ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE Dear Friends of KCRep, Welcome to John Proctor Is the Villain. The title alone is a provocation. For generations, John Proctor has been taught as one of the great tragic heroes of the American theatre. Kimberly Belflower’s remarkable play asks us to look again — not only at Proctor, but at the stories we inherit, the men we are taught to admire, and the voices those stories have pushed to the margins. Set in a high school classroom studying Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, this funny, moving, and fiercely contemporary play asks uncomfortable questions: Who gets to be complicated? Who gets forgiven? Who gets believed? And how often have we mistaken power, charisma, or suffering for heroism? I’m especially happy to welcome Laura Alcalá Baker back to KCRep. Laura last directed this spring’s hit family comedy, One of the Good Ones, and I loved the warmth, humor, and deep humanity she brought to that production. I’m thrilled to have her back leading this extraordinary company. What excites me most about this play are the young women at its center. They refuse to accept the story as it has been handed to them. They argue with it. They dismantle it. And, in doing so, they begin to understand the power of naming their own experience. We urgently need those voices. At a moment when young women are still so often doubted, spoken over, legislated for, and told to accommodate the comfort of others, this play insists that we listen. I hope KCRep can always be a place where no story is above questioning, where the canon can be challenged, and where a new generation has the freedom to say: “Maybe we have been telling this story wrong.” Thank you for being here.

This collaborative initiative includes four arts organizations: the Great Plains Theatre Commons (GPTC), Tofte Lake Center, Tulsa Artists Fellowship, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep). Each organization hosts a weeklong residency for a selected Native playwright and their work over the course of a year. Each residency takes place in a different region of the country, offering a unique focus and environment to support the development of the playwright’s work.

Missouri Repertory Theatre (MRT) was founded in 1964 by Dr. Patricia A. McIlrath, who is among a select few pioneers of the regional theater movement who believed that theater could change the world and could change our town. Kansas City’s citizens continue to benefit from Dr. Mac’s passionate commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, education, and community transformation. Under her direction, KC’s theatre fans enjoyed many memorable shows, including an unforgettable 1983 production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Dr. Mac’s vision for providing professional experience to early career artists continues today through our partnership with UMKC. Following Dr. Mac’s retirement in 1985,

George Keathley was appointed as Artistic Director. During his tenure, and through his partnership with Executive Director James D. Costin, MRT was established as the pinnacle of artistic achievement for local theatre artists, creating a legacy of excellence through work in the civic community and with legendary MRT productions such as Dracula and Richard III. In 2000, Peter Altman joined MRT as Artistic Director for a seven-year tenure. His vision included laying the groundwork to promote the city more aggressively as a center for nationally recognized theatre artists, and he spearheaded changing the theatre’s name to Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2006 to help achieve this goal. He also helped create KCRep’s second permanent performance venue, Copaken Stage, in Kansas City’s downtown Power & Light District. Eric Rosen was hired as Producing Artistic Director in 2007. During his tenure, he was 2026/27 SEASON
instrumental in cultivating a national reputation and brand for KCRep and the city as a destination for reimagined classics such as Into the Woods and Evita, and critically acclaimed new works, including Clay, Venice, and Between the Lines. In 2013, KCRep returned to the co-CEO structure when Rosen was partnered with Executive Director Angela Lee Gieras. Together, they led the company through a successful campaign for, and renovation of Spencer Theatre, crafted a five-year, $5 million campaign that increased investment in audiences, new works, and education, and rebranded the organization. In 2019, director, producer, and educator Stuart Carden joined KCRep as its fifth Artistic Director. Deeply committed to centering KCRep in this region, Stuart believes the arts play a crucial role in strengthening communities. With an eye towards creating transformative theater experiences for all, 816.235.2700
Stuart brought KCRep productions to the grounds of the World War I Museum and Memorial, the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, and Roanoke Park. Further expanding our reach, in 2022 Stuart launched KCRep for All, our expansive community tour that takes KCRep to community centers, libraries, and other public spaces all over the region. He strives to provide greater access to our art form and to reflect the passions, curiosities, and stories of the diverse communities that make KC such a vibrant city. In 2024, Angela Gieras departed KCRep after 12 years, and in 2025, Jeremy Dewey joined KCRep as Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management, operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

LEADERSHIP STUART CARDEN • Artistic Director Stuart Carden is the Artistic Director of Kansas City Repertory Theatre, where, alongside Executive Director Jeremy Dewey and KCRep’s leadership team, he is leading the organization into a new chapter of artistic innovation, community engagement, and institutional growth. Now in his seventh season at KCRep, he has expanded the theatre’s civic impact through signature initiatives including KCRep for All, a free community tour across the Kansas City metro, and American Crossroads, a program dedicated to
stories reflecting the region’s complexity and vitality. His leadership is grounded in the belief that theatre is a cultural and civic commons — creating transformative experiences for all. Prior to KCRep, Stuart held leadership positions at City Theatre Company and Writers Theatre in Chicago. As a director, his work has been seen at leading theatres nationwide, including The Old Globe, Goodman Theatre, Writers Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, People’s Light, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and New Victory Theater. His productions are known for
muscular storytelling, inventive staging, and emotional depth. At KCRep, his directing credits include Come From Away, The Wizard of Oz, Once, Little Shop of Horrors, Peter Pan and Wendy, The Old Man and The Old Moon, and Mary’s Wedding, which was performed on the lawn of the WWI Museum, as well as the music and storytelling festival, Ghost Light. Stuart champions ambitious, artist-driven work grounded in community, which Come From Away exemplifies. He will also direct The Play that Goes Wrong in the Spring of 2027. Most importantly, Stuart is director and dad to 14-year-old twins, Dashiell and Griffin.
JEREMY DEWEY • Executive Director Jeremy Dewey (He/Him) is honored to serve as KCRep’s Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees business strategy, revenue generation, finance and administration to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives. Prior to joining KCRep in 2025, Dewey was Chief of Staff at the renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), where he guided senior executives in the implementation of BAM’s strategic five-year institutional vision of impact, growth, and sustainability, including capital 816.235.2700

