For Kansas City Chiefs fans across the country, the moment they have been waiting for is finally here. It’s been 50 years since the Chiefs have made a Super Bowl, and many fans have high hopes for their success in Super Bowl LIV, which the Chiefs will play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. One of those dedicated fans is Hutchinson Community College Department 3 Chairperson, Cynthia Rapp. “I’ve waited a long time for this,” Rapp said. “I’ve waited 50 years to see them back in the Super Bowl.” Rapp has been a fan of the Chiefs since she was in grade school. She’s miraculously put up with all of the buffooneries that the Chiefs have gone through over the last 50 years. “I have been a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs almost as long as they’ve been the Kansas City Chiefs,” Rapp said. “I got hooked on them and followed ever since, in good times and bad times. I’m not one of those that abandons them just because they’re not
having a good year.” One of the things that is most exciting for Rapp is being able to watch the team improve throughout the years with various coaches and players. “I’ve loved watching them grow with the different coaches that come in,” Rapp said. “It’s been fun with [head coach] Andy Reid, just him being able to build something makes me excited for the future.” Looking forward to the future of the Chiefs can bring any range of emotions, but for Rapp, she is nothing but hopeful for their success. “It doesn’t matter
whether they win or lose,” Rapp said. “Although I do like it better when they win. Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose, that’s just part of the game. There’s always some disappointment that comes at a point when we don’t make it, but I think there’s going to be some more good years ahead for people that are Chiefs fans.” On the day of the Super Bowl, Rapp said that she will be watching with just her dogs, as opposed to the typical watch parties that many people attend.

With three “Chiefs Kingdom” flags, a Tyrann Mathieu jersey, and a framed Patrick Mahomes’ Madden cover photo all lining the walls, Trevor Martin’s living room wears his interests on its sleeves. A lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, Martin has been trying his best to mentally prepare himself for the upcoming Super Bowl LIV, the first Super Bowl appearance made by the Chiefs in 50 years. “It’s honestly still a dream, I don’t know what to think,” said Martin about the Chiefs making it back to the Super Bowl. Martin’s first Chiefs game was in third grade, and he explained how much that experience molded him into the superfan he is today. “I saw the Chiefs play the Bills in third grade, and it was an entirely different ex-
perience,” Martin said. “(The atmosphere) is my favorite part about going to games. Tailgating for five hours, talking to other fans, everything about it.” One of Martin’s favorite memories from a game at Arrowhead Stadium was tailgating for a playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts last season. “We had finally won a playoff game, and you could feel that energy in the crowd,” said Martin about the experience. Martin has seen a lot as a Chiefs fan. From finishing with a record of 2-14 in the 2012 season to making it to the Super Bowl, Martin’s time as a passionate fan of the Chiefs has hit deep lows and amazing highs. However, Martin

doesn’t think that this is the peak of the Chiefs’ success. “I think we’re about to be a whole new dynasty. This won’t be our only Super Bowl this decade,” said Martin with a smile. With the Super Bowl only being days away, only time will tell whether Trevor Martin is right about his prediction.

Don’t be scared of your emotions
Our view We all know of laws that are actually legit and make no sense With these in mind, Kansas might take the cake for having a law that is completely irresponsible. The law states that it is legal for sexual battery to occur between spouses. How in the world is this just now coming to our attention? In 2019, Kansas lawmakers tried to repeal the law, but it failed as it wasn’t looked at before a set deadline. This makes us think about several things, as it could have easily been repealed if someone in power would have paid attention to what was on their desk. Maybe there are some people that didn’t want to accept the fact that this current law is bad publicity. It’s definitely time for a change. Sexual violence is already common in marriages and to have this law in place puts a lot of people at risk. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey data done in 2015, only 18 percent of women experience sexual violence. But that is what’s
reported, not the true number. Unreported incidents are more common than people realize. It’s hard for men and women to come forward with this because it’s seen as embarrassing and they often receive ridicule. Not to mention it could put them in even more
danger. We need this law to be repealed. Violence can happen even with people you are close to. Be aware of the signs, help those in need, and understand that laws need to have people’s best interests in mind.

