Irrational thoughts are unhealthy We all have our concerns. Dire or trivial these issues weigh us down. They take up space. We may not reflect on them every day but they certainly cross our minds and when they do we may feel negative emotions: depression, frustration, remorse, regret, shame or embarrassment. It is healthy to express strong emotions when something goes wrong in your life and should be encouraged. It is part of the healing process. But what if those emotions are damaging? What if they compound our problems and make them worse? If someone were to experience a loss of a relationship or loss of job, we would likely expect this person to feel sadness. Such an emotion would be appropriate for these circumstances. However, what if this person’s feelings deteriorated into depression that caused him to isolate and turn away from the people who would love and

support him? What if this depression crippled her motivation to pursue a new job? Would these emotions be rational? According to the rational emotive behavior therapy framework, a rational belief is preferential — i.e., non-absolute — in nature and is expressed in the form of a desire, wish, want or like. “I wish the circumstances concerning my job were different.” These beliefs are considered rational because they are flexible — we accept that we don’t always get what we want) and they don’t impede us in the attainment of our goals. “Losing my job was bad, but not terrible. I don’t like it, but I can deal with it and find another job.” On the other hand, irrational beliefs are expressed in the rigid form of musts, shoulds, oughts, and so on. “The life I live must absolutely be the way I want it to be, and if it isn’t I’ll be miserable, poor me.” “I must be successful and

JEREMY SKOW approved of by others, and if I’m not, then I can’t be happy.” Irrational beliefs tend to lead to inappropriate negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, shame and anger. They are inappropriate for three reasons: 1. they cause the individual to experience a great deal of pain and discomfort; 2. they can motivate someone to engage in self-defeating behavior; 3. they can impede someone from carrying out behaviors necessary to reach their goals. Our goal for happier living would therefore be realized

by minimizing our irrational thoughts. Awareness is the first step toward cleaning out your emotional closet. The more you are aware of your torment-creating irrational thoughts, feelings and behaviors, the more successful you will be at getting rid of them. It might be easy to recognize if you are severely anxious or depressed. Recognizing the appropriateness of these emotions may be much harder. The next step involves actively disputing your irrational beliefs. When you are irrational you oppose reason and refuse to accept things for the way they truly are. Where is the proof that I am unattractive to others because I lost my job? Where is the evidence that the loss of my job indicates I am incompetent and unlikely to ever experience success again? The third step is based on the rational emotive behavior therapy theory that we have the ability to change our thoughts and feelings by acting against them.

Thoughts, feelings and behaviors are believed to interact and affect each other. Crazy ideas lead to frantic feelings and strange acts. Frenzied feelings bring on foolish notions and behaviors. Rash actions cause bizarre convictions and delirious emotions. The fear of a pool might only be overcome if you actively decide to test the waters. Forcing yourself to keep doing what you are afraid of has the potential of ridding you of your irrational fears. This spring inventory your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Make an effort to challenge yourself when you’re being irrational. Focus on behaviors that are consistent with your goals and live happier. UNDERSTANDING VEIN DISEASE by Dr. Mark Schwartz MD, FACS, RPVI

Vein disease is a common ailment that affects 30% to 50% of the adult U.S. population. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, superficial blood clots, skin changes and even ulcer formation on the lower extremities. With awareness, however, symptoms can be caught at an early stage and treatments as well as preventative measures can be taken. Typically, women are often more affected than men, but men present with more severe symptoms including skin changes and ulcer formation. A series of one-way valves control the actual flow of the blood in the veins. When valves malfunction and fail to operate properly, disease may develop. In this case, it may allow blood to leak or flow backwards especially in the lower extremities. This backward flow, called venous reflux, is what precipitates symptoms. These symptoms arise from an elevated blood pressure in the veins and may be referred to as venous hypertension. This process leads to an intense inflammatory process both in the vein wall and valves as well as the skin and underlying healthy tissue. Spider veins and varicose veins are two of the more common vein problems in which people are typically more familiar. Spider veins lie just below the skin’s surface and usually appear as red or blue blotches. They are typically not dangerous and are simply cosmetic in nature. Varicose veins also lie just below the

Neuropsychological Evaluation

Oh, how do I love thee, Massage? Let me count the ways! Having practiced as a licensed massage therapist for the past seven years, I could get into how it activates the parasympathetic nervous system (you know the rest and relax to the sympathetic’s fight or flight?) which helps lower blood pressure, increase circulation, etc, but the technical aspect, though fascinating, could get boring really fast. So, I’d rather tell you about why I love it from my point of view. Massage is the conversation that a therapist has with the musculature of the human body that helps relax and figure out what is going on by mapping out the connections between muscles, their attachments and the network of neighboring muscle groups. There is nothing like getting a great massage after a long week- especially when that week has been particularly grueling and the mental gymnastics are abuzz.

