ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE Dear Friends, Each year, as the first snow flurries brush the skyline and the Plaza lights begin to glow, Kansas City knows that A Christmas Carol is near—and for twenty-five years, that has meant one thing: Gary Neal Johnson donning his cape and top hat to become our beloved Ebenezer Scrooge. This season marks a profoundly meaningful moment in KCRep’s history as we celebrate Gary’s extraordinary tenure and bid him a fond farewell from the role. Gary hasn’t simply played a curmudgeon transformed; he has lived Dickens’ message of redemption, generosity, and joy. His Scrooge was never just a character — he was our Scrooge: fierce, funny, flawed, and gloriously reborn each year. Generations of Kansas Citians have grown up with Gary. Children who once gasped at his “Bah! Humbug!” now return with kids of their own, eager to share the magic. Families have marked the passing years not only by the holidays, but by the familiar sight of Gary’s radiant grin in the story’s final moments — or by his gleeful “whoop,” hop, and little jig as he greets Christmas morning and blesses the “Turkey Boy.” Beyond the stage, Gary has been a mentor to countless young artists, a generous collaborator, and a cornerstone of the KCRep family. In an art form built on ephemera, he has left something enduring: a legacy of joy, tradition, and community. Though it is bittersweet to imagine our stage without him in that iconic cape and hat, his spirit will forever echo through every “God bless us, every one!” spoken here. On behalf of Kansas City Repertory Theatre and the thousands of lives he’s touched: thank you, Gary — for your artistry, your humor, and your immense heart. Each organization hosts a weeklong residency for a selected Native playwright and their work over the course of a year. Each residency takes place in a different region of the country, offering a unique focus and environment to support the development of the playwright’s work.

appointed as Artistic Director. During his tenure, and through his partnership with Executive Director James D. Costin, MRT was established as the pinnacle of artistic achievement for local theatre artists, creating a legacy of excellence through work in the civic community and with legendary MRT productions such as Dracula and Richard III.

Missouri Repertory Theatre was founded in 1964 by Dr. Patricia A. McIlrath, who is among a select few pioneers of the regional theater movement who believed that theater could change the world and could change our town. Kansas City’s citizens continue to benefit from Dr. Mac’s passionate commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, education, and community transformation. Under her direction, KC’s theatre fans enjoyed many memorable shows, including an unforgettable 1983 production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Dr. Mac’s vision for providing professional experience to early career artists continues today through our partnership with UMKC.

In 2000, Peter Altman joined MRT as Artistic Director for a sevenyear tenure. His vision included laying the groundwork to promote the city more aggressively as a center for nationally recognized theatre artists, and he spearheaded changing the theatre’s name to Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2006 to help achieve this goal. He also helped create KCRep’s second permanent performance venue, Copaken Stage, in Kansas City’s downtown Power & Light District. Eric Rosen was hired as Producing Artistic Director in 2007. for all, Stuart brought KCRep productions to the grounds of the World War I Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and Roanoke Park. Further expanding our reach, in 2022 Stuart launched KCRep for All, our expansive community tour that takes KCRep to community centers, libraries, and other public spaces all over the region. He strives to provide greater access to our art form and to reflect the passions, curiosities, and stories of the diverse communities that make KC such a vibrant city.

cultivating a national reputation and brand for KCRep and the city as a destination for reimagined classics such as Into the Woods and Evita, and critically acclaimed new works, including Clay, Venice, and Between the Lines. In 2013, KCRep returned to the co-CEO structure when Rosen was partnered with Executive Director Angela Lee Gieras. Together, they led the company through a successful campaign for, and renovation of Spencer Theatre, crafted a five-year, $5 million campaign that increased investment in audiences, new works, and education, and rebranded the organization.

