Target proposed to fill vacancy in L. Success center

Move would incorporate space left unoccupied by former Sears BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z A new department store could soon fill a vacant storefront in the Lake Success Shopping Center, according to plans submitted to the Town of North Hempstead. Plans to have a Target occupy two-thirds of the store that was formerly occupied by a Sears were submitted to the town and were initially scheduled to go before the Board of Zoning Appeals on Nov. 13, according to Newsday. That hearing was rescheduled for Wednesday. According to the plans submitted by the shopping center’s landlord, Lake Success Shopping Center LLC, the Target would include groceries, retail, a Starbucks and a CVS Pharmacy, the layout of most stores in Nassau County. Town spokeswoman Rebecca Cheng said that as of Tuesday, the landlord had applied for a conditional use permit for the grocery component and for a Starbucks
inside the store. The proposed renovations feature work on the cellar and first floor of the 1400 Union Turnpike location, resulting in an approximate 78,000-square-foot Target, according to the plans. The Sears closed its doors in 2018, joining 45 other locations and 13 additional KMart stores nationwide. Sears Holdings Chairman and former CEO Eddie Lampert won a bankruptcy auction in January 2019, which prevented the liquidation of the company. Schuckman Realty has been marketing the three-floor, 118,000-square-foot space as an anchor location at the center, featuring 684,000 residents within a five-mile radius and strong co-tenancy with the other retailers since the Sears store closed in November 2018. “We’ve had multiple suitors approach us about filling the locaContinued on Page 55
