Wilson, Bush to share Huntington stage
K
ristian Bush has been making the impossible happen his whole life. He has conjured his musical dreams into reality three times – first with his rock duo Billy Pilgrim, then with his Grammywinning country duo Sugarland, and most recently as a solo artist. Now Bush is undergoing yet another reinvention and chasing another horizon. That horizon includes his latest album with the new single, “Sing Along,” a brand new record label, his first-ever publishing deal, and a foray into musical theater. All of this hope, determination and contagious compassion have led this country original to come into his own. “I feel like a new artist,” Bush says about the journey ahead. “And it’s exciting.” Bush is no newcomer. Sugarland cemented his status as a captivating stage presence and multi-platinumselling songwriter, earning him fans and friends around the world. In many ways, his solo debut, “Trailer Hitch,” in 2014 made this new chapter possible. Built on the strength of grooving melodies, catchy hooks, and feelgood wisdom, the song was a runaway country music success, giving fans the first taste of him as a distinct artist. “‘Trailer Hitch’ really helped validate what I sound like as a singer,” Bush says of his solo debut. “But also my belief system of putting a message into my music. That’s always been my game. Whether it was Sugarland or Billy Pilgrim or whatever, my wish was that it gets stuck in your head somehow, and then you can detangle the message as time goes by.” Now signed to Wheelhouse Records as an artist, songwriter and producer, Bush will have plenty of opportunity to spread his message. He’s producing rising star Lindsey Ell’s new project, he stepped into the
unknown to write original tunes for the new musical, “Troubadour,” opening Jan. 25 at Atlanta’s Alliance Theater, and he’s written meaningful new songs beyond “Sing Along.” Bush will showcase his solo musical accomplishments at an upcoming show at The Paramount on Friday, June 14 at 8 p.m., where he will share the stage withmulti-talented actress, producer, singer, and writer Rita Wilson. Wilson first donned her producer’s cap for the record-breaking, box-office hit, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (2002). She returned as a producer and appeared in its sequel, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” released in 2016. Wilson co-wrote and performs “Even More Mine,” the song which plays over the film’s credits. Wilson’s instincts proved solid once again when she saw the theatrical production of “Mamma Mia!” in London shortly after it opened. Her love of ABBA music led her to secure the rights and develop the motion picture, which was filmed on location in Greece. She served as a producer on the 2008 Universal hit that starred Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, and as executive producer for its sequel, “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!,” released last summer. Wilson starred in the independent film, “Emmett,” for which she contributed an original song, and in the recent feature film, “Gloria Bell,” along with Julianne Moore and Jon Turturro. Her past film credits include “Sleepless in Seattle,” “It’s Complicated,” “That Thing You Do!,” “Runaway Bride,” “The Story of Us,” “Beautiful, Ohio,” and “My Life in Ruins.” Wilson’s first love, however, is music. In May 2012, she realized a lifelong dream with the debut of her solo album, AM/FM, an intimate and elegantly sung collec-
tion of covers of her favorite songs from the 1960s and ’70s. Since then, Wilson has been focusing on a new component of her musical career as a songwriter. In March 2016, she released her self-titled second album, Rita Wilson, which showcases her skill for creating insightful pop music that is etched with stunning honesty. Wilson has toured around the country, opening for the band Chicago in the summer of 2016, and performing multiple times at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as at the famed Bluebird Café in Nashville and Café Carlyle in New York City. Writing about one of her recent Carlyle performances, the New York Times said, “Ms. Wilson has a catch in her voice that conveys yearning and potential heartbreak behind a façade of cheer. As a stage performer, she is gregarious and forthright; a natural entertainer.” Wilson’s new album, Bigger Picture, will be released on Sept. 28. Bigger