Looking after anaerobic fungi in horses Supplied by FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION Anaerobic fungi live in the horses’ hindguts and they are responsible for an estimated 3040% of the fibre fermentation that occurs there. As well as thinking about how diet might affect our horse’s hindgut bacterial populations, we also need to think about how it might affect their anaerobic fungal populations. The problem is that we know so little about them that we don’t know what is good and not so good for the anaerobic fungi in our horses. Information on what we know so far was presented at European Equine Health and Nutrition Conference by Dr Joan Edwards. Dr Edwards described the fungi as having potent fibre-degrading enzymes, giving them an important role in the digestion process. These anaerobic fungi can survive outside of the horse’s gut, too, and are seemingly resistant to both oxygen (which kills many anaerobic bacteria that live in the hindgut) and desiccation (drying out).
Little is known about anaerobic fungi and the relationship to horse health.
One theory is that by looking after the bacteria in a horse’s hindgut, you will also look after the fungi. So keep your horse’s diet high in low fructan forage, keep grain and starch out of the hindgut by feeding only well-cooked grains where necessary and in as small meals as possible and by making changes to the diet slowly.

Feeding old horses with worn out teeth Provided by FEEDXL A problem to sink your teeth into is dealing with older horses who often have worn out teeth, necessitating some changes in feeding. Quite often we are contacted by owners regarding old horses with very poor or no effective grinding teeth (molars) that are losing weight. The first concern is finding feeds that require little chewing and/or can be soaked to make it easier for your older horse to consume safely. Make sure you’re feeding enough. Upon looking at the diets for these horses, we often find that their owners have done a wonderful job of this in addition to forages in the form of chaff, hay cubes or chopped hay but they simply aren’t feeding enough of this forage. So, our tip is feed lots of forage. You should be aiming to feed 2% of an older horse’s ‘ideal bodyweight’ (the weight you would like them to be) in forage they can easily eat per day. This is equivalent to 2 kg for every 100 kg of their bodyweight (or 2 lb for every 100 lb), or 10 kg/day for a 500 kg horse (22 lb/1100 lb horse). Things like chaff (chopped hay) or soaked hay cubes are ideal. You can also use high energy fibres like sugarbeet pulp, soybean or lupin hulls and copra meal. But we recommend you feed at least half of your horse’s forage as chaff or hay cubes so that there is some indigestible fibre in the
mix to keep your horse’s gut full and reduce the risk of colic. A common mistake: measure by weight, not by your eye. To avoid the trap of thinking you are feeding enough forage but actually are not, please weigh what you are feeding - 2 litres of chaff only weighs around 250 grams, so 10 kg of chaff could be as much as 40 litres of chaff per day, which looks like a lot!

Coping with heat stress - anhydrosis By DAVID LOVELL BSVS Well here we go again. Summer is now officially here but the way the days have been, one would have thought it started several weeks ago. It has been very hot and the likelihood is that it will only become hotter. Even more of concern is the prediction that we are in for a El Nino summer which can mean above average rainfall. Combined with the heat, the humidity will become oppressive. Most of us hide in the shade, avoid any strenuous activity, and do whatever we can to keep cool. All animals are stressed by heat but most are able to similarly take steps to adapt to the climate. Our horses are the same and if left alone, they cope well enough. However, the nature of their primary use, being ridden in some form of human pleasure activity, (rarely work these

