworks and a first-ever motorcycle show. The bike show will be in memory of Ray Morris. The day will start off with the Puddin’ Swamp 5K benefitting EC Academics. Carolina Cruisin’ DJ’s will get on the stage immediately following the Miss Swamp Bottom Beauty Contest, an annual benefit for the Shriner’s. Windham said she loves seeing people happy and enjoying their time at the festival. She said people come from all over the state for the event. Families have scheduled reunions for that weekend. One year, a couple from Illinois in town for their wedding stopped by, the bride still in her wedding dress. “There’s so much going on,” Windham said, “you can’t go through Turbeville and not see it.”

All about the art
S
ince its official launch in 2013, ArtFields has attracted more and more visitors each spring to the nine-day art event in tiny Lake City, South Carolina. The number of artists entering the competition has grown, too, as they vie to become one of 400 accepted from 12 southeastern states. More than $140,000 is awarded each year – including $50,000 for the winner, $25,000 for second place, $12,500 for People’s Choice and $2,000 for the artwork judged best from each of the 12 states. While the large prizes attract many talented artists, ArtFields’ staff and volunteers said the event is also important to visitors and to the town of Lake City, just 35 miles east of Sumter. Once a leader in agriculture, particularly beans and strawberries at different times in its history, Lake City is now celebrated for 14 APRIL - MAY 2019 | LAKESIDE
initiating the art festival and growing it. Community members are active participants, with more than 50 nonprofits, businesses, industries, restaurants and other venues exhibiting some of the 400 entries throughout the April 26-May 4 festival. Other exhibition venues include renovated 1920s warehouses and professional art spaces such as Jones-Carter Gallery and TRAX Visual Art Center to the library, the history museum and the Ronald E. McNair Life History Center. Shuttles are available for those who can’t easily walk around town. Roberta Burns, a staff member, said each spring offers “400 new pieces of art, and this year we’ve got two new murals and three bands on stage in addition to several street performers playing live music.” Art goes on display the first day, and additional activities include
art walks and wine walks at the famous Moore Botanical Gardens. There, too, visitors can learn the art of bonsai and make their own, learn “the art of gardening,” make leaf castings and more. Most activities are free, but several are ticketed events. The Makers Market offers the opportunity to talk to the “makers,” see and purchase the artists’ creations. There’s a large food court on the village green, and Rhythm Nation, Infinity Show Band and the Harlem Gospel Choir will perform there, as well. ArtFields’ staff also recognizes and nurtures the creativity of young people with ArtFields Jr. The program offers them the opportunity to immerse themselves in art, “doing things they’ve often never done before, like see live artistic performances and art exhibitions, spend time talking with ‘real’ artists and learn

and deepen their skills with studio art instruction.” Several young artists from Sumter and Clarendon counties have been accepted into the ArtFields Jr. program. They include Ella Marian Askins and Ruby Dozier of Manning; Preston Hammett of New Zion; Carolina Hoppmann of Dalzell; and Sumter’s Catherine Bush, Lauren Champion, Chandler Patrick, Ingrid Singleton, Kaitlyn Smith, Maggie Solberg, Mary Margaret Terry and Alexandria Trapp. Sumter Artists Guild member Thomas Alexander Blackmon of Manning, who works primarily in pyrography, was accepted into the main ArtFields exhibition and competition. While the monetary prizes are important to artists, Vicki Hagner, who won the People’s
Choice Award in 2018, said at the time that the win meant more than that. She commented at the time, "It is a validation of my passion for this unique art technique (3D, mosaic), and I was so touched that people saw its beauty." “Art creates a powerful dialogue and provokes the viewer to ponder its message,” Hagner said at a later date, echoing the sentiment of ArtFields coordinators. What started with the simple goal of honoring the artists of the Southeast – a concept initiated by businesswoman, entrepreneur and Lake City native Darla Moore – has grown into one of the largest and most celebrated living art exhibitions in the country. ArtFields will begin Friday, April 26 and run through May 4. Admission to art venues and most activities is free.

