ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE From the beginning, I have thought about this production not only as a performance, but as an opportunity to practice community. Theatre is one of the few places where hundreds of strangers still gather in the same room, breathe the same air, listen to the same story, and experience something together. For a few hours, we become a temporary community — artists and audiences meeting one another in real time.

Dear Friends of KCRep, Twenty-five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the images of destruction remain fixed in our collective memory. But alongside that devastation, another story was unfolding — one of extraordinary generosity, courage, humor, and human connection. When the United States closed its airspace, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. In an instant, the population nearly doubled. The people of Gander and the surrounding communities opened their schools, churches, kitchens, closets, and homes to thousands of strangers. They offered food, clothing, shelter, medicine, and care. Again and again, they simply asked: “What do you need, and how can we help?”

Our production invites you into a shared space inspired by an airport hangar — a place of arrival and departure, waiting, and uncertainty. The actors, musicians, and audience occupy that world together. The band is woven into the life of the room, and the storytelling asks us to use our collective imagination to transform a handful of chairs, a piece of music, or a simple gesture into an airplane, a bus, a bar, or an entire town. At the heart of this story are ordinary people doing extraordinary things — not because they believe themselves to be heroes, but because someone standing in front of them needs help.

Come From Away tells that remarkable story. But it is not really a play about a place in the past. It is a play about the choices we make when the world suddenly changes around us. Do we retreat into fear and protect only what is ours? Or do we move toward one another, trusting that our shared humanity is stronger than the forces that divide us?

KCRep is also proud to be part of the Four Directions Native Playwright Residency Program. This collaborative initiative includes four arts organizations: the Great Plains Theatre Commons (GPTC), Tofte Lake Center, Tulsa Artists Fellowship, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep). Each organization hosts a weeklong residency for a selected Native playwright and their work over the course of a year. Each residency takes place in a different region of the country, offering a unique focus and environment to support the development of the playwright’s work.

Missouri Repertory Theatre (MRT) was founded in 1964 by Dr. Patricia A. McIlrath, who is among a select few pioneers of the regional theater movement who believed that theater could change the world and could change our town. Kansas City’s citizens continue to benefit from Dr. Mac’s passionate commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, education, and community transformation. Under her direction, KC’s theatre fans enjoyed many memorable shows, including an unforgettable 1983 production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Dr. Mac’s vision for providing professional experience to early career artists continues today through our partnership with UMKC. Following Dr. Mac’s retirement in 1985,

George Keathley was appointed as Artistic Director. During his tenure, and through his partnership with Executive Director James D. Costin, MRT was established as the pinnacle of artistic achievement for local theatre artists, creating a legacy of excellence through work in the civic community and with legendary MRT productions such as Dracula and Richard III. In 2000, Peter Altman joined MRT as Artistic Director for a seven-year tenure. His vision included laying the groundwork to promote the city more aggressively as a center for nationally recognized theatre artists, and he spearheaded changing the theatre’s name to Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2006 to help achieve this goal. He also helped create KCRep’s second permanent performance venue, Copaken Stage, in Kansas City’s downtown Power & Light District. Eric Rosen was hired as Producing Artistic Director in 2007. During his tenure, he was 2026/27 SEASON

instrumental in cultivating a national reputation and brand for KCRep and the city as a destination for reimagined classics such as Into the Woods and Evita, and critically acclaimed new works, including Clay, Venice, and Between the Lines. In 2013, KCRep returned to the co-CEO structure when Rosen was partnered with Executive Director Angela Lee Gieras. Together, they led the company through a successful campaign for, and renovation of Spencer Theatre, crafted a five-year, $5 million campaign that increased investment in audiences, new works, and education, and rebranded the organization. In 2019, director, producer, and educator Stuart Carden joined KCRep as its fifth Artistic Director. Deeply committed to centering KCRep in this region, Stuart believes the arts play a crucial role in strengthening communities. With an eye towards creating transformative theater experiences for all, 816.235.2700

Stuart brought KCRep productions to the grounds of the World War I Museum and Memorial, the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, and Roanoke Park. Further expanding our reach, in 2022 Stuart launched KCRep for All, our expansive community tour that takes KCRep to community centers, libraries, and other public spaces all over the region. He strives to provide greater access to our art form and to reflect the passions, curiosities, and stories of the diverse communities that make KC such a vibrant city. In 2024, Angela Gieras departed KCRep after 12 years, and in 2025, Jeremy Dewey joined KCRep as Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management, operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

