With its soulful score, striking stagecraft, and powerful storytelling, Hadestown creates a world that feels both timeless and startlingly relevant.

When I first experienced this Tony Award-winning musical, I was struck by how original it felt – and by how much heart lives beneath its grit and beauty. Yes, it is a story of love and sacrifice, but it is also a story about resilience, trust, and the courage it takes to keep choosing hope, especially when the road ahead is uncertain. That is part of what makes live theatre so powerful. At Starlight, we believe shared experiences can do more than entertain us. They can move us, challenge us, connect us, and remind us that we are not walking through this world alone. Hadestown does all of that, and it does it with music that stays with you long after the final curtain.

Since 2006, Starlight has proudly awarded Vincent Legacy Scholarships to middle school students throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Established with a generous contribution from longtime Starlight supporters Greg and Rebecca Reid, the scholarships provide BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth with funds to pursue professional training and experience the life-expanding possibilities of the performing arts.

NAMISA MDLALOSE BIZANA (Persephone) is an award-winning actor from South Africa. Namisa graduated from UCT with a degree in theater-making. ANAÏS MITCHELL (Music, Lyrics & Book) is a Tony and Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter whose recordings include the original studio album of Hadestown (2010), Young Man in America (2012), Bonny Light Horseman (2019, as Bonny Light Horseman) and Anaïs Mitchell (2022). She was named to the TIME100 list of the Most Influential People in the World in 2020 and her first book Working on a Song: The Lyrics of Hadestown was published by Plume/Penguin the same year. TODD SICKAFOOSE (Arrangements & Orchestrations) is a Tony and Grammy award-winning composer, producer, arranger, orchestrator, bandleader and double bassist. He produced, coarranged and performed on the original Hadestown album, co-produced both Hadestown cast recordings and produced and arranged Anaïs Mitchell’s album Young Man in America . Since 2004, Sickafoose has performed internationally with Ani DiFranco. Writing for his band Tiny Resistors, he recently created Bear Proof, a chamber jazz hybrid commissioned by the Doris Duke Foundation.

ARMAN WALI MOHAMMAD (Music Director) is a music director, pianist and arranger who is involved in a diverse collection of music making

WHO’S WHO IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY

A guide to the characters that inspired Hadestown.

ORPHEUS —Son of the muse of epic poetry, engaged to marry Eurydice. With his golden voice and lyre, Orpheus charmed all living things, even rocks and stones.

EURYDICE —A dryad, or tree nymph, engaged to marry Orpheus. On the day of their wedding, she was bitten by a poisonous snake, died, and descended to the Underworld.

HADES —God of the dead, ruler of the Underworld, sometimes called “the Wealthy One.” He fell in love with, abducted, and married Persephone. Her mother, goddess of the harvest, refused to bless the earth while Persephone was below.

PERSEPHONE —Goddess of the seasons, flowers, fruit, and grain. By arrangement, she spent half the year with Hades in the Underworld, causing fall and winter above. The other half she returned to her mother, bringing spring and summer with her.

HERMES —Fleet-footed guide, messenger of the gods, and conductor of souls to the Underworld. In some tellings, it was Hermes who taught Orpheus to play the lyre.

FATES —Three goddesses who together determined the destinies of mortals, measuring their lifespans and apportioning their suffering.

CHORUS —In ancient Greek theater, the Chorus sang, spoke, and danced in unison. Often representing the voice of the citizens, the Chorus commented on the actions of characters and served as an emotional conduit for the audience.

ACCESSIBILITY

Parking

Accessible parking is available in the Yellow, Red, and Orange Lots located east and southeast of the theatre. Guests displaying state-issued disabled license plates or placards will be directed to the accessible parking area as space allows.

Mobile Assistance Shuttles

Complimentary curb-to-curb shuttle service is provided to guests with mobility challenges. Starlight operates multi-passenger shuttles that have designated stops in Yellow, Red, Orange and Purple parking lots. Shuttles provide needed transport to and from Gate 8.

Wheelchair Assistance

Starlight personnel are available to provide wheelchair assistance to a seat location prior to the show and back to the gate’s drop off point after the show. Please contact a member of our Guest Assist staff if you need assistance.

Restrooms

There are wheelchair-accessible restrooms throughout the venue. A companion restroom as well as universal changing tables are located in the northeast restrooms closest to Gate 6.

Assistive Listening Services

Assistive listening devices are free at every performance. To obtain a device, visit the South Guest Information Kiosk located across from Ovation. Sunday night Broadway performances are interpreted for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons.

To use your personal device, connect to the Listen Everywhere app with headset or earbuds and connect to the Starlight Listen Everywhere Wi-Fi.

Sight-Impaired Services

Audio Description (AD) is provided by the Audio-Reader Network during the Saturday night Broadway performances. Guests may obtain an audiodescription device at the Audio-Reader Network table behind Terrace 2.

Sensory Kits

In partnership with Variety KC, Starlight offers sensory kits for guests in need of noise-canceling headsets, weighted blankets, and fidget toys. Sensory kits may be checked out a Guest Information Kiosk.

Weather Policy

All Starlight events are held rain or shine, with the exception of severe/ dangerous weather. Updates are posted on kcstarlight.com/alerts and in the KC Starlight app.

Security Screening Policy

To ensure the safety of all guests, Starlight reserves the right to inspect persons, parcels or clothing capable of concealing or carrying prohibited items into the venue in situations where health, safety or well-being may be compromised. All guests are subject to an inspection of bags and parcels, including pat-downs and use of magnetic wands.

Photography

Use of professional photography equipment or recording devices (video, audio, or other medium) is prohibited to use during a performance without prior written consent. By attending a Starlight performance, guests give their consent to be photographed or recorded by talent, venue, or their contractors.

Smoking Areas

Smoking is prohibited in all areas of the venue except the North Lawn and east of the Encore Deck. This policy applies to cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipes and any other smoking device. Marijuana and all cannabis products are prohibited.