To add to the damage humans beings are doing, our bodies decided to hype things up a little bit. The Coronavirus made an outbreak in China and has spread all over the world. The death toll is currently over 100 individuals and still spreading. I’ve heard some of my classmates say that they hope they get it so they don’t end up having to take their finals. And, most recently, the death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant, and the seven other victims in the Los Angeles helicopter crash. The world is in mourning and people continue to grieve in various ways. I’m not much of a sports fan, not at all, but I do know that Bryant was a huge part of everyone’s life. And to have that big of a disaster with that many deaths, pained the entire world. I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that the universe is trying to tell us something. Favorite all time Chief: This goes way back. I’d say Bobby Bell. He was a linebacker for the Chiefs back during Super Bowl IV, I’d say one of the best linebackers to ever play the game. I’ve still got two guys, Bobby Bell and Buck Buchannan, I’ve got their football cards from 50 years ago. AFC Championship feeling: Unreal. I kept waiting for the usual disappointment, but when time ran out on the clock I turned to my son-in-law and said “Oh my god… we’re going to the Super Bowl”. Very satisfying. Super Bowl plans: I wish I could be there. I looked at a package, but for three nights in a nice hotel and a ticket to the game … $8,000. I work at HutchCC, that’s not going to happen. So I’m just going to get together with family and friends to watch the game. Super Bowl prediction: Obviously the Chiefs win. I’d put it at 35-27 Chiefs over 49ers. It’s been 50 years for the Chiefs, Andy Reid has 21 years of coaching under his belt with no trophy. Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers head coach, is young and has a lot of years left. San Francisco has had its share of trophies. The stars are aligning for the Chiefs this year. San Francisco has a good D, but they can’t match Mahomes.

