The charity Warriors for a Cause participated in its sixth straight Tunnel to Towers run on Sunday. “It was a magnificent day,” Tony Lubrano, president of Warriors for a Cause, said. Warriors for a Cause is a 501(c) (3) group based in Mineola that raises money to donate to other foundations and charities, while getting heavily involved in event planning and community activities. The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk commemorates the service of firefighter Stephen Siller, who perished at
the World Trade Center the day of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Siller had just gotten off of a shift at Brooklyn Squad One when he heard news of the attack. “It’s an amazing story,” Patricia Palmeri, treasurer of Warriors for a Cause, said. “What he did that day and why we participate in this every year.” Siller returned to Squad One, got his gear and drove his truck to the Brooklyn entrance of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, which was already closed to traffic for security purposes. Siller ran from the tunnel to the towers, where he died helping in the evacuations. The Continued on Page 66
Math tutoring biz adds 2nd location BY J E D HENDRIXSON Since opening a Mathnasium tutoring location in New Hyde Park, Peter Abrams has
watched the business flourish. “We originally planned on opening a new location back in July 2017,” Abrams said. “We’ve seen a ton of success but there were a lot of moving
parts, moving people and it’s been delayed quite a while.” On Monday, Abrams opened a second Mathnasium location at 41 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola. Mathnasium is a franchise of math-centric tutoring centers focused on not only improving the skills of children who are struggling, but building upon
the success that children who already love math are making. It tutors students ranging from first to 12th grade. “I looked at a lot of franchises and nothing really jumped out at me,” Abrams said. “But then I found Mathnasium, I checked the criteria for a franchise and it was completely plausible.” “I even looked into differ-
ent tutoring franchises. I wasn’t very interested in the English ones or some of the other mathfocused types. There weren’t any deep-seated explanations being made.” Mathnasium currently has over 800 locations across the United States and nine more internationally, according to its website.
