Support on display at NHP 5K 13th annual Katie’s Run held in village BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Hundreds of spectators and runners came out Sunday morning to Lakeville Road in New Hyde Park for the 13th annual Katie’s Run to honor the memory of Katie McBride and raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House. The event is held in honor of Katie McBride, who died at age 11 in 2008 from a rare cancer known as Burkitt’s Lymphoma. The 5K run in the village and ensuing barbeque at Memorial Park is another example to show what community support is all about. “All the support is phenomenal, the New Hyde Park community is the best,” Jeanne McBride, Katie’s mother, told Blank Slate Media. “We had so many organizations come out and help us. There were so many volunteers, they give us tremendous support and we are so blessed.” The run is sponsored by the Katie McBride Foundation, which Michael McBride and Jeanne created to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities New York Metro in the village, where the McBrides stayed while Katie received treatment. Since 2010, the foundation has raised $485,000 overall with $185,000 going to the Ronald McDonald House and $300,000 to other charities, scholarships and families Continued on Page 42

Nassau crime drops 1% thru May County police statistics show small drop after 41% increase in all of ‘22 BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Major crimes in Nassau County as of May 29 have dropped by 1.07% compared to the same period last year, according to statistics provided by the Police Department. The Nassau Police Department said on its website that 2,776 major crimes occurred from Jan. 1-May 29 this year,
a 1.07% decrease. The website does not show a comparison between 2021 and 2022 when year-end crime statistics showed a 41% increase in major crimes. The list of major crimes includes murder, rape, criminal sexual acts, sexual abuse, grand larceny, commercial robberies, other robberies, assault felonies, residential burglaries, other
burglaries and stolen vehicles. A total of 8,443 “other crimes” were reported by the department through the same time period, a 13.65% increase from last year. Nassau has reported five murders, two sexual abuse incidents, one criminal sexual act and three rapes so far this year. By comparison, a total of two murders, six sexual abuse incidents,
two criminal sexual acts and four rapes were reported last year during the same time period, according to the statistics. Stolen vehicles were reported 281 times so far this year, a 40.84% decrease from last year. Commercial robberies and other burglaries have increased this year by 24.29% and 31.48%, respectively.
