Residents fighting Belmont proposal Community coalition kicks off campaign to try and stop plans for proposed hockey arena BY R E B ECC A K L A R Eileen Prymaczek said when her hometown of Flushing started getting overdeveloped, nobody spoke out. Prymaczek said she is ready to speak out now to make sure the same doesn’t happen to her new home, Floral Park. Floral Park’s suburban nature is being threatened by the proposed Belmont Arena project, according to Prymaczek and about two dozen other residents of Floral Park and Elmont who kicked off a community campaign on Sunday afternoon. Members of the Belmont Park Community Coalition marched along Hempstead Turnpike outside Belmont Park to raise PHOTO BY REBECCA KLAR concerns over the proposed development. The campaign will “wake up residents” Civil right attorney Norman Siegel joins two young advodates in a kick off to what the proposed project entails, said rally on Sunday for a summer campaign led by the Belmont Community Tammie Williams, a community organizer from Elmont. Coalition.

“We want them to know that this project can be halted and we can get smart growth development,” Williams said. “Minimum wage jobs do not pay the rent. Neither do they pay the mortgages.” The project, approved in January by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, proposes to create a 19,000-seat arena as well as a hotel and retail center. Williams said the group is not against development – it would just like to see smart development. This isn’t the first time members of the community have opposed the project. In December when two bids were presented to the community, a handful of residents, including Williams, demonstrated outside before the hearing stating the concerns they voiced on Sunday. to each poppy. “Surprisingly, you wouldn’t even know it was a soda bottle,” Thomas said. The troop members," Emerson Lucatorto," Tulah Chatterton," Julia Manolios," Cailtin Burns," Ella Iannetti and" Chloe Iannetti, have all been hands on in putting together the project, Thomas said."

They first presented their idea to the Floral Park village board in November. In addition to honoring the veterans – and keeping the bottles out of landfills – the project is raising money for service dogs, Thomas said.