Picture reunites her with producer Fred Mollin (Johnny Mathis, Jimmy Webb, Kris Kristofferson), expanding on her gifts as a storyteller and vocalist. With her third album, she has crafted a revelatory set of songs co-written with some of the most accomplished songwriters in Nashville and beyond, including the Warren Brothers (Tim McGraw, Dierks Bentley, and Toby Keith), Darrell Brown (LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, Ariana Grande), and her show partner Bush. In addition to Bigger Picture, Wilson also co-wrote and sang “Heart Unknown” for the upcoming film “Simple Wedding,” making its premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Sept. 21. For tickets to Bush and Wilson’s upcoming show, go to www.paramountny.com. The Paramount is located at 370 New York Ave. in Huntington.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum & Education Center in Garden City welcomed award-winning science journalist, bestselling author, and critically-acclaimed space historian Andrew Chaikin on May 23. Chaikin, a former Great Neck resident, was happy to be back on Long Island to see the museum’s actual lunar module and meet with guests for this private event. After the lecture, guests were treated to a screening of “Apollo 11: First Steps Edition” in IMAX format in the museum’s giant-screen, immersive Dome Theater. Chaikin is most famous as the author of “A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of Apollo Astronauts,” the basis for HBO’s “The Earth to the Moon” series. Throughout his lecture, Chaikin shared many wonderful stories about how the Apollo program inspired him and led him to a career as a space historian and author. He told insightful tales of things he learned from interviewing the Apollo astronauts and the work involved in putting together a historical record of their journeys. He also acknowledged the Grumman engineers who were in the audience for their contributions, including Alan Contessa Jr, who was a thermal insulation engineer on the lunar module and is now a volunteer at the museum. July 20, 1969 marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s landing and first steps on the moon. It was Long’s Island’s Grumman engineers who designed, built and tested all the lunar modules that enabled astronauts to visit the Moon and return to Earth safely. For one moment in time, the world watched and rejoiced together at one of the greatest human and technological achievements of our time. The Cradle of Aviation Museum offers the world’s greatest collection of lunar modules like the LM-13 and LTA-1, lunar module parts, artifacts, documentation,
and images. Visitors can experience the lunar module, the mission simulator and the Clean Room, as well as see a moon rock, an artifact from each mission to the moon, an Apollo astronaut suit and more. They also have the unique opportunity to hear stories from former Grumman engineers who worked on the lunar module and now support the museum as volunteer docents. Additionally, two upcoming events include an Apollo at 50 anniversary dinner honoring Apollo astronauts and flight directors on June 6, as well as a Community Countdown Celebration on July 20. The museum invites all to join together and be part of this historic anniversary for Long Islanders and the world. Details can be found at www.cradleofaviation.org/ apollo. The Cradle of Aviation Museum and Education Center is home to more than 75 planes and spacecraft representing over 100 years of aviation history and Long Island’s only Giant Screen Dome Theater. Currently, the museum is celebrating Countdown to Apollo at 50 sponsored by the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation, showcasing Long Island and Grumman’s significant role in the Apollo program. Additional sponsors of the 50th anniversary events include Northrop Grumman ASME, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Jet Blue Airways, PSEG Long Island, Merrill Lynch Riedy-Marano Group, Newsday, AppDynamics, News12, Terminal One, Lufthansa, Air France, Japan Airlines and Korean Air. The museum was recently recognized and listed on New York State’s National Register of Historic Places as a significant part of American history. The museum is located on Museum Row, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., in East Garden City. For more information, call 516-572-4111 or visit www.cradleofaviation.org.

