Dear Friends of KCRep,

There are certain stories that stay with you long before you ever have the chance to tell them. The Wizard of Oz has been that for me — a dream carried quietly, waiting for the right moment and the right people to bring it to life. And I’ve come to understand, like Dorothy, that the journey is everything — that who you travel with is what gives it meaning.

This production means so much to me because of the people on this journey. Our wildly talented Kansas City cast has met this story with imagination, humor, musicality, and deep generosity — creating something both grounded and full of wonder. Our youth cast, with their infectious energy and wholehearted commitment, has filled the process with joy, reminding us of the bravery it takes to step into the unknown.

The epic and lush production you are about to see is the result of a remarkable collaboration between our Oz designers and KCRep’s worldclass production teams, who have invested their talents and thousands of hours of craft and labor to build a world that feels both expansive and intimate — crafted entirely by hand, just for our production at KCRep. That spirit continues through the inventive puppetry of Simple Mischief, whose work brings humor, surprise, and soul to Oz — from the thrilling menace of the flying monkeys to our adorable Toto.

At the heart of it all is my collaboration with my brother-sons of PigPen Theatre Co., whose extraordinary new musical arrangements, created expressly for us at KCRep, make these timeless songs feel immediate, communal, and alive — emerging organically from our actormusician ensemble.

At its core, The Wizard of Oz is a journey in search of courage, heart, and wisdom —and the quiet revelation that these gifts have lived within us all along, brought to light by those who walk beside us.

This collaborative initiative includes four arts organizations: the Great Plains Theatre Commons (GPTC), Tofte Lake Center, Tulsa Artists Fellowship, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep). Each organization hosts a weeklong residency for a selected Native playwright and their work over the course of a year. Each residency takes place in a different region of the country, offering a unique focus and environment to support the development of the playwright’s work.

HISTORY

KCRep enters it’s 62nd season as source of inspiration to thousands of our nation’s best artists and to millions of Americans in Kansas City and beyond.

Missouri Repertory Theatre was founded in 1964 by Dr. Patricia A. McIlrath, who is among a select few pioneers of the regional theater movement who believed that theater could change the world and could change our town. Kansas City’s citizens continue to benefit from Dr. Mac’s passionate commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, education, and community transformation. Under her direction, KC’s theatre fans enjoyed many memorable shows, including an unforgettable 1983 production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Dr. Mac’s vision for providing professional experience to early career artists continues today through our partnership with UMKC.

Following Dr. Mac’s retirement in 1985, George Keathley was

appointed as Artistic Director. During his tenure, and through his partnership with Executive Director James D. Costin, MRT was established as the pinnacle of artistic achievement for local theatre artists, creating a legacy of excellence through work in the civic community and with legendary MRT productions such as Dracula and Richard III.

In 2000, Peter Altman joined MRT as Artistic Director for a sevenyear tenure. His vision included laying the groundwork to promote the city more aggressively as a center for nationally recognized theatre artists, and he spearheaded changing the theatre’s name to Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2006 to help achieve this goal. He also helped create KCRep’s second permanent performance venue, Copaken Stage, in Kansas City’s downtown Power & Light District.

Eric Rosen was hired as Producing Artistic Director in 2007. During his tenure, he was instrumental in

cultivating a national reputation and brand for KCRep and the city as a destination for reimagined classics such as Into the Woods and Evita, and critically acclaimed new works, including Clay, Venice, and Between the Lines.

In 2013, KCRep returned to the co-CEO structure when Rosen was partnered with Executive Director Angela Lee Gieras. Together, they led the company through a successful campaign for, and renovation of Spencer Theatre, crafted a five-year, $5 million campaign that increased investment in audiences, new works, and education, and rebranded the organization.

In 2019, director, producer, and educator Stuart Carden joined KCRep as its fifth Artistic Director. Deeply committed to centering KCRep in this region, Stuart believes the arts play a crucial role in strengthening communities. With an eye towards creating transformative theater experiences

for all, Stuart brought KCRep productions to the grounds of the World War I Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and Roanoke Park. Further expanding our reach, in 2022 Stuart launched KCRep for All, our expansive community tour that takes KCRep to community centers, libraries, and other public spaces all over the region. He strives to provide greater access to our art form and to reflect the passions, curiosities, and stories of the diverse communities that make KC such a vibrant city.

