The Horse Report Regulations for protection of horses from abuse
Supplied by EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA
Equestrian Australia advises members that a former member has recently been found guilty for animal cruelty relating to a horse, in the Magistrates Court of breaching the Animal Welfare Act. The individual has the right to appeal any decision. Equestrian Australia will continue to liaise with RSPCAto monitor developments and provide further updates to members as the legal process progresses.
Equestrian Australia takes the welfare of horses very seriously and will continue to act in accordance with its rules and procedures where concerns are raised.
Equestrian Australia wishes to take this opportunity to remind all members of their obligations under Equestrian Australia's General Regulations, in particular of Article 141 and 142.
Article 141 – Protection of Horses Mandates strict welfare standards for all affiliated disciplines.
Key Aspects of Article 141:
Sensory Hair Protection: removing, clipping, or shaving a horse's whiskers is prohibited to maintain sensory awareness.
Auricle (Ear) Hair: removing or shortening hair inside the ear is forbidden.
Aground jury, in consultation with the veterinary delegate, will determine if a horse is fit to continue in a competition if
it becomes injured or suffering from illness during an Event
Article 142 - Abuse of horses
Strictly prohibits any action that causes or is likely to cause pain or unnecessary discomfort to a horse at anytime.
It covers cruel training methods, excessive whipping, and improper gear usage. Violations can lead to severe penalties, including fines and long-term suspensions.
The regulation specifically bans, but is not limited to, the following:
Rapping: Hitting a horse's legs with a pole or other object to train it to jump higher.
Abusive Riding/Training: Excessive use of whips, spurs, or bits.
Physical Misuse: Kicking, whipping, or intentionally injuring a horse.
Inadequate Care: Failing to provide for a
horse’s health or ignoring injuries.
Improper Tack: Using equipment that causes pain, such as, for example, a tight noseband.
The FEI Tribunal can impose sanctions ranging from warnings to disqualification, fines, and multi-year or life suspensions for abuse of horses.
Anyone can report suspected abuse to the FEI, Equestrian Australia and other bodies
Members are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these Articles and ensure they understand what is required of them, both under the General Regulations and under the relevant animal welfare legislation in their state or territory.

The Horse Report Ovarian Torsion in mares and how bodywork can help
By Dr ANGELIQUE BARBARA, Founder of Holistic Animal Studies
Ovarian torsion—also sometimes referred to informally as a “flipped ovary”—is a condition that can cause discomfort, behavioral changes, and performance issues in mares.
While it’s not commonly diagnosed in general veterinary practice due to the complexity of confirming it without imaging or surgery, many equine practitioners and bodyworkers observe clear patterns of pain and restriction that point to tension in the pelvic and ovarian ligaments.
Let’s take a deeper look at what ovarian torsion is, how it may present, and how bodywork can offer much-needed support.
What is Ovarian Torsion?
Ovarian torsion refers to the partial or complete twisting of the ovary on its supporting ligaments, which can potentially compromise blood flow and cause significant pain. In horses, it’s believed that tension or strain on the ovarian ligaments—often due to pelvic misalignment, sacral restrictions, or trauma—may cause the ovary to shift abnormally or create chronic stress in the area.
While true torsion requiring surgical intervention is rare, ligament strain or imbalance can create symptoms that mimic torsion, especially in performance mares under heavy physical and hormonal demands.
Signs of Ovarian Torsion or Torsion-like symptoms
* Mares experiencing this kind of pelvic or reproductive imbalance may show:
* Sensitivity along the flanks or lumbar area
* Resistance to collection
* Difficulty with lead changes
* Bucking under saddle
* Mood swings or aggression, particularly around estrus
* Pain reactions when palpating the lower back or gluteals
If your mare’s behavior shifts suddenly or you notice persistent issues with balance or stride, it's important to rule out both reproductive and musculoskeletal causes.
How bodywork can help
Holistic bodywork doesn’t diagnose Ovarian Torsion—but it can address the musculoskeletal and fascial restrictions that may be contributing to ovarian ligament tension.
These modalities can offer your mare physical and energetic relief:
- Craniosacral Therapy
This gentle technique helps release restrictions in the sacrum, pelvis, and cranial bones, restoring balance to the nervous system and fascia.
It’s particularly helpful when the body is holding trauma in the reproductive or sacral area.
- Equine Massage Massage therapy can help reduce muscular tension in the
heat cycles or after strenuous activity.