Blue Dragon women’s basketball team gets point guard back

Throughout the first semester, freshman guard Tor’e Alford proved herself to be a valuable player to the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team. However, toward the end of the semester, Alford began to notice a pain in her foot. “During the Butler game, my foot was just hurting bad. It had hurt previously, but I just wanted to play that game because it was the last game before Christmas break,” Alford said. After playing through the sharp pains, Alford decided it was time to do something about her foot. “I told our trainer, and went and got an MRI. It turned out it was a stress fracture in my foot from repeated movements,” Alford said. Alford said she does not know for sure how long her foot was fractured, however, she did know her road to recovery was going to be lengthy. “All of Christmas break, I couldn’t put any weight on it, so I was on crutches and rode the scooter around,” Alford said. “I’ve never had an injury that kept me from play-
ing before, so it sucked because I didn’t really like sitting that much and not playing.” The team faced hardships without their point guard, but they strived to adjust. “(Her injury) put us in a tough position. We had to move some kids around - Abby played some point guard, and she’s played multiple positions for us,” HutchCC coach John Ontjes said. While the team put all efforts into accommodating for Alford, her absence may have been detrimental in a close game. “We faced some foul problems throughout the time when she was gone. We’ve had to play a lot of zone (defense). It cost us a win at Cowley. But, we’ve survived it, and she’s back, so hopefully we get going in the right direction,” Ontjes said. Being back is a great feeling for Alford, and the rest of the team. Especially as they have a couple difficult games coming up. “We just have to take it one game at a time, we have to beat Barton, then start working on Seward for Saturday,” Alford said. Now that Alford is basically back playing with no minute-limitations, Ontjes believes the team is set to get back on track where
they should be. “Anytime you miss 6-8 weeks with an injury, you usually never return. As long as she can take care of the basketball and run the offense like she’s done, she will be doing her job,” Ontjes said. Offensively, Alford has a knack for grasping control of any situation and setting her team up to score. “She’s got a great feel for the game. I think we flow better in transition when Tor’e has the basketball in her hands,” Ontjes said. Alford graduated high school in Derby. Ontjes said he was excited to work with a player from such a successful basketball team. “It was tremendous for our program to be able to get such talent in-state, right down the road. She had a wonderful high school career, played on a great team, that’s what we were excited about, the type of program she came from,” Ontjes said. “They were constantly winning - bringing that to our program is only helping the other kids on our team.” The Blue Dragons will face the Seward County Saints Saturday in Liberal.
Athlete of the week (Jan. 19-26) Abby Ogle, Women’s basketball
The week: Ogle continued to establish herself as one of the top players in the NJCAA Ogle with two tremendous performances in Jayhawk West action. On Jan. 22, Ogle had 17 points, five rebounds and two steals in leading the Blue Dragons to an 83-50 win against Dodge City. Then on Sunday, Ogle had 25 points on 9 of 10 shooting, to go with five steals, three assists and two rebounds in a 77-36 rout of Colby. The season: Ogle, a sophomroe and a Baldwin City native, has turned into a scoring machine, averaging 16.1 points per game. She ranks in the top 20 nationally in field-goal percentage, at 60.6%. She also shoots 41.3% from 3-point range, and averages 6.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game for the Blue Dragons.
Kibet sets Blue Dragon record By Adam Kolb Co-Sports Editor
For the second consecutive week, Hutchinson Community College sophomore Andrew Kibet set a Blue Dragon men’s track and field indoor record. Kibet, a sophomore from Kenya, broke the Blue Dragon indoor 800-meter record Friday at the Jayhawk Invitational and the University of Kansas’ Anschutz Pavilion. One week ago, Kibet broke the Blue Dragon 600-meter record at the Shocker Prelude in Wichita. Kibet has the No. 1 time in the nation of 1:52:32. Sophomore Brett Hillabrand finished second in the 1,000 meter afternoon session with a time of 2:36:22. His adjusted time of 2:34:10 makes him Hutchinson’s fifth men’s NJCAA qualifier. The Blue Dragons will next compete Saturday at the Gorilla Invitational in Pittsburg. Women’s basketball – The No. 10 ranked women’s basketball team surrendered 10 points to the Colby Trojans in the first 4 minutes, 41 seconds of Sunday’s Jayhawk West game at the Colby Community Building. Over the final 35:19, Hutchinson gave up just 26 more points to the Trojans. Hutchinson held Colby to less than 20 percent shooting and shot its second-highest percentage of the season in a 77-36 victory over the Trojans. The Blue Dragons had a 36-33 rebounding advantage despite giving up 16 offensive rebounds. Sophomore Sasha Francis had a teamhigh eight rebounds, and freshman Tor’e Alford had five assists, while Abby Ogle picked up five steals. Ogle has also been named the Jayhawk Conference women’s Division I player of the week for the second time this season. She’s averaging 16.3 points per game, which is good for second in scoring in the Jayhawk conference,

and is fourth in NJCAA in steals at 4.1 steals per game. She has scored in double figures in 12 straight games for the No. 8 Blue Dragon women. The Blue Dragons won their fifth game in a row and their 50th all-time win against Colby in 64 total games played. The Blue Dragons improve to 19-2 overall and 11-1 in the Jayhawk West, remaining one game behind Seward county for first place in the league. Men’s basketball – For the second time in the last three games, the men’s basketball team saw an opponent rally late and grab a win away from
Hutchinson. Colby closed on a 10-2 run over the final twoplus minutes and picked up its first win over Hutchinson since 2012, rallying for an 83-79 win at the Colby Community Building. Tyler Brown led the Blue Dragons with 19 points, going 6 of 9 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Sophomore Saquan Singleton finished with 17 points, six rebounds, and six steals. Josh Baker had 13 points, while Matt Mayers had a career-high 11 points. The Blue Dragons are now 1-3 in games decided by five points or less. The team will play against Barton for its next game.
