he natural disposition of an average person, when met with a positive outlook on life, is to smile outwardly. While it looks superficial, a simple smile has enormous health impacts on our being. Think of smiling as an innate superpower that can re-purpose the brain’s chemistry into feeling happy and stimulated. While going through the blues is part of life’s difficulties, extended
And no, you can’t just magically wish away someone’s depression by reminding them how pointless it is to continue lamenting in their miseries. Good Things Happen Over Coffee The above adage is true for downplaying the effects of chronic depression in many African American communities. Numerous studies have found that coffee can play a mild role in easing depression. Chinese researchers from the Qingdao University of Medical College published an article inan issue of the prestigious Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry. They collated data from 15 studies and concluded that antioxidants in coffee help to stimulate higher serotonin levels in the brain. Obesity Plays a Huge Role in Depression Unfortunately, obesity is a big issue that predominantly affects African American communities. Obese African American women are more likely to suffer from clinical depression. It fosters the perfect conditions for numerous other mental and physical diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
bouts of depression are a sign of mental illness. A large percentage of Americans - amounting to over 17 million - many of whom are ethnically black, affected by depression. The sadness just doesn’t go away; it is almost as if the mental anguish has been hard-wired into their brains. Not helping proper treatment are myths surrounding depression because many people are of the opinion that depression is a ‘theoretical’ construct of our imagination. Depression harms communities the most when they do not understand the fundamental challenges involved with this mental illness, further pushing it down the proverbial rabbit hole. Some of the most common statements about depression circulating among the African American communities include, “Why are you depressed? Just snap out of it” and “Take your problems to the Church, not some old quack in a clinic.” While spiritual support can play a massive part in the healing process, it doesn’t replace help from qualified mental health professionals. 1 Inspire One
This is a little confusing to read, considering that as of today, quality of life has improved right across the globe[2] not just in the first world. So it makes little sense why illnesses like anxiety and depression are running rampant, in communities of color. In this article, we’ll look at 3 reasons mental health has become such a significant factor within communities of color and the steps taken to improve it. 1) “The bravado must never fail,” Mental illness carries with it the stigma[3]that the person suffering from its many forms is weaker or less of a person. It has already proven that on average, something faces people of color with more difficulty, animosity, prejudice and blockading in their lifetime[4]than non-people of color. Because of this, a sense of “keeping up appearances” has arisen in the community with everybody trying to “act tough.” Nobody wants to admit that things are too difficult to manage and so it hides away mental illnesses. The first steps to dealing with a problem are to admit that there is one in the first place[5]. As a community, as an individual, people must recognize that what they are going through is not healthy and they must take steps towards changing this. Life is hard. Yet history has shown time and time again, within communities of people of color, that the human spirit is harder. Stronger. Able to rise above. For communities to deal with mental illnesses, they must accept that things broken and the pretending must evolve into accepting and fixing. 2) “Racism. Where most things begin and end,” Slavery. Four hundreds of years[6]. This abhorrent stain in human history has caused a trickle of effects still felt today within the black community. The most prevailing being racism. The thing with racism is that it doesn’t just cause a divide it also creates a great mistrust. Within the U.S, there are less than 2% of American Psychological Association members who are black. It is easy to see how with such low visibility of black therapists, some black individuals experiencing a mental illness will refrain from seeking help because of mistrust[7]. There is no real fix for racism. Because it doesn’t need a “fix.”
The Solution? While genes play a role in a person’s health in life, they can say the same about the environment in which people live. The first step toward troubleshooting a problem is first to acknowledge that it exists. It is essential to identify the reasons behind depression; consult your therapist, parents, friends, and family.

Racism isn’t a leaky faucet that just needs a handy solution like tightening a valve. All racism needs are...for racist people to stop being racist. Impossible right? *rolls eyes* So then how do you get access to mental health services if you feel it may object you to racism? Well, the good news is that the average person isn’t racist, and this extends to mental health professionals. The bad news is that there is still the potential of facing racism while trying to get help; though there are many governing bodies[8]you can report any foul proceedings too. There are even organizations like “Therapy For black Girls”[9] which as the name suggests caters care to women of color. 3) “The Miseducation of people of color.” related to point number 1, a big reason mental illness pervades through communities of color is that...well... people can’t see it. There isn’t a shortage of knowledge about mental illness, and while it has become a buzz term, many people do not know how to spot it. All too often mental illness is seenas something clear to the eye, things like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia or OCD. Yet it goes deeper than that. They overlook things like anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder as “normal.” Your friend Janet who sometimes just locks herself away from everybody may need help.Your cousin Omar who acts like a different guy may need help. You. Who must always turn the light off in each room twice before you leave because it’s “just your thing” ... may need help?

lower-income neighborhoods, so you often have to drive out of town for a variety of healthy food options. Most African Americans in these poor neighborhoods don’t have adequate healthcare, but they are eating the most unhealthy foods. The problem is that many black people just don’t realize that being obese is not good for your long-term health. You will often hear the term such as “big boned” or “thick” if you discuss being overweight in the black community. Yes, everyone is built differently, but it supposes nobody to carry around that kind of weight. African Americans are breaking down their bodies when they gain more and more weight due to poor eating choices. Being healthy and fit isn’t a popular celebration in the black community. People of color need to teach their children to think about staying physically active and trying to eat of healthy as possible. Processed foods, sodas, and snacks are the primary food options in low-income communities, but you cannot expect to stay healthy by eating this food regularly. Having a healthy body and lifestyle needs reinforcing in black communities. African Americans suffer from diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure at a much higher rate because of their lack of knowledge about the relationship we must have with food and exercise. To take control of your physical health, seek more fruits and vegetables wherever you go grocery shopping. Going on a 20-minute bike ride each day will keep your body active throughout the week. Making sure your children have access to healthy food options and keeping this busy is very important as a black parent. It’s also essential to make sure you are visiting a medical provider for yearly checkups, to make sure you are in good health. If you want to live for an extended period, you need to take good care of your body. It’s not okay to be overweight and unhealthy. Learning to adopt healthier recipes instead of eating soul food regularly, is very important in the black community. They base your food choices on your cultural background and family tradition, which is the main problem. The Black community will avoid diseases, stay healthy, and change their lives by adopting new eating habits.

nhealthy eating habits have been a huge detriment to the black community in North America. African Americans are often coming from a lower economic status, which means they have less access to healthier food options. Those coming out of poverty cannot afford to feed their family healthier food options. If you go into any grocery store, you notice that
the healthy food options usually cost significantly more than the “junk food” that is often towards the front of the store. This is a problem that impacts people from all different backgrounds, but it affects people of color the most because they are coming from a disadvantaged population. any of us always tell that great lie that we want to get into shape at the start of every new year. Placing that on the checklist of task to start, work out, get a trainer and make great strides in the health and exercise to personally get fit. With these thoughts, many people search for the right trainer or workout advisor to get your body back in shape. For men, it is even harder to find that right person because men are selective about the right trainers, investing large amounts of money and following what is necessary to get your results. However, on the eastern shore, there is no shortage of trainers and experts in exercise and fitness. One person who has been a trainer virtually and in the gym since he was 18 years old. He has designed customized programs and exercise schedules for interested people looking to get in shape. Justin Pryor of JP Fitness is definitely an expert in fitness as he designs nutritional programs, personal training, coaching, supplement

support and guidance. Justin uses his knowledge to develop that perfect dietary and exercise regime to meet the needs of the individual. Justin takes the time to explain what exactly the diet comprise, so the client understands the process. Justin uses online coaching to monitor the success of each individual who signs up for training. This training allows his clients to be anywhere in the world. Justin uses photos and weight documentation to monitor the progress of each individual and writes the cardio and workout regimen based on this information. He readjusts the programs to make sure the growth of the individual doesn’t decline or become stagnant. For the individual who wants a more hands-on training, Justin has one-on-one training programs to help you reach your specific goal. He designs the one-on-one training with a specific exercise routine geared toward your individual needs. Justin’s training philosophy depends on the person, and the number one goal in which the individual desires to improve. One tip Justin shared, “men’s bodies drop in testosterone once they hit a certain age and it is necessary to know where the testosterone level is so you can maximize potential gains in fitness.” Finding out the hormonal levels will allow for greater achievements with the body. Starting with understanding possible hormone imbalance whether male or female, Justin pushes the individual to find out these issues before the start of the workout series. Also, Justin incorporates supplement guidance in the process of training to combat against any issues and maximize progress. Justin advocates for his clients to make short term and long-term goals, short-term meaning losing 10 pounds and hitting those marks serves as motivation.The key is to keep the client focused on the shortterm goals. Justin has also been successful in training clients for body competitions on the east coast. Many of his clients perform well in these competitions and often win trophies and awards for their hard work and excellent coaching from Justin. To understand the knowledge shared in the interview with Justin was astounding and motivated me to move back into the gym and work on my 2019 body. Just starting is the only thing you need to do and stop procrastinating in the decision to exercise. Working out will lead to better mental health, physical attributes and overall great mindset towards life. Justin feels that the authenticity of exercise training programs have been effected by tainted social media and quick fix exercise solutions. But with his great clientele and consistent training methods, social media will not affect the success of JP Fitness. Inspire One 4

Game your way to fitness
In case you have a gaming platform at home then you are already on your way to fitness. Some great games for getting back into shape are Nike-Kinect training, HYVE ICAROS for Samsung gear virtual reality, Beachbody p90x (Xbox), Widerun (Oculus Rift and Samsung gear VR) along with Zumba Fitness (Xbox 360), Dance Revolution (Nintendo, Xbox, Wii, PlayStation), Biggest Loser Challenge (Nintendo Wii) and Wipeout create and Crash (Nintendo Wii and Xbox systems). Invest in any of these games, and you can enjoy an immediate adrenaline rush and pumped up 5 Inspire One

Join self-defense classes
Self-defense is not technically exercise and yet it can give you all the benefits of exercise. They design self-defense classes with beginners as the focus group, unlike most martial arts programs. Any typical self-defense class will have a combination of lunges, squats, situps, pushups and some cardio inside it as you perfect the moves of wiping out future attackers. And it’s mostly in a group environment so you will have peer support that makes exercise more fun.

