Here are some things we would like you to know about Notre Dame School… We pray together each morning as a school community and attend Mass on the First Friday of each month. We celebrate liturgical seasons in a variety of ways. During the seasons of Advent and Lent, we begin our week with a special prayer service. Students in grades Kindergarten through Grade Five participate in the Christmas and Spring Show. Students in PKGrade 2 participate in a winter concert. Students in grades One through Eight may enjoy music lessons and Honor Band through Paul Effman. In music class, students learn to play the recorder and xylophone, and sing at School Masses. We also have a school choir who sing at prayer services and school masses. Our students are proficient in most aspects of Microsoft Office. They use a variety of presentation
tools including PowerPoint and Prezi, along with Movie Maker. They build boats, hot air balloons and robotic arms and work with the Cad Pro program to design a better school environment. Our newest initiative for Pre-k-Grade 6 involves the integration of STEM based units. Our Art teacher includes different artists, cultures and literature into her classes. Our Physical Education teacher plays all kinds of games, teaches important skills, teaches Health to grades Five through Eight and stresses good sportsmanship. At Notre Dame we create a rich, powerful connection between students and reading by inviting authors to our school.
We have 3 book fairs a year. These are family events that support the reading development of children. Our students enjoy a lunch program that features both hot and cold items, along with snacks and drinks. All students from PK through Grade 8 work on computers and SmartBoards. Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 enjoy the annual Notre Dame Picnic, compete at Blue and White events, participate in Liturgies all through the year as Leaders of Song, readers, and altar servers, go on curriculum –related field trips, shop at the Christmas and Spring Boutique and love dressdown days!
We are proud to announce that we have 100% acceptance into Catholic High Schools. Our current eighth grade students were awarded more than $715,000.00 in scholarships!
We have a full time Art teacher, as well as a full time Technology teacher, Physical Education teacher and librarian. Our Spanish and Music teachers are part-time. Grades K and 1 have Italian classes during the school day and students in Grades 2 may participate after school. Students in grades 3-8 study Spanish. We also have a Drama Club for Grades 4-8 that produces an annual theatrical performance. We offer a variety of Enrichment Programs after school during the Spring and Fall, including Chess Club. Morning-Care is available for those students in Nursery and PK, and after-care is available until 6:00PM from students in PK through Grade 8. Although our day begins at 8:10, students may be dropped off at 7:30 AM.

Creating a helpful homework atmosphere for your children Choose the right location for the homework room. When choosing an area of your home where kids will do their homework, avoid rooms adjacent to the kitchen and living room, as these rooms tend to be popular and subject to heavy foot traffic. But don’t choose a room that’s too far away from the hustle and bustle, such as the basement, as that may make kids feel as though they are being punished. In addition, you want to be able to periodically check in on kids to see if they need help and make sure they aren’t spending their homework time surfing the Internet or procrastinating.

lassrooms conducive to learning may go a long way toward helping students understand the subjects they study in school, but the environment kids encounter at home also plays a big role in how well kids do in their studies. A homework-friendly atmosphere at home can facilitate learning, and there are many ways parents can create such an environment for their school-aged children.
Designate a homework zone in a distraction-free area of your home. Some youngsters are easily distracted, and those distractions come in many forms. A living room where the television is blaring, a noisy kitchen where dinner is being prepared and a room where pets can roam free are not ideal homework areas, as each can take kids’ attention away from their assignments. Designate a room in your home that is quiet and well lit so kids can do their homework free from distraction.
Keep the homework room clean. A cluttered homework room may be less appealing to children, and such disorganization also can distract kids from the tasks at hand. Encourage kids to keep their homework rooms clean, and help them clean up if need be. Supplies and other items kids need should be easily accessible in the homework room so kids are not wasting time looking for items they need to complete their homework.
Let kids rest or relax before starting their homework. Another element of a good homework atmosphere is letting kids unwind between getting home from school and cracking open the books. A break between school and homework time can help kids focus better on their studies. In the interim between arriving home from school and starting on their homework, give kids a healthy snack that can provide an extra jolt of energy they can use once they start their homework. Evaluate how the homework zone is working. Once an ample amount of time has passed, examine how kids are performing on their homework assignments. If they are doing well, then there is no reason to break up the current routine. If they are struggling, ask them if there is anything about the current setup they dislike and address those issues accordingly. Kids rarely look forward to doing their homework. But the right atmosphere can make homework seem like less of a chore and more of an opportunity for kids to apply themselves.

