8 Design Trends That Will Enhance BY L I Z A N . B U R BY Whether you want a fresh look for an existing room, have been thinking about expanding your home entertainment options or are considering a complete remodel, there are eight design trends that are popular as we head into 2024. Now may be the perfect time to act on them. As interest rates have increased, so has the appeal of home renovations, said Jillian Dahlman, who with her partner Oshri Adri, is a founder and lead designer of Adri + Dahlman Interiors in Great Neck. “People are hunkering down in their homes and doing projects they held off on because they thought this was going to be their starter home. Instead, they’re investing in their homes and committing to their spaces with updates,” she said.

LIGHTING

Transforming a room’s ambiance with lighting has evolved beyond mere functionality. According to Claudia Grunberger, owner of Grunberger Interiors in Great Neck, the current trend is lighting fixtures that serve as expressive pieces, with an emphasis on oversized, sculptural designs. “Lighting has transcended its utilitarian role and has morphed into a veritable art form suspended in your room,” she said. “The market offers a plethora of sculptural lighting options, featuring diverse finishes, materials and designs. These fixtures are available in various shapes, offering a contemporary twist on the conventional chandelier. For instance, I recently designed a dining room incorporating a striking silver chandelier with bottle-shaped downlights, creating an intimate ambiance by casting a soft glow over the dining table.” According to Grunberger, it’s also important to create different layers of lighting within a room as opposed to just relying on a single overhead fixture or recessed ceiling lighting. She recommends adding multiple table lamps to create different pockets of light throughout the space. “This multi-tiered lighting approach not only enhances functionality; it also adds depth and character,” she said. “With a diverse selection of materials available for table and floor lamps, including metal, rattan, marble and porcelain, these lighting elements serve as exquisite design accents that elevate the overall aesthetics of a space.”

PAINT

The easiest and quickest way to redo a room—or your entire home—is by changing the paint colors. Grunberger said that in recent years there’s been a shift away from the gray palette toward black and white and warmer tones.

That makes this the perfect time to consider the design options below, which vary from relatively quick changes—like lighting, paint, wallpaper, window treatments and flooring—to more complex renovations.

A patterned wallpapered ceiling—combined with a statement organic feel chandelier with dramatic roman shades—adds a pop of color and elegance to the space, from Claudia Grunberger, owner of Grunberger Interiors in Great Neck. “People just want their interiors to feel cozy and happy, a real refuge from the outside,” she said. Popular colors are beige and burnt orange, while greens and blues continue to endure. In fact the latter is reflected in the colors of the year from paint manufacturers. Sherman Williams named Upward as their color for 2024, “a breezy, blissful blue.” Benjamin Moore cited Blue Nova 825 as their color that has “depth and intrigue balanced by an undercurrent of reassurance.”

WALLPAPER

That has meant designing spaces that make a home more permanent with an emphasis on style and functionality. While homeowners can consider jumpstarting those changes yearround, many area families prefer to wait until their kids are away at summer camp, Adri said. But don’t think that indicates your planning is several months away. When it comes to considering what you want to do, the earlier the better, since for most projects there are a lot of moving parts. “You have to draw up the plans and specify all the materials you want and then you have to purchase them, which takes a while,” Dahlman said. “Giving yourself a few months to have everything set up and knowing all the things you’re going to order helps so you can then pull the trigger when you’re ready and have everything on hand for your contractor.”

Another straightforward way to personalize a room is with wallpaper, which has come a long way since your grandmother’s kitchen and bathroom. Today’s wall coverings come in bold prints and colors and integrate unique materials like glass beads, nail heads and even eco-friendly options like hyacinth leaves. Patterns include stone, brick, concrete, geometric lines and florals and damasks. There’s also a wide variety of hues with cool choices like blues, greens, lavenders and grays and warm tones in reds, yellows, oranges and peaches. All this versatility can significantly impact the overall feel and style of a room. Grunberger said it can be applied in various ways, such as creating accent walls to establish focal points, covering all the walls for a bold and cohesive look or even adorning ceilings for a unique touch. “Customization options allow for tailored designs, and murals, in particular, can serve as captivating backdrops for a well-thought-out design scheme,” she said. “With endless possibilities for adding texture and pattern, wallpaper can be a transformative tool in harmonizing a room’s decor, furniture and color scheme while reflecting your personal style.” Wallpaper is also a great way to cover wall flaws like nicks and cracks. Expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $200 per double roll; more if you have it professionally installed.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