in the heat. Hopefully we can give horses a similar benefit. When the horse commences to exercise and muscle contracts, energy must be utilised to power the muscle contractions. Biochemical pathways in the muscle fibres process energy stored in the tissues. This energy is obtained from feed in the digestive system and stored as fat and starch. The process of converting stored energy into mechanical energy for muscle contraction is very inefficient and at least 60% is wasted and lost as heat energy. This has the effect of raising the core muscle and body temperature. As we all know, horses are very powerful animals with an enormous muscle mass. As these muscles work, an unbelievable amount of heat is generated in the muscle mass. Nature dictates that for survival, the body temperature has to be maintained at very close to 38 degrees and so it is important for the body to be able to get rid of this wasted heat energy when exercising. In the horse, most heat dissipation is via the evaporation of sweat and radiation from the skin into the surrounding atmosphere. When the environmental temperature is in the mid 20s and humidity is low, this process is
quite efficient and the horse remains comfortable. In mid summer when the temperatures are in the low 30s and humidity is high, heat loss is very inefficient and the horse overheats. Nerve centres in the brain respond to this and in an attempt at self-preservation, the horse starts to pant and breathe rapidly as another attempt at heat loss by exchange of heat with the environmental air breathed into the lungs. Compare this with the dog, which does not sweat at all and relies entirely on panting for heat loss. Anhydrosis or "Puffs" is a condition in horses where basically the sweat glands lose the ability to function. This is thought to be the result of an extended period of over stimulation of the glands to the point where they lose the ability to respond to adrenalin and simply "wear out". CLINICAL SIGNS: o Absence of sweat - partial or complete o Panting respiratory rate even at rest, but particularly after exercise o Hair loss, particularly around the face and neck o Exercise intolerance o General depression and ill thrift Continued page 7

Heat affects nearly all horses adversely From page 6
DIAGNOSIS: o Clinical signs and physical examination o Adrenaline tests - different concentrations of adrenaline are injected under the skin and the local sweating response is assessed. However, many horses that have temporary sweating problems will respond normally to these tests giving many false negatives. I believe clinical signs and history are probably enough to make a diagnosis. Owners who have researched the issue, often ask for an adrenalin test, which is theoretically the correct thing to do, but unfortunately an unwanted side effect is the development of an unsightly patch of white hair at the site. The most common question or symptom that clients see is the panting or rapid respiration. Many owners suspect that there is a respiratory problem with their horse. It is fair to say that nearly all horses in our region are affected to some degree and most will "puff" after exercise. In particular, racehorses can be very severely affected because of the tremendous energy requirements for a race. They very often overheat and it is a very common cause of poor performance and loss of form.
Do whatever you can to cool the horse. TREATMENT: o There is no treatment, the problem is the environment. o No medications are effective! o Do whatever you can to cool the horse, hosing, ice boots, swim, fans, etc. all play a part but nothing counteracts the effects of a 35C day o Always ensure your horse has access to plenty of water MANAGEMENT and PREVENTION: This is primarily an environmental condition and the underlying problem is that the horse is poorly adapted to living in the tropics. The heat affects nearly all horses adversely and most are uncomfortable during the hot time of the year.
Fortunately very few of these horses in this area progress to true clinical anhydrosis. Places like Townsville and Cairns and in particular, Singapore, have many clinical horses. In our climate, most horses can be perfectly functional during the rest of the year when conditions are more equitable. If your horse is seriously affected, the simplest thing is simply to spell the horse over the really bad months and plan your training and competition for the rest of the year. Fortunately most of the competitive year in most sports complies with this approach. If you have to train your horse during the bad months, most people tend to get up and
work the horse early in the morning. I firmly believe this to be an incorrect approach and very often the early mornings are extremely hot and humid, the horse heats up, and then the day simply becomes more and more oppressive. It is usually much more satisfactory to work the horse in the early evening when at least the worst heat of the day has passed and in most cases, there is at least a strong breeze to help dissipate the heat and evaporation from sweat. If you feel your horse is having some problems, you should consult with your veterinarian. The horse should be examined to ensure there is no underlying respiratory system problem, and then a plan developed to allow the best management of the horse. Nearly all horses with heat intolerance can be managed to allow them to perform satisfactorily for the rest of the year. The majority of horses will commence sweating again later in the cooler months and be perfectly normal until the next summer. Sufficient to say is that common sense should prevail, and this is a very good time of the year to give our horses a break. Let them relax, avoid the sometimes serious effects of stress on the animal, and come back refreshed as soon as the hot humid conditions end.