Massage is my time to recharge and unwind. Time with my therapist is space for my zen and peace. In the most adept of hands, massage is like venting to a good friend who just KNOWS how to listen. The lightness that ensues is akin to that of a revelatory conversation- through the work of skilled therapists, one can come to understand how that tension headache came about and “Whoa! I hadn’t noticed that the tightness in my right hip was connecting up to my neck and contributing to that headache!” There’s something so gratifying and peaceful about engaging in this “chat” that helps me slow down, reflect and possibly even realize aspects of myself- body, mind and spiritthat I may not have noticed otherwise. And it’s all connected! And so, thank you, Massage, for helping me get back to me. See you soon!

It’s Never Too Late To Get Healthy Who We Are… Dr. Gail Stevens opened Chiropractic Health Center, in Mineola, in 1995. In addition to Chiropractic services, Chiropractic Health Center offers massage therapy, acupuncture, graston therapy, cupping, and custom orthotics. In December of 2003, additional space became available in the same building and, Dr. Stevens' and her sister, Debbie Krzyminski, opened Fitness Figures, hoping to make healthy living a part of their client's lives. Fitness Figures started out as a 30-minute circuit training center. Over the years specialty classes such as Yoga, Pilates, TRX, Zumba, Stretch, Body Conditioning, and Core Strength were added. The great thing about these classes, that you won't find in a larger gym, is the size of the class. Classes are typically under 10 people. Each student has the full attention of the instructor. Debbie teaches many classes herself. She has certifica-

tions in Zumba, TRX, Pound, Pilates and has been boxing for close to 10 years. Also added were personal training sessions. Over the years, Debbie's clients have included people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities such as hip, knee and shoulder replacements, amputee's, teens with emotional issues, and hearing and sight impairments. An aim of Fitness Figures is to provide an environment where everyone is working toward the common goal of getting healthy. In 2009, Dr. Ronal Stevens, a board certified cardiologist, joined his sisters and Advanced Cardiology was born. In addition to Cardiology, other services include a drug rehab referral program. The three siblings have been working on creating a Comprehensive Wellness Center to address all the health needs of their patients and clients. Services planned in the future will include physical therapy and Doula

How Can I Tell If I Have Glaucoma? What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, causing permanent vision loss. Most commonly, the damage occurs when your eye’s internal fluid pressure rises too high. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the U.S. What causes glaucoma? The exact cause of glaucoma is not known. For some reason, the passages that normally allow fluid within your eye become clogged or blocked. Fluid within your eye builds up and increases pressure on the optic nerve. The nerve fibers and blood vessels in the optic nerve are easily damaged by this pressure, resulting in vision loss. An injury, infection or tumor in or around the eye can also cause the pressure to rise. People who have glaucoma with normal eye pressure likely have poor blood flow to the optic nerve. Who gets glaucoma? Glaucoma most frequently occurs in individuals over the age of 40. In some families, the disease is hereditary. It is estimated that over 2 million Americans have glaucoma, and this number is expected to rise as the U.S. population ages. How is glaucoma harmful to vision? The optic nerve, at the back of the eye,

carries visual information to the brain. As the optic nerve fibers are damaged, the amount and quality of information sent to the brain decreases and a loss of vision occurs. Will I go blind from glaucoma? If diagnosed at an early stage, glaucoma can often be controlled with little or no further vision loss. If left untreated, first peripheral vision and then central vision will be affected, and blindness may result. How Is glaucoma detected? A comprehensive optometric examination will include tests for glaucoma. A simple, painless procedure called tonometry measures the internal pressure of your eye. Health of the optic nerve and your field of vision will be checked. How is glaucoma treated? Glaucoma is usually effectively treated with prescription eye drops and medicines that must be taken regularly. Some cases require laser therapy or surgery. Will my vision be restored after treatment? No. But early detection and treatment can control glaucoma and reduce the chances of vision loss.

Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age

M

aintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and

women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid

strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.

holistic nursing

N

urses wear many hats. In addition to tending to patients and helping families of patients, nurses incorporate the latest technologies into patients’ treatment. Some even work outside of hospitals and doctor’s offices to train the next generation of nurses. Nursing has also branched out to include holistic nursing, which employs alternative medicine to care for patients. Alternative medicine is sometimes combined with traditional western medicine, requiring holistic nurses, who are sometimes referred to as “complementary health nurses,” understand both holistic and traditional nursing methods. According to the Campaign for Nursing’s Future, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, holistic nursing is rooted in the idea that nurses cannot treat a patient’s physical health without addressing the whole person. In addition to addressing their patients’ physical problems, holistic nurses will also try to address their patients’ mental, spiritual and emotional well-being. Holistic nursing is a growing field, and it’s entirely possible that the role of holistic nurses will expand in the years to come. Some of the things today’s holistic nurses do include: • acupuncture • assisting patients with managing stress • aromatherapy • massage • hypnosis, hydrotherapy and balneotherapy • Chinese and Eastern healing practices • wellness coaching ADDITIONAL SCHOOL HOLIDAY PUBLIC SESSIONS FOR THANKSGIVING. Recognize and prevent repetitive stress injuries