According to Grunberger, window treatments are an indispensable way to complete a room, but the impact is frequently underestimated as homeowners tend to buy products that obscure windows. She encourages a more thoughtful approach to window design that frames and enhances this valuable asset, ensuring that it remains a focal point in the room. “By framing windows with carefully selected fabrics, you can transform these architectural features into central design elements in your space,” she said. “This approach not only adds visual interest and style but also accentuates the connection between your interior and the outdoor environment. Rather than merely covering them up, treating windows with a thoughtfully chosen fabric scheme around a window can add height and width while incorporating the use of shades for light filtration and privacy.”

a Home’s Style and Functionality While custom window treatments represent a significant investment, their enduring beauty and functionality make them worth every penny, Grunberger said. Depending on the dimensions, fabric and the number of layers, a single window could start at $3,000 and larger windows, as much as $15,000. But you don’t have to do them all at once. Grunberger recommends crafting unique and individualized looks for each space, ensuring that your window treatments seamlessly integrate with your overall design scheme.

“It’s very affordable, highly durable and scratch resistant, holding up nicely with all those pets,” she said. “The quality is such that you can’t tell the difference between wood and vinyl. Similarly, linoleum products can look like marble and stone and they’re also affordable.” Mehler said that the original floors in most older Long Island homes have planks that are 1 ½ to 2 inches wide. But the new trend is wider vinyl planks, from 5 to 7 inches. As for color, the trend is to go lighter with more neutral, warm and earthy tones. Pricing depends on the grade and durability. It can start from $2 to $5 per square foot for materials, depending on plank width, and $4 to $13 per square foot for installation. Mehler said there’s also a move away from wall-to-wall carpet in favor of area rugs. “Carpeting just isn’t as easy to clean. But with an area rug, you can simply replace it as opposed to removing all of the carpet. It’s an easier solution and a little less expensive,” she said.

Since the pandemic shutdown, when many families expanded to include pets and the daily foot traffic also increased, homeowners are investing in more durable floor options. As a result, Karen Mehler, owner of Karen Mehler Designs in Syosset, said that she’s designing with wood floor laminate or vinyl.

REMODELING

For bigger, bolder alterations, the open floor concept is still popular, said T.J. Costello, owner of Hierarchy Architecture + Design, PLCC in Manhasset. Part of that open floor plan can include adding a family room that’s connected to the kitchen. A more recent trend is to remove the walls from a formal dining room to create a more casual dining area that’s part of the larger flow. FIREPLACES

The cozy image of a fireplace has gone through a radical transformation in recent years with the popularity of appliances that use propane or natural gas that can be lit with the click of a switch. While many area homes already have traditional wood-burning fireplaces, Dennis Lawrence, project manager of Taylor’s Hearth & Leisure in Franklin Square, said that gas is more efficient at providing heat and increasingly people are getting tired of dealing with cords of wood and the clean-up.

Traditional fireplaces can be completely refurbished by adding a gas element like a log or a new look with glass or river rock. If the fireplace is original, you may also want to update the mantel, hearth, doors and surrounding surface. To overhaul an existing fireplace, Lawrence said the gas element might be around $2,000; doors start at $1,800; a mantel, $2,500; and surrounding materials, which can be granite or stacked stone, add to the cost. With labor, the starting price range is around $10,000. A popular alternative is the linear unit, also called a rectangular or frame-

less fireplace. They offer a contemporary look, with a straight line of fire coming up through a medium like broken glass, pebbles and geometric shapes. Lawrence said homeowners like it to be the centerpiece of the room with the TV above. Depending on the materials, they start around $11,000; much more if a wall has to be built to encompass that unit. Another option is the electric fireplace. “The technology has come a long way and a benefit is the cost, as well as the lack of heat output. You don’t need to worry about a mantel to protect the TV from the heat,” Lawrence said. “It’s generally a small electric coil heater, which can take the chill out of the air in a smaller room.” Prices start at $1,800.

Costello advised Nassau homeowners to be aware that renovations to expand beyond space that’s already within the home’s footprint will require a zoning analysis to be sure if it can be done. “People are looking for a space to expand sideways, down, up. But a zoning analysis by an architect is necessary to see what’s the maximum they can build, because it’s all related to their maximum square footage, property line or sky plane setbacks,” he said. “Maybe a home has reached their maximum on the left side, but they can add to the back or to the right. We have to look at all the parameters of what the code would allow. And you can’t just assume you can go straight up without a review of each local code.”

The North Shore of Long Island has emerged as a hub for luxury real estate, captivating buyers from both near and far. The region’s picturesque charm, coupled with its close proximity to the city and the Hamptons, has established it as a highly desirable destination for those seeking an elevated living experience. The North Shore lifestyle boasts stunning landscapes, thriving communities, and access to top-notch amenities, making it particularly appealing for individuals looking to relocate from New York City.
