Dems blast GOP map Plan for county said to be illegal BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Nassau Democrats bashed a newly submitted legislative map from Republican county legislators claiming it violates federal and state laws and exemplifies extreme partisan gerrymandering. Under the GOP plan, Roslynarea villages would once again be split into four separate legislative districts, Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams said in a letter to Nicolello last week that his Democratic colleagues strongly objected to the maps of legislative districts pushed forward by the Republicans. Abrahams said the proposal goes against parts of the federal Voting Rights Act and the John. R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York. “As we have stated and demonstrated throughout this process, the members of the Democratic Minority Caucus will only support a map that adheres to all applicable local, state and federal laws,” Abrahams said. “The Minority delegation remains willing to cooperate, in a public and transparent manner, with the Majority in attempting to create a mutually agreeable map which meets all applicable legal standards and best serves the residents of Nassau County.” Continued on Page 39

E.W., Mineola races uncontested Four incumbent village officials face no opposition in March elections BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y The village elections for East Williston and Mineola will feature four incumbents running uncontested. The ballot in East Williston has Mayor Bonnie Parente and Trustees James Iannone and Raffaela Dunne running for re-election for four-year terms on Tuesday, March 21.
Mineola Trustee Donna Solosky is running for a one-year term to finish the original four-year term left vacant by Mayor Paul Pereira following his election last year. Williston Park has no village elections this year. Parente first ran unopposed for mayor in 2019, taking over from Mayor David Tanner, who sat on the village’s
board of trustees for 21 years, the last eight of which he served as mayor. Parente started her political career in East Williston after being elected trustee eight years ago at the coaxing of Tanner. She comes from a politically engaged family. Her father, Lou Santosus, is the former fire chief and deputy mayor of Mineola. Parente graduated from
Hofstra University and holds a law degree from Touro Law School. She has been a practicing attorney for over 25 years. She has also served on the village’s zoning board for two years and has been involved with Girl, Boy and Cub Scouts, Little League and other community organizations. Continued on Page 38