How to feed a horse that won’t sweat By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM Anhydrosis, or the inability to sweat, is a serious condition that affects horses in hot and humid climates. Horses rely heavily on sweating to cool themselves down and keep their core body temperature within a normal range. Sweat wets the horse’s skin and then as it evaporates it takes heat with it, effectively creating an evaporative cooling system for the horse. In some horses however, for reasons largely still unknown, a horse’s sweat glands either partially or fully quit producing sweat. These horses find it very difficult to stay cool and need to resort to offloading heat via their lungs by breathing harder and faster than you would expect them to, which is why horses with this condition are often said to ‘have the puffs’. In many situations though, puffing is not effective enough, so horses that can’t sweat are at serious risk of hyperthermia which wreaks all sorts of havoc in the body and if not dealt with effectively will eventually result in death. The right feeding strategy may help While we don’t understand what causes anhydrosis it does appear that for some horses certain nutritional strategies can help. Tips for feeding horses with anhydrosis include: 1. ALWAYS MEET ELECTROLYTE REQUIREMENTS IN THE DIET
Salt licks will help meet the horses requirements
It is likely some horses stop sweating simply because they run out of electrolytes. The major electrolytes found in sweat are sodium, chloride and potassium. The two most commonly deficient electrolytes in a horse’s diet are sodium and chloride and these are the components of ordinary old salt. Use FeedXL to assess your horse’s requirement for the electrolyte minerals and use plain salt and/or an electrolyte supplement to meet requirements. Horses on forage-based diets should be receiving lots of potassium from their forage
so in most cases all you need to add is plain salt. 2. ALWAYS PROVIDE ACCESS TO FREE CHOICE ROCK SALT A horse will seek salt out when it knows it needs it, so providing free access to loose rock salt allows them to eat as much or as little as they need to meet their requirements. In very hot and humid climates avoid the use of salt blocks as it is difficult for a horse to lick enough salt off to meet requirements when they need a lot of salt. Continued page 9

Meeting your horse’s requirements From page 8 3. FEED CONTROLLED AMOUNTS OF PROTEIN Diets that are too high in protein have a couple of negative effects on horses that can’t sweat. The first is that protein generates a lot of heat during the process of digestion and metabolism which adds to the heat load a horse needs to get rid of to keep its body temperature normal. For most horses this is usually not an issue as they are able to sweat and easily dissipate the excess heat. But when a horse isn’t able to sweat, it just makes their job of staying cool even more difficult. The second is that when protein is fed in excess the horse needs to get rid of the excess nitrogen contained in the protein. In a healthy horse the kidneys perform this task without hassle. But a lot of water and electrolyte are excreted with the nitrogen, so potentially it can lead to dehydration and electrolyte deficiency, neither of which will help a horse that can’t sweat properly in the first place. To keep protein in diets low, restrict the amount of forages and feeds that are high in protein like lucerne, copra meal, lupins, faba beans, sunflower/soybean/canola meals, pollard and rice bran and rely more on grassy pasture and hay, oils, low protein fibres like beet pulp and lower protein cooked cereal grains (where it is safe to do so). FOR HORSES IN WORK, CONSIDER USING A LOWER FORAGE DIET When the fibre contained in forages is fermented in the hindgut a lot of heat is produced which then increases the amount of heat a horse needs to get rid of to keep its body temperature normal. By reducing the amount of forage and therefore the amount of fibre in a diet you will reduce the heat load placed on a horse. To maintain the horse’s required energy intake you can add oil (the best option as it produces the least heat) and/or cooked grains to the diet. It is essential that you feed

well-cooked grains, with extruded grains being the best option, as the starch contained within these grains will be digested in the small intestine. Feeding uncooked or poorly cooked grains will lead to a lot of fermentation and heat production in the hindgut and should be avoided for all horses in hot climates. Please note: Never reduce forage intake below 1 kg/100 kg of bodyweight and be mindful of the increased risk of stomach ulcers for horses on low forage diets. Using slow feeders is highly recommended. It is also essential to have your horse’s stomach full of forage before it is worked. 5. MAKE SURE THE DIET YOU FEED IS BALANCED There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that some mineral and vitamin deficiencies may contribute to a horse’s inability to sweat. The best way to counteract this is to make sure what you are feeding is meeting all of your horse’s requirements for macro and trace-minerals and vitamins. FeedXL will make sure you can achieve this! If you have a horse with anhydrosis it is strongly recommended you seek veterinary
advice. Aggressive environmental management of these horses to keep them cool is the best way to manage their condition. USEFUL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES INCLUDE: 1. Always provide access to shade and cool to cold drinking water. 2. Keep them under fans and water misters where possible during the day. 3. Turn them out at night only if possible. 4. Only work them if your veterinarian advises it is safe to do so and then only work them during the very early morning when it is coolest and only to the level they can comfortably handle. 5. Cool them down quickly and effectively with hosing and fans post work until their rectal temperature has returned to normal. 6. If these strategies aren’t effective in keeping your horse’s body temperature within a safe range, the horse will need to be moved to a cooler climate. Often, and again for reasons we don’t understand, horses will start to sweat again when they move to a cooler environment.

