Mineola trustees OK tutoring place, eatery Sylvan Learning, restaurant in market approved BY R E B ECC A KLAR The Mineola Board of Trustees unanimously voted last Wednesday to approve requests by two businesses to open in the village: a tutoring center and a casual Asian eatery. Patricia Russo, an Albertson resident, presented her plan to the board to open a Sylvan Learning center at 393 Jericho Turnpike. Russo currently has a Sylvan franchise in Huntington, but said she was able to

secure a center closer to her home. The tutoring center will be open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Russo said there is ample parking in the rear of the building and a municipal lot across the street. Deputy Mayor Paul Pereira said he sees the business as a low impact use of the lot. A Mineola resident also came to the podium and said he thinks it is a wonderful
idea. The board also heard from Jersey Qui, a Jericho resident, who wants to open a casual Asian eatery inside the existing SuperFl supermarket on 52 Jericho Turnpike. Qui made a presentation to the board at a December meeting. At the time, the board had a few issues with Qui’s proposed design. Qui’s architect was unable to attend his first hearing to address the board’s questions and concerns. Continued on Page 99
Ex fire chief to challenge Ehrbar for mayor in W.P. Anthony Gagliardi says he offers village new ideas BY R E B ECC A K L A R Anthony Gagliardi said it is time for change in Williston Park. That is one reason the former Williston Park Fire Department chief announced on Monday that he is running for mayor.
“I think I can bring new ideas on improving the functioning of our village,” Gagliardi said in a statement. He said he has nothing personal against current Mayor Paul Ehrbar, who previously announced his bid to run for another four-year term in March, but said that after eight
years he believes it is time for change. Gagliardi said that he feels “so strongly about serving as mayor” that he will not accept any salary or compensation for his service if he is elected. Gagliardi served as a member of the Williston Park Fire Continued on Page 100