Yoga
Yoga has many other therapeutic benefits apart from aiding in weight loss. Yoga boosts the metabolic pathways of the body, cures depression, decreases stress levels and overall contributes to a healthy quality of life. Start with more comfortable asanas like Surya Namaskar that stretch the muscles and lift the mood and move to mid-level ones like bhujanga asana that targets the tummy and the thigh muscles. Practice with a trained yoga practitioner in the privacy of your home as there is the vast number of yoga lessons available online…. and you are free from an excessive expense of time and energy. Or else, if you are the social type you can join a good yoga class. There are so many other ways to keep yourself fit even if you hate exercise like swimming, biking, mountaineering and choose the activity that appeals to you the most. Remember sustained physical activity produces the most effective results!!
Zumba
Zumba is super popular because it’s so much fun and doesn’t conjure up images of people sweating it out in a gym. A Zumba class is typically a group of people dancing their hearts out in a fun environment, and this is sure to January-February 2019
Excitement in Our Children

TEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, four pivotal subjects that our kids seem to shy away from today.
To begin; we should look at why kids seem to gravitate away from STEM subjects and where their interests are being directed to instead. A lot of kids find school boring.[1] This is the problem. Think back to when you were a child, I’m willing to wager that you didn’t wake up every weekday eager to get to school. Nope.You were like the rest of us; you dragged your feet until the very last minute. It felt like prison.[2] If we can’t get children to be excited about school in the first place then how will we ever get them to be interested in STEM subjects? The first step is to make both school and learning feel like something wanted, something that will be enjoyable and beneficial. A perfect example is sports. Most children love sports classes because they are fun (enjoyable) and keep a person fit and healthy (beneficial). So why can this not attribute to STEM subjects? Surely there is a way to make them as fun and attractive. You can do this with role models. Ask a child about basketball, and they’ll likely talk about LeBron James or Steph Curry all day long. Question a child about (American) football, and they’ll fit Russell Wilson or Terrell Suggs in there. Talk to a child about... you get where I’m going with this. Yet if you ask a child about science do you think they will mention Alexander Flemming[3] who discovered penicillin and has saved countless lives? Or about Mae Jemison[4] who was the first black woman to travel to space! If we want our kids to be interested in STEM subjects, then we need to show them the stars of the subjects they can look up to - just January-February 2019
like they do in the world of entertainment. This isn’t to saythat the entertainment world is any less critical or has lesser talented individuals. Those teaching STEM subjects need to take their cue from the entertainment world and, well, entertain and educate! You’re probably wondering why STEM subjects are so important to children, is there a real need for them to pick up skills from these areas? Yes. There will be jobs in the tech sector that don’t even an exist yet [5], that our children will need to gain skills for - now! Just think of how difficult it is to describe to a person over 60 just what a ‘social media coordinator’ or an ‘Instagram influencer is.’ This is just one example of many skills[6] that STEM subjects can teach to our kids; these subjects are unique in the sense they drive innovation and forward thinking. If looked at from a paramount view, they actually build our entire world around science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Don’t believe me? EDUCATION house and do not go home. Inquisitive as children are he took the route home to investigate like most STEM minded children would do. As he entered the space he called home, there was a distinction in the house’s layout, EVERYTHING was gone! EVERYTHING! Facing this tragedy as a youngster pushed Richard into a space of quietness and withdrawal. As Richard grew up experiencing the pain of a marriage falling apart for his parents and bouncing from place to place to secure a safe place to stay, it was a visit to one house that changed his life forever. Richard took it upon himself to walk to the nearest church and he received salvation. From that moment on, experiences within the streets of the small New Jersey town would not hinder his progress. Richard excelled and graduated from high schoolto move to UMES where he graduated as an educator. From there, this small-framed young man with the heart of a giant entered the hearts and minds of his students. Gaining respect and attention by never compromising who he is and yet respecting the student, Richard became popular in Somerset County. As a STEM teacher, Richard help develops the mind of many students and giving them more than knowledge about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics but gave them tips about life and how to gain access to success. Richard did not just stop at earning his Bachelor’s but maintained the momentum in earning his Master’s and Doctorate from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dr. Warren, a man with the big heart, believes that his success in being selected as State Teacher of the Year is due to divine favor and that the world is ready for realness. Ready for people who may not start at the beginning of the line or received all the resources in life but finish their journey strong. Society is seeking those examples of people who have mastered life amid tragedy, obstacles, and setbacks yet able to remain focused on the purpose of life. Another high point as Dr. Warren mentioned in the conversation was that he represents the African American male in a different light. As an authentic young man, his approach to education has set him apart from the rest of the 55,000 plus teachers in the state. Allowing his technique and his ability to win this award for the young African American males as a beacon of light during their journey to get knowledge and education. Despite a meager start, Richard’s achievement shows that this can happen for a young African American male

young eighth-grade science teacher from a small town in Somerset County sat in great anticipation for the winner’s name called for Maryland’s teacher highest honor. As he sat awaiting the result, many thoughts ran through his mind about his upbringing, his current family with his wife and a young son, his students but most of all himself. He pondered how did I get here and a contender for the highest honor in the state. Finally, after several minutes of teasing from the announcer, Richard heard his name… Dr. Richard H. Warren, Jr., 2018 Maryland’s Teacher of theYear. Growing up in New Jersey in a humble beginning, a rough environment surrounded Richard, yet he had a focus to move toward greatness. Seeing many things in life that caused him great pain and sadness, Richard’s only dream was to be successful in whatever he decided. Little did Richard know God was orchestrating a series of events to place him in a position that would propel his life for the future. The journey took a shift one day as they called Richard to the office during school and received a message to go straight to his grandmother’s 7 Inspire One

that lived through street violence, broken home and struggles of life. As the journey continues, Dr. Warren now looks for avenues and outlets to voice his thoughts on how educators can reach the youth of today. His expectations of his students is not how smart you are, but how much effort you put into learning. Another expectation is that he wants his students to bring respect in the classroom and he vows to return that same amount of respect to them. Finally, Dr. Warren wants all of his students to use the information from learning and apply that knowledge to their lives. His genuine care and understanding for students are changing the narrative of how male educators viewed in the school system. Another unique perspective that Dr.Warren shared is the increasingly large numbers of discipline referrals for black males. He believes that these males need to see themselves in the curriculum, not being overly disciplined and making sure they understand the material before moving them to the next grade. “Educators are important and taking the time to make sure that all students get the information despite goals and objectives of the course is a key”, remarked Dr. Warren. The honor of being the top teacher in the State of Maryland comes with a lot of responsibility in representing teachers, male teachers, and African American males as a symbol of perseverance and success. This honor helps to show students especially black students to strive for the best out of life regardless of the situation. His message to his students is that he knows life is hard yet they can make it if they apply themselves despite their rough beginnings. “The village mentality needs to find its way back into the community and stop pointing fingers at what the children are doing and be a support in teaching them not to do certain behaviors”, commented Dr.Warren. As the top teacher in the State of Maryland, Dr.Warren’s plans to use this award as a way of exposure to increase his appetite to be better, do more, help kids and advocate for more teachers.This award allows him to have the power over procrastination and to change his approach how he sees education. Also, this award has exposed the beauty in his relationship with his family and his walk with God. Being the role model the best way he can be important to him. They should see the presentation of the award to Dr. Warren as the beacon of light for all students but as a guiding light for the black youth of this region. Inspire One 8

ARTS & CULTURE and oppression. How? You ask. Simple, the Black vote/elector is, in fact, the most powerful in America. It matters the most. However; not when the socioeconomic and political structure exists upon a caste system where people who look like me are at the bottom, and those who look like Trump are at the top. What am I getting at? That’s easy guys. We need our own political party or body founded on the ideals that were ripening for harvest in the 50s and 60s. And with increased widespread instantaneous information and communication; the need for violence decreases exponentially. When and where we establish our own body politic that serves our socioeconomic and cultural needs; the world will see for itself that there has only been an attempt to make us appear powerless or lazy when in fact and reality we are too powerful for our own good. And unfortunately, those who have oppressed and seek to continue to suppress our true power politically; are doing a darn good job by merely: limiting our options to a fox and a wolf. Until they got the Apprentice out of the White House as a wake-up call. Smell the coffee yet? Your vote Matters most of my brothers and sisters. Just gotta vote for yourself. Rather than those who pretend to share our struggle just to get our vote and laugh all the way to the bank.

