YOUR GUIDE TO THE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DINING

A CELEBRATION OF CRAFT BEER BY B I L LY F I T Z PAT R I C K Beer lovers from across Long Island can enjoy a few cold ones under the summer sun at Heckscher State Park on Saturday at this year’s Long Island Craft Classic event. The Long Island Craft Classic returns for a fourth straight year Aug. 10 at its East Islip location, giving those in attendance the opportunity to try as many beers as they can in a four-hour timespan, including some they might not have ever heard of. “The purpose of the Long Island Craft Classic is for people to find beers they never had and to purchase them again at tasting rooms or stores or bars,” said Andy Calimano, co-founder and managing partner of Starfish Junction Productions, the Bay Shore-based event production company behind the Long Island Craft Classic. “People will try these new beers and can write down or take pictures of what they’re sampling so they can find them in other places.” This year’s Craft Classic includes 42 participating breweries and beer companies, 15 of which hail from Long Island. Calimano says they start recruiting breweries long before the Craft Classic to begin building the event’s lineup of participants. “We start nine months before (the event), reaching out to those who might be interested,” said Calimano. “Some who have been with us since the beginning, such as Blue Point Brewing, are automatic, while some of the smaller and newer breweries will actually reach out to us about participating.” “A lot of the breweries have their own tasting rooms now, too, so they tend to have signs up at the Craft Classic advertising their tasting room hours for people to snap pictures of and pay a visit to,” added Calimano. “This type of advertising especially helps some of the newer and small-

er breweries that are participating.” Breweries will once again be competing for the Golden Keg, the award given to the winner of the BREW’D Competition, which is a contest between breweries to create a beer using a fan-selected mystery ingredient, which was chosen through an online public vote. Two years ago, Greenport Harbor teamed up with Destination Unknown to create the Fuzzy Flamingo using peaches, which was the 2017 winning ingredient. Last year, Long Ireland Beer Co. took home the Golden Keg by creating its Moku Loa beer using the fan-selected ingredient of pineapple. This year’s ingredient for the BREW’D

Competition? Mango. “We get a lot of different ingredients nominated for the competition, but the crazier ones go nowhere,” said Calimano. “This year pickles were nominated, marshmallow was nominated, but they went nowhere. This year, mango was the BREW’D Competition winner, and this is the only place to try these experimental beers.” Added Calimano, “New this year to the BREW’D Competition is the addition of non-commercial homebrewers. So instead of giving away one Golden Keg, we’ll be giving away two. One to the professional brewer receiving the most votes

and one to the top vote-getting homebrew brewer.” In addition to beer, the Craft Classic will also feature eight wineries, two malternatives and three cideries, something that Calimano said has become more popular over the four years he’s been organizing the beer festival. So even if you aren’t an avid beer drinker, there’s still something for everyone. Besides drinks, the Craft Classic even has you covered when it comes to finding a bite to eat. Included in your admission ticket is food from local barbecue restaurant, Bobbique. “What’s unique about the Craft Classic is that we’ve teamed up with Bobbique again, so everyone in attendance gets a free sandwich and side dish included in their ticket,” said Calimano. “We’ve partnered with Bobbique all four years we’ve done the event because we think the barbecue food pairs great with the beer and they always do a great job serving up enough food for everybody in just four hours.” If you’re looking for something to do in between drinks, the event will also have live music from the local band Albums We Love, Instagram and photo opportunities, backyard games such as cornhole and giant jenga and something new to this year’s Craft Classic – axe throwing. “Axe throwing is something we added to this year’s event, it’s something not a lot of people have done before,” said Calimano. “It’s fenced in, it’s secure and safe, so there’s nothing to worry about. You get three axes that you get to throw and the goal is to hit the bulls-eye. It’s pretty popular down in New Jersey, so it’s exciting that we’re able to bring it out to Long Island.” Proceeds from this event will help raise money and awareness for two incredible local charities, Kids Need More and Natural Heritage Trust. Both VIP and general admission tickets remain on sale for this year’s Long Island Craft Classic, but a sellout is expected. VIP tickets are priced at $75 and general admission at $55, both of which can be purchased online at www.licraftclassic. com. All ticket holders will receive a 5-ounce souvenir cup to sample beers, with a 2-ounce pour line for all drinks available at the festival. The Craft Classic kicks off at 2 p.m. for those with general admission tickets, while VIPs get to take advantage of a bonus hour, which begins at 1 p.m. For more information, visit www.licraftclassic.com.

Long Island Nets to wear Westbury Manor to serve ‘Mame’ fan-designed jersey The Long Island Nets are entering their fourth season as the G League affiliate of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, and this year they are allowing the fans to choose what they wear. The Nets are calling on their fans to design a special jersey that the team will wear on multiple occasions during the upcoming 2019-20 season, as part of the team’s “Our Island” campaign. Fans are invited to design and submit their own jersey concepts that represent the team’s Long Island roots and what it means to them to be a Long Islander. The “Our Island” fan-designed jersey will be worn at three Long Island Nets home games, and all jerseys will be autographed by individual players and raffled off to benefit a non-profit organization at the end of the season. The beneficiary will be announced at a later date. “We see this contest as a great opportunity for our fans to

express themselves creatively,” said Long Island Nets Vice President of Business Operations Alton Byrd. “As Long Island’s team, it’s important that we represent and engage our community in fun and unique ways.”

