John Cleese is both a versatile comedic actor and a leading business motivator. With the legendary Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers and A Fish Called Wanda, he created a unique comedic style that has inspired countless writers and comedians. Cleese’s influence is also felt in the corporate world as the founder of Video Arts, the world’s largest provider of business training programs. Established in 1972 with three fellow British actors, Video Arts gained an international reputation as the premier source for business know-how. Cleese attributes his success at making hit training programs to his fascination with psychology and his love for teaching and making people laugh. He believes that “humor in training increases retention and decreases anxiety. When the training point is surrounded with humor, it can be readily digested, remembered and applied.” On the lecture stage, Cleese brings his award-winning series of videos to life. His boundless energy and inimitable sense of humor create a hilarious exploration of business basics, from corporate etiquette and customer service to creative thinking and problem solving. “The world’s funniest man” first made his mark as a member of the legendary Monty Python troupe in the 1960s, and has gone on to write, produce, direct and star in some of the greatest comedic hits of the last forty years, even receiving an Oscar nomination for best screenplay for A Fish Called Wanda. But Cleese is far from your garden variety entertainer. From the beginning of his career he has continually parlayed his enormous talents into advancing the political causes he believes in (he is a vocal supporter of the UK’s Labour Party); promoting education (a former Rector of the University of St. Andrews, he served as a professor-at-large at Cornell University from 1991 through 2006); and teaching business skills (the training videos created by his Video Arts production company are viewed by millions of people in the UK and abroad). In fall 2014, Cleese released his New York Times best-selling memoir, So Anyway…. The book shares his ascent in the entertainment world, from his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University (with future Python partner Graham Chapman), to the founding of the landmark comedy troupe that would propel him to worldwide renown. Up next, Cleese will star in the British sitcom Edith for BBC One. This will be his first BBC sitcom since the final season of Fawlty Towers in 1979. Cleese enthralls packed audiences worldwide. The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. In her first effort since 2013’s Another Journey, this summer marked the release of Where My Heart Belongs, a new inspiration gospel album. Knight is a two-time Grammy winner in the gospel category, and Where My Heart Belongs dropped on September 9th from Deseret Book, and recently won an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Gospel Album.” Georgia-born, Knight began performing gospel music at age four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, she won the grand prize on television’s “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” and the following year, her mother Elizabeth Knight created the group consisting of Gladys, her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest. They called themselves The Pips in honor of their cousin/ manager, James Pip Woods. In 1959, Brenda and Elenor left the group, replaced by cousin Edward Patten and friend Langston George. The group was renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips, and following George’s departure in 1962, the classic line-up was in place. The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was just sixteen. With Knight singing lead and The Pips providing lush harmonies and graceful choreography, the group went on to achieve icon status, having recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Top 20 hits, like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and “If I Were Your Woman,” set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s, with Top 10 gold-certified singles like “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye),” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia” established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the premiere pop/R&B vocal ensemble in the world. All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: Good Woman (1991); Just for You (1994); the inspirational Many Different Roads (1999); and At Last (2001). In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Knight published an autobiography, “Between Each Line of Pain and Glory” (a line taken from her million selling recording “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”), in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the annual BET Awards ceremony. Today, Knight and husband William, along with various other members of the family, oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters of Shakeji, Inc., her personal entertainment corporation. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, performer, restaurateur, and businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life. Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes. .19.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures The Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is designed with emergency exits in case of an evacuation. In the event of severe weather, shelter in place inside the hall, not in a lobby area, and await further instructions. In the event of an emergency, the performance will be interrupted. Horns and strobes will sound. Emergency instructions will be delivered from the stage.
Please remain seated as staff use an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of the alarm.* Should an evacuation be necessary, lighted red (Muriel Kauffman Theatre) and green (Helzberg Hall) exit signs will lead patrons to one of eight emergency exit paths.
Patrons with mobility limitations and/or those who are not able to navigate stairs should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring assistance immediately upon their arrival.
Elevators, primary entrances and the Brandmeyer Great Hall staircase are NOT used in the case of an emergency evacuation.