If you like craft beer and snacks, the annual Senior Services fundraiser is right up your alley. Head to downtown Sumter for sips and tastes while your ticket proceeds help provide hot meals delivered to homebound seniors. 16 APRIL - MAY 2019 | LAKESIDE
Have you ever wished you could go back in time? Well, now you can. Sort of. Sumter Senior Services will be hosting the Downtown Sumter Mircobrew Festival on Friday, May 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. with a “Hippie Fest” theme. Patrons are encouraged to don their best hippie outfits. “It’s the 50th anniversary of Woodstock,” Downtown Sumter Development Coordinator Leigh Newman said. “It’s a tribute to hippies and Woodstock. We’ll have a Beatles cover band.” There will be two dozen different beers for patrons to try at the event. “Yahnis from Florence provides the beers,” Newman said. “We’ll have craft and microbrews from smaller breweries so people can taste beers they’re not aware of.” All the money made at the event will benefit Meals on Wheels, a program provided by Senior Services that delivers hot meals to homebound seniors.
“That’s the main focus of our services,” said Rebecca Sears, of Sumter Senior Services. “I think (we provide) 1,500 meals a week.” Along with Sumter Senior Services, other locations in the area that work with Meals on Wheels include Delaine in Wedgefield and St. John’s Center in Shiloh. Like the Microbrew Festival’s sister event, Sip ‘n’ Stroll, or Sip ‘n’ Scream, as it was dubbed this year for Halloween, which is a wine tasting event, uses a plethora of locations in Downtown Sumter to accommodate patrons. Sumter Senior Services would like to have between 10 and 12 locations participating. Last year’s locations included the Tavern on Main, Law Range, Berenyi, Naomi and Warner/19 Candles, Thompson, the Board of Realtors, F45 Training Studio, Jersey Joes and James Formal Wear. “That’s a good amount of tasting locations for beers,” Sears said. These businesses include locations
downtown and on Main and Liberty streets. “We have 85 to 90 percent repeat merchants,” Sears said. Along with tasting glasses, the event will provide “swag bags” to patrons. “Their logos can be seen, so that’s always a plus,” Sears said. “We give them out to everybody who attends the event.” Newman said there will also be light hors d’oeuvres at tasting locations. “Make sure to get tickets in advance,” Sears said. “There will be no online orders the day of the event. You’ll have to buy them at the door.” The event will be rain or shine.

Sumter Iris Festival
The longest continuously running festival in the Southeast is found each spring in Sumter. One of the Southeastern Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events, it offers picturesque scenes, entertainment, arts, crafts and food. Just be sure to get there early if you want to buy one of the garden’s world-famous irises. BY BRUCE MILLS Sumter’s Swan Lake-Iris Gardens has grown into what’s known as a showplace of flowers and the home of all eight species of swan. It’s also home to the longest continuously running festival in the Southeast with Sumter’s Iris Festival. Since 1940, visitors from across the U.S. and many other countries have traveled to the Gamecock City for the festival to see – and buy – the thousands of Japanese irises growing along the banks of the lake and to participate in the wide variety of festival events. This year’s festival will be held in the gardens during Memorial Day weekend – Friday, May 24, through Sunday, May 26 – for the 79th year, according to Lynn Kennedy, chairwoman of the Iris Festival