- Acupressure & Meridian Work
Focusing on points along the conception vessel and spleen meridians can help regulate the reproductive system, calm irritability, and support energetic harmony in the pelvic organs.
- Supporting the Whole Mare Ovarian torsion or tension isn’t just a physical issue—it often has emotional and energetic components.
Many mares under stress from intense training, hormonal fluctuations, or emotional trauma will hold tension in their sacral region.
lumbar and pelvic regions, increase circulation, and bring awareness to hidden compensations or imbalances.
It supports relaxation and tissue recovery around the reproductive organs.
- Kinesiology Taping Taping the lumbar spine, sacroiliac area, or abdominal region can help improve fascial glide, support posture, and reduce inflammation, especially during
Holistic bodywork allows the practitioner to address not just the structural imbalances, but also to create a safe space for the mare to release deeply held emotional layers.
If you suspect your mare is showing signs of ovarian discomfort or pelvic tension, bodywork can be a powerful tool to restore comfort, balance, and well-being.
It’s not about replacing veterinary care—it’s about working with the body to support deeper healing from the inside out.
Selected bodywork can help address Ovarian Torsion.

The Horse Report What’s the recommended meal size for a horse?
By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM
We have all been told ‘little and often’when it comes to feeding - but why?
Well, when you consider horses are ‘grazers’ and their gut has been designed to work best with small amounts being consumed constantly over long periods of the day and night (they eat for up to 17 hours a day), it makes sense that horses should be fed small meals frequently.
But here is a visual (in words) on why it is best to feed little and often.
In the horse’s small intestine there are things called enzymes, which are like tiny pairs of scissors.
An enzyme’s job is to cut big things like protein, starch and fats up into very small things like amino acids (the building blocks of protein), glucose (the building block of starch) and fatty acids (a building block of fats).
If these proteins, starches and fats don’t get chopped up they will not get absorbed because they are far too big to cross the intestinal wall intact.
So for absorption to occur, these enzymes must chop the big stuff into little stuff. Picture this… imagine you have a pair of scissors and are tasked with the job of cutting up a long piece of ribbon.
The ribbon is trailing from a person going past you very slowly so if you have plenty of time to chop the ribbon multiple times, you can get it into small pieces.
This is what happens in the gut.
If a piece of protein for example goes moving through the small intestine very very slowly, the little enzymes have plenty of time to chop it up into amino acids so it can be absorbed.
Now imagine if the person holding the ribbon runs past you and you have to chop it up.
You might get one shot at it before it is gone. And this is exactly what happens in the gut. If feed is moving too quickly through the gut the poor little enzymes simply don’t get enough time to chop anything up - meaning
the feed simply won’t be absorbed. So back to meal size and the little and often concept.
When you feed small meals, the feed will move nice and slowly through the gut and the enzymes will be able to do their job and fully digest it so your horse gains full benefit.
Feed large meals and all of a sudden you increase the speed with which it will travel through the gut and reduce the amount of time the enzymes have to do their cutting, meaning your horse misses out on a lot of the value from that feed.
It will be digested to some extent in the hind gut but a lot of value is lost (and your money wasted).
So while not the only reason you should feed little and often, it is a really important one to keep in mind.
If you have a horse struggling to gain weight eating huge feeds, something to consider is that you might find you get better results by feeding less.
www.feedxl.com
Allowing horses to eat slowly and often, lets gut enzymes do their job better.
It can be a real challenge to workout precisely what your horse requires to support him or her nutritionally without breaking the bank. As an equine nutritionist, I often hear from clients who are overwhelmed by the myriad of products available, and the costs that can quickly add up to more than $7.50 a day. For many horse owners, this simply isn't feasible.
So, how do we navigate this tight budget while ensuring our horses receive the nutrition they need to perform at their best?
Let's start with the foundation of your horse's diet: fibre.
Quality fibre is your best investment. It's not just about filling a bucket; it's about honouring your horse's natural digestive system. The more we can feed our horses like horses, the less likely we are to face costly veterinary bills down the line.
Think about it: a diet rich in clean, dust-free fibre can help prevent conditions like gastric ulcers and colic, literally eliminate the cost and reliance on expensive prepared feeds that simply do not suit every horse, because the old saying 'one size does not fit all' is absolutely 100% correct.