Monitering your horses digital pulse The digital pulse provides key information with regards to the health of a horse’s hooves. When taking pulses, you are feeling the blood flowing through the artery into the hooves. In a healthy horse, the digital pulse is quite hard to find because the normal flow of blood is unrestricted. However, when there is inflammation in the hoof, the blood flow is restricted and as a result backs up in the artery, making the pulse feel much stronger. The artery pushes the blood into the hoof. When there is inflammation, there is no longer enough 'room' within the hoof capsule. Essentially, the hoof pushes the blood back into the artery. This is what causes the bounding or bounce of the pulse. The more inflammation there is in the hoof, the stronger the bounce. There is some natural variation in pulse strength. All horses are different, so checking pulses frequently will help you learn to define when your horse is `normal’. An easily felt equine digital pulse is commonly called a bounding digital pulse. The sensation is like a throbbing headache or an injured finger. A bounding equine digital pulse is a red flag. It is telling you that your horse may have a health issue. Slightly stronger is not as alarming as very strong. If the pulse seems stronger than normal, make sure to check a few times before assuming something is wrong. Stronger pulses indicate inflammation or

pain. Compare pulses in all four feet. This way, abnormalities in one hoof will be more apparent. If there is a bounding pulse in only one hoof, then suspect a localized issue, possibly an abscess or maybe a bruise. If, on the other hand, you are noticing foot discomfort, personality changes or anything that leads you to believe he is not doing well, then suspect laminitis. If the conditions causing inflammation are addressed quickly, the horse should improve rapidly with very few complications. This is why taking pulses is such a useful management tool. Trust yourself and your horse. If the horse looks miserable or you are overly alarmed, call your veterinarian. Use common sense.
Learning to take digital pulse Normal equine digital pulses can be very hard to detect. If you are touching the correct area of the leg and having a hard time finding the pulse, then more than likely, the pulse is normal. There are two noticeable grooves in the lower leg. 1.) Between the flexor tendons and suspensory ligament. 2.) Between the cannon bone and suspensory ligament. The vein/artery/nerve run in the groove formed between the flexor tendons and the suspensory. The veins, Arteries and Nerves (VAN) are bundled together. When you take the digital pulse, it is blood flowing through the artery that you feel. Using your fingertips is the most sensitive way to check pulses. Lay your fingers over the whole area. Th easiesat spot to find the digital pulse, is between the coronary band and the fetlock. -Using your pointer and middle finger, start at the front of the pastern half way between the fetlock and the coronary band. -Move your fingers towards the back of the pastern applying some pressure until you find a little groove. You can roll your fingers over this area until you feel a slight pulse. If you press too hard, you will pinch it off, and not hard enough and you won’t find it. -Each leg will have two little groovy areas to find a pulse. Be sure to check both sides on each hoof.

The Thumps “Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter ” Provided by RANVET.COM.AU Many off you might have heard the term “The Thumps”, if you have never seen a horse suffering from this, we can help you to know what it is, identify the symptoms and what to do if your horse does get the Thumps. The proper name for this condition is “Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter (SDF)”. It occurs when the diaphragm contracts in sync with the heartbeat. This can result in a thumping like noise or a hiccup. In fact, it is just like when we get the hiccups which is harmless for us, but when a horse develops this, it can mean a more serious under lying problem. The symptoms can be just minor twitches usually in the flank area, in more several cases whole body tremors, weakness or cardiac arrhythmias. So how does this happen? The phrenic nerve controls the diaphragm via signals from the brain, this nerve runs alongside the heart. Sometimes this nerve can become hypersensitive and instead of reacting to its normal signals it starts to react to stimulus from the electrical impulses coming from the heart. That is why when a horse shows symptoms (hiccups) they will occur in regular intervals in line with the heartbeat. The concerning thing is to why this nerve becomes sensitive, it is generally related to dehydration, mineral and electrolyte loss. It is most common in horses that have a more intense work regime and sweat a lot such as racehorses, eventers and show jumpers, but it can be seen in any horse that may have become dehydrated or had significant electrolyte loss via intense sweating or fluid loss.