R

epetitive stress injuries, or RSIs, can impact muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Though The Mayo Clinic estimates that three million people in the United States are affected by such injuries, some may not fully understand just how they reached a point where they are suffering from an RSI. RSIs are a condition that occurs when too much stress is placed on one part of the body, typically a joint, over and over again, resulting in inflammation and potential tissue damage. RSIs typically happen when a person repeats the same movements again and again. It comes as no surprise then that RSIs are commonly experienced by athletes and office workers. The elderly are most affected by RSIs, but these types of injuries are also known to occur in younger adults and children. These injuries tend to develop over time and tend go unnoticed in their early stages. Prevention is the best defense against RSIs. Start by using proper equipment at all times to help keep the body protected and in neutral positions. Such equipment may include support devices for wrists or knees, and shoes that fit well and provide ample support. Athletes should make sure their gear is properly sized to their bodies. Using the wrong size tennis racket, for example, may contribute to elbow strain when serving and hitting. Proper nutrition also is key. Consuming the right foods is essential to developing and maintaining strong

muscles, which help support joints in the body. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist if you suspect your diet has room for improvement. RSIs can be troublesome for office workers. Maintaining neutral body positioning is the best defense against pain and injury, according to the pain prevention resource Tifaq.com. Tifaq.com suggests following these procedures in addition to stretching and exercising at the office: • Keep your head level, forward facing and in line with your torso. • Feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest. • Shoulders can be relaxed and arms hanging normally at your sides. Your elbows should be at about 90-degree angles. • Support your back with a lumbar support or a small pillow. • Sit vertically or lean back slightly while at your desk. • Keep frequently used items close by so you do not need to stretch. • Position your monitor so it is directly in front of you and at eye level. • Take frequent breaks to stretch or take a walk around the office. Examples of RSIs include carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, tendinitis, and trigger finger. Always consult with a doctor if pain from routine activities is persistent. Individuals may benefit from working with a physical therapist to learn strategies to avoid RSI activities.

How occupational therapy can help chronic pain sufferers

M

Chronic pain sufferers can benefit from working with occupational therapists.

illions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain every year, and the effects of that pain extend far and wide. While pain sufferers understandably focus their attention on treating their conditions, it’s important for all people to recognize the nonphysical burdens pain places on people as well. Estimates vary regarding the overall financial burden of chronic pain on healthcare systems, but numerous studies have suggested the overall costs are in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars every year. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine estimated that pain costs American society as much as $635 billion every year, a figure that includes both the costs associated with treating pain and the money forfeited to lost productivity. The costs of chronic pain are substantial in Canada as well. Though the population of Canada is just 35 million (compared to nearly 320 million in the United States), a

2010 report estimated the costs associated with chronic pain and lost productivity and sick days in Canada to be around $37 billion annually. Chronic pain can be uncomfortable and costly, but there are ways to manage the effects of chronic pain and lead an active, productive life. Occupational therapy is one way for chronic pain sufferers to combat their conditions and improve their quality of life.

What is occupational therapy? According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, occupational therapists and their assistants utilize everyday activities to help chronic pain sufferers participate in the things they want to do and need to do, including work.

What can occupational therapists do? Chronic pain sufferers rely on occupational therapists in various ways. Occupational therapists may identify the cause of their patients’ pain, suggesting alternatives to activities or behaviors that aggravate that pain. Such identification may include evaluations of patients’ homes and work environments. Occupational therapists also

teach methods for decreasing the frequency and duration of painful episodes. This may include adapting environments that tend to trigger pain. For example, if an office environment is identified as the cause of the pain or a primary trigger, occupation therapists can recommend adjustments and equipment to make that environment less conducive to pain. Occupational therapists also teach clients how to use the equipment so their pain decreases while they perform necessary tasks, such as those associated with their jobs. Many occupational therapists work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals who are treating their clients. This cooperation can help to determine the ideal course of treatment and may help patients hesitant to treat their conditions with medication find other avenues to overcome their chronic pain. Chronic pain is a potentially formidable foe that affects millions of people across the globe. Chronic pain sufferers can learn more about the role occupational therapists can play in combating their conditions by visiting www. aota.org.

Anger in America leads to health woes Continued from Page 49 Trump promises a big wall to hold us all together, to keep intruders away and to re-establish an American identity. Shaky times for America and I have never seen such political interest. This seems even more sinister and more important than the cultural revolutions of the late 1960s.

Maybe that’s the way it ought to be. It’s been said that this revolution is a backlash to the cultural changes that began in the 1960s. We’ve all been wondering when things will begin to get better. We all know there is too much road rage, too many school shootings, too much competition, too much overwork, too much drug use, too much exhaustion, too

much illness and too much malaise. The pharmaceutical industry and the social media industry are just about the only industries that seem to be thriving. So let us pray there will be real change, real growth and real connection in our homes and towns. Who would have guessed that a man called Donald Trump would be needed to bring some hope and some peace to

our land. And if he succeeds I guarantee that we will slowly begin to see less use of medication, less illness, less alcoholism, less obesity and more of a sense of community. My guess is that America is looking for some spiritual light leading us out of our current malaise. But until that light comes along we may have to settle for a new president.