Committee and events planner for the City of Sumter. The festival begins on the evening of Thursday, May 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., Kennedy said, with the official opening ceremony and the crowning of King and Queen Iris. Then it’s on to the Garden Street side of the lake for the popular Taste at the Gardens, a tasting of food from local chefs, caterers and restaurants accompanied by music from local band Elijah Bradford and The Valentinos. Kennedy said the band performed earlier this year at The Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Retreat in Hilton Head and is very entertaining. Friday through Sunday, the festival will be packed with activities and sights to suit every age range, from children to seniors, she said.
While most events will interest all festival goers, there is an amusement area and Children’s Art in the Park for younger visitors. The kids’ area will also feature a mechanical ride, a rock wall and bungee jumps this year. Additionally, there will be a flower show in the Alice Boyle Garden Center and gardening ideas and materials for plant lovers in the Bland Gardens – on the gazebo side of the gardens. Gardeners will again be able to purchase a wide variety of plants. Kennedy said each year the festival tries to highlight a local artist. This year, it will be Michael Duffy of Sumter. Duffy specializes in sculptures, and his work will be featured each day in the Bland Gardens. Saturday brings the Shrine Day Iris Festival Parade with many units, including bands, clowns and a float carrying the festival’s Kings and Queens. Prisma Health Tuomey Community Health Initiatives will also provide free screenings for adults. An extensive food court and the Marketplace – both in the Heath Gardens on the south side – will be open all three days, offering a diverse selection of food, arts and crafts. According to Kennedy, each year the festival features about 125 or more vendors. Several new vendors have applied to the festival this year, and Kennedy said she expects there will be new artwork for attendees to take in. Festival-goers can also enjoy free pontoon boat rides – the Iris Festival is the only time they’re available – to get a swan’s-eye view of the lake and gardens. Again this year, the Iris Festival will have two car

shows – one Saturday and another on Sunday. Throughout the festival, a variety of entertainment will be presented on several stages. Kennedy said if there is good weather, the festival can average anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 attendees. Admission is free. There is a $5 donation for admission to the Taste at the Gardens for people 13 and older and a charge by individual vendors for food tastings and art purchases. Kennedy said she encourages anyone and
everyone to come out for a great show. “We hope everybody comes out,” Kennedy said, “and we’re praying for good weather and a lot of blooms.” She said she also wanted to thank the festival’s sponsors for their support. “Without our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to offer all these things for free,” Kennedy said. “It’s very rare to go to a festival that the kids’ area is free. You normally pay. Because of the response from the community and the sponsorships, we are able to offer free entertainment to all those who attend.”

Trey and Whitney Phillips are trying to bring one of Clarendon County’s bestkept secrets back to the forefront of our minds. Full of history detailed in logbooks and memorabilia left behind by owners past, the Clarendon Club has seen the likes of Hugh Hefner and used to be the go-to site for Beechcraft owners to make business deals. The couple is hoping renovations will bring people back to the time capsule disguised as a hunting club.
F
rom the tranquil shores of Lake Marion to the natural forests of Turbeville, Clarendon County is steeped in history. Gen. Francis Marion earned his moniker “The Swamp Fox” from his maneuvers eluding British soldiers in the county’s numerous swamps. Cemeteries and antebellum homes were flooded during the early 1940s to make way for the largest manmade lake in the nation, Lake Marion. In the mid-1950s, the Pearson, Briggs and DeLaine families asked for gas for a school bus to take their children to school. That request fueled what was to become the Briggs v. Elliot lawsuit and eventually the renowned Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, lawsuit that outlawed segregation. Today, a little-known county treasure can be found down a little dirt road, nestled beside Lake Marion in the North Santee area of the county. The decades-old pristine hunting club is home to an abundance of wildlife including quail and deer. Fishermen have less than a mile to travel on land to reach Lake Marion’s shores and enjoy dropping a line or reeling in a striped bass, largeor smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegills, warmouth, catfish and more. Located at 1219 Dingle Pond Road in Summerton, the Clarendon Club was founded around 1930 on Pine Island or what the locals referred to as the “Sawdust Pile.” Trey and Whitney Phillips are the new owners of the Clarendon Club. The couple – he’s a pharmacist, she’s a nurse – purchased the property a little over a year ago and decided to bring it back to life. While the couple has made improvements to the club in the past 12-plus months, Whitney said they’re keeping a lot of the club’s history and nostalgia. “We think it’s important to show its history,” she said. “We’re preserving memorabilia from over the
BY SHARRON HALEY years and showcasing it in some of the cabins.” Whitney said J.G. Adams and W.P. Herbert were two of the club’s founding members, information they gathered from the club’s almost 90-year-old logbooks. The pair was almost always present when the club was being used. Adams and Herbert along with other club members assisted members and visitors on quail hunts, the primary focus of the club at that time. The club also offered deer hunting and fishing trips. “We love the outdoors,” Whitney said. “We’re in a great area where there is so much to do recreationally either at the lake, in the woods or on the golf courses.” According to the couple, the Clarendon Club has undergone several changes in the course of its existence. In 1942, the club was reorganized because a lot of its land was flooded to make room for Lake Marion. Ralph Cuthbertson and his family purchased six acres of the property, including the property where the current lodge sits. A large parcel of land used by the club was purchased or leased from the International Paper Company that owned a lot of the timberland in the area surrounding the club. The Cuthbertson family managed the club and held the hunts over the next several decades. Sometime later, club’s original building burned and had to be rebuilt. Chris Carson, a family friend of the Cuthbertsons, purchased the club and its property from the family. In the October 2017, the Phillips made an offer on the club and its property and, three months later, closed on the deal. Since January 2018, Trey and Whitney have been breathing new life into the club through renovations and additions. “As we’ve been cleaning and renovating, we’ve found some wonderful mementos,” Whitney said.

