A conversation with Women’s leadership George Will at temple conference on Nov. 2 The eighth season of Stephen C. Widom Cultural Arts at Emanuel begins on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 3:00 p.m., with a conversation between George F. Will and NY1 anchor Errol Louis. George F. Will is among today’s most widely read columnists. His newspaper column has been syndicated by The Washington Post since 1974. Today, it appears twice weekly in approximately 500 newspapers in the United States and in Europe. In addition, he currently serves as a contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. In 1976, he became a regular contributing editor of Newsweek magazine, for which he provided a bimonthly essay until 2011.

In 1977, he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary for his newspaper columns. Altogether eight collections of Will’s Newsweek and Washington Post columns have been published, the most recent being One Man’s America. In addition, he has published several best-selling books on baseball. For 32 years, beginning as a founding member in 1981, he was a panelist on ABC television’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Will was born in Champaign, Illinois, educated at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., Oxford University and Princeton University, where he earned his doctor of philosophy degree. He has taught political philosophy at Michigan State University and the University of Toronto. Will served as a staff member in the United States Senate from 1970 to 1972. From 1973 through 1976, he was the Washington editor of National Review magazine. Today, Will lives and works in Washington. Will’s recently published book, “The Conservative Sensibility,” has been called an “astonishing” and “enthralling” (Booklist) new examination of how the Founders’ belief in natural rights created a great American political tradition—”easily one of the best books on American Conservatism ever written” (Jonah Goldberg). Speakers at Adelphi’s Women’s Leadership Conference: Neha Gandhi and Dottie Herman Adelphi University will hold its third annual Women’s Leadership Conference on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Garden City Hotel from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adelphi invites all members of the community to a day full of panels and table discussions providing hands-on leadership training and exclusive professional development. The conference will feature two major keynote speakers. The breakfast speaker is Dottie Herman, CEO of Douglas Elliman Real Estate LLC and the “Richest Self-Made Woman In Real Estate” according to Forbes. An Adelphi alumna, she was a President’s Gala honoree in 2007 and affectionately claims Adelphi as her home. The lunch keynote speaker is Neha Gandhi, editor in chief and chief oper-
ating officer at Girlboss. Prior to Girlboss, she was the senior vice president of content strategy and innovation at Refinery29and held editor positions at Harper’s Bazaar, Seventeen and more. “The Women’s Leadership Conference is important because it allows Adelphi to provide leadership training and professional development to all Panthers– students, alumni, and friends,” said Jodie Serpico, executive director of Alumni Relations. Co-hosted by Adelphi’s Center for Career and Professional Development and the Office of Alumni Relations, the conference is centered around the theme “Becoming Your Most Powerful Self.” The topics include leadership across the generations, money management, resiliency and more. Last year, more than 250 Adelphi alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends participated in the half-day program, which included breakout panels and a networking roundtable luncheon that will be incorporated in this year’s conference. ‘Salt Water People’ play reading Nov. 3 As part of the Waterfront Heroes exhibit, celebrating those who preserve New York’s maritime heritage, Long Island Traditions is proud to present a staged reading of “Salt Water People” by American Lore Theater at the Oyster Bay Historical Society on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. The play, by Jake Rosenberg, loosely based on Peter Matthiessen’s book, “Men’s Lives,” focuses on the plight of the Baymen of Long Island, and of the Bonackers, descendants of the oldest European settlers on Long Island, and their unique and
rapidly fading American English dialect. “Salt Water People spins the legend of the 12th Generation Bonacker Bayman Chris King, and his final fishing trip with his son, Danny. When Chris, struggling with the pressures of losing his wife, his home, his boat, and his source of income catches a mystical creature from the depths of his past, he must choose which he’d rather lose: his son or his mind,” says the play’s creator, Jake Rosenberg. To prepare for the Nov. 3 show, American Lore The-
ater members spent time learning from experienced local Baymen including Oyster Bay bayman Bill Fetzer, listening to archival recordings, and reading historical documents. The show will feature Trevor Jones, Thomas Hedlund, Juliana Sass, Allison Boenig, Ruthie Ofrasio, and Jac Bernhard. The play reading is part of the Waterfront Heroes exhibit, on display at the Oyster Bay Historical Society until Nov. 3. Curated by Long Island Traditions, City Lore, and folklorists Naomi Sturm and Dan Ward, the exhibit celebrates unique folk artists and tradition bearers from Staten Island, New York City’s outer boroughs, and Long Island. Farmingdale to screen town doc about civil rights North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, in partnership with Farmingdale State College and Distinguished Teaching Professor of Sociology Dr. Miriam K. Deitsch, have announced that the town-produced documentary “Defining Moments: The Civil Rights Movement in North Hempstead,” will be shown on Thursday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at the College’s Campus Center Ballroom as part of a special event sponsored by the College’s Social Science Research Institute’s Center for Social Justice. The event is free and open to the public. The documentary highlights the stories related to the African American
struggle for equality in the 20th Century during the Civil Rights Movement in North Hempstead. North Hempstead was at the epicenter of major triumphs of human rights as well as inequalities during this tumultuous time. “This film provides a wonderful opportunity for us to preserve the stories of the Civil Rights Movement and for the young people of today to hear a first-hand account of how these people stood up against bigotry and changed the world for the better,” said Bosworth. Guest speakers invited for the film screening include North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth; Marge Rogatz, Bernice Sims, Rabbi Jerome Davidson;
Bernice Roberts, Dr. Hazel Dukes and filmmaker Alan Ginsberg and other participants in the film who shared their stories for the film about that tumultuous time in our Country’s history. They will be lead in a Q&A session after the film by Deitsch, who has been a member of the Farmingdale faculty since 1977. Deitsch is the director of the Social Science Research Institute, Center for Social Justice, Center for Civic Engagement and Service and Center for Information in the Public Interest. “I have always passionately believed that studying Black History should not be designated to the shortest month of the year, but rather should be studied and
celebrated all year round, as we are doing here with the viewing of this important film,” said Deitsch. “I hope the film’s message of struggle, hope and courage will inspire the students who see it and that they will take up the cause of social equity and justice into the future.” In addition, the film’s participants will all be inducted into the Social Justice Distinguished Scholar Academy, of the Social Science Research Institute at Farmingdale State College, in recognition of their commitment to social equity and justice.