A cappella groups to The Art Guild of Port perform at Adelphi to host juried contest Professional a cappella groups from around the world will perform with collegiate and high school groups at the SingStrong International A Cappella Festival from Feb. 10 to 12 at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center located at 1 South Ave. in Garden City. SingStrong Inc. is a public charity and this marks its 14th a cappella festival. The all-vocal event consists of five concerts and two days of classes and coachings, all featuring nothing but the human voice. Event profits support charity, with a silent auction to benefit the fight against Alzheimer’s, and other proceeds supporting music programs with a special focus on singing and a cappella music. SingStrong kicks off on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., with “ACA-IDOL,” an a cappella competition for semi-professional and collegiate groups in the style of “The X-Factor,” “America’s Got Talent,” and “American Idol.” Celebrity judges give live feedback on the performers’ 10-minute sets, while audience members vote for their favorites from their cell phones. The first prize is $1,000. The SingStrong matinee concert on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. features a high school competition with awards for performance and arranging and composition, as judged by respected a cappella educators. Single Singers, an open group that anyone can join, will also perform. Saturday night features two SingStrong main event concerts, each with its own lineup of professional a cappella groups.
The 7 p.m. concert includes Denmark’s Postyr, New York’s Blue Jupiter with Diana Preisler, and Connecticut’s Connect. The 9:30 p.m. concert includes Stiletta, Fii, Zulal and Backtrack. A silent auction to benefit the fight against Alzheimer’s will take place between the Saturday night concerts. SingStrong’s Sunday matinee concert at 2 p.m. features more new professional a cappella groups as well as encore performances from Saturday evening, including Greater Nassau Chorus, Postyr, Connect, Zulal, Fii, Backtrack and more. Throughout Saturday and Sunday, SingStrong will present two days of classes on such topics as stage presence, forming and directing an a cappella group, beatboxing, vocal health, and musical arranging. From beginners to pros, these classes are designed to help anyone interested in a cappella take their skills to the next level. Participating a cappella groups will also enjoy free private coaching with their weekend passes. Tickets range from $20 to $35 and weekend passes are available for as low as $75. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups of ten or more. AUPAC is one of Long Island’s premier cultural arts venues for entertainment of all kinds. Town, art groups to host juried arts contest The Town of North Hempstead along with the North Hempstead Arts Advisory Council and The Art Guild of Port Washington, are pleased to announce that the town will be holding its second Arts Matter! juried art contest and exhibit. The theme of this contest is multicultural aspects of the Town of North Hempstead. The entries will be accepted until Feb. 13, and the exhibit will be on display at Town Hall in Manhasset from Feb. 28 to April 28. In order to enter, you must be a resident of the Town of North Hempstead, an employee of a business located in the Town, or a member of an arts organization within the Town. All artists must be 18 years or older. Any artwork submitted must be available from Feb. 27 to May 1 and
must have been completed in the past three years. Each artist may submit up to three artworks per entry. The cost per entry is $25. All entries must be submitted by Feb. 13. The Art Guild invites all artists to enter “Works On Paper,” a juried competition and exhibition. All styles are welcome. Works must have a paper (or synthetic paper) substrate. Mediums may include but are not limited to acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, ink, dyes, pencil (graphite or colored), charcoal, marker, mixed media, collage, encaustic, etching/prints or sculpture with pedestal. All artists, 18 years and older (high school students ages 14-18 years may enter in the student category), are invited to submit up to three works for consideration. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Feb. 10. A prospectus can be downloaded at TheArtGuild.org. Juror of Awards: Award winning artist Kyle Blumenthal’s life is steeped in art. From a very early age, she immersed herself in art books, art prints and art works. Her father was a sculptor and served as her first teacher. Her paintings of international conductors and soloists at Lincoln Center have won her critical acclaim. Her exhibits in the greater New York area and on Long Island have earned high praise. She has taken special awards at the Sodarco Gallery in Montreal several times. Her commercial illustrations have been used by Panasonic, CBS, ABC and NY News One. In addition to creating art, Kyle is a teacher and mentor, especially teaching
students in college and high school. The exhibit will be on view at The Art Guild’s home, Elderfields Preserve, 200 Port Washington Blvd. in Manhasset from March 4 to April 2. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. An Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 5 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Classes for children and adults run year-round and include Drawing for Beginners and Intermediates, Landscape Painting for Beginners and Intermediates, Watercolor for Beginners or Intermediates, The Still Life in Oil, and Life Drawing from the Model (non-instructional). Sip & Sketch, a non-instructional drawing session with a live model, meets on the second Thursday evening of every month. Please RSVP for the next session (Feb. 9). An Advanced Studio for High School Students begins Feb. 9. A workshop, Watercolor with Joyce Hicks, is scheduled for June 22-25. My Morning Jacket Singer-songwriter to play Forest Hills duo to play in series My Morning Jacket will return this summer, playing its first-ever show at the historic Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on July 15. The concert will be the band’s only New York City performance of 2017. Special guest Gary Clark Jr. will open. Tickets are currently on sale at ForestHillsStadium.com. For decades, the stadium at the West Side Tennis Club was not only host of the U.S. Open, it was also a renowned music venue — hosting concerts by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and other legendary artists. When the U.S. Open moved to larger space in 1977, the architecturally stunning, horseshoe-shaped Forest Hills Stadium fell into disrepair and its days as a music venue faded. In 2013, concert promoters partnered with the West Side Tennis Club to rehabilitate the stadium and bring incredible events back to this storied venue.