“Why was there a Vidalia onion bag in a crate? We found out that the people who owned the huge Vidalia onion facility were bigtime members of the club.” In the early 1970s, the 3M Company visited the club frequently to hold company meetings and employee family events. Much of the club’s history has been garnered from the club’s brittle logbooks. “They show the history of the club,” Whitney said. “The club had some famous visitors including celebrities and politicians. Hugh Hefner was here and left one of his cups behind.” While browsing through decades of logbooks, paperwork and documents, the couple kept running across airplane memorabilia. They learned that the Cuthbertsons were involved with the Beechcraft company and even had a landing strip on the property. Mrs. Cuthbertson, known as Big Gaynelle, worked at the club along with her husband, sons and daughter, who was known as Little Gaynelle. According to Whitney, documents revealed that Big and Little Gaynelle helped with entertaining while the men in the family closed the deals. Through their connection with Beechcraft, the Cuthbertson would fly in customers to demo airplanes. The Cuthbertson left a lot of memorabilia when they sold the club to Carson. “We found a box of old books, many of them early edition printings,” Whitney said. “We found Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbertson’s Bibles with notes in them.” When the Cuthbertson’s son Hugh came to pick up a few of his family’s heirlooms, he shared several stories about the club with Trey and Whitney. “He showed us the patched holes in the wall at

the lodge that resulted from some disagreements involving poker games,” Whitney said with laugh. Whitney said she found a picture of a woman in one of the rooms at the lodge and, after a few internet searches, she discovered the woman was the owner of Beechcraft. “We are continuing to put the puzzle pieces together,” she said. The couple found a picture of a dog and its paw print in one of the rooms and later found out the dog had been buried in a pet cemetery on the club’s property. “This place is like a time capsule,” she added. “We found original quills and bedding in the main cabin’s laundry room. We donated some and kept some to display.”
The desk that Whitney used in the day-to-day operations of the club is the desk that Big Gaynelle used. “Her cup holder is still there,” she shared. “Things like that I don’t want to throw away. Those are the items that add character to a place.” “He knows all about the club, but he’d forgotten about it,” she said. Today, the Clarendon Club continues to have a private membership; however, numerous events at the club are open to the public, including an upcoming Easter egg hunt. “This is a really neat place,” she said. “It’s always been a private club, and we want it to continue to cater to the members, but during the offseason for hunting, we want to hold events that are open to
the public.” In the upcoming weeks, Whitney said the club is hosting a company that will be using the club as a training facility for its members. At the end of training session, the company will be hosting a family day. The club is also opening its doors to law enforcements agencies that will be using the club’s pistol and rifle ranges for active shooter training sessions. “We want to have the club used for educational purposes when possible,” she said. “We enjoy the outdoors. We’re kid friendly. We have a lot of outdoor space, and we can book our cabins for sleeping.” The club features a main lodge along with a little lodge behind the main unit and a honeymoon