How is it resolved or treated? Mild cases will generally resolve on their own once rehydration has occurred and electrolytes have been replenished. However, in more severe cases it may be necessary to call your veterinarian to come and help your horse recover. The best cure for The Thumps however is prevention. Make sure you horse has a good clean water supply, keep them hydrated and add an electrolyte supplement to your feed ration such as Ranvet’s Salkavite or Electrolyte Replacer, even in winter months if your horse is working hard and prone to sweating or after a long trip. The addition of an electrolyte paste when competing, travelling or when doing hard work, will also be a great addition and has the added bonus of helping your horse recover faster.

Australian World Cup Qualifying League Title BY EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Phillip Lever has secured the 2025 Australian World Cup Qualifying League title following the conclusion of the qualifying season, finishing at the top of the standings after a consistent campaign across the series. Ground work and educating behaviour By TANJA KRAUS Ground work is something that many of us have been shown, and that many of us do before riding, or when we are short of time, instead of riding. Phil and I were chatting the other day about a couple of things we have heard from students recently, which made us think about the perception of ground work, the first one being that ground work 'gets a horse excited' and so ground work is avoided with that horse. If ground work gets your horse elevated, then the elevation was already there, under the surface waiting to come out - the ground work simply reveals it. Often because we are more confident on the ground, we ask a horse to walk, trot and canter on the ground, and all of a sudden the horse gets "wound up". So we think it is the ground work that is responsible for that, and we decide to get on and ride, but, because we are a

little more reserved when we ride, we may stay in the walk, and only trot a little bit, and the horse remains "calm". So we believe that it is the ground work stirring the horse up, instead of realising that when we are on the horse, we are 'stealing rides' and keeping it so slow and calm that the
horse doesn't reveal his bubbles. This works until something else gives the horse cause to move quickly - like a spook, and then those bubbles that were under the surface come bubbling up. Another is the idea that simply doing ground work gets all the
bubbles out - the horse does get lunged around, and might do some jumps or bucks. We just go on with our groundwork to allow him to "get it out of his system". What we don't realise is that we should be intervening when the horse demonstrates 'undesirable' behaviour, and correcting it while they are online, otherwise we are simply getting them fitter, and letting them practice their bucking. Intervention is key to help the horse understand that you don't like that behaviour, and also to educate the horse that he doesn't have to do those things. After all, his undesirable behaviour is just communication - its his way of saying "I’m uncomfortable and all I know to do right now is to buck". If we take the time to show him what to do instead, then we have not only built confidence, but we have built a skill that will translate into the saddle.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
T
he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Exell maintains perfect Driving record Provided by EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Australia’s Boyd Exell has continued his commanding start to the FEI Driving World Cup™ 2025–26 season, claiming his fifth consecutive victory at the fifth leg of the series in Geneva, Switzerland. The result sees the Australian driver remain unbeaten after five starts and further extends his lead at the top of the World Cup standings. Facing strong international opposition, including Belgian challenger Dries Degrieck, Boyd once again delivered when it mattered most. While Degrieck recorded faster times in the opening rounds on both days of competition, Boyd’s experience and execution in the drive-offs proved decisive. He claimed victory with a winning time of 153.06. In the opening competition, Boyd set the early benchmark with the fastest first-round time but incurred four penalties after dislodging a ball. That result left the door open for Degrieck, who followed with a determined drive at just his second event of the season.

and adaptability that continues to separate him from the field. “The horses got faster in the second round,” Boyd said. “My wheelers got wind in their lungs and they started to fly, so it was fantastic to drive. “Dries was close here and he has been close before. He is a very strong competitor.”