But let's be real-while fibre is essential, it can't do it all. As the seasons change, the quality and availability of pasture and hay can fluctuate.
Now there is a massive shortage of hay all around Australia not to mention the price increases per bale and now freight increases. This is where a good a feed like EquiCube and a balancing supplement comes into play. When selecting a feed, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's directions.
Don't be lured in by the lower price of performance or senior feeds if you're only feeding around 500g. These feeds often require larger amounts to meet your horse's nutritional needs. The Risk here is these feeds have a recommended feed rate and they contain vitamins and minerals per kilo. If you are not feeding the recommended feed rates, then your horse is not receiving the correct nutrient intake. In most cases the feed rates on these bags of feed are too high and the average horse does not require that level of feed. If you underfeed or overfeed you are creating a nutritional imbalance. Investing in a feed such as a EquiCube may
just be the answer you're looking for. Not only saving money but also being in complete control of the nutritional component. Yes, it may cost more per bag but feeding it as directed can save you money in the long run by preventing deficiencies that could lead to additional health issues.
EquiCube feeds are also nutritionally dense so therefore the feed rate is naturally a lot lower All other feeds on the market. It is very likely in these tough economic times that you will literally have your feed bill or even less this is general feedback we are receiving with this beautiful feed. What makes this feed so unique?
These feeds are all hay based and contain no byproducts or ingredients that are not suited to the species naturally. Long stem fibre is not only the healthiest way to feed your horse, but it also supports your horses gut microbiome long term. EquiCube is a complete feed and there is no requirement for extra chaffs only hay and pasture. EquiCube is very cost effective with the average horse only requiring 500-1kg per day which can be as little as $1.09-$2.20 per day plus hays and the required supplements. For my own horse he is in full work and is on a mix of AlphaFibre and StudNSport 700g per day plus hay and he is on Hi Form Oxydane top up of 5g, ProflamAid Plus 10g for muscle and joint prevention, BioEquus 5g for gut health. All Hi Form formulas are highly concentrated as they are pure form with no fillers or unsuitable additives.
There are three feeds in the range, because why would you need more than three?
Each feed contains one of our daily supplements so you can be comfortable knowing that your horse is receiving everything that he or she needs. The great part of this nutrition system is that you can increase and decrease the feed and increase and decrease your daily supplement to achieve the perfect nutritional support for your horse's needs individually. It is that simple and so easy to manage. You will be guaranteed to not only improve your horse's health but also your pocket.

Essentials for your horses every day
From page 8
Now, let's not forget the essentials. Every horse needs:
1. Fresh, clean water-always.
2. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially for those not grazing on pasture for long hours AlphFlax oil is a great option.
3. And a good daily formula.
4. Plenty of hay or grazing
When it comes to supplements, remember that each horse is unique.
Does your horse have specific health conditions that require additional support?
Are you left with a budget for a joint supplement?
Be intentional about what you add to your horse's diet. Don't simply follow the trends online; what works for one horse may not be suitable for another. And if your budget doesn't allow for extras, that's okay, focus on a solid base diet first.
We recommend our ProflamAid Plus for arthritis and joint support, 35 years of use does not lie, safe reliable and very cost effective.
We offer free nutritional consultations, and we have a range of specialist practitioners that can assist you.
We can help you tailor a diet that meets both your horse's needs and your budget. The peace of mind that comes from knowing you're doing right by your horse is invalu-
able.
In conclusion, feeding horses on a budget is not only possible but can also be done effectively with a little knowledge and planning. By prioritizing quality fibre, selecting the right feeds, and being mindful of your horse's individual needs, you can ensure your equine partner thrives without straining your finances.

Should I feed Psyllium to my horse?
Supplied by RANVET
Many horse managers, especially those that may live on sandy soil, or have their horses in sand yards, will feed psyllium at one time or another.
With the dry conditions we may be facing, it is also a practice popping up in conversation regularly.
It leaves the question to be asked, should I feed psyllium?
The use of psyllium as an additive is nothing new, it has been used to help prevent and treat sand colic for many years.
The feeding of psyllium works best when used as part of a broader management plan. If your horse does have a risk of getting sand colic a treatment and prevention plan is best, this can be discussed with your veterinarian. Sand is generally picked up when horses are grazing or picking feed up off the ground. It unfortunately doesn’t move well through the digestive tract and over time accumulates in the large intestine.