or bird’s nest cabin nearby that can sleep two. “We are renovating a small cabin that we will use as a small meeting place and where we’ll be able to display a lot of the memorabilia,” Whitney said. Whitney said that she and her husband are taking baby steps in renovations. With the club’s proximity to Interstate 95, Lake Marion and the abundance of wildlife, the Clarendon Club has something to offer to all outdoorsmen. “We want it to be like it was years ago,” she said. “It was well-known. Everyone loved it. We want people to want to come here for the hunting and fishing and for the atmosphere and history.”

Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival This family fun day highlights Mayesville’s “Mother of Education” with entertainment, history and a dose of local flavor

ayesville is a quiet, nostalgic place, a small town square surrounded by Southern estates that harken back to a different time. But, on May 18, the town square will come alive with music, carnival rides, educational opportunities, a parade and more for the 2019 Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival, a day of learning, history and festival fun in honor of the town’s most famous daughter — Mary McLeod Bethune. “We want to acquaint the future generations with the legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune,” Mayesville Mayor Jereleen Hollimon-Miller, herself a great-grandniece of Bethune, said. “We want to inspire the children to walk in her footsteps during this event through the values and causes she espoused.” Bethune was born in a log cabin near Mayesville in 1875, and worked during her childhood in the area picking cotton. She became a lifelong advocate for education, a leader of the civil and women’s rights 32 APRIL - MAY 2019 | LAKESIDE
movements, an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and a vice president of the NAACP. The festival in Mayesville began in 1998 to focus on preserving the “Mother of Education’s” legacy of learning. This year’s festival will feature an on-site DJ, carnival rides, food vendors and celebrity guests, including retired Harlem Globetrotters Bobby Hunter and Larry Rivers, NFL Legends Jamie Dukes, Flip Johnson, James Gossett, Terrence Campbell, Dexter Davis and Keith Williams, world heavyweight boxing champion James Smith and many others. The weekend will kick off with a celebrity dinner that is open to the public at Golden Corral in Sumter. The event will continue on Saturday at 7 a.m. with the In the Footsteps of Dr. Bethune Walk-A-Thon and breakfast hosted by the Lee County section of the National Council of Negro Women, followed by a parade that will be the official start of the day’s festivities. The theme for this year’s event is “Empowering Communities through Health, History, Art, STEM Education, Music and Sports,” and the organizers take this theme seriously. “We’ve made a game that will be available at the festival on tablets,” Festival Chairman Ed Miller said. “It’s just like any other video game, but it’s got an emphasis on literacy. They can get their parents involved, and churches and libraries and other institutions can even buy the software.” The software will be free and open to the public at the festival. It was created in conjunction with Flink Learning, a virtual education organization based in Massachusetts. Health education opportunities will be available
to those who come out for the festival, too. The Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF), a global nonprofit that provides information and care to individuals living with HIV, will have it Columbiabased mobile unit there, providing attendees with free screenings and health care information. “It’s so important for people to be educated about this,” AHF Columbia Pharmacy Liaison Gary Rhett said. “We want to get the word out down [in Mayesville] because people of all ages need to know about this. They need to be tested and need to know, if they do test positive, how they can receive treatment.” Truly a mix of celebration and education,
the festival will last all day on Saturday, making the town of Mayesville a community center of learning, advocacy and fun for all ages for a day. “This is about looking forward and moving forward – inspiring people to find a legacy of their own,” Hollimon-Miller said. “This is for people to take a look at the past and then see what they want to do with that moving forward. The Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Festival is free of charge, though certain concessions, games and rides will cost a small fee. Attendees are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. Each year, the three-day festival begins with the Thursday night event “An Evening of Elegance – Remembering the Past” at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 325 W. Fulton St. At the opening act, starting at 7 p.m., state Rep. David Weeks, D-Sumter, will honor select current community leaders. Next, the event moves to the church’s enrichment center for the Living Museum. Through the years, the museum has honored black leaders from the Civil Rights Movement and leading entertainers such as groundbreaking opera singer Leotyne Price, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and Patti LaBelle. On Friday, tee time for the annual golf tournament at Crystal Lakes Golf Course is slated for 7:30 a.m., and a