Exhibit showcases fish hatchery, aquarium A 50-year retrospective of paintings by local artist Diane Lundegaard, entitled Looking Back, Looking Ahead, will be on exhibition at the Cold Spring Harbor Library Environmental Center from July 1 through Sept. 11. The works on display will include early sketches of local flora and fauna, including a small gem of
horses grazing at the former Randall McIntyre estate in Dix Hills, and later works, including images of the aquatic life at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium. Lundegaard, who earned her BFA and MA at SUNY at Stony Brook, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School
Diane Lundegaard with her painting of aquatic life at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium
in Dix Hills during the late 1960s. While in attendance, she took art classes with Lloyd Harbor sculptor Charles Reina, who then taught at the school. During this period, she also studied ballet with Iva Kitchell, a world-renowned dancer who resided in Dix Hills. Her husband, Stokely Webster, a distinguished impressionist painter, had his paintings displayed in Kitchell’s ballet studio. Seeing his work inspired Lundegaard to eventually spend a little more time painting than dancing. “The Websters were an amazing couple and both of them had a profound influence on my artistic endeavors. They were a creative well spring during an era when the arts on Long Island were still in their naissance,” said Lundegaard. After later spending time studying ballet and painting in Paris, Lundegaard made the decision to pursue painting. She studied with the New Realist painter Bill Beckman while she attended Staten Island College, and later had the opportunity to study Asian brush painting with May Wong Moy, also of Dix Hills. Around this time, Lundegaard began teaching art at East Woods School in Oyster Bay. After that, she joined the educational staff at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium. “My work as a Hatchery educator
gave me a particular type of exposure to the nature of aquatic life, which I then wished to share visually with others. The materials of Asian brush painting, ink, rice paper and bamboo brush, lent itself very well to depicting the mysterious world of our waterways. Since I have always had great concern for protecting our natural resources, I felt that by painting aquatic life, for example, fish, turtles, salamanders and the plants that live in the water, I could sensitize the public to at least one dimension of the environment in need of our protection,” said Lundegaard, a former member of the Long Island Regional Planning Board’s Citizens Advisory Committee’s 208 Federal Ground Water Study. Lundegaard’s award-winning paintings have been exhibited throughout the greater metropolitan area, and she continues to paint at her Dix Hills studio. Like Grandma Moses, she says she looks forward to painting through her golden years. A percentage of any proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium’s new Turtle Pond exhibition. For further information, contact the Hatchery at 516-692-6768 or info@cshfishhatchery.org. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium is on Rt. 25A in Cold Spring Harbor.

1-man performance inspired by poet Levi The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County will present, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Primo Levi, But When We Started Singing… The performance will take place on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m at Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove. This one-man performance, conceived and performed by Bob Spiotto, is inspired by the life and poetry of Holocaust survivor and world renowned author and poet and ItalianJew, Primo Levi (1919-1987). Robert Spiotto is a creative, artistic and management professional who has worked in arts and entertainment for more than 30 years. He holds a BFA in theater performance from Hofstra University and a MFA in directing from the Catholic University of America. Spiotto is currently the director of programs and special events at New York’s famous Friar’s Club. Previously, he served as the first executive/artistic director of the historic Suffolk Theater. Prior to this, Spiotto worked at Hofstra University (1990-2012) as executive producer and artistic director for Hofstra Entertainment, artistic director of community arts programs for the Hofstra Cultural Center, and director and producer of special events. He served on the faculty of Hofstra’s School of Continuing Education, taught classes for Hofstra’s summer camps, and was an adjunct professor in their school of communication, as well as Hofstra’s New College. Spiotto has received awards from Hofstra University for his distinguished service and teaching accomplishments.
Spiotto has directed hundreds of theater productions at various regional and professional theaters, schools and universities, as well as for various organizations and companies. He has also created and appeared in numerous one-man shows exploring the lives of P.T Barnum, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Primo Levi Michaelangelo, Sholom Aleichem, and others. A trio of his critically acclaimed one-man musical tributes include “That’s Amore: A Tribute to Mr. Hollywood Musical Harry Warren,” “Shades of Grey: A Musical Tribute to Joel Grey,” and “Courting the Jester: A Salute to Danny Kaye,” which was re-worked and presented at Lincoln Center. Primo Levi was born in Turin, Italy in 1919 to a family of assimilated and fairly non-religious Jews with Spanish roots. In 1943, he joined a band of partisans devoted to fighting Germans and Italian fascists. Levi spent 10 months at the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz and was liberated in 1945. In 1977, he retired from his position as manager of a chemical factory in Turin, devoting himself exclusively to writing until the time of his controversial death on April 11, 1987 in the apartment building where he was born and eventually took up residence. Levi is known for his novels and poetry collections such as “If This is a Man,” “The Periodic Table,” “If Not Now, When,” and “The Drowned and the Saved.” There is a $10 suggested donation to attend the event. Light refreshments will be served. Seats are limited; reservations are recommended. RSVP to 516-5718040 or info@hmtcli.org.