LEADERSHIP STUART CARDEN • Artistic Director Stuart Carden is the Artistic Director of Kansas City Repertory Theatre, where, alongside Executive Director Jeremy Dewey and KCRep’s leadership team, he is leading the organization into a new chapter of artistic innovation, community engagement, and institutional growth. Now in his seventh season at KCRep, he has expanded the theatre’s civic impact through signature initiatives including KCRep for All, a free community tour across the Kansas City metro, and American Crossroads, a program dedicated to

stories reflecting the region’s complexity and vitality. His leadership is grounded in the belief that theatre is a cultural and civic commons — creating transformative experiences for all. Prior to KCRep, Stuart held leadership positions at City Theatre Company and Writers Theatre in Chicago. As a director, his work has been seen at leading theatres nationwide, including The Old Globe, Goodman Theatre, Writers Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, People’s Light, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and New Victory Theater. His productions are known for

muscular storytelling, inventive staging, and emotional depth. At KCRep, his directing credits include The Wizard of Oz, Once, Little Shop of Horrors, Peter Pan and Wendy, The Old Man and The Old Moon, and Mary’s Wedding, which was performed on the lawn of the WWI Museum, as well as the music and storytelling festival, Ghost Light. Stuart champions ambitious, artistdriven work grounded in community, which Come From Away exemplifies. He will also direct The Play that Goes Wrong in the Spring of 2027. Most importantly, Stuart is director and dad to 14-year-old twins, Dashiell and Griffin.

JEREMY DEWEY • Executive Director Jeremy Dewey (He/Him) is honored to serve as KCRep’s Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees business strategy, revenue generation, finance and administration to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives. Prior to joining KCRep in 2025, Dewey was Chief of Staff at the renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), where he guided senior executives in the implementation of BAM’s strategic five-year institutional vision of impact, growth, and sustainability, including capital

projects. He is also Founder and and operational management. Q & A with

JENNY GREEN Interview by JANA LILES Director of Marketing & Communications

Q: How do you approach designing costumes for a production? Where do you start? What is your process? A: For me, the process starts with reading the script and seeing if any themes stand out. I’m also looking at time period, number of characters, and timeline of the show. I’ll then look for some inspiration in art and photos to take to the first meeting with the director to see what their vision looks like and we see how we

would like to move forward. For Come From Away, I spent quite a bit of time looking up the real people in photos and videos so I could get a sense of how they are portrayed in the characters on stage. This show has no stops, and the flow of storytelling is a constant transition from character to character. With this in mind, I then spent time and thinking through how I can support the storytelling in a clear, but simplified, way.

Q: Costume design touches nearly every department. How closely did you collaborate with the director, scenic designer, lighting designer, and actors throughout the process?

A: I was in several meetings with the entire Design Team and Director. We all wanted to make sure the show could flow easily through the transitions. The Scenic Designer helped with making sure we had places built into the set to stash costumes and props. She also designed pass-throughs on the walls so there can be seamless hand-offs to the crew backstage. The Lighting Designer guided my color choices

for costumes by providing the vision for the color and temperature of the stage. The Sound Designer and I talked through logistics of mic placement because hats, wigs, and anything going over an actor’s head can all affect the placement. As casting comes in, I touch base with the actors about measurements and asking them questions that can help me figure out the best fit and comfort for their clothing.

Q: This musical is

based on real people and true events. How do you balance historical authenticity with the practical needs of live theater?

A: I grew up in a very small

town here in Missouri and the familiarity and warmth the citizens of Gander and surrounding areas showed the visitors is something I could really connect with from my own upbringing.

I could see the folks in my head and looked at what clothing we could provide for easy on and off that represent the many characters, while still being true and authentic to the setting of the show. We spent time distressing clothing to look lived in and real, not fresh off the store rack. For the simplicity needed for changes, I focused on hats, vests, and jackets; things that go on easily, but are in the style and feel of a small town.

Q: This is an ensembledriven show. How do costumes help support that sense of shared storytelling rather than drawing attention to individual pieces?

A: For me, it’s about simplicity and trust. You trust your actors to fill in the gaps with their work, and you trust your audience to use their willing suspension of disbelief that even a simple jacket change can tell which character is now in the scene. Q: In addition

of Costumes and the Designer can be a real help to my process. I usually start out with my bigger ideas and “dreams”. Then I take into consideration our staffing, schedule with other shows, budget, and what resources I know that we have in stock or in Kansas City. From there, I can pare things down to what is the most feasible as well as practical in the storytelling while keeping the overall vision of the show.

Q: Audiences

often remember the performances more than the costumes — and that’s usually a sign the costumes are doing their job. What do you hope audiences feel, even if they don’t consciously notice the costume design?

He has performed onboard Holland America Line, at the Unicorn Theatre, Spinning Tree Theatre, musical directed with The Black Repertory Theater of Kansas City, recently earning his first producer’s credit at Quality Hill Playhouse. Julian also holds a residency at the 1909 Club with Soul Fundamentals, performing every second and fourth Thursday with his band, EleFunk. Beyond the stage, he spent 12 years teaching Elementary Music and serves on the board for Music Across Borders. He is grateful to remain a pivotal part of the scene.