shotgun start for the four-man captain’s choice tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m. Organizer Patty Wilson said the sign-up deadline for the golf tournament is not until Wednesday, April 10. Cost is $50 per person with the opportunity to win cash prizes at the end and a new car from Jones Chevrolet, Wilson said. Later that night, from 6 to 9 p.m., festival-goers will hear various music from Sumter-based Terence Lonon and The Untouchables during Taste of Soul on the Avenue at South Sumter's Farmers Market grounds on Manning Avenue, next to the South Sumter Resource Center. Attendees can kick off Saturday, the biggest day of the event, with the lively Festival on the Avenue Parade, which starts at the corner of South Main and Bartlette streets and extends down Manning Avenue. The parade will feature about 100 participants from bands to dancers, king and queen floats and local elected officials. According to festival Chairwoman Lorraine Dennis, the parade’s grand marshal will be Johnny Pringle. Music, other performances and food will continue throughout the day along Manning Avenue until 4 p.m. Bands will include Sumter-based Jalisa Monique and Soul for Therapy, Woodstock and FBI, which stands for Five Brass Instrumentalists, she said. A majority of the events featured during the festival are free and open to the public. Food and vendor items will be available for purchase. For more than a decade, the festival has honored the rich traditions, history and cultures of South Sumter, according to Dennis, and people from across the state attend. “We encourage people to come out and support Festival on the Avenue because it speaks of not only heritage, but it’s also family friendly and a good time,” Dennis said. “The festival brings people together, no matter their background. It’s like a huge family gathering.”

owntown Sumter will dress up in its finest gingham and seersucker for United Way’s 2019 Derby Day fundraiser, a Kentucky Derby watch party on May 4 featuring the finest local food and drink, music and, of course, a live viewing of the iconic horse race. “This is the sixth year of Derby Day, and it’s really become something people look forward to,” said Mindy Popovich, president of the United Way of Sumter, Lee and Clarendon Counties. “It’s a lot of fun — people get dressed up, and the ladies wear their Kentucky Derby hats.” The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. with a livestream of the “most exciting two minutes in sports” but continues long after. A variety of food, beer and wine will be catered until 10 p.m. by Hampton’s, Sidebar, With These Hands Natural Gourmet Foods and other local vendors. Myrtle Beach’s Tru Sol Band will perform from 7 to 10 p.m., playing Motown, oldies, hip-hop and R&B classics that will make dancing a must. “This is really danceable music,” said Kari Cruse, chief operating officer for United Way. “We’ve been trying to get Tru Sol for years.” Derby Day will also feature a silent auction with
sponsored prizes ranging from foodie gift baskets to jewelry to relaxing getaways. The event has 30 sponsors including Continental Tire, Palmetto Consulting of Sumter, state Rep. Murrell Smith and presenting sponsor Thompson Turner Construction. “All food and drink is provided to ticket buyers by our sponsors, which is huge for us,” Popovich said. “Each year we have some new vendors, and Derby Day is just a great opportunity to show off both our vendors and our sponsors.” All proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction benefit United Way of Sumter, Lee and Clarendon