n a compare and contrast, Malcolm X once painted a picture of Republicans as Wolves and Democrats as Foxes. One is sly and cunning. The other outright beastly. It’s no wonder little has changed over the past half a century later. This first week of November 2018; Americans did something they have been doing since the Establishment of this Country. They voted. In a country Afrikans literally built that after contractual trickery and outright theft literally stole it by conquest.
Which begs the question does the black vote really matter? That is a loaded question because both yes and no suffice. In many aspects, the Black vote is the most critical vote in America. When we factor in how the Civil Rights 9 Inspire One
movement with Martin Luther King, Jr. among others and the Declaration of Independence by several nations of People of Color; for colonialism to hold on to dear life: People of Color aka Blacks aka Negroes provided specific concessions in the form of a clear liberation and... integration. Suffice to say, integration was as MLK put it one “into a burning house.” The liberation was as Oginga Odinga put it “not yet Uhuru.” Uhuru is Swahili for Freedom. Powerful symbol a Ghanaian Kwame Nkrumah from West Afrika entered the foreword to ideas from East Afrika. The unity of people of color from the abolition of slavery up to the Civil Rights Movement and the fights for independence is testament when we factor in: there was no internet or widespread Television. But; somehow we were on a similar page. And here is where whether or notthe Black vote Matters in America gets the final answer... NO! People of Color were a powerhouse reckoned with after it abolished involuntary slavery. ‘Black Wall Street’ is a prime example. But what

happens? We became politically involved in a system or ‘house’ that destroyed our economy exemplified in and by Black Wall Street because; it posed a threat to the power paradigm existing then and which metamorphosed into what we see today. There is no doubt the Black Vote is the most powerful ‘minority’ vote because in the right environment as seen with Barack Obama; it will influence the ‘Majority’ vote. As in many who voted for Trump complaining about Obama doing a poor job are the same who voted for Obama not to be leftbehind and risk being ostracized and coming out of the racist closet prematurely. Personally, I do not believe in racism. I have grown to see it as a caste system resulting from indoctrination and had people who look like me at the bottom and people who look like Trump at the top. As a direct result of such a system; people who look like me have suffered worldwide. But going back to Nkrumah, Odinga and Malcolm X; there is a way to end the suffering January-February 2019

He has assumed a role as an activist for the community waiting for the unexpected and planning for the future. We think about Jermichael’s influence from a leadership stance in a variety of ways such as organizational, neighborhood, community, and societal. In neighborhoods and communities, we expect for local individuals like Jermichael, willing and able to take responsibility for community betterment by being forward and that leading voice for the community. The modest example above highlights some underlying assumptions about Jermichael’s community leadership that has shown in the past and anticipation for the near future. Leaders such as Jermichael show love for the community deep in their heart. This outward expression of love shows he cares about the forward progress of the community in which he lives and works. Having the ability to influence city leaders to construct a Recreational Center on Truitt Street for our youth to have a place to attend is a prime example. Mr. Mitchell always works on the approach of his response that will have the most significant impact on the community.Whether he is taking part in the event with the Lions Club or coaching basketball at Mardela Middle High School, Jermichael has his finger on the pulse of the community. Another aspect of his leadership is that he is the Co-founder of the Extraordinary League of Gentleman. This is an organization that binds male leaders in the community to help restore and revive the possibilities for our youth. This group is a beacon of light for the community and organized with other groups from other areas on the Eastern Shore that help to inspire and educate the youth. Leaders ideally positioned to improve the community and help increase the awareness and education of those that live within, especially the youth. Jermichael uses his connections with many residents as a way to help bridge gaps within the city. “Our community has a tremendous opportunity to bridge the gap between communities and state officials, but we approach that idea in a way we don’t compromise who we are,” remarked Jermichael. Involving community leaders in this process allows the community to gather information and be mentally prepared to handle any issue we face. As expressed in his love for youth, Jermichael has become the head boys’ basketball coach for Mardela high school. A strong advocate for youth, Jermichael is always looking for ways to educate, engage and energize the youth in a way that is positive and effective in the growth of each youth. Intensely watching every move of the city leaders along with the reaction of the black leaders and community builds as the information of the issue unfolds. The question that many of us in the black community ask, do we have a voice that will help mitigate the process as we face this hard issue? These type of incidents are becoming more and more common and unfortunately impact the black community as one of frustration and anger. Our community often falls victim to many things such as unfortunate incidents like this, and we need leaders to stand against these issues. As the community looks for that voice there has been a voice active and engaged on behalf of the community, Jermichael Mitchell stands ready at a moment’s notice to be that advocate for the black community. home, Jermichael has always made it a personal vow to make sure every child has a chance at life. He gives a lot of his time and energy to all youth of Salisbury and makes sure that their small voice heard for planning and brainstorming ideas within the city. Jermichael talks to his youth about the effects of their behavior when they are out in the community. He pushed them to excel in school and reach to get those grades that will make them valuable citizens. The unique quality about Jermichael is that he is direct and real about his words whether for children or adults. Jermichael often talks to youth about the issues that people of color face within this country and especially in this county of Wicomico. Jermichael believes that to handle the topics about race and unfair treatment toward the community of color we must start with that difficult conversation. He believes that to understand who we are as a black community, leaders especially city leaders must allow us to explain what it is like to be us. To share what trials, obstacles, and pitfalls designed to cause the community of color stress and frustration and how specific policies and actions of leaders influence adverse reactions from the community. The central concept that Jermichael believes is that people need to understand each community and not make assumptions of that community. Jermichael feels strongly about the investment that needs to be made in the black community and has taken on some leadership responsibilities with NAACP Wicomico County Branch as theYouth Liaison.This position allows him to reach to the youth and offer feedback and advice on how the veteran members of the community can reach the youth. As contemporary problems arise, we must have a person ready to intercede for the community with knowledge, connection, and wit to make a difference. To some in the black community these efforts may seem unnecessary, but in reality, our community needs strong voices from strong leaders to help make that difference. Community leaders such as Jermichael must seize the chance to engage our community of color in preparing them and ultimately educating them about the steps to become better and valuable citizens of the city. s the years get more and more difficult to navigate through, everyone can use medicine that distresses their life. Many people turn to pills, others to alcohol but one type of medicine even the young at heart can enjoy is art. Art soothes the spirit, opens the mind and connects the soul within a person’s mind that represents that soothing moment in life. There are many artists on the Eastern Shore, but out of the phenomenal group, one stands out as a unique, charismatic and spiritual artist through the message he conveys with oil, a brush, and a canvas. With every stroke of the brush, God has allowed each painting created to speak truth, healing, and love to everyone that has viewed. The ability to create art and bring it to life has been the gift of Patrick Henry from a very young age. Born in the rural area of Worcester County, this Sinepuxent native has always had an eye for art. Sometimes he viewed the landscape of his birthplace as an artist haven for it to place inspirational images on canvas for all the world to see. Patrick, the 5th child of Samuel and Marigold Henry, always labeled as a unique child with the gift of seeing things in a more artistic nature. His passion of capturing scenic images of the Eastern Shore developed well before attending and graduating from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD. Many of Patrick’s paintings tell a story about life in the rural area of Maryland. He often finds images from different experiences and brings them to life through each stroke of his brush. As one looks at the scenic or historic buildings of the Eastern Shore, it is challenging trying not to connect personally with the image on canvas. Patrick invites the mind and heart to remember the place or person depicted on canvas and their importance in one’s life. A humble artist, it has guided Patrick through his career by the sounds of the Bible on cd or words of inspiration from different pastors from across the country. Patrick spends many days tucked away in his studio or condo painting images he feels means more than just what it shows on canvas. He can energize his client-based by jaw-dropping images through his expert talent and keen connection to his spiritual relationship. Every picture that Patrick creates is not just painting but tells a story of times when life was simple and functional. Patrick has been painting for over 50 years, and every painting inspired by different recollections of life or life as he remembered. Painting is Patrick’s passion and therapy in 13 Inspire One

handling many things that come to destroy our joy and happiness. Sometimes Patrick’s art inspired and used as a source of healing and breakthrough for him and his family during the loss of close family members. As Patrick somberly expressed, “I loved that guy. He was like a guiding force in all that I wanted to do. He was my big brother, and I just admired him because of the sacrifices he made just for making sure the family was ok”. This was Patrick’s recall as he remembered one of his older brothers, Samuel better known as Sammy Jr. He expressed that there are so many members of his family that have moved on, but Patrick understood that these hard goodbyes are part of the process of life. Patrick often shares times when he looked back on one tragedy of losing his father in a drowning accident off the coast of Assateague Island in 1975 that caused his journey to take an abrupt turn. He was about to move on with life as a man, and then this tragedy struck, and the sudden January-February 2019
loss pushed him back home to be with his mother. The sudden loss of his father, an instrumental factor in his life, caused deep emotional pain and anguish because he honestly never got to say goodbye. In his earlier paintings, one could see the love and healing message that helped him walk courageously down this rough path in life. Many times we often fall to drugs, depression, a life of regret and stay there but Patrick overcame that brief period of test and trials and used that as motivation as he created images on canvas that are just remarkable. With much prayer and consistent love from his mother and family, Patrick could regain control and develop into the person he is today. The family has always been a significant portion of his life, and with his wife Velda and their only child Stephanie, Patrick used tragedy, loss, talent, and skill to help establish his art career and a life for his family. The humble upbringing makes Patrick who he is today, and this humble start causes him to remember that life was great despite these humble beginnings. He remarked that they weren’t rich, but the love they had for the family made things enjoyable. Although Patrick Henry Art is a household name in the world of art, he is more than the perfecter of the canvas. Patrick is a God-fearing man and never shies away from discussing his love for God and how God has been a significant influence in his life. Patrick serves on various committees at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Berlin, MD and often works alongside his sister and brother in the culinary dept. Outside of the church, Patrick has served on several boards, a full-time educator at Stephen Decatur High School and a business owner with his wife, Velda. They have hung Patrick’s artwork in State Capital buildings of Maryland, Museum in Baltimore, Wildfowl Museum and Peninsula Regional Medical Centr in Salisbury, several hotels in Ocean City not to mention art shows in Richmond, Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina and even Chicago, Illinois. The beauty in this accomplishment is because of the blessing and favor of God upon Patrick’s life. He gives God all the credit for the fantastic talent and notoriety he receives from every sale of his artwork. The primary concept that one must take away after meeting Patrick is that his unique ability to create an image on canvass translates to his healing words through God’s eyes. Patrick often shares his wisdom as God gives it to him with people in casual conversations or people passing by his awesome artwork. His images are worldwide and are hanging in homes of many customers in the United States and abroad. To be a young man emerging from Maryland’s Eastern Shore is an inspiration and despite humble beginnings, life has a way of placing you in front of millions of people, whether in person or on canvas. With the help from the teacher and strong encouragement from his mother, Jerome entered the Job Corp and took up the subject of culinary. Not sure if he could complete the coursework he sought weekly and sometimes daily encouragement from his teacher. Culinary soon became his focus, and after several classes, Jerome engaged his mind and heart into the craft. While engaged in the art of cooking, Jerome found his niche in life. He could look at life with more purpose besides navigating and overcoming the rough terrain of Washington D.C. Jerome really became intrigued with the field of cooking and focused on his current opportunity and made sure his efforts reaped a successful outcome from the Job Corps. “That experience really helped develop both who I am today and who I will become, in technique and through those long hours of standing. You’re talking about an inner city streetwise guy who appreciated the art of cooking, carrying a 50-pound bag of potatoes while running through D.C. street, dodging bullets or seeing a loved one shot.” This experience was so engaging that after completing the Job Corps, he enrolled in The Art Institute of Charlotte. There at Charlotte, Jerome became the star student, earning many opportunities for extra credit and becoming the example for many students to follow. Jerome thrived in his craft, understanding techniques and different ideas in food presentation and quality. Earning his degree from Art Institute, Jerome became the main chef at the “officer’s club” at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. On Ft. Bragg, Jerome handled many duties for the restaurant and became the main chef. As life would have it, Jerome ran into many challenges with life and divorced his wife and moved to Salisbury, MD. As we know, life’s problems can knock you to your knees, but the perseverance of Jerome pushed him to work harder and reach higher for success. Once he moved to Salisbury, Jerome continued his path in culinary working for local restaurants, sometimes back to back in a day. This investment of cook-

