Diocese Chapter 11 filing Cites lawsuits under Child Victims Act BY R O S E W E L D ON Facing scores of sexual abuse lawsuits, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Bishop John O. Barres announced. “We know that this will be difficult news for people across the diocese to hear, especially for many people of Long Island, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, who depend on the church in so many ways,” Barres said in a video posted to the diocese’s website last Thursday. The bishop cited lawsuits filed as a result of the Child Victims Act, which opened a “look back period” that increases the amount of time during which perpetrators of child abuse may be held criminally accountable and allows victims of these crimes to commence a civil lawsuit at any time before they reach 55 years of age, among other things. U.S. District Judge Eric Komitee initially ordered the release of defendant Baimadajie Angwang on a $1 million bond Friday before ruling that a hearing would be held to determine

the severity of a possible sentence if he is convicted and if deportation would be required, according to reports. Angwang, 33, a native of Tibet, supplied information on Tibetans living in the United States to Chinese officials, according to a criminal complaint. Angwang was also charged with committing wire fraud, making false statements and

obstructing an official proceeding, according to the Justice Department. Last month he was ordered detained by U.S. Magistrate Roanne Mann in federal court in Brooklyn, according to Newsday. Efforts to reach the federal court in Brooklyn regarding Angwang’s court appearance were unavailing. Continued on Page 33