Counties, making way for the nonprofit to provide new health, education and financial stability programming and assistance in the three counties — including rebuilding homes and other structures that were damaged in the 2015 1,000-year flood. Derby Day is the local United Way’s largest public fundraiser of the year, and last year’s event brought in more than $70,000 and about 350 Kentucky Derby enthusiasts. This year, organizers expect a similarly large turnout and are capping the event at 450 attendees. “I’m encouraging people to get their tickets soon because it’s a very popular event,” Popovich said. In addition to the financial boost given to the local United Way chapter, Derby Day is also a way to promote local businesses and show progress happening in the area, Cruse said. “The first year, we hosted Derby Day at an open green space in Sumter. Now, that’s a new [Hyatt Place] hotel in town,” Cruse said. “People come from all around to Derby Day, and it showcases the changes that are happening.”

t the bottom of the hill, Middleton Road turns to the north and runs parallel to the Wateree River Swamp. This section of dirt road passes through a magnificent sun-dappled forest of pines and hardwoods that lean in over the road and tower overhead. An old, abandoned railroad runs parallel to Middleton Road on the west side. The High Hills rise steeply away on the eastern side of the road. The big swamp floodplain stretches to the west below the old rail line. The road crosses a couple of deep ravines that are very steep. This is rough country. There are sections of this road that can be impassable in wet weather. This area is known as Foxville. There are turkeys here in these beautiful hills. portion of the 23,135-acre Manchester State Forest. The forest is a Wildlife Management Area open for turkey hunting Thursday through Saturday during the season. All WMA lands in South Carolina are closed to Sunday hunting. The turkey season on WMA land runs April 1 through May 4. There is a two-bird limit here. On a cool morning last spring, my son Clayton and I climbed the back of one of these hills. We stopped just below the summit and found a seat on a big pine log to wait on daylight. The woods woke up around us as the early morning light found the nearby treetops. Songbirds filled the air with a chorus of melodies. A turkey gobbled over on the other side of the hill. We listened for another gobble to confirm the direction, then moved around the hilltop to get closer to the bird. The turkey gobbled enough to keep us aware of his location. We
moved down the hill and crossed Middleton Road then stopped. The gobbler had flown down and was out in the big swamp. We found an open spot, sat down and started calling. He would answer but would not come any closer. Eventually we decided to give him the silent treatment and stopped calling. Maybe his curiosity would get him to come investigate. We sat and waited for a while, but a nearby gunshot in his direction told us that he might not be coming. Apparently, another hunter had been listening to him also. Manchester in Sumter County is just one of the many WMA tracts that offers turkey hunting on public land surrounding the Santee/Wateree Lake System. The 3,674-acre Wateree Heritage Preserve WMA is to the northwest and borders the Wateree River in Richland County. The adult and youth hunts are available by a lottery drawing only. To the south of Manchester in Clarendon County is the 1,105acre Hickory Top WMA. This tract hugs the side of Lake Marion and includes islands and a section of the Palmetto Trail. There
is a two-bird limit here. It is open to turkey hunting every day of the week but Sunday. Oak Lea WMA is a 2,000-acre tract in Clarendon County near Pinewood. It is open Thursday through Saturday. There is a two-bird limit here. There is an extensive network of public dirt roads, and the timber has been aggressively harvested here lately. Santee Cooper WMA In Orangeburg County near Eutawville is a 3,144-acre tract that is available for adult and youth turkey hunts by a lottery drawing. Santee Dam WMA is a 575-acre tract in Clarendon County. It is open every day of the week except Sunday. There is a two-bird limit. To apply for the lottery draw hunts, go to www.dnr.sc.gov/ hunting/drawhunts. Deadline for applications is Feb. 27. I’ve hunted most of these WMAs and have had good results. They vary by terrain and timber type. All have good populations of turkeys. Hunting pressure varies but tends to fall off later in the season.