rowing up in the inner city of Washington D.C., learning how to maneuver through the rough streets of D.C., cooking was the last thing on Jerome’s mind. In high school, Jerome witnessed many things in life that forced him to grow up quickly. The streets of Southeast pushed Jerome into a direction that would have made him another statistic. Having him witness the death, street violence, and other things while living the life pushed him far from ever being a chef. As fate would have it, he found favor with many people in the community especially a teacher from his high school. Pouring into his life, this teacher invested time, energy and money to make sure Jerome’s future differed from the common expectation of the African American boys in Southeast D.C. It was then that Jerome knew he had to find a different direction in life and learn a trade or skill that would take him from the dangers of the Southeast streets.

He established Jerome’s Dine on a Dime at the beginning of 2018 with the sole purpose of providing high-quality catering for the Eastern Shore region. The efforts of Jerome and Niya have moved this catering business into one of the hottest catering business on the shore. They slate the catering business in becoming one of the most successful catering businesses in Salisbury by providing quality service and professional etiquette. Jerome also puts his craft to work in many of his own cooking as he has to create a lot of his sauces because of food allergies. Allergic to a lot in many of the mayonnaise and other sauces, Jerome takes the time to develop these sauces for his food. He is extremely concerned about the way restaurants treat food allergies. He believes that many restaurants take this situation too lightly and not realize that the life of customers is in their hand. Jerome remarked, “many times I see chefs just go through the mo-
tions. Not realizing that their specific actions could affect the lives of many people that visit a restaurant.” Jerome Brown is just one example of how to overcome the challenges that life presents as one tries to accomplish success in life. Not allowing life’s circumstances to take over but persevering through all struggles and harsh situations to become what God has intended is miraculous. To young chefs coming up, don’t be afraid to use your creativity. Don’t fall into the habit of thinking if you don’t have something that a recipe calls for, then it’s just a failure. he ‘Candied Yam’ is a restaurant in the heart of Salisbury, Md nestled near the center of the city. Since moving from the location on the north side of the city, CandiedYams has become a treat enjoyed by all. It is one of the favorite hangout places for people coming from church, looking to enjoy dinner throughout the week or desiring a dinner treat on a Saturday afternoon. As you enter the building, welcomed by a magnificent and delightful setting that marriages southern charm with contemporary design. The environment of tables and booth in connection with the wood floor décor and black trim alters the mood for a delightful experience. Sitting in any table or booth, you have a beautiful view of the upper-level dining along with a peek of the carryout window that also serves as the ordering area for the customer’s food. For those who do not book a table and are waiting, there is a small sitting area or a bar in which customers can wait for their table. The chairs and tables are basic but sit comfortable and bring about a unique dining experience. The menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering starters. I had the crab dip which is always a delight to taste while my family enjoyed an order of stuffed mushrooms. They were exquisite. The main course comprised a double fried pork chop seasoned that is to die for like it was out of grandma’s kitchen accompanied by the infamous candied yams and collard greens. The taste of the yams expresses the name of the restaurant while it had such an enriching sweet flavor with just

the right amount of cinnamon, juice, and sugar. Also, others ordered the wonderful seasoned fried chicken, turkey wings seasoned just right and cooked to perfection. They topped the dining experience off with an abundance of soft, warm scrumptious rolls that are addictive. All the dishes served had the warmth of home-made soul food that keeps you coming back for more. The chefs take great care in selecting the best quality ingredients and preparing the food with such accuracy. The restaurant also caters for customers of all ages with a kids’ menu and various selections of salads, sandwiches, seafood, beef, chicken, turkey wings, and pork. The taste of the food allows for your mind to experience true soul cooking with a great presentation and excellent service.

The service of the waiter was attentive and accompanied the high quality of the cooking. They greet you with a beautiful smile from the hostess and wait staff. Thankfully, the owner and hostess, a charming middle-aged woman, is always around willing to exchange some kind words with all her clients. The economic cost of the food and the attentive waiters´ service, made the dining experience with food of the most exquisite. If you are ever in the city’s middle area and looking for a dining experience, I would recommend Candied Yams. When visiting the restaurant, make sure you have time to enjoy the experience and do not expect a quick in and out for dining. If you are in a rush, the restaurant has a carryout window you can order your food and pick it up at your convenience. I give 4.75 out of 5 stars and highly recommend going to the Candied Yams restaurant. January-February 2019

I find one of the most famous streets in America, Bourbon Street in New Orleans. At the heart of the city, there is nothing you can’t find along this street. find along Bourbon Street. This street also embraces the Mardi gras, which is the greatest free show globally only found in the world. For as long as 15 days each year in New Orleans, it allows you to wear costumes, enjoy the nightlife and take part in the parades. It is always fun in New Orleans, and you can party as much as you want! If you are a fan of spooky adventures, New Orleans is the place to be. As earlier stated that it used to be one of the largest port cities in America, New Orleans used to attract pirates. It has a history of lawlessness, and it says buildings to hold restless souls of those that experienced injustice. This is one reason most scary movies shot in New Orleans and also believed vampires once lurked on its streets.

or those who are unaware, the term ‘going natural’ for a woman of color predominately means she has stopped using chemically based products in or on her hair. For some, it base the decision around the will to be closer to the Earth by decreasing the use of man-made beauty supplies. One way to start can be by just using fewer products. This first step will allow the hair to create and sustaining its own oil and moisture. For those unconcerned about the use of chemicals, the natural look may appeal to the eye. Others may only seek an alternative style that requires less maintenance. Here, support refers to hairdresser visits, and all costs connected to not doing their own hair. Those avoiding external costs may face an unexpected battle with the extra time and effort it takes for the desired hairstyle. Shampooing, conditioning, drying, greasing, and styling could be catastrophic to one’s routine schedule. Once a person trains their hair, management gets easier. Have you heard the saying about when a woman changes her hair drastically that serious change is underway or has already taken place? This could be a fashion statement, or it could be a for real, semi-permanent change. I’ve found either to be true on different occasions. Some women enjoy stretching their wardrobe to create a range of personality. By mixing and matching garment styles, it may only seem natural to complete one’s ensemble with fashionable hair. This ties into if going natural is just a fad for some women. There’s a thin line between copying someone and being inspired. What may be experimental to one person could be a whole lifestyle for another. YouTube has become a do-it-yourself channel with plenty of testimonial videos from women open to sharing not only their past story but also their current journeys. Sure some women wouldn’t go outside for the mail when they’re having a bad hair day, but for those of you reading who are brave enough not to let embarrassment stop you, thanks for taking a stand and being a light to those in need of your direction. but I always had the desire to become a professional barber since I was little,” remarked Dorian. Dorian Purnell dreamed of being a barber and understanding the trade of the barber profession since he was a teenager. As a young man, he always thought of himself as an expert barber which was not the popular choice for children his age. He often thought of how the profession could influence his way of life and reach his dream to become a barber. Many times Dorian felt the shame of wanting to be a barber, but the call on his life became too strong for him to worry what others thought. He then turned his energy to learning the craft, 21 Inspire One
studying the trade and understanding how to be a business owner. His primary motivation in striving to be the best as a barber was his parents and becoming a business owner. The motivation to make his mother, father and grandmother proud of him was his focal point. Dorian’s desire to be different and his Christian faith was the fire that pushed him in the face of his naysayers and critics while on this journey. It came to a point that Dorian realized what people think is less important than what people say about you. His close connection with his mother helped him in tough times to help him deal with the thoughts that others had about him and his career. She also helped him to understand that the people who are criticizing you aren’t worth the energy or time. Dorian’s mother pushed him to check the credentials of the people who criticized him of his dream and helped him to realize that those people criticizing him are more than likely not doing anything with their lives. Recently Dorian lost his mother, his number 1 fan, and the loss has altered his life. One of the most significant values he cherishes is his family. He uses the words, wisdom, and love of his mother as his motivation to keep succeeding each day. In one of his shops, a picture hangs in the shop that always reminds him of the unconditional love that his mother had for him. Many times he thought of his mother’s passing before she did, but when it happened, he felt he handled the passing better than expected. Losing a parent is an intense moment, but Dorian used the loss of his mother as fuel January-February 2019
to help him in his journey in life. Trusting in God has been his moral guidance through the times of change and loss. Applying what he learned through his spiritual teaching defines Dorian Purnell and using what he learned has made him a cut above the rest of the barbers. Dorian is the owner of 3 barbershops and does a lot of teaching and workshops in Maryland, D.C. and other areas for novice barbers. His perseverance in the craft of barbering has set him apart from the rest of his colleagues and showed that sacrifice and following the call of God will make you unique. During his travels from one barbershop to another barbershop, Dorian takes time to survey his life and assess his works to make sure he is in tune with God and offering the best quality service to his clients. His primary word is effort, effort in all that he does and always strives to be in his life. Dorian always vows to himself to be better than he was the day before. His passion is barbering, but one day he wants to have the option to cut hair because of choice and not a necessity. Dorian still pushes past the standard level and found a hobby in photography that has peeked his interest. Dorian’s prior employment was a correctional officer in Worcester County but his passion and love to become an expert barber were too much, and he left the correctional officer field and moved closer to his dream. Dorian’s life shows that inspiration and prayer works and will take you places you can only dream of. As a licensed barber since 2010 and cutting hair since he was 13, Dorian defines success as happiness and being happy with yourself and not living for others. His one desire is to use the effort he gave as a correctional officer for Worcester County toward his craft, dream, and passion as an expert barber or groomer. He has based a lot of his success on his people skills and the love he has to make sure all his clients are happy once they leave his shop. Dorian expressed, “that’s the part of barbering that people don’t realize is important. You have these barbershops that allow everything to go on in the shop and causes new and old clients to leave because of the atmosphere”. He wants to make sure that January-February 2019