Ahorse that lives in a sandy environment may show signs such as weight loss, continued digestive issues, and decreased appetite. Over time this may lead to:
Colic (in severe cases surgery)
Poor nutrient absorption
Constipation or scouring
Irritation to the lining of both the stomach and intestine
Psyllium is a natural product that comes from the husk of seeds from Plantago Ovata plant.
It is high in soluble fibre and when exposed to water, it turns into a gel-like substance that expands.
It’s this gel that adheres to the sand in the gut and helps it move through the digestive system.
Benefits of psyllium:
- Can help in the prevention of sand colic and the accumulation of sand in the gut
- Known to support good digestive health, helping to improve gut function
Psyllium can help horses living in sandy soils.
Assists in clearing sand from digestive system
- Promotes regular bowel movements
- Helps alleviate constipation as it has a mild laxative effect
- Support growth of good bacteria in the gut
Improved faecal texture
- Helps provide a protective coating for the stomach, which may help reduce irritation, this in turn may assist with other digestive issues.
Correct dosage will depend on weight, especially for foals and smaller horses.
Below is a guide only, appropriate dosages should be discussed with your veterinarian.
Adult horses: 450kg-500kg, 180-200g daily for 5 days
Ponies: 250-350kg, 90-150g daily for 5 days
Foals and Miniatures: 50-90g daily for 5 days
Always make sure your horse has access to plenty of clean fresh water as psyllium absorbs so much moisture you don’t want your horse getting dehydrated. Avoid feeding psyllium every day, it is best
used for shorter periods of 5 days, once a month.
Do not wet psyllium prior to feeding, this can lead to the possibility of choke as the husk swells.
It can however be mixed with oil to help improve the palatability, or there are some pelleted forms available.
How do I know if the treatment is working?
You may be able to see the sand in your horse’s manure.
You can try placing some manure in a bucket of water, the sand should make its way to the bottom of the bucket as the manure dissolves.
Your horse should appear happier and not as uncomfortable.
Improved appetite.
Overall condition should improve.
Before starting your horse on psyllium or if you horse does appear unwell, call your veterinarian for assistance to determine the best treatment available.

Ulcereze A New Approach to Equine Gastric Health
Provided by Brinicombe
Ulcereze is a UK-developed gastric support supplement built on patented technology designed to help maintain a healthier stomach environment in horses.
Made from a combination of natural, registered feed ingredients, it works synergistically to support gastric comfort and digestive stability-particularly for horses prone to colic, gastritis, or gastric ulcers . Through daily feeding, the active compounds are absorbed via the gut wall and into the bloodstream, where they help reinforce stomach lining integrity.
Laboratory studies suggest the patented ingredients may interfere with the survival mechanisms of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium capable of thriving in acidic conditions.
By inhibiting urease activity and promoting natural lysozyme production, Ulcereze supports a healthier gastric environment while helping disrupt bacterial replication. Horse owners commonly report calmer behaviour, improved post-exercise appetite, and better body condition within the first month of use. Unlike omeprazole-based treatments, Ulcereze uses only natural feed materials, allowing continuous use during training and competition with no withdrawal period.
With over 15 years of development supported by UK government-funded research at Rothamsted Research and the University of Exeter, the technology now carries patents in the UK and Australia, with further approvals pending globally. Ulcereze is recommended as both a daily preventive measure and a supportive aid during rest periods to help heal and stabilise the gastric system ahead of training cycles.

Beware: Perfect storm for mycotoxins
By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Nutritionist, Farmalogic
Warm days, humid nights and lush green paddocks - it's the season horse owners often love.
Unfortunately, it's also perfect weather for fungi and not the good kind.
Hidden in grass, hay, and feed bins, some of these fungi produce toxic compounds called mycotoxins - invisible troublemakers that can wreak havoc on your horse's health, mood, and performance.
What are mycotoxins?
Mycotoxins are poisonous by-products produced by certain bacteria and fungi that grow on forages and grains.
They're a silent problem: they can't be seen, smelled, or tasted.
Once ingested, they can upset the digestive system, damage the intestinal lining and then be absorbed into the bloodstream, affecting everything from the liver and nervous system to the skin and muscles.
Even the pasture itself can be a culprit.
Many ryegrass and tall fescue plants carry endophytes - fungi that help the grass survive pests and drought.
That might sound great for the plant, but not always for the horse.
