Dioxane testing at Morley

Pilot treatment of Port water BY J E S S I C A PA R K S The Port Washington Water District will run a pilot study to treat 1,4-dioxane in three drinking water wells in Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn. The contaminant 1,4-dioxane is a clear liquid that mixes easily in water. It is often used in the manufacturing of other chemicals and has been used as a stabilizer in solvents, paint strippers, greases and wax. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies the chemical as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans” through all routes of exposure.! David Brackett, the chairman of the water district’s board, said that while no federal maximum contamination level has been set for 1,4-dioxane, the members of the water district believes it is time to take action. In December, the state’s Drinking Water Quality Council recommended that the state Department of Health adopt a maximum contaminant level of 1 part per billion for 1,4-dioxane. Continued on Page 55

Saur elected as Port library trustee Kids Need Enrichment founder wins with 397 votes; 7.3M budget passes BY J E S S I C A PA R K S Adrienne Saur won election to the Port Washington Public Library’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday in a three-way race. The founder of Kids Need Enrichment, an organization focused on bringing science and
technology opportunities to Port Washington, received 397 votes. She vied for the seat against Beth Horn and Matthew Straus, who received 227 and 189 votes respectively. Saur will take the place of Trustee Robert Lee Aitken, who stepped down, for a five-year term. In a separate vote, the $7.3 million budget was approved with 770 votes in favor and 63!opposed.!
Saur said she is incredibly touched by the outpouring of support she has received from the community. “I look forward to working with the other trustees to continue the library’s leadership in providing the Port Washington community with the resources and opportunities to thrive,” she said on Wednesday. In her opening statement at the Meet the Candidates night hosted by the League of Women
Voters of Port Washington and Manhasset last month, Saur said her primary focus would be bringing ideas to the table, helping the library connect with other institutions and providing whatever support the library staff would need to continue the library’s mission.