In 2024, Angela Gieras departed KCRep after 12 years, and in 2025, Jeremy Dewey joined KCRep as Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management, operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

Stuart Carden is the Artistic Director of Kansas City Repertory Theatre, where, alongside Executive Director Jeremy Dewey and KCRep’s leadership team, he is leading the organization into a new chapter of artistic innovation, community engagement, and institutional growth. Now in his sixth season at KCRep, he has expanded the theatre’s civic impact through signature initiatives including KCRep for All, a free community tour across the Kansas City metro, and American Crossroads, a program dedicated to stories reflecting the region’s

Jeremy Dewey (He/Him) is thrilled to be joining KCRep as the new Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management,operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

Prior to joining KCRep in June, Dewey was Chief of Staff at the renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), where he guided senior executives in the implementation of BAM’s strategic five-year institutional vision of impact, growth, and sustainability, including capital projects. He is also Founder and Senior Impact Advisor of Dewey

complexity and vitality. His leadership is grounded in the belief that theatre is a cultural and civic commons — creating transformative experiences for all.

Prior to KCRep, Stuart held leadership positions at City Theatre Company and Writers Theatre in Chicago. As a director, his work has been seen at leading theatres nationwide, including The Old Globe, Goodman Theatre, Writers Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, People’s Light, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and New Victory Theater. His productions are known for

muscular storytelling, inventive staging, and emotional depth. At KCRep, his directing credits include Once, Little Shop of Horrors, Peter Pan and Wendy, The Old Man and The Old Moon, and Mary’s Wedding, which was performed on the lawn of the WWI Museum, as well as the music and storytelling festival Ghost Light. Stuart champions ambitious, artist-driven work grounded in community. His Wizard of Oz exemplifies this vision — an actor-musician, highimagination reimagining—and he will direct Come From Away next season. Most importantly, Stuart is director and dad to 14-yearold twins, Dashiell and Griffin.

Impact Group (DIG), a consulting group dedicated to empowering cultural and educational organizations, to dream ambitiously, design strategically, and deliver meaningful change. Select clients have included Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Opera, National Dance Institute, National Blues Museum, and the 92nd Street Y. Dewey’s extensive experience in nonprofit leadership also includes previous roles the Center of Creative Arts (COCA) in St. Louis, New York City Ballet, DHR International, and Kansas Audio-Reader Network, providing him with a holistic perspective across arts administration, fundraising, and operational management.

A passionate theatermaker at heart, Dewey co-founded Trusty

Sidekick Theater Company, a celebrated New York Citybased ensemble specializing in original theatrical experiences for young audiences and families. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Kansas, and earned dual master’s degrees in Business Administration and Arts Administration from Southern Methodist University.

Raised on a farm in Kansas, Dewey has a lifelong love of gardening and the outdoors, which shaped his appreciation for patience, care, and growth. He and his husband, Dr. Gary Parker, have been together for 14 years and share a love of the arts, travel, and time with their dog, Benton. They are excited to make their new home in Kansas City.

Q & A with SULLY RATKE

Interview by JANA LILES Director of Marketing & Communications

Q: What was your overall vision for the costumes in The Wizard of Oz, and how did you balance honoring tradition with bringing something fresh to this production?

A: The costume design is really balanced between the polarity of the two witches: Glinda the Good, and The Wicked Witch of the West.

When I think about what grounds me and guides me on my own journey of becoming, I think of the natural world, and the unseen web of our ancestors who support me with patience and wisdom on my way. Glinda’s costumes were inspired by earth, water, and wind. She represents the natural beauty and grace manifested in age and wisdom.

The Wicked Witch, on the other hand, makes herself miserable with a restless greed and need for MORE (more power, more money, more status, more ruby red SHOES!). Her costumes are based more on the artificial and rigid architectures of the structures and systems that keep us feeling unsatisfied, desperate for eternal youth, and running from the hungry and ever-watching eyes of power and need.

Once these two poles were established, the rest of the design fell into place between them. Those costumes that tend more towards Glinda feel more organic and more natural — more earthy, hand-made, and uneven. Those that tend more towards the Wicked Witch, on the other hand, are dominated by those wicked and watchful eyes, and the fashion of progress and futurism.

Q: Were there any specific themes or ideas you wanted the costumes to communicate beyond the story itself?

