YOUR GUIDE TO THE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DINING

HERRICKS PLAYERS TURN 43 YEARS OLD BY TOM MCCARTHY The Herricks Players will be celebrating their 43rd year with a presentation of the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on Nov. 8-10 and Nov. 15-17. This is the second year where John Hayes, founder of the program when it was known as the Herricks Community Players, will not be directing the production. “It’s wildly entertaining. It has a huge live orchestra which you don’t see very often and it’s great theater right here in people’s backyards,” director John Mezzo said in an interview at a dress rehearsal Tuesday. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” has lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story is based on the “coat of many colors” story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. Mezzo, who said he has been performing with the players on and off since 1991, said this is the first production he has directed for the Herricks Players. “It’s been challenging, but rewarding,” Mezzo said. “The Herricks Community Players has been in existence for over 40 years,”

The Herricks Players are rehearsing for their upcoming presentation of the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on Nov. 8-10 and Nov. 15-17. Mezzo said Mezzo said that the organization has been rebranding itself, designing new logos, increasing outreach and changing the “Herricks Community Players.” They now go by “Herricks Players.” Mezzo said that he even proposed to his now wife on stage in his

first Herricks Players production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 1991. “We typically do two shows a year,” Mezzo said. In the fall, the players host a small musical or a play and in the spring they do a “big” musical. John Hayes was always the di-

rector and his wife, Carole, usually serving as a producer until he had to step down due to illness, Mezzo said. The organization will become more democratic, Mezzo said, where the players’ board of directors will choose a new director for each production.

The Herricks Players mainly offer adult productions, but once in a while, they will pick shows requiring children, like this fall’s musical including a children’s choir. The Herricks Players are sponsored by the Herricks Community Fund, Hayes said. “The kids are amazing. They are vocally beautiful,” Mezzo said. Hayes, while no longer directing or officially involved with the Herricks Players, stopped by Tuesday’s dress rehearsal to watch. “I loved every minute of it,” Hayes said. “It was my gift to the community.” Hayes said that he hopes the Herricks Players will live for another 40 years, noting that he was happy to see new faces in this fall’s production. “I’m so happy they’re keeping it alive. That’s what I always feared. I was always afraid that when I couldn’t do this anymore that someone would come in and take it and it would only last for two or three years,” Hayes said. Carole Hayes said that she and John want to pass the Herricks Players to the next generation. She joked that if she hadn’t joined the Herricks Players with her husband then she’d never see him because he’d never be home.

my Bombay childhood,â€? she says, adding that her paintings combine the imagery of the past with her role in America today. “Many blue-skinned characters populate my paintings‌becoming symbols of a timeless global identity free of prejudices and boundaries.â€? D’Innocenzo to rate TV’s winning magician America’s presidents Mike Super at Adelphi Professor Michael D’Innocenzo will be guest in the pulpit at Temple Emanuel’s Sabbath Eve Service on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. His talk is entitled: “Rating America’s Presidents 1789-2016.” As we head toward the 2020 elections, it’s worth looking back at the performance of past presidents. How and why have presidential ratings changed over many decades – from Parson Weems (1799), to NYU’s “Hall of Great Americans” (1900), to A.M. Schlesinger’s first historians’ poll (1948), to CSpan’s third major analysis (2019)? Which presidents have risen in the ratings, which have declined, and why? Michael D’Innocenzo, professor emeritus of History at Hofstra University, and recipient of the 2008 American Historical Association National College Teacher of the Year Award, participated in one of the rating exercises, an acclaimed study, Rating The Presidents (editors: William J. Riding and Stuart B. McIver). Drawing, also, on Fred Greenstein’s book, The Presidential Difference, Mike will invite folks to consider the changing roles of American presi-

Professor Michael D’Innocenzo will be guest speaker at Emanuel dents and how they can be assessed. How would you rate the presidents? Professor D’Innocenzo received the American Historical Association Eugene Asher National Distinguished Teaching Award in 2009. During 59 years at Hofstra University, D’Innocenzo served as both a Professor of History and The Harry H. Wachtel Distinguished Teaching Professor for the Study of Nonviolent Social Change. He has degrees from Columbia University (where he was a Danforth Scholar and an Edward John Noble Leadership Fellow) and

from Union College (where he was recognized with the Freling Smith Prize for outstanding history thesis, and received the Bailey Prize for outstanding senior service). Temple Emanuel’s SCW Friday Night Speaker program is funded in part by Elaine & George Malin. CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Town civil fights doc to screen at film fest North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, announced today that the Town-produced documentary Defining Moments: The Civil Rights Movement in North Hempstead, is part of the slate of films being shown at this year’s 2019 Gold Coast International Film Festival. The film will be shown on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Soundview Cinema in Port Washington. The event is free and opened to the public and will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s participants. The documentary

highlights the stories related to the African American struggle for equality in the 20th Century during the Civil Rights Movement in North Hempstead. North Hempstead was at the epicenter of major triumphs of human rights as well as inequalities during this tumultuous time. “We are thrilled to be part of the prestigious Gold Coast International Film Festival and to share this important film with everyone,” said North Hempstead Town Supervisor Bosworth. “The film provides a first-hand account of how local people here in North Hempstead,

@TheIslandNow

fought against bigotry and inequality and changed the world for the better.” Guest speakers invited for the film screening include North Hempstead Supervisor Bosworth; Port Washington resident Marge Rogatz; Mineola resident Bernice Sims; Westbury resident Bernice Roberts; Dr. Hazel Dukes, formerly of Roslyn; and filmmaker Alan Ginsberg, formerly of Great Neck and other participants in the film. The film is directed by NHTV Studio Director & LIXI Studios President Alan Ginsberg and was funded by a grant from the National Park Service (NPS). The 40-minute documentary represents nearly two years of research, interviews, filming and editing. In addition to the documentary, individual “oral histories” of more than a dozen North Hempstead residents who had a role in the Civil Rights Movement are available for viewing at https://www. mynhtv.com/civilrights For information about the film event, contact the Town’s 311 Call Center at 516-869-6311 or see https://bit.ly/2IHECgc