Patron Information PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES Security Screening Policy To ensure the safety and security of our guests, the Kauffman Center has implemented a security screening policy. Any persons and items entering the Kauffman Center are subject to screening. For more information visit kauffmancenter.org/policies. Patrons arriving late are seated at the discretion of the artist and house management. Use of photography equipment or recording devices (video, audio or other medium) is prohibited without written consent. By attending a Kauffman Center performance, patrons give their consent to be photographed or recorded by talent, venue or their contractors. As a courtesy, please silence and put away cell phones and other devices during the performance. If emergency calls are anticipated, please notify house management of your seating location. Emergency calls will be received at our security office, 816.994.7244. For lost articles, please contact our security office, 816.994.7244. Refreshments are available at most events. Food and beverages may not be taken inside Muriel Kauffman Theatre or Helzberg Hall. Complimentary coat check is available for guests year around. Coat check is located near the restrooms on Level 2 just east of the ticket office. Smoking inside the Kauffman Center is strictly prohibited. Designated smoking areas can be found outside both the north and south entrances.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Buy Tickets The Kauffman Center Ticket Office is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Ticket Office holds additional phone hours on Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on performance days. Tickets are always available online at tickets.kauffmancenter.org. All purchases are non-refundable except in the case of a canceled event. Please Don’t Leave Your Seat Empty Donate your tickets for re-sale if you cannot attend a performance. Return tickets to the point-of-purchase organization at least 24 hours before the event to receive a taxdeductible receipt. Public Access Hours and Private Tours The Kauffman Center generally maintains public access hours on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during which visitors may explore Brandmeyer Great Hall. Additionally, private tours led by a trained guide can be scheduled at kauffmancenter.org/tours. Patron Drop-off Locations For your convenience, Kauffman Center offers two passenger drop-off locations at 16th and Central Streets and on the private drive to the south of the building, accessible from Broadway Boulevard. From either drop-off location, drivers will go less than a half block to turn into undergound parking. Additionally, valet parking service is available for most performances. Assistive Listening Devices The Kauffman Center offers Assistive Listening Devices free of charge for patrons who would benefit from amplified and clarified sound. Patrons may exchange an ID card for a device from our trained staff in the Kauffman Center’s Gift Shop in Brandmeyer Great Hall. Each device automatically adjusts to the hall and performance of the patron’s location.

These spaces offer comfortable seating and a monitor to view the live performance, plus sensory items, dimmable lights, and an electrical wall outlet. Patrons may contact a staff member or volunteer to access this space. Changing Tables & Family Restrooms All family restrooms feature infant changing tables. The Mezzanine family restroom features a changing table suitable for children or adults. Patrons needing a universal changing table or an additional private space to tend to medical needs should contact a staff member or volunteer for directions to the First Aid Office. Sensory Kits Patrons who would benefit from comforting sensory resources are invited to exchange an ID card for a Sensory Kit from Coat Check on the Plaza Lobby Level. These kits contain resources such as noise-reducing headphones, weighted lap pads, and handheld sensory items.

Kauffman Center Legacy Society Legacy Society members have made planned gifts to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, helping the organization plan for the future.
Barbara and Doug Cusick became Kauffman Center supporters long before ground was broken for the building. “We were inspired by the many ways the Kauffman family has shown its support for Kansas City,” said Doug, “and we wanted to do what we could for the new performing arts venue.” Barbara and Doug opened their home and their unique collection of antique automatic musical instruments for fundraising events. capital gift, purchased a seat plaque in
honor of his mother and contributed to the Jane Chu Arts Endowment. Now Doug and Barbara have looked ahead by making the Kauffman Center the future recipient of a life insurance policy their family no longer needs. “It’s as easy as changing the beneficiary’s name on a whole life insurance policy,” Doug explained. “We see this as a legacy from our entire family, that makes the performing arts and a vibrant downtown available to our kids, grandkids and beyond.”