A: Particularly in Munchkinland, we did our best to promote the concept of upcycling. Most theatres are overbrimming with storage from past shows. We spend big money and big effort to build beautiful costumes that only have life for the short period while the shows stay running. After that, they are packed away and often never resurface. With the help of Jenny Green and her fantastic Costume Shop at KCRep, we did our best to reuse and recycle as many materials and garments from storage as possible. Particularly in the munchkinland designs, we want to convey to the audience how much whimsy and magic is available at our fingertips when we can creatively reimagine the materials that we already have at hand!

Q: How closely did you collaborate with the director, scenic designer, and lighting designer to ensure a cohesive visual world?

A: This show was extremely collaborative. Our director (and artistic director at KCRep), Stuart Carden, is particularly good at bringing together extremely talented design collaborators. We spent countless hours in meetings, dreaming and coordinating the many fantastical design elements of this show. This means direction, scenic, lighting, sound, music, projections, props, puppets, and costumes. When we do it right, our ideas start to blend and become indistinguishable. Is Glinda’s giant gown a scenic element, a prop, or a costume? Are the monkeys costumes, props, or puppets? Are the glowing jitterbugs lights, costumes, or puppets? The answer: YES!

With so much crossover, not only do we have the work of dreaming up our ideas, but then must solve the puzzle with the KCRep shops of who is building what elements and how. Many thanks and appreciation are due to Grace Hudson, our excellent production manager, for helping us coordinate and solve those logistical questions in order to build a beautiful show.

Q: What were some of the biggest technical or logistical challenges — quick changes, durability, or special effects?

A: This particular production presents the challenge of actor/ musician/puppeteers.

This means that many hands are needed — even during transitions — to play instruments and work puppets rather than to change clothes! We worked very closely and meticulously with the directing team and the musical composers to coordinate who would be available to wear what, and when. It is a tedious and finicky puzzle to solve, but very satisfying when we get all the cogs working correctly!

Q: What excites you most about seeing your designs come to life in front of a live audience?

A: I love seeing the designs go from the drawing board to the stage! There are so many steps to making that happen. But when we finally get to tech rehearsals, it is such a treat to hold up the drawings and then see them realized in the flesh!

Q: What do you hope Kansas City audiences take away from the visual world you’ve helped create?

My secret delight is the backstage life of the costumes! I love imagining the shenanigans that take place with actors running around in green unitards in the dressing rooms, or sprinting to their places in glowing striped pajamas and bug masks. When the costumes live out of context of the story, they become a different vision of hilarity and absurdism. These little unseen stories that never make the stage are my absolute delight while I’m designing a whimsical show like this one.

A: Dorothy’s adventure could have easily ended once she obtained the ruby slippers. Glinda reminds us that all she ever had to do was click her heels, and off home she’d go! Instead, she must endure a delicious adventure of thrill and silliness and FUN. I love this message. The point of the story is to delight in the journey. Even when it’s a little scary. Even when it’s unsettling. There are friends to be made, and wonder and magic to be lived in, and without it, the story would be over as soon as it started. ENJOY your adventure! Even when it gets a little dark. That’s the point.

ZACHERY GARNER

(Toto/Lead Puppeteer/Ensemble) (He/ Him) Zachery Garner is a Puppeteer and Actor. Zachery has performed with Mesner Puppet Theater (now called What If Puppets) in Snow White, The Dinosaur Show, The Nativity, The Shipwreck Show, and Anansi the Spider. Zachery went to Kansas City Kansas Community College to study theater, where he performed in Into The Woods (Lead Puppeteer, The Steward, Little Red’s Grandma). While in college Zachery landed a role in Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, a Harry Potter parody at the Coterie Theater (J. Finch Fletchley/Ensemble). In 2021, Zachery participated in a three-week puppetry workshop at The Jim Henson Company. In 2022, Zachery performed Snowy Day at the Center Of Puppetry Arts. In 2023, Zachery helped to workshop a puppet musical at The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, called The Scarecrow by Anthony Michael Stokes - a winner of a Henson Foundation grant in 2022. MANON HALLIBURTON

