3 Port fires believed to be unconnected 2 blazes deemed suspicious; all 3 in week span BY J ES S I C A PA R K S Three fires broke out in Port Washington within the span of a week, and all three have undetermined causes, according to the Nassau County fire marshal’s office. Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said the first two of the three fires have been deemed suspicious and are under investigation. Detective Chris Barling with the Nassau County Police Department said the three fires are not believed to be connected. First Assistant Chief Brian Waterson of the Port Washington Fire Department said the fire was contained to the car, which was deemed a total loss. The fire marshal’s office did not determine the car fire to be suspicious, according to Uttaro. Two days earlier on the night of Aug. 20, multiple bales of hay were found on fire at a construction site at 56 Ashwood Road, Uttaro said. The fire did not spread further than the hay, Waterson said. Housing is being built at the site. And the first of the three fires engulfed a shed at the
Manorhaven Beach Park Pool in the early morning of Saturday, Aug. 17. The shed was owned by Kostal Paddle. None of the incidents resulted in injuries to civilians or firefighters, according to Waterson. Chris Bollerman, public information officer for the Port Washington Fire Department, said “over the past 10 days there have been three incidents that the department responded to where the Nassau County fire marshal’s office has been notified to assist in determining the cause and origin of the fire.” He referred any further questions to the county fire marshals.