Entries can be submitted online at https://longisland. gleague.nba.com/jersey-designcontest/. The team is accepting entries until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 18, and will be notifying the winner on Sept. 9. The win-

ner will be publicly announced later in September. The designer of the winning concept will receive a personalized “Our Island” jersey and four courtside seats to the three “Our Island” home games during the 2019-2020 season. Fans who are interested in submitting designs should follow the below guidelines for submission: Design must include Long Island Nets logo. Design should include OUR ISLAND or Long Island wording. Jersey template should not be altered in any way, including placement of logos, per NBA G League regulations. Base color of jersey design must be a dark color. Design must be original. Design should be submitted in JPG, PNG or PDF format. For more information about the jersey design contest, visit LongIslandNets.com.

‘Sex and the City’ author to attend L.I. fest On Monday, Aug. 12, the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington will host “Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell for an exclusive Long Island appearance at this year’s Long Island LitFest. Bushnell will be with fellow author Ellen Meister and will discuss her life, the impact of “Sex and the City,” and her newest novel, “Is There Still Sex in the City?” Members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask Bushnell questions, meet the author, and have their copy of her new book signed. Bushnell’s other works include “Four Blondes,”

“Lipstick Jungle,” “The Carrie Diaries,” “One Fifth Avenue,” “Trading Up,” “Summer and the City,” and “Killing Monica.” Her “Sex and the City” books were published in 1996 and were the foundation for the hit HBO series and two blockbuster movies. Now, in “Is There Still Sex in the City?” Bushnell returns to the city to give us another look at sex, dating, and friendship in New York City after 50. Bushnell looks at love and life from all angles: marriage and children, divorce and bereavement, as well as the very real pressures on women to maintain their youth and have it all. This

is a pull-no-punches social commentary and an indispensable companion to one of the most revolutionary dating books of the 20th century. The cost to attend the appearance is $45 for members of the Cinema Arts Centre and $50 for the general public. Tickets also include a copy of Bushnell’s “Is There Still Sex in the City?” as well as the author discussion, an audience Q&A and a book signing. Roosevelt Field is celebrating summer by shining the spotlight on young and local singers. Check out local singers at this year’s Spotlight on Singing event presented by Rick Eberle in North Court on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 12 to 4 p.m. There will be live music performed by young talent, including a sister quartet from Freeport, Tracy; along with solo artists from Long Island Robert Eberle, Sammi Rae Murciano and other young performers Jenna Rose and Penelope Robin. “We are thrilled to be hosting Spotlight on Singing at Roosevelt Field,” said Nancy Gilbert, director of marketing at Roosevelt Field. “Spotlight on Singing is a great opportunity for the family to enjoy live entertainment, while dining and shopping. We strive to offer an exciting environment for our customers and Spotlight on Singing is just one way we entertain our shoppers.” For more information on the Spotlight on Singing, visit www.Rooseveltfield. com. About Tracy The group Tracy rose to fame back in 2015 following performances at the Apollo, in which they came in second at Amateur Night and quickly gained notoriety, as the sisters had always sung at family occasions since they were young. However, they officially became Tracy five years ago. The four Long Island girls from Freeport include Sydney, Juani, Tyler and Sincere Williams. About Robert Eberle Eberle has been singing for most of his life here on Long Island. At only 13, he began writing his own original music. His debut single, “collect & change.” will be released shortly and will be available on iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, and Apple Music. Eberle is currently training in acting and voice. About Sammi Rae Murciano A Long Island native, Murciano has been singing for four years and garnering a ton of praise from audiences nationwide. In

her brand-new single “Escápate” the magnetic collaboration with Reggaetón artist Los Vegas brings to life the sentimental romance often featured in Reggaetón hits with an energetically pumping backbeat and laid-back flow that is sure to make it a club favorite. Another single “Dream Bigger”, was released earlier this year and follows a story of empowerment through knowing your worth in a relationship, which Murciano elaborated on saying “I have been broken and I have had my heart ripped into pieces. The hardest battle is what you know in your head and what you feel in your heart. Never settle for anything less than you deserve and choose what will make you happy.” About Jenna Rose In 2010, Rose gained media attention at 11 years old with her video “My Jeans.” The Music Video went viral on YouTube with over 15 million views and catapulted her rapidly into the public arena. CROSSWORD PUZZLE

COMMUNITY NEWS

Skateboarders raise money for cancer Devin Votta, 24, of Levittown, and three of his childhood friends have figured out the perfect way to carve for a cause. On August 3 and 4, Votta and his friends – Sean, James and Steven Reilly, also of Levittown – strapped on their helmets and transformed into the skateboarding team of Ride 4 Life: Carving 4 A Cause. The intrepid quartet hit the streets of Long Island, starting their journey at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park and ending at Montauk Lighthouse – a journey of more than 120 miles – as part of a fundraising effort to benefit Cohen’s SURFF (Survivors Facing Forward) program, led by Dr.Jonathan Fish, director of the SURFF program. For Devin, the difficult journey is the best way he can think of to pay homage to his beloved grandfather, Daniel Huggard, who passed away on April 30, 2017, from leukemia. Devin was not able to say goodbye to his grandfather in time.

“Ride 4 Life will show that no battle is too tough, no road too far and no fight too strong when people work together for a cause,” said Votta. “We have set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to celebrate and honor the lives of these brave children.” During a brief visit to Cohen Children’s, Fish congratulated the team on their dedication and compassion and thanked them for their generosity. “I can’t emphasize enough how appreciative we are to Devin and the Ride 4 Life team,” said Fish. “We know this will be a difficult trip. On behalf of the entire Cohen Children’s staff, and the hundreds of children we treat every year living with cancer, we thank you for this incredible act of generosity.” To learn more about the team, or if you’re interested in making a donation, please see http://www.ride4life-c4c.com.