(Miss Almira Gulch/The Wicked Witch of the West) Manon Halliburton was last seen at the Rep in Twelfth Night as ‘Malvolia’ Before that it was August Osage County, directed by former artistic director, Eric Rosen. She has been a regional theatre actress for over 25 years and has worked all over the country. Theatre credits include, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Chester Theatre Company, Riverside Theatre NYC, Greenwich Street Theatre NYC, Unicorn Theatre, K.C.A.T., Music Theatre Heritage. She has also appeared on Law and Order and had a recurring role on HBO’s hit series The Sopranos. Manon will be filming an independent feature film here in Kansas City this spring based off of The Wizard of Oz, where again... she’s playing ‘The Wicked Witch’. (Author) Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) was an American author of children’s books, best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900. One of the most successful novels in American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sold out instantly, became a cultural sensation, and sold over three million copies before entering the public domain in 1956. Baum wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a host of other works, including 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and 55 novels. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen. Baum’s writings remarkably anticipated innovations including television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk, action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane’s Nieces at Work).

(New Orchestrations & Arrangements) PigPen Theatre Co. began creating their unique brand of theatre, music, and film as freshmen at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in 2007. They have since performed, produced, and licensed their original plays in New York City and all over the world – earning them critic’s picks from The New York Times, Time Out New York, Chicago Tribune, Chicago SunTimes, Boston Globe, and many more, ranking them in the top ten theatrical events of 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2016. They were the first

group to win the NYC Fringe Festival’s top honor for a play two years in a row (2010/11) and have gone on to win IRNE (2012, 2015) and Jeff Awards (2014) for their theatrical productions. In 2016, Sir Trevor Nunn invited PigPen to be a part of his first American acting company for a production of Shakespeare’s Pericles. PigPen’s debut album, Bremen, was named #10 album of the year in The Huffington Post’s 2012 Grammy preview sending PigPen on tour playing to sold-out crowds across the country. American Songwriter premiered their follow-up EP, The Way I’m Running, in 2013 while the band was playing a series of concerts that became one of the most popular residencies of the past decade at the legendary Schuba’s Tavern in Chicago. In 2015, PigPen released their sophomore album, Whole Sun, performed at Mumford & Sons’ return to the Gentlemen of the Road Festival, and made their feature film debut in Jonathan Demme’s Ricki and the Flash, starring Meryl Streep. In 2018, PigPen announced that they are creating two stage musicals based on beloved novels: The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo (in partnership with Universal Theatrical Group) and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (in collaboration with Rick Elice). The Tale of Despereaux world premiered at The Old Globe in the summer of 2019 and transferred to Berkeley Repertory Theatre to close out the year. 2021 saw PigPen premiere their ongoing interactive theatrical experience, The Phantom Folktales, aboard Richard Branson’s groundbreaking cruise line, Virgin Voyages. That summer also marked the beginning of their threeyear residency at New York City’s newest and most unique public park: Little Island. PigPen performed concerts featuring new music, engaged with students and community members, and curated The Storytelling Festival there each season. Water For Elephants opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on March 21st, 2024 and received seven Tony Award® Nominations including Best Musical.

As our world grows more complex, we want to empower young people to feel free and creative, full of confidence and spirit to express themselves and feel strong. We want them to laugh and feel joy, learn about and feel on behalf of others, and know their own value in their world as smart, curious, creative and empowered individuals. KCRep seeks to play a positive role in the life of every student we encounter in a workshop or in the theatre. The arts open up expression, fuel belonging, and make connections. The arts meet the fragile, but deep, spirit of each young person — naturally open-hearted and bright-minded.

Summer Theatre Camp welcomed both middle and high schoolers for wild and wonderful opportunities to explore theatre through scene work, mask masking, movement and much more. Taught by professional actors, the joy in the room was palpable and meaningful. They hate to say goodbye!

7,200 students — from 3rd grade through college from all over the region — saw a show as a part of the Student Matinee Series during KCRep’s 2024/25 season. Over 40% benefitted from our STARS fund. Without exception, a morning field trip experience is rich and alive. Over 220 students from Kansas City, KS saw Nathan Louis Jackson’s beautiful play about a KCK family, Broke-ology. The connections and emotions were powerful. The laughter, sighs, tears (yes) and applause for Once, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, A Christmas Carol and Emma were overwhelming. We never know when a song, a character, a sentence or a scene will spark a young heart and mind to understand themselves better. But we are here for it. Always.