AMARI LEWIS Interview by JANA LILES Director of Marketing & Communications
From Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz to Chrystal in Little Shop of Horrors and Squeak in The Color Purple, Amari Lewis has brought tremendous talent to the KCRep stage. Now, she takes on a very different role as Nell in John Proctor is the Villain, a striking story about friendship, power, and finding your own voice. We caught up with Amari to talk about her KCRep journey, stepping into Nell’s world, and what she hopes audiences will discover along the way.
Q: You’ve played three very different characters at KCRep. What has each of those women taught you as an actor, and how do you see those experiences shaping the way you’re approaching Nell in John Proctor is the Villain?
A: As an actor at KCRep, I’ve learned that I work best through the lens of discovery. I approach this work through the wondrous eyes of Dorothy, the grit of Chrystal, and the passionate expression of Squeak. I see these experiences grounding me in creating Nell. Those women have taught me the courage of fully being myself in the work room in order to fully be able to understand and help bring them to life and each time I’m so honored to tell their stories.
Q: Nell is part of a group of high
school girls who are wrestling with some pretty big questions about power, relationships, and what they’ve been taught to believe. What draws you to her? Is there something about Nell that you immediately connected with?
A: What draws me to Nell is how much I can relate to her. Her newness to her school and being the only black kid in school reminds me of when I was one of the only black girls in theatre spaces growing up. She also reminds me of the core values that were instilled in me as a child by my own parents. When I see an injustice, I absolutely have to say something. I have to be a friend to the friendless because nobody deserves to be alone.

Q: When you’re handed a new
role, where do you begin? What’s your process for getting inside a character and figuring out who they are?
A: I absolutely put my nose
into the script and use all the context possible to put an entire person together. Then, when I’m on stage, I’m in the story experiencing everything around me for the first time. Then, when we bow at the end of the show it’s almost as if the character resets and will be birthed again when the curtain rises the following day.
Q: One of the things that makes John Proctor
is the Villain so interesting is the way the girls’ perspectives begin to shift as they learn more about the stories they’ve been told. Without giving anything away, what do you hope audiences, especially young people, will recognize in Nell’s journey?
A: I hope they recognize that
it’s okay to stand tall in your own values while also still figuring yourself out (because we all are). If you know something is wrong, don’t be afraid to call it out and set a boundary. Even if it means you’re the only one standing up at all. I think it’s better to be true to yourself and what you truly believe in than to follow behind someone else just to fit in and be “accepted”.

MARIO RAYMOND (Lighting Design) (He/Him) Mario Raymond is a freelance lighting designer for theatre and corporate events based in Kansas City. Originally from Louisiana, he has lived in Kansas City since 2017. He currently serves as a lecturer at Wichita State University. He holds an MFA from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and a BFA from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 2022, Becca McCracken hired her to work as a casting associate at Court Theatre. Together, they’ve also cast projects at The Lyric Opera, The Repertory of St. Louis, film, and commercial jobs. Celeste is also extremely grateful for every teaching opportunity she’s had with the University of Chicago, The Theatre School at DePaul University, Northwestern University, Columbia College, Actor’s Training Center, Harper High School, Green Shirt Studio, and more. BECCA McCRACKEN, CSA (Chicago Casting Director) Becca McCracken is an award-winning casting director with more than 20 years of experience casting theatre, film, television, and commercial projects nationwide. She serves as Director of Casting & Artist Cultivation for the Tony Award-winning Court Theatre in Chicago, where she has cast more than 30 productions and is thrilled to have her debut with Come From Away at KC Rep! A member of the Casting Society’s Board of Directors, McCracken is a dedicated advocate for artists and the casting profession. She is a two-time Artios Award winner for her casting of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. An accomplished educator and speaker, she has taught and guest lectured at leading universities and training programs throughout the Midwest. How is the magic of theatre conjured up? A long discussion — but it means that the elements of the art form — the script, actors, lights, sounds, costumes, scenery and props, projections, music and more all come together in a beautiful blend that expresses an exceptional story. But it isn’t really artistic sorcery until the audience arrives and that connection can ignite the theatre with the true magic of the experience. The most special moments of that unique enchantment took place in our 2025/26 Student Matinee Series — morning performances that deeply impacted over 8,400 young people, from third grade through university. Close to 50% of the field trip patrons benefited from our STARS ticket fund. The theatres almost literally rocked during enthusiastic curtain calls as each production reached into the parts of life that most affect individuals and offered up the story — in a way that only theatre can do —to our brightest and most expressive audiences, and it was truly magic.

Our Summer Theatre Camps welcomed young people from all over the city to explore acting and improvisation techniques, storytelling, movement, mask-making, and so much more. The middle schoolers used The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz and Wicked in their exploration process, and the high schoolers examined The Crucible in conversation with John Proctor Is the Villain. The Teaching Artists were remarkable, and the campers met them with top-notch openness and energy to fuel the magic of the artistic summer styling going on at KCRep. The true magic of theatre takes root in young people. We never know when a song, a character, a sentence or a scene will inspire a young heart and mind to understand themselves and the world in a new way. We are here for it. Always.
