Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar said that residents are the main source of traffic violations in the village.
Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar said Monday that it is not outsiders that are the cause of an ongoing issue of drivers running stop signs in the village, it is the residents. “It’s our own residents. We need to be cautious while we’re driving. We need to slow down,” Ehrbar said at a Board of Trustees meeting. “We need to try our best to send our messages to our neighbors.” He continued, “Some residents follow the rules and some residents don’t.” Ehrbar said that he gets frus-
trated seeing drivers go through stop signs and not slowing down. He said he goes to Texas to see his grandchildren and notices that everybody stops at stop signs and red lights and slows down in school zones. “They just have a different way of doing things than we do in New York. In New York, we’re in a hurry to get everywhere,” Ehrbar said. Bob Mitchell, president of the Williston Park Civic Association, commended the board and the Nassau County Police Department’s 3rd Precinct for issuing 23 moving violations in the past month. Honoring vet bearing scars of combat BY J OH N N U G E N T The Mineola Board of Trustees and local veterans groups honored U.S. Army Sgt. Brendan Marrocco at a
Board of Trustees meeting last Wednesday. Sgt. Marrocco lost both arms and both legs in combat in Afghanistan in 2009. Local Korean War veteran
Bill Urianek, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, said he spearheaded a drive to raise money for Marrocco to help with his expenses. Urianek, who is known around Mineola as “Bill the Can Man,” has collected more than 1,150,000 cans and bottles since 2004 and has donated all the proceeds to veteran
causes. Urianek said he mobilized several local veteran organizations to raise funds for Marrocco. He said that children from the Elmont and Baldwin school districts and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Bellmore collected 400,000 cans in support of Marrocco. Ken Findlay, past com-
mander of American Legion Post 1033 in Elmont, who attended the ceremony with several of his fellow post members, said of Marrocco, “We take care of our own.” Also in attendance were members of American Legion Post 349 in Mineola and a group of U.S. Marine Corps veterans. Continued on Page 75