In 2024, Angela Gieras departed KCRep after 12 years, and in 2025, Jeremy Dewey joined KCRep as Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management, operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

In 2019, director, producer, and educator Stuart Carden joined KCRep as its fifth Artistic Director. Deeply committed to centering KCRep in this region, Stuart believes the arts play a crucial role in strengthening communities. CHARLES DICKENS (Author/ Feb 7, 1812 - Jun 9, 1870) Charles Dickens was born in Portsea, England, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. His father was a clerk in the Naval Pay Office, and in 1824, he was arrested for debt. While his family was imprisoned in Marshalsea Prison in London, Dickens, then only twelve, was forced to work at Warren’s Blacking Factory. After his father was released from prison, Dickens attended a day school in London. In 1827, he was taken from school and worked in a law office and later as a freelance reporter at Doctors’ Commons court. In 1833 he began writing sketches of London life under the pseudonym Boz, which appeared in newspapers and magazines and were published in the collection Sketches by Boz in 1836. That year, Dickens also married Catherine Hogarth, met his close friend and biographer, John Forster, became the editor of Bentley’s Miscellany, and began publishing The Pickwick Papers in monthly installments. Over the next six years, Dickens published four novels in serial form including Oliver Twist (18371839) and Nicholas Nickleby (18381839). In 1842, he went on a lecture tour of the United States and Canada, where he urged the abolition of slavery and international copyright. When he returned to England, he published American Notes (1842), a critical account of his experiences there, and the novel, 816.235.2700

Martin Chuzzlewit (1843-1844), part of which was set in America. He also wrote A Christmas Carol (1844), the first of his popular Christmas books, which include The Chimes (1844), and The Cricket on the Hearth (1845). After returning from a tour of Italy, Switzerland, and France with his family, Dickens established an amateur theatre company. He also founded and edited two periodicals, Household Words (1850 to 1859) and All the Year Round, which ran from 1859 until his death. In 1853, Dickens gave the first of many public readings from his work. During this period, he wrote his most successful novels, Dombey and Son (1846-1848), David Copperfield (1849-1850), Bleak House (1852-1853), Hard Times (1854), Little Dorrit (18551857), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Great Expectations (1860-1861), and Our Mutual Friend (1864-1865). After several tours of the British Isles and America to give public readings, Dickens suffered a mild stroke. He died in London on June 9, 1870, leaving his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished.

LYNN A. KING (Assistant Director) (She/Her) Lynn King is a Kansas City, Kansas native and has been performing for Kansas City audiences for over 30 years. She received her MFA in Acting/Directing from the University of Missouri, Kansas City and has regional and national credits in theatre, commercials, and film. Lynn was last seen in the production of ‘NIGHT MOTHER as Thelma, and directed August Wilson’s FENCES both for KC Melting Pot Theatre (KCMPT). Lynn spends most of her time onstage but her directing credits include IS GOD IS, FAIRVIEW, BARBECUE, and FOR COLORED GIRLS…(KCMPT). Lynn was last on the KC Rep stage in the The Miracle Worker and is delighted to be working, for the first time, as an Assistant Director. She is the Producing Artistic Director of Tradewind Arts, a boutique arts organization devoted to illuminating, motivating, and amplifying the voice of Native Hawaiian, Oceanic, and Asian American artists. Andi was a 2017-18 Charlotte Street Foundation (CSF) Studio Resident. As our world grows more complex, we want to empower young people to feel free and creative, full of confidence and spirit to express themselves and feel strong. We want them to laugh and feel joy, learn about and feel on behalf of others, and know their own value in their world as smart, curious, creative and empowered individuals. KCRep seeks to play a positive role in the life of every student we encounter in a workshop or in the theatre. The arts open up expression, fuel belonging, and make connections. The arts meet the fragile, but deep, spirit of each young person — naturally open-hearted and bright-minded. Summer Theatre Camp welcomed both middle and high schoolers for wild and wonderful opportunities to explore theatre through scene work, mask masking, movement and much more. Taught by professional actors, the joy in the room was palpable and meaningful. They hate to say goodbye! 68

7,200 students — from 3rd grade through college from all over the region — saw a show as a part of the Student Matinee Series during KCRep’s 2024/25 season. Over 40% benefitted from our STARS fund. Without exception, a morning field trip experience is rich and alive. Over 220 students from Kansas City, KS saw Nathan Louis Jackson’s beautiful play about a KCK family, Broke-ology. The connections and emotions were powerful. The laughter, sighs, tears (yes) and applause for Once, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, A Christmas Carol and Emma were overwhelming. We never know when a song, a character, a sentence or a scene will spark a young heart and mind to understand themselves better. But we are here for it. Always.