the experience that someone receives when they enter his barbershop reflects the concern and care he has for his clients. Dorian has big dreams and is well on his way in accomplishing all that God has designed for him to achieve. whose land is America really? Who’s Country or Nation does this plain epitome of modern civilization and freedom belong to? If I told you there is another State that has been here since before the declaration of Independence? A State already established as Tribal Nations? Most wouldn’t believe or would brush it off as rhetorical. However, there is in fact, an original State of America that has been downtrodden since West Eurasia January-February 2019
begun its expansion called The State of Black America. This State is also one that identifies a State of Mind and Being among a group of people who literally built America. A little-known fact about America is; long before the transatlantic endeavors that kidnapped and reshuffled Afrikans, they populated this land like most every region on earth; by Coloreds alias Blacks alias Negroes. I have Ancestry across Afrika and proud to have it. Mountains exist across America much like those found in Afrika. Many of which are hundreds if not thousands of years old.Who do they belong to? What does that mean about the true custodians of this land? They also know many traditional practices and relationship to the land as held by Native/Indigenous
Americans; were identical to those found in Afrika. Perhaps even the languages spoken by such Natives were an Afrikan dialect. Sounds like a theory but was essential to the Colonizers to ensure that the Natives lost their language? The movie “Roots” reveals a lot about the history of Blacks living in America. The ‘what’s your name’ scene depicts how tearing the Black American from his roots in Afrika through violence and fear. It is my firm belief such actions were to ensure a disconnect between the Blacks in America and the Blacks everywhere else. The movement hijacked and taken from being a movement for the liberation and true freedom of Black America; to one where chanting “Black Lives Matter” has become a mantra 50 plus years later. Such a mantra appears and proves to create even more discord and confusion which confirms that black America holds the most potential anywhere on the Western Hemisphere. However, that potential cannot be reached in the current State of Black America. To tap into such potential, we must enter a State of Being where we value ourselves and our communities.The reason most

neighborhoods with the majority Black population have a negative reputation is because they have placed Black America in some purgatory, always waiting for Superman to save us in different situations. So far the only ‘Superman’ we get is one who leaves our neighborhoods gentrified and abandoned by those who lived in such neighborhoods for decades if not generations.Travel to the Chocolate City, Washington D.C. and see for yourself. It’s amazing the level of gentrification that is happening in that city and it would be hard to see a D. C. with majority Black Americans. But no more my brothers and sisters. The real Superman is here and has always been here. Just look in the mirror and the reflection you see is the only Superman/Superwoman that can save black America. We must realize and understand the major responsibility we all have to each other to unify and support one another. Understanding and realizing that there is not one person or group that will save us besides ourselves. We as a group or culture must adapt the ‘group think’ mentality like other cultures, where we ensure that we thrive before concerning ourselves with another group’s problems. Look at how the Jewish, Italians, Koreans and even our cousins from Central and South America although slowly deviating; exist concerning themselves and other groups. It is usually “Us first. Everybody else second to last”. Sadly, all the mentioned people have a disdain toward the State of Black America. One they almost appear to be happy and proud to hold. Makes sense in a capitalistic world where apparently one needs to capitalize off the misfortune of another to succeed.
STATE OF BLACK AMERICA We need to adopt the mentality that; where and if my neighbor isn’t in a favorable situation economically and socially, neither am I. We do not have to by any means adopt any mentality that puts any group down other than those who make and chose themselves to be an enemy. However, keep in mind nothing positive ever lasts amidst enmity. They build it comes crashing down on everyone at the climax or peak of whatever in such an environment. We must proceed holistically and humanely to ensure that those who seek to make themselves our enemy; do so only to expose themselves their true nature to the world. This is the only way the State of Black America will transform and germinate to bloom and look promising for Blacks Worldwide. The hardships we have faced for centuries are like that of a germinating seed. Ever notice that one blade of grass or stem that shoots through tarmac and concrete? That is us. I could share all of the woes we face and continue to suffer from kidnapping and lynching to mass incarceration to kill a fleeing man. Don’t forget the creation

of our neighborhoods and still are hubs for the most destructive drugs. However, what would such detail achieve other than reinforce the illusion we are weak and they are strong? And yes. It is an illusion. My studies in psychology have revealed a lot about the State of Mind within the State of Black America. Such revelation includes the use of fear keeping us from taking control of our lives and destiny. A fear that leads to ‘Stockholm Syndrome.’ Yes, my brothers and sisters; we suffer from an acute Stockholm Syndrome in that we feel we have no choice but to accept the State of Being. As created and perpetuated by groups that care more about their own collective future at the expense of ours as Black Americans. However, it only maintained by accepting that we are weak, and they are strong. In my dealing with legal issues without the retention of an attorney as a matter of choice; I have learned as much as my studies in psychology. When we are in court two aspects of life are at play, Psychology and Business. Ever wonder why a Black man who has committed no crime can be gunned down and the man who committed the crime of gunning such a man down walks free? What sense does that make? I remember hearing the family of a man killed in what seems to be the norm today; received $4 in compensation for costs. Why Black America? Why? It is because of words and terminology, curses and spells cast in a manner to make an illusion enforced by violence and fear. The words used in the so-called “Courts of law” working to ensure “justice” are not what we think. I could say one January-February 2019
thing is speaking here in common; however, the same words would mean something entirely different in the Courts across America. It’s why we apparently need lawyers and why lawyers spend over six years being educated to perpetuate a fraudulent system that says one thing but does another. This effects the State
of Black America because we really have no lawyers, not one, other than ourselves. I mean what does “Equal Protection of the Law” mean if not false advertising? Unless you want to believe those practicing at law are practicing the justice that benecontinued on pg 31

fits us instead of reality as recorded in history; it is crystal clear as Black America we do not have adequate representation where it matters most. Therefore, I insist we must build for ourselves and our own benefit as we did during the rise and existence of ‘Black Wall Street’ leading up to “The Black Panthers.” A little known or remembered fact is; the Black Panthers were a generation of Black America raised by those who built Black Wall Street. We went from Negro Slaves to Coloreds to Blacks. There is a term “under color of law.” I am not in a position to offer legal advice, but I would implore all inhabitants of the State of Black America to look into such terms as they will reveal a lot about our current condition politically, economically and spiritually/culturally. We need to establish many programs that identify the root not symptoms of our dis-ease. I mean when a Black woman forces a Black Man on ‘Child Support’; who does it truly benefit? The Black Woman? The Black Man? The Black Child? Whoever came up with such a system? None? These are the kind of questions we need to be asking to understand our position and our direction towards a better life. There was a time a woman would mother five or more children with such relative ease that those children would have five or more of their own children. Now; we appear to emulate “Two kids and a dog” and where there are over five it is seen as pure dysfunctionality 80% of the time. Luckily, we still keep Grandma/Grandpa at home rather than at a nursing home. Having them surrounded by people to take care of them as they took care of those who they raised. Something’s got to give my brothers and sisters. Best people to take care of our babies while we earn a living; are those whose babies we will always be. So we need early education schools by Black America for Black America that will allow us to compete as our true self not living up to a system that kidnapped to enslave us only to unshackle the physical 31 Inspire One
chains and replaces them with invisible ones. Best time to ensure our children grow up with no shackles; is from early years of education. We need a political system that is more focused on fostering leadership. A political system rather than enter us into a geopolitical system that prefers we stay asleep and go with the flow of another group. Republicans and Democrats apparently emancipated us now appear to care about our future but; nothing truly changes. Even with a Black Man as Supreme Court Justice. We need an economic system that will ensure the State of Black America has an equal and fair opportunity to compete on the global stage beyond entertainment. I am eager to say the Black dollar is keeping the American Economy hanging by a thread and believe it will come crashing down any moment now. For me, I prefer to be on the side of the grass where; when an economy that thrives on my enslavement crashes; I am not in a panic as those who prefer such an economic continues. We need to revive the Natural
respect for the family we once had. We need to realize the reflection we see in the mirror every day: is the Superman/Superwoman we have been waiting for. I will remind and assure you that no other Superman/Superwoman is coming for us. We need to Rise as The State of Black America; this is what the great Soul Whisperer Maya Angelou in “Still I Rise” embodied and called for. She is now our ancestor. We must Honor her without fail.

