erson-centred care is a buzz phrase that’s been circulating the aged care sector for a while now. It’s a model of care that strives to achieve a personalised approach to supporting the real care needs of an individual, whilst promoting a collaborative approach to a resident’s holistic care. That means you need detailed information about the person you’re caring for, says Amanda Sweeney Amanda Sweeney – service operations and reporting manager at Mission Australia’s Centre for Evidence and Insights. “To deliver person-centred care, you have to have the right information available at your fingertips,” Sweeney tells Australian Ageing Agenda. And that’s where AlayaCare Residential custom configuration and flexible design comes into play. AlayaCare Residential is a portable allin-one clinical information system that provides staff and care delivery teams with real-time access to residents’ data anytime, from any location. “It captures enriched information so that we can tailor our care delivery based on the clinical needs of that resident,” says Sweeney. “I want our staff to be able to pick up the iPad, see that information, be able to easily digest it and then be able to get the insights from that information to tailor the care.” Importantly AlayaCare Residential is a clinical

software product designed specifically for the Australian aged care sector. Another key feature of AlayaCare Residential is its ability to be modified to seamlessly pair with a provider’s existing business practice. “That is what is different about it compared to competitor products I’ve worked with,” says Sweeney. “Normally, you’re locked into a system solution, whereas now we have one that we can continuously tweak and Annette Hili enhance to support our clients and our staff.” This has allowed Mission Australia to configure AlayaCare Residential to support its existing operating model, “rather than creating an operating model around the system we’ve been given,” explains Sweeney. Mission Australia went live with AlayaCare Residential in 2020, and the system is in operation across three of its aged care facilities. The product’s configurability influenced Sweeney’s decision to adopt the platform. “Because it’s so easily configurable, it allows us to capture the data that we require throughout the care journey and to utilise it to deliver highly tailored and responsive care,” she says. When AAA asked how Mission Australia utilises the system, Sweeney replies: “How long have you got?” It is quite a list. “It’s where we do all of our noting, assessments, charting, care planning,

SPONSORED FEATURE and manage our daily tasks,” says Sweeney. “It’s where we manage all of our resident information, like diagnosis, allergies and, importantly, resident preferences. It’s also where we manage all of our hazards and incidents. It’s the cornerstone system for our day-to-day care delivery – it all goes through AlayaCare.” But it’s not just about storing data. “It’s making sure we’re capturing the right information at the right time,” says Sweeney. “And that we’re using that information to develop better reporting analytic capability that allows us to uncover new opportunities, to look at trends, work on improving outcomes and evaluations and respond to customers’ needs in a much more enhanced and timely manner than we’ve been able to in the past.” One of the biggest challenges for aged care staff across the industry is dealing with an increasing amount of record keeping to complete quality indicator reports and show evidence of person-centred care. “Because the system’s configurable, we can embed our compliance and quality requirements into our operating care delivery model in a way that makes it just a part of everyday life rather than making it an administrative burden, a key part of this is having configurable workflows,” says Sweeney. Annette Hili, general manager of AlayaCare Australia and New Zealand, says AlayaCare Residential can assist with a number of reporting requirements including operational, financial, statistical and clinical. “You can establish all sorts of workflows to make sure that the right data is being collected,” Hili tells AAA. “The idea behind the system is that the information is readily available.” Accurate, easily accessible data can also minimise clinical risks, says Hili. “If a resident doesn’t get their insulin or doesn’t have their wound tended to, the clinical risk can escalate quickly.” The reality is – especially amid an acute workforce shortage – aged care staff are busy, says Hili. In these busy times, important things sometimes get overlooked. Fortunately, AlayaCare Residential’s task management function can be utilised to notify and prompt staff to complete care actions whilst providing managers with alerts to monitor this progress. “You can create workflows and event templates

“You can establish all sorts of workflows to make sure that the right data is being collected.”

Benefits: • Accessibility – easy to use and simple to navigate • Time saving – highly efficient workflows, eliminating double entry of data • Customisable – flexible configuration without paying for software code changes • Scalable – scale as you grow without sacrificing application performance • Interoperability – synchronisation to third-party applications • Open API – enabling the integration of existing technology solutions

that align with organisational processes to ensure that the right people are alerted, and allocated the required follow up action,” says Hili. “Anything that may have been inadvertently missed throughout the shift can be tracked, reported on and reassigned. “For example, when a resident incident occurs, there are a number of requirements that need to be actioned. Most importantly the initial care for the residents involved, the subsequent investigation, actions, notifications and documentations. AlayaCare Residential provides a robust way to ensure all of your internal organisational processes and legislative requirements are completed.” AlayaCare Residential is intuitive to its customers’ needs because it has been developed in collaboration with aged care professionals, explains Hili. “We work with and involve our customers in the development and compliance of our product to ensure that it is meeting their needs and meeting their requirements,” she says. “We’ve built it in a way that is much more flexible than older platforms and other products in the market.” As the sector moves toward major reform – “I’d say unprecedented change,” says Sweeney – the platform’s agility allows providers to be far more reactive to an ever-changing aged care landscape. “We can be a lot more innovative and responsive because we’ve got a system that we can adapt and change at the same time as we’re adapting and changing,” says Sweeney. “This is very much the benefit that I see with AlayaCare.” n
