Police urge temples to up security

Town holds forum to address concerns about hate crimes BY K R I ST Y O ’ C ON N E LL Nassau County police oďŹƒcials encouraged religious leaders last Thursday to increase security at their facilities in response to concerns about hate crimes. The oďŹƒcials spoke at a forum at North Hempstead Town Hall in Manhasset that the town held to address concerns that many residents have had about recent messages of hate and anti-Semitism. “There is no room in our town for anti-tolerance, messages of hate and anti-Semitism,â€? town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said. “And it’s up to us to say ‘no, not here.’â€? Inspector Daniel Flanagan, commanding oďŹƒcer of Nassau County’s 3rd Police Precinct, said hate crimes in the county are down this year compared with the same period last year, though the precinct has responded to concerns and increased patrols at houses of worship. Flanagan also said that the Po-

lice Department takes hate crime very seriously and delegates investigative duties to its Biased Crimes Unit, which is internationally recognized. “Any school or house of worship should have its own security,â€? he said. Police oďŹƒcers Daniel Hedgecock and Henry Krukowski of the Police Department’s Problem-Oriented Police unit said police can help improve community facilities to become more secure by surveying them for vulnerabilities and aws. Krukowski said police oďŹƒcers do this through a “security survey,â€? which they complete with written recommendations. “It’s a major operation,â€? Krukowski said. “But we will do it with each and every one of your congregations.â€?
