Ed Mullins quits sergeants assoc. amid probe, fallout from comments BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association in New York City, has resigned following FBI raids Tuesday at his Port Washington home and the union’s headquarters in Manhattan. In a statement to its membership, the union’s executive board, said the nature and scope of the criminal investigation has yet to be determined. The board requested that Mullins resign, which he agreed to Wednesday morning, the statement said. “The day to day functioning and the important business of the SBA cannot be distracted by the existence of this investigation,” the statement said. Mullins, who has been a member of the NYPD since 1982, assumed his role as president on July 1, 2002.
Multiple reports said FBI agents left the lower Manhattan headquarters with cardboard boxes before loading them into a van and driving off. According to the Daily News, some of the boxes appeared to hold a hard drive and electronic equipment. Mullins has drawn attention for multiple attacks on NYPD leadership and Mayor Bill de Blasio. Last year, Mullins posted from the union’s Twitter account an unredacted arrest report about De Blasio’s daughter, Chiara, after she was arrested at a protest against the death of George Floyd. Mullins was given a disciplinary charge for the tweet and a trial is scheduled for Oct. 27.