Many endophytes produce mycotoxins, and according to Agriculture Victoria, around 90% of perennial ryegrass in Australia is infected.
Could mycotoxins be behind your horse's odd behaviour?
Because different mycotoxins affect different body systems, symptoms can vary widelyand often mimic other problems.
Watch for:
- Itchy, sensitive skin or "sunburn" reactions
- Head flicking or spooky, unpredictable behaviour
- Lethargy, tight muscles or stiff, shuffling movement
- Greasy heel or "summer mud fever"
- Dull coat, patchy hair regrowth, or general poor bloom
- Coughing, runny noses, or out-of-character crankiness.
You might notice one horse in the paddock looking dull and reactive, while its mate seems fine - that's because individual tolerance to toxins varies just like allergies in people.
Why this season is high-risk
After a warm, wet summer across much of Australia and New Zealand, fungi have thrived in pastures and stored feeds.
Horses grazing endophyte-infected pastures or eating contaminated hay and grain are at increased risk.
Adding a broad-spectrum mycotoxin binder can make a big difference in keeping horses healthy during these conditions.
Choosing the right mycotoxin Binder
Not all toxin binders work the same way. An effective and safe product must:
- Bind a wide range of relevant mycotoxins and hold them throughout digestion
- Avoid tying up valuable nutrients or medications
- Be proven effective at safe, recommended doses
- Be non-toxic and safe for horses of all ages.
Some modern formulas combine several binding agents, along with antioxidants, botanical extracts, and probiotics to support the gut and immune system while catching multiple toxin types.
Always look for scientific evidence showing that the binder doesn't absorb essential vitamins and minerals.
Prevention starts with feed quality. Store hay and grain in a dry, well-ventilated area and never feed anything that looks damp, mouldy, or smells "off."
Farmalogic Grazaid: Multi-Action Protection Farmalogic Grazaid is designed as a complete risk-management solution against mycotoxins and endotoxins.
It uses synergistic ingredients with several layers of action:
- Mineral and organic binders to capture tox-
ins like aflatoxins and ergot alkaloids.
- Biotransformation agents that safely convert non-polar toxins into harmless metabolites.
- Probiotics and botanicals to defend the gut and support immunity.
- Macrominerals that help guard against "grass-affected" behaviour, muscle tightness, and electrolyte imbalances seen on lush pastures.
Independent testing has confirmed that Grazaid's targeted binders leave essential nutrients available for absorption.
Horses showing ongoing signs of toxin stress may also benefit from the antioxidant support of Farmalogic Melox, which helps reduce the cellular damage caused by toxins. If your horse suddenly turns spooky, itchy, or "not quite right," it might not be their temperament - it could be toxins.
Acting early pays off in smoother rides and happier horses.
You can learn more about managing mycotoxins and protecting horse health in the free Farmalogic ebook, follow the link: (https://au.farmalogicglobal.com/product/m ycotoxins-ebook/)

What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand
There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),
You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you’re probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special?
Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-
The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming Rose-Hip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It’s a joint
antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing
improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity.
Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantand rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-
Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the medication.
Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly
use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints.
How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse?
Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focusing on anti-
the unique compound GOPO.
To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage.
Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to ‘clean’
bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic freeradicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause’s joint pain
The more becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it –a painful cycle.
protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists.
In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural anti-
rich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.

The recent Equestrian Queensland Annual Awards provided a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding achievements, dedication and leadership of many women in the sport.
From athletes, grooms, owners and coaches to volunteers, officials and administrators, women play a vital role in the success and growth of the equestrian community.
While many sports continue to strive for gender equality, equestrian sport stands proudly as one where men and women compete together on an equal playing field, judged by the same standards and competing for the same titles.
Across the disciplines of Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Interschool, Jumping, Show Horse and Vaulting, women contribute enormously to the strength and vibrancy of the sport.
Their involvement extends far beyond the competition arena, with women leading, supporting and developing equestrian sport at every level.
Women play a significant role in positions such as volunteers, officials, coaches and committee members, dedicating their time, expertise and passion to support riders, competitions and the broader equestrian community across Queensland.
The EQ Annual Awards winners exemplify the passion, determination and leadership that women bring to our sport.
Their achievements inspire the next generation of riders and demonstrate the strength and depth of talent within the equestrian community.