I love music and everything associated with the development of music.” Morris Co-founder and owner of The Lion’s Den in downtown Salisbury serves as a musician, producer, composer and arranger for the local artist on the Eastern Shore.This effort offered by Morris and his colleagues serve as a new wave of talent resurfacing in the lower Shore. In addition, to the musical abilities, Morris has the keen ability of being a musical mixing genius as he offers services for DJing at events and different functions. Jonathan started a recording studio in 2018 to help local artist and make them profitable by enhancing their sound and energy. The thing that sets this recording studio apart from others is the pricing of services. They set the prices to encourage local artist to seek professional support for their projects which is something Morris and friends deal with since they are artist themselves. Outside of being a recording studio, Lion’s Den offers musical services, instrumentation and beats, photography and videography and other necessary services needed for the artist. As a DJ, Morris creates mixes for the artist for their performances which makes their performance a little more coherent.The actual skill of Jonathan matured as his love for being a DJ grew while a student at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. back to his djing days or even his current event, challenges as a DJ is to read the crowd and catering to whoever hired you for your services. “That’s a fine line to walk because you want to get paid but you want your reputation to stay intact with the listeners,” exclaimed Morris. Some hard situations as a DJ, he has served clients who are extreme micromanagers of his services which limits his musical creativity. His love for music pushes him to want to perform for and push the musical boundaries of the mixed crowd.Weddings allow him to be creative in his musical talent and reach different cultures through creation of music from different genres. The ability to bridge the gap between different cultures makes him the most engaged and happiest behind the sound. His inspiration for becoming a musician and musical creator started since he was young, playing drums in church with his father. Morris is also a proficient player on the violin and upright bass in which he can read notes and play fluently besides being self taught in playing the keyboard. Morris’ musical ability did not stop at playing instrument but led over to writing raps and songs. He remembered, “it was a time in college when there was a rap battle and some of my friends asked if I wrote music. I said yes, and they got me to write a rap for the battle the next day and once my friend said it, the crowd went crazy. From that day I vowed to say my own words regardless of how shy or nervous I got.” As Lion’s Den grows, Morris sees his company expanding beyond his wildest dreams. He wants to push the brand and progressive sound of the music he is passionate. His sights are on being a top musical producer and music company on the Eastern Shore and offering that unique sound for all to enjoy. While talking with Morris, you can feel the passion he has for the musical scene through his words and explanation of the creation of sound. As a young man, Morris has great promise to lead the musical field here on the shore and offer great leadership to a lot of the people in music.
Outside of music, Morris graduated from UMES with a Bachelor’s Degree in English with a minor in telecommunication. In addition, he serves our country as a Reservist with the Army and offers a weekend to the military every month. Jonathan’s groomed his mental strength since his years at UMES and then into life with his musical business. The creation of Lion’s Den is a longtime dream and making it work is his focus. The one thing that helps to explain the name of Lion’s Den is the mentality and perseverance of Jonathan and his business partner AB These two gentleman carry the mentality of a lion and move about the world with a never quit attitude. He has learned through some difficult challenges to keep moving and keep following the path to his dream. Morris is an awesome example of how a young person can build his value by always trying and pushing even during the struggle. Life has hit Jonathan, and he has matured mentally into knowing what he wants and how he could be a value to this community.

o you remember the melody to that song you grew up to? Can you at all recall the words? If so, did the lyric you’re able to recite, have to do anything with the underlying message to that song? Music can bring us out of the darkest places and uplift us. Music can also be like a bad childhood scar that heals as you age but, always shows. It can even assist in defining a piece of your personality. How? You may ask. The subconscious parts of our brains hold random and specific bits of information and later react to things that trigger deep memories and emotions. These emotions touch upon beliefs. Gradually, what we believe and feel, we act upon. Is it possible we are influencedby what we hear even from a young age? In an ordinary day, we subconsciously are subject to plenty of sounds including conversations, songs, and the general bustle of life. Many of the things we hear are not on the same frequency we are on. We must continuously filter out the unnecessary to keep peace of mind and mental focus. Sound like a diet? As a child, I grew up in Oakland, Ca. Gangsta rap was alive and well. Not knowing what Gin was, we spoke about sipping juice on the kindergarten playground. I remember watching Tupac videos with my parents. Twenty-plus years later and I am not a Gin drinker, but I can comprehend and feel what spirit Tupac’s recordings created within myself.

Account for every dollar If possible, we could all put some kind of GPS or tracking device on our dollars. This way, it would be a lot easier to track where all your dollars were going. Before I wrote this article, some Notorious B.I.G. played randomly on the radio- a famous song where Big spoke about his life before fame. I had not picked up on the direct references he so laid out in the past, probably because of the infamous East Coast vs.West Coast separation. Today, the style itself has dragged out and probably unknowingly copied. When frequently about the past and the actions one once took part in -paired with the influence of one’s modern luxuries or lifestyle, the message can easily muddled. Do we subconsciously glorify the lives or actions of violent and malicious people, allowing them to contaminate our psyche or is the music harmless? Are heartbreak songs fueling divorce? The analysis and effects may vary, but we must consider the thought if we can recall songs from our childhoods. January-February 2019

Tweak your money mindset I know most of us to be heavy spenders. To bring things to light, by 2017, the buying power of African Americans was somewhere around $1.3 trillion. This only proved that African Americans were consuming a lot more than they owned. This is not enough. However, this is not always a wise move. Think of it as putting all your eggs in one basket. What will you do should you lose that one job? The trick here is to have at least five streams of income if possible. So, should one fail you, you will still have other streams of profit to fall back on? This money mistake is more common among the millennials who, on top of piling up debts, are not always aware of their credit scores. It has also caught many families up in the web of piling up the debt which keeps the credit card balances high

Life happens. I have connected and spoken to thousands of people all over the country.When talking to these individuals that want to improve their credit situation, I always ask for the background information how they got there. I want to have an understanding and then be able to guide them to put in place preventative measures so it won’t happen again. Here is what I have found as the top causes for bad credit.
A good portion of African Americans doesn’t have life insurance which is a risky move. However, not having life insurance can put you in hot soup especially with your health. You never know when you may fall ill and need to cough up serious cash you may not have. Or to protect your dependent kids, spouses, and parents if you die. Having life insurance, even at a small amount takes the pressure off of family members who left to take care of your funeral arrangements and estate.

Studies show that many families of color are always financially responsible for their family members. I have known many family’s members that have financially support either some of their family member or unemployed friend. Doing this, in most instances, end up harming the families that financially support their loved ones. As they never really have enough cash left to save or do other important things like paying down debt.

Getting Free & Breaking the cycle With less than perfect credit, it can seem impossible to get ahead. Because of the low score, the interest rates are high and in the state of Maryland the highest interest rate is 24%. Lenders make a fortune off of individuals with bad credit. Another trick that lenders have is to be more interested in getting you into a car than helping you restore your credit score. I’ve heard stories of clients who purchased a car from a “spot” that was low quality and had a high-interest rate on the car.The car went up on them, and they gave it back because they couldn’t afford to fix it. Now they are In a bigger hole with a repossession reporting on their credit. There are endless scenarios.
6. Not saving for retirement
Everybody grows old at some point. And you find that many black Americans don’t value or take full advantage of the 401(k) plans. Studies and reports show that many black American families have very low to no retirement savings at all. From the moment you start working, it is essential that you learn all the ways to save and budget your money to prevent making any of the money mistakes mentioned above. Do this, and you will have a stress-free financial life ahead of you.

3. Loss of job/income is the number one reason I’ve observed for issues with the credit score. Dependency on credit cards harms the credit score especially when they are near the limit. Using a credit card to its full limit affects negatively 30% of the credit score. Late payments negatively affect 35% of the credit score and once behind in payments it is never easy to make the payment history current. Loss or reduction in income shows the consumer the negative impact it has on the credit score and combined with maxed the credit card 65% of the credit score has become negative.
1. Lack of education and generational curse of bad credit... We know that most schools don’t teach about credit and finances. Something like credit holds so much power we all need yet uninformed. In some communities and families, grandma had terrible credit, and mom had terrible credit, and because of them having lousy credit, the use of the child’s credit and destroyed before they were even 18 years old.

Relevance of the Black Church
R
egardless of how you look at it, there is no better place to get inspiration and better moral teachings than the church. The black church has its roots deeply rooted in family values and ethics coupled with spiritual fulfillment and understanding the scripture. However, there has been an alarming trend regarding the relevance of black churches today, and the reason for this is the change in cultural values and pillars of the black culture. The youth has always been the pillars of the church because we consider them future leaders. Having survived over 100 years, the black church is now witnessing low attendance in decades because of the clear generational gap that exists.
The Numbers
The Pew Research Center conducted a study to find out the trend of youth attending black churches and they found a shift in the stats when compared to previous decades. 34.5% of Americans who were born between 1981-1996 had no firm religious affiliation, meaning not dedicated to a church or attend one entirely. Nikkie Mayo and Angela Davis interviewed Rev. James Clinkscales reporting in their article on Greenville News Website. Rev. Clinkscales acknowledged that the trend 37 Inspire One

had shifted and it had become more challenging to attract the young generation to church. The majority of the members of the congregation were elderly, 35 and above while his church reported deficient numbers of young members. The reverend blames it all on technology that has been a critical hindrance to preserving the traditional church values. The mobile phone and the Internet distract the younger generation. Clinkscales explains that most of them carry their mobile phones to churches and read the scripture out of the apps on the mobile phones, after that, they pay no attention to the pastor and instead go on Facebook, integral and other social media platforms.