COME FROM AWAY BRUCE GRAYBILL (Mandolin/Octave Mandolin/Acoustic Guitars) KCRep: debut. Born in England and raised in America, award winning multi- instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter Bruce Graybill got his start in professional music in 1975 as lead Guitarist for The Ebony Blue Show Band. In 1982 he was introduced to Mandolin and Winfield, later marrying into the family that introduced him to both. Awards include two first place, two third place, and nine top five placements in Mandolin at the National Flat-pick Championships (Winfield), in addition to six Kansas State Champion titles in Mandolin, and Flatpick Guitar. Bruce is an endorsing artist for Montana Lutherie and is a former President of The Classical Mandolin Society of America. Bruce performs solo, with Hot Strings, and Cordas Eclética in the Kansas City area, and conducts workshops as a nationally recognized clinician. Ben Tervort is a musician and recording/mixing engineer currently based in Kansas City that can be heard in a wide variety of musical situations. With an emphasis on improvised music, he has performed as a bassist all around the midwest. Having performed with jazz artists such as Adam Larson, Matt Otto, and Eddie Moore, as well as national touring acts like the Four Freshman, Ben is in high demand for his musical taste, consistency, and desire to always bring a fresh perspective to any performance. In addition to Jazz, he has an extensive background performing classically, attended the Eastern Music Festival as a student, and has performed with large ensembles at both the University of Kansas and University of Missouri Kansas City. Ben also loves performing original works and songs inspired by multiple genres, and regularly performs with the groups Barnaby Bright and Joel vs Joel.

KATE MYRE (Dialect Coach) KCRep: debut. Kate Myre is a professor at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University and works internationally as a voice-over artist and dialect coach. She has worked extensively with Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning playwright and director Brian Yorkey, dialect and text coaching many theater productions as well as the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, Echoes, and The Outer Banks. In Oslo, Norway, she worked with the acclaimed production of The Hamlet Complex at the Oslo Royal Opera House, directed by Alan Lucien Øyen. CHRISTINE SINGLETON (Dramaturg) KCRep: debut. Christine L. Singleton is a collage of every Black woman she has ever come into beloved contact with. She is a long-forgotten myth. A paradox of personhood. A rumor. She is a whisper seen on the lips of gossiping aunties. Christine is a writer who wants to learn everything she can about her craft. This is Christine’s debut show with KCRep and she is very excited. Previously Christine was the Dramaturg/Associate Director for Shades of Theatre’s production of A Raisin in the Sun. As Dramaturg, it is Christine’s role to advocate for the playwright’s vision. She assists the cast, crew, and audience in deepening their connection to the material. Christine is a graduate student in the English Department at the University of Kansas. She holds a B.A. in English from Virginia Commonwealth University. COME FROM AWAY HOLLYANNA PARKER (Assistant Stage Manager) (She/Her) Hollyanna received her bachelor’s degree in Theatre Performance from The University of Kansas. This is her debut as an Assistant Stage Manager with KCRep. Previously, she has worked in New York City as a stage manager in theatre, such as Chesapeake Chicks at Theatre for the New City, Powerline Road with Theatre Now New York, Uzume as well as The Weak and The Strong at LaMama Theatre, A Winter’s Tale and Two Noble Kinsmen with The Drilling Company, Women’s Project Theatre’s 2022 Gala at the Edison Ballroom, IES Lumen Awards at Pier 60, and many more. As a production assistant, she worked with the New Dramatist’s Luncheon, the International Emmy’s, the CFDA Fashion Awards, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the Off-Broadway Alliance Gala. In 2021, she worked with Swiftest for the reopening of Broadway productions such as Phantom of the Opera, Waitress, To Kill a Mockingbird, and with 101 Productions for For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf and Plaza Suite. She has also worked as a house manager for National Asian American Theatre Company.

How is the magic of theatre conjured up? A long discussion — but it means that the elements of the art form — the script, actors, lights, sounds, costumes, scenery and props, projections, music and more all come together in a beautiful blend that expresses an exceptional story. But it isn’t really artistic sorcery until the audience arrives and that connection can ignite the theatre with the true magic of the experience. The most special moments of that unique enchantment took place in our 2025/26 Student Matinee Series — morning performances that deeply impacted over 8,400 young people, from third grade through university. Close to 50% of the field trip patrons benefited from our STARS ticket fund. The theatres almost literally rocked during enthusiastic curtain calls as each production reached into the parts of life that most affect individuals and offered up the story — in a way that only theatre can do —to our brightest and most expressive audiences, and it was truly magic.

Our Summer Theatre Camps welcomed young people from all over the city to explore acting and improvisation techniques, storytelling, movement, mask-making, and so much more. The middle schoolers used The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz and Wicked in their exploration process, and the high schoolers examined The Crucible in conversation with John Proctor Is the Villain. The Teaching Artists were remarkable, and the campers met them with top-notch openness and energy to fuel the magic of the artistic summer styling going on at KCRep. The true magic of theatre takes root in young people. We never know when a song, a character, a sentence or a scene will inspire a young heart and mind to understand themselves and the world in a new way. We are here for it. Always.