Singer-songwriters Jon Shain and Jessy Tomsko will be the featured performers during the monthly Hard Luck Café series at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 8:30 p.m. Shain is a veteran singer-songwriter and guitarist who’s been turning heads for years with his words, his fiery acoustic guitar work, and his evolved musical style--combining improvised Piedmont blues with bluegrass, swing, and ragtime. His newest disc, a duet album with Joe Newberry entitled “Crow the Dawn,” was released in January 2016. Shain grew up in Haverhill, Mass., and resides in Durham, N.C. In addition to recording and performing, Shain — whose work touches on the trials and tribulations of regular people, as well as themes of social justice — teaches Piedmont blues guitar and leads songwriting workshops. Known for her catchy yet genuine and confessional style, Tomsko is a versatile vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and composer. Although writing and performing primarily in the ever-expanding “folk” genre, she first began experimenting with songwriting while attending a conservatory and earning a music degree in classical voice performance. Her roots in classical music and musical theater provided Tomsko with a solid musical foundation and inspired her along the way to finding her own voice.

Established in 1973, Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre (www.cinemaartscentre.org) seeks to bring the best of cinematic artistry to Long Island and use the power of film to expand the awareness and consciousness of our community. LI’s only not-for-profit, viewer-supported, independent cinema presents a wide array of films that are often accompanied by discussions and guest speakers. The Cinema Arts Centre is located at 423 Park Ave. in Huntington. Shain and Tomsko’s concert will take place in the Cinema’s Sky Room and will be preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale: $15 for the general public and $10 for Cinema Arts Centre and Folk Music Society of Huntington members, and will be available at the door. Now in its 48th year, the Folk Music Society of Huntington presents two monthly concert series, a monthly folk jam and an annual folk festival in conjunction with the Huntington Arts Council. Its First Saturday Concerts series at the Congregational Church of Huntington (30 Washington Drive, off Route 25A, Centerport) will feature Joe Crookston and take place on March 4.