To preserve the value and tradition of the black churches, the younger generational values shaped early. Imagine the children of the modern generation and their attitude towards the church? For me, I believe it would be unserviceable, even convincing them of the ‘Truth.’ The ones to blame now are the parents and not
the brainwashed youth who do not reckon the ethical values of the traditional church practices. To salvage the situation, I believe the church needs to focus on measures readily accepted by the generation today. It is sad, but realistically, the roots will have to evolve and embrace technology. Rather than expect the youth to observe similar traditional church practices, the church can focus on App development and preach using new measures. Today, the youth embrace music fashion and technology. With the struggle to achieve equality and racial fairness, there is a lot that the media focuses on. Perhaps, the way forward is to integrate social media and the church. he Black Church continues to play an integral social and political role in the African American community, often doubling as an economic institution. To better understand the strong relationship between economy and the black church, we must look back in history. Churches and their organizations often convened to make major financial decisions for the church. The most prominent of these are life insurance companies and black owned banks which made it clear that economic refinement is tied to the central role of the Church. It is hard to deny that the church is the most politically influential institution in our community. Their work has received the respect and recognition of communities both locally and internationally. More important is the independence of the Black Church really and the primary support from Black communities. Collecting an annual income of over $2 billion, the church represents the largest collection of wealth that can fuel economic development of our communities. This means that even rural churches can play an important role in providing job opportunities and launching businesses for their members. It is important to use these funds sensibly by quasi-religious institutions, by investing in startups spearheaded by African American businessmen and students. The Black Church has the funds to make a more powerful presence in retail to support needs of black people exclusively. Having this knowledge makes sense to establish a worldwide retail network that sells and buys product from Black owned manufacturing plants, creating powerful import and export systems. Black Churches and their partners can make powerful financial contributions such as creating new financial instruments like banks to revolutionize the black economy. Despite the role that Black Churches can play in the American economy, the institution doesn’t invest strategically. While other ethnic races perceive the Black community under a garb of negative stereotypes, they have managed to capitulate on the free for all African American markets. The irony is that after earning large sums of capital from black markets, the ethnic groups are able to make their financial standings relatively stronger than African communities. Revitalizing black economy is only possible if we were to reevaluate and reroute the money that is spent by all black churches. Inspire One 38

Young People and Church. A Distant Love

omeone loses today, most family and cultural values, especially to the youth. ‘Black millennials’ not left behind and the church has affected by the socio-economic revolution that has made it lose its position in society. To put this into perspective, most youths have considered the church to be a distraction or too boring to attend with some being forced to attend service. However, Tony Marks in 9 Mark’s website explain how wrong this is. He explains that they should not view the church as a social institution because it does not measure its progress in the number of people who attend or judge members based on socio-economic status. The meaning of the church as a spiritual organism given by God Himself needs an understanding of why it is important. While the Black Church has been one of the most valued institutions within the Black community, its value in society is being lost. The number of black youth attending church is dwindling with parents being forced to implement stringed measures to get their chil-

dren to go to church. They estimate that by 2050 when compared to 1990, the number of people attending the church will have decreased by 50%. The number is not at all surprising because today, only 26% attend the church regularly (Thomas, 2017). Out of the number, they compose a great percentage of the black community who consider the church as a part of their culture. This culture is at risk of getting lost because more black millennials are not attending church as their grandparents used to.

Most of them term the church as boring or not adding any ‘value’ to their lifestyle. This broadly blamed on the internet and the social media platforms that have somewhat made life ‘interestingly easier’. Their system differs from they built whatever foundations on. Since there is an obvious age gap and most pastors are elderly, getting through to the black youth is a task. The youth today only speak a certain language and attracted to people they consider role models, most of them who are on the Internet. I believe there is a disconnect between the millennials and the pioneers of religion. To add to this, pastors mostly dwell on the church tradition that uses emotionalism, judgement, and classism to send their message; none of these factors resonate with the youth. Therefore, with the church lagging in the trends to communicate with the youth, and its stagnated strategies of spreading the word, more black youth leave the church. There is a gap in ways of offering salvation and convincing a more educated society on the morals and vices within society. People learn and see the world’s evils every day and immoral behavior becoming a familiar trend. The church has a lot to do in a society where sex, alcohol, and violence are tools to promote popularity rather than condemnation. References Carter, T. Here we are at the beginning of a new year, and the most pervasive question at the forefront of my mind is, “Where we do we go from here?” 2018 has ended, 2019 has begun, and how we proceed in January will determine our destination and our preoccupations, between here and there. I encourage you to allow wisdom to lead the way as you face each day and take each step towards your divine destiny. There are several keys I could share with you to help you along your journey, but none of them can compare to the next sentence you’re about to read. Give God premium prioritization this year. Make God your most important relationship. Matthew 6:33 (KJV) 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. If you’re a believer, it’s safe to say you know God but declaring you know God and declaring you are seeking God and His righteousness foremost, are two drastically different declarations. If I were you, I’d declare the latter, and then I’d go after God, like never. I’ve discovered that Matthew 6:33 is a master key for not only navigating life but also for living life to the fullest. It’s our seeking (of God, and his righteousness) that triggers God’s giving. God is generous when He is the center of our focus and our faith. He’ll continue to add to us, as long as the increase doesn’t cause us to decrease, in our pursuit of His will, His way, and His word. When we put out trust in God, God can and will transfer His treasures into our account, because He has found us trustworthy. That’s why this is a master key. Give God premium prioritization this year. Make God your most important relationship.
Shift Your Gift You may or may not have heard the Biblical reference “a man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.” (Proverbs 18:16 NKJV) This means that a person’s gift/talent will grant them access to doorways to opportunities. I believe everyone has an Canaan Baker, Life Coach innate gift or talent. God design this gift to be the answer to someone else’s problem. If you can answer their question, you can monetize your gift. It’s a little easier for people who have product oriented gifts to make money than service-oriented ones. People like things that are tangible. If you have a service-oriented gift, look into ways to packaging it more tangibly. For instance, I am a life coach, but life coaches come a dime a dozen. I have always dreamed of being a full-time entrepreneur, but to do so, I need to monetize my craft. I pushed and pushed service-oriented content, but it attracted no more clients. However, once I produced tangible products, I could capture a broader audience. Adding products to your service takes time as it should. You need for these products to capture the essence of your brand. Don’t rush to push out products to gain more clients. Take the time to think and brainstorm about the message you want to convey to your audience. Some products can send a very different message to potential clients. You want to be careful about the content you produce. I suggest working with a brand manager or marketing expert. (I worked with a marketing person and will share their contact information if you’d like it.) People like them can look at the big picture from a different January-February 2019
perspective than you and I. Many times we focus or looking at things one way. A good marketing or branding agent well versed in a variety of techniques to help you expand your personal brand. They will bring a fresh new set of eyes to something you may have been staring at for months! Producing products is a great way to attract more clients, but it’s not the only way. Branding, marketing agents and even life coaches can also help you think of other ways to build a broader audience. Compare your business to a gear shift. Sometimes you will need place it in park. You must research and study your audience, even after you’ve had a great quarter. I recommend setting aside days and/or blocks of time where this is something you do regularly. This will only help you become more reflective and in touch with your audience. There are other times where you must put it into reverse. You must backtrack and look over your progress. See what went wrong and compared it with what went right. There will always be room for improvement so don’t sell yourself short. You also must place yourself in drive. Drive will more than likely be your default setting. It’s the grind you must keep yourself going. Drive is necessary because you keep yourself in drive even when conditions may change. You may lose clients along the way, but if you remain in drive, even after that happens, you have a better chance of gaining more. If you stay stuck in park after a bad quarter or year, you’ll never be able to go forward again. Sometimes you must shift into overdrive. Overdrive is necessary when the conditions transform. You’ll need overdrive to compensate for lost time and to make huge deadlines. Overdrive can do what drive alone can’t. You may need to burn the midnight oil or reach out to friends or colleagues to assist you with a significant project. This shifting into overdrive looks like. arried and unmarried partners experience relationship problems from time to time and at some point, separate as a solution to never-ending issues. Some argue for some time on the best solution to solve marital problems without separating, but there has been no alternative to divorce. However, merely separating may not solve all matrimonial problems because there have been cases of partners continuously fighting over other factors like properties or custody of their children. To fully understand the impact and remedies to separation, it is crucial to understand how divorce unfolds. Various factors can lead to partners developing offensive behavior towards their better half, and while sometimes divorce may not be a solution, in some relationships, it may be a remedy. Marriages thrive on understanding and partnership, and when trust is no longer in a relationship, it may be time for one to move on. Despite the sad truth, some partners cope with periods of stress in their relationship, and when they do, their relationship becomes stronger. The same can be said in about abusive relationships where one partner, mostly men, may be emotionally or physically abusing their spouse. These relationships when not ended in time, may lead to detrimental effects and cause harm to the entire family. When couples move into marriages, it is obvious they do not fully know their partners and only get to discover more about them the more they stay together. While it may be advisable to seek external January-February 2019
help when problems occur in marriages, we find some solutions best originate between intimate partners.

