Dems block Plandome phase 2 Support initial work on sewers BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y A tense Town of North Hempstead Town Board meeting Tuesday night saw a unanimous vote to support the installation of a sewer main along Plandome Road as part of the Manhasset Sewer Conversion Project and a split vote on party lines to block a resolution transferring $3.1 million in federal funds for phase two of the project. The three-and-a-half-hour meeting included a more than hour-long discussion on whether the town can use American Rescue Plan Act money on behalf of private businesses for phase 2 of the project. Town Attorney John Chiara has been having ongoing discussions on the question with an attorney for the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce, which has been spearheading the project. The six-member board voted 3-3 on the resolution to use the federal funds, with Republicans voting for and Democrats voting against it. Councilmember Robert Troiano, a Democrat, was not present at Tuesday night’s meeting. Council Member Veronica Lurvey, a Democrat, said she intends to reintroduce the resolution to provide the ARPA funding at the April 4 meeting. Supporters of the sewer project, Continued on Page 55

No challengers in Manhasset races Plandome Manor Mayor Barbara Donno up for re-election on March 21 BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z No challengers emerge in Manhasset area’s March 21 elections. Village of Plandome Manor Mayor Barbara Donno and Trustees Matthew Clinton and James Baydar are up for re-election to two-year terms. All three incumbents are running uncontested. Village Justice Susan Katz Richman, who was appointed to fill a
vacancy last year, will be running in the election for a four-year term. Efforts to reach representatives from the Villages of Plandome and Plandome Heights on their elections were unavailing. In 2021, Plandome Mayor Thomas Minutillo, Deputy Mayor Don Richardson and Trustee John Kurkjian were all re-elected to two-year terms. Minutillo was first elected af-
ter a successful write-in campaign in 2019. Also in 2021, Plandome Heights Trustees Daniel Cataldo, Gus Panopolus and Norman Taylor were all reelected to the board for another two years after uncontested elections. Flower Hill Trustees Mary Jo Collins, Max Frankel and Frank Genese are also running for two-year seats on the board. All three are uncon-
tested in their re-election bids. Genese is seeking a fourth term on the board, while Collins and Frankel are both looking to secure their second full terms. Frankel, who grew up in the village’s Roslyn area and moved back in 2012, ran in 2021 after former Trustee Jay Beber decided not to run again.