The effects of divorce mostly realized when children are present, and therefore opponents of the topics advocate for an alternative. While the parents may be strong enough to understand the process and what it would mean, some children do not adapt. Wayne Parker on the Very Well Family website explains that up to 50% of children in America witness their parents break up in their lifetime and a further 25% go through a second marriage breakup. The statistics also explain that
witnessing divorce is realized before the child becomes of age (under 18 years). Parker also reveals that children from divorced families are more likely to develop health complications, and up to 50% are either diagnosed with stress or mental challenges. This would undoubtedly lead to a lot of emotional support from either/both parents to help them into and through adulthood. Despite the fact that most individuals go into marriage with unrealistic goals, divorce is still not a solution, and the problem may not necessarily be from one spouse. Just like both parties had preferences before marriage is the same way they hold ambitions and desires during the entire relationships. There should be compromise and maximum support without one partner acting or being superior to the other. In most cases, divorce is caused by failure to establish proper communication, intimacy and money problems. The question, “is divorce a solution?”, maybe better answered by explaining the fact that most divorcees who go into their next marriages end up repeating the process all over again. If you can solve the problem and talk to an expert, family or friends for help, there may be other solutions other than divorce. However, before you consider going through the process, it is vital to weight all your options until you view divorce as the only way out. How do you even describe such a powerful feeling? I think Gandhi put it best when he said “where there is love, there is life[1]”. Because truthfully, love permeates every single aspect of our lives — romantic love, a parent’s love, love of material possessions, etc.

What about Interracial Love?... Mic drop.
There’s something about interracial love that seems to divide the people, it is, still love, right? So what’s the problem? This article isn’t here to tell you whether interracial love is “right” or “wrong.” In fact, it’s here to look at reasons people think it may be right or wrong. Then you as an intellectual can decide on your own.
Here for it: Love is Love:
To love and to be loved is both a blessing and a gift; there are people in this world who will never honestly know love in its purest form. So what right do people have to decide what respect is the “right” kind of love? Are a red apple and a green apple, not both still apples?
Skin Deep:
Melanin is a pigment[2] in our skin that is the main reason people who live in colder or warmer climates have different skin tones. That’s it. This is literally the only reason skin color differs from community to community - no aliens. No conspiracy. No champion race. Just evolution. 43 Inspire One

RELATIONSHIPS Therefore, there should be no side eyes or prejudice when two people of different skin colors fall in love because essentially they are the same. They happen to come from a line of ancestors who grew up in different parts of the word - but the same world.

We live in a white culture dominated world.[3] Because of this, some insecure individuals choose partners with white or lighter skin as a source of validation and selfhate. Parading their lighter other halves as “better” than those who do not have the same color skin. Thus, knocking down people of color and reinforcing negative stereotypes that plague society today, e.g. “the lighter, the better”.[4]
What’s wrong with your own?
In America today, 18% of African-Americans will marry somebody outside of their race.[5] This begs the question - black people see something wrong with other blacks? It is arguable that while other races date outside of their own why then does it seem to be such a favorable stance in the black community? Your other half reflects you - literally so it would make more sense if they were the same skin color as you. Whether you are for or against interracial love still respect other people’s decisions and ways of life. Love of another is a very personal emotion and is something that only the individuals involved can honestly weigh in on. Ironically, the sport was not a big hit with black students, and some referred to it as a feminine game compared to the rugged football sport. Edwin’s vision was to use the sport of basketball as a tool to reach out to individuals in public-health and civil rights. Edwin believes that the organization of the game would combat the thoughts of negative stereotypes that blacks were incapable of excelling on the college level. Also, he wanted to use the sport to gain an edge with northern white colleges by having black students receive athletic scholarships. He reasoned that in sports, unlike politics and business, the black race would get a fair chance to succeed. In 1906, Edwin Henderson, Garnet Wilkinson of the M Street High School, W. A. Joiner of Howard University, W. A. Decatur and Robert Mattingly of Armstrong Technical High School started the Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association of Middle Atlantic States. They created this amateur sports organization to encourage com-
petition among athletes in track and field and basketball. While the movement to start the athletic association was progressing, other basketball teams emerged in YMCAs, churches and public schools. In addition, basketball in the urban area of NewYork City gaining attention among more black people. In 1907, the 1st independent Black basketball team was created and called the Smart Set Athletic Club of Brooklyn. Then on December 18, 1908, the 1st inter-city competition took place in Washington D.C. The contest placed the Smart Set Athletic Club versus the Crescent Athletic Club, in which the Smart

The first all-black team, the New York All-Stars, formed in 1910 by St. Christopher Club manager Major A. Hart., was the first team that earned money for playing basketball. Hart encouraged the players to make the game more about the sport and less about the quarrels and negative tendencies that arise from players of the game of basketball. Hart’s vision for the game of basketball was to treat it as entertainment to gain revenue. In 1922, the McMahon brothers started the Commonwealth Big 5 to play in Harlem at the Commonwealth Casino on East 135th Street. A year later, Robert Douglas, a resident of New York City from the British West Indies, founded the “Rens”- the Renaissance Big Five. The Commonwealth Big 5 and the McMahon’s were good teams but didn’t bring large crowds during the games. This left the Rens as the sport’s top team in all the basketball regardless of color. The sport remained divided from 1904 — when basketball was first introduced to African Americans on a wide scale organized basis — until the racial integration of the National Basketball League in the 1940s and the National Basketball Association in 1950. The period in between became known as the Black Fives Era, when dozens of all-black teams emerged, flourished, and excelled. With definite plans, collective purpose, and relentless pursuit, they kept climbing to higher levels of success on increasingly more prominent stages, in front of ever-growing audiences. All the while they fostered hope, aspiration, pride, unity, pragmatism, and self-esteem among African Americans during a time — the most pivotal period in the black history of the last century — when those attributes were prerequisites for sheer survival. The men and women of the Black Fives Era were true basketball pioneers whose desire just to play their best and innovate the game opened doors for generations of African American players. inal seconds of the last game at Cole Field House against Virginia, facing a decision of whether to shoot. As the time counts down, Andre Collins takes the shot and hits the 3 pointer before the sound of the buzzer. This may have been the last shot at Cole Field House but not Andre recent winning move. Andre Collins, a native of Crisfield, MD has returned to the Eastern Shore after a long, exciting life abroad playing basketball. Living the life many of our youth basketball players only dream of, Andre has played in Italy and other European countries while spending over 10 years abroad with his team. The chance of the lifetime of some would say but modest Andre felt it was just the plan designed by God for his life. Now back on the Eastern Shore, he has taken on the responsibility of coaching James M. Bennett Boys Basketball and opening a state-of-the-art gym in Parsonsburg, MD. Andre’s primary motivation for building the gym and leading the Clippers was a vow he made to give back to the community in which they raised him. Youth of all ages assemble in the gym on various days to get pointers and skills from the Eastern Shore superstar. What’s even more impressive about Mr. Collins is his humble nature and love for children especially his own. This was one of the significant factors to guide him to come out of playing basketball and spend valuable time with his children. Andre desires to reach out to those youths that has a unique desire to play the game of basketball. He wants to give these youths a chance in the sport by coaching and training them in a way he knows will benefit them in the long run. January-February 2019
What an exciting time to be a coach and to offer knowledge to such young athletes and help improve their skills and basketball game. Mr. Collins pours into these students because he feels that the Eastern Shore has talented youth just like anywhere else in the world. He believes that if he offers his advice, experiences, and knowledge to the youth whether on his team or at the gym, he will reach players. He wants to help build the love of basketball in the area and support the youth dream for it to found the game on skill and passion. Being back on the Eastern Shore is a different feeling for the College S u p e r s t a r, and the welcoming of his return has been unique. Yet he doesn’t harp on the fact that relationships have built again and focuses on the job at hand, the youth. His commitment to the youth of the shore is refreshing for one main reason which is sacrifice. The opportunity he experienced through the spotlight and life abroad pushed him to come back to his roots where it all began and helped children reach their potential. This act is admirable and unique because many would not have given up the lifestyle to return to such a rural area. As a young man coming from the eastern shore, he remembers that many people get intimidated with the game once leaving the shore. “I feel that my experience can help players understand not to resist being intimidated of the game and just play,” remarked Collins. He wants the youth to take the knowledge they have gained and apply that valuable knowledge as they reach college and maybe even a professional. It is great to see a humble young man with the skills and experience like Andre Collins to return to the shore and help these young basketball players with their skills and attitude. He believes that the shore youth can and will make a difference in the game of basketball. Inspire One 48

Kaepernick: Is the Movement Still Relevant Colin Kaepernick
rose to public fame when he knelt during the national anthem before a game against the Green Bay Packers. We can describe his reasons for kneeling in his own words, “I will not stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” It was this simple statement that turned the professional footballer’s career upside down but turned him into one of the most influential activist athletes since the likes of Muhammad Ali and Billie Jean King. Known as charismatic world champions for their exceptional prowess in their respective fields, and when they have something to say, it carried power and sentiment. We often compare Kaepernick’s resolute to Muhammad Ali. Both men took to extreme measures to remain true to their beliefs even if that came at the cost of their careers. K a e p e r n i c k ’s actions would later impact his teammates, sparking a country-wide debate about the racial divide in the US. NFL football from then on became embroiled in controversial issues, which is probably why Kaepernick opted out of his contract. Two years later, and the Kaepernick movement is still going reasonably strong. It has made one thing resoundingly clear that Black Americans are always being treated as second-class citizens. But by challenging the spirit of the national anthem, Kaepernick was inadvertently choosing a strongly opinionated side, one some socialites can misinterpret that as a sign of disrespect to 49 Inspire One
our veterans. Kaepernick and his teammates believe they are exercising their right to free speech even if it comes across as a breach of etiquette. The Kaepernick movement exposed how easy it is to get under someone’s skin just because you have a different opinion. If we’ve learned anything from this movement, it’s that the only way forward is to have more tolerance to exceptional views of other people, even if that goes against ours.