On International Women’s Day, we acknowledged all the women who contribute to equestrian sport across all disciplines, from grassroots volunteers and dedicated parents to elite athletes and respected coaches. Thanks to all the women who make equestrian sport in Queensland what it is today.

Whilst some horse owners may clean their paddocks by picking up manure daily, if you cannot collect manure daily, we advise you should clear your paddock of manure at least 1-2 times a week.
There are several reasons why regularly cleaning your paddock of manure are beneficial to your horse and its pasture.
Most horses defecate usually around 6-10 times per day (over the course of a year this equates to around 9 tonnes).
Consider this quantity spread across your paddocks over months and even years. Being selective grazers; horses tend to avoid grazing grass that has been contaminated with manure.
This means that not only is your pasture dirty, but your horse has fewer grassy areas to graze.
If your horse does not defecate in one or two specific areas, then you even run the chance of having more manure littering your pasture than grass.
When horses graze around piles of manure, they can easily ingest worms that end up in their digestive tracts.
Worm eggs are passed in the horse’s droppings.
They then move to the surrounding grass and are ingested again by your horse. Therefore, it is imperative to collect manure from your paddocks on a regular basis, thus reducing the chance of your horse obtaining worms.
Clearing your paddock of manure benefits your horse’s health because it breaks the lifecycle of worms and helps to lower the worm burden.
Cleaning your pastures at least twice a week, is one of the most effective ways to reduce the internal parasite burden on your horses.
Another parasite that thrives off manure are flies.
You may notice the way flies surround a pile of horse manure especially in warmer weather, these are the flies that could potentially go on to irritate your horse. Asimple solution to reducing the number of flies in your paddock is to remove the
manure that helps to attract the flies. Another health benefit to your horse that comes with regular collection of manure is that you can monitor this aspect of your horse’s digestive health.
By collecting manure regularly, you can take note of the consistency, quantity, and appearance of the manure.
By visually analysing the manure you can pick out any abnormalities that may be present in the manure, these abnormalities may indicate either health or dietary concerns that need to be addressed.
It is not only beneficial to your horse to collect manure regularly, but also to the pasture within your paddock.
Leaving piles of manure around your paddock may kill the vegetation beneath the manure and discourage re-growth. Cleaning paddock of manure helps keep your paddocks in tip-top condition, as it allows the grass beneath to breath and receive enough sunlight to regrow. Manure collection is also a great way to observe the condition of your paddock. While you are walking around your horse’s paddock, take note of any damage or potential health hazards.
Early detection of issues such as damaged fencing, potholes, or misplaced rubbish could prevent an accident occurring. Remember the more regularly you clean your horses’paddock of manure the quicker and easier the job will be. If you allow manure to build up, it not only increases the chance of affecting your horse and pasture health, but it also becomes a more time-consuming job when it does come time to clean up the paddock.
Keep your paddocks clean by picking up manure regularly it can benefit both your horse and your paddocks.
Manure pick up can be done with a rake and wheelbarrow or for larger properties their are a number of Manure Vacuums, and Pasture Drags on the market.

“BYE BYE FLY”
QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.
Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:
Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.
It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.
Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.
Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Horse training is a long game - be patient
By TANJA KRAUS
As the saying goes we often overestimate what we can get done in a short time, and underestimate what we can get done in a long time and I see this time and time again in the horse world.
Trainers
Too often riders are fixated on what "they want" and this causes a short term focus - on a competition, or a particular manoeuvre required for a competition.
Once this focus takes over, all of our training becomes about the "goal" that we are working towards, and can make us forget what we have achieved, and more importantly, what we need to achieve before we can "go for the goal"
I see this frequently in my world - due to the name "horsemanship" being in my business name.
I am often a 'last resort' for people who have been having challenges with their horses, sometimes for years, and they are straying from their traditional training over to "horsemanship" to try and fix a particular issue. Once we get the issue taken care of, I will then see them return to their "traditional training" usually because they don't see that the training is what caused the issue in the first place, or, because they don't believe that horsemanship is capable of taking them to where they want to go in a specific discipline.
The funny thing is that consistently working within a specific training method is the very
thing that will gain you the progress. However, when it is done correctly, it takes years to build the horse’s knowledge, athleticism, flexibility, understanding, versatility and emotional maturity - not to mention all of those things within the human too. Anyone who tells me they are moving on from a coach because they haven't progressed is a red flag, because if the coach is still doing basics with you and your horse, it means they aren't at the level that can be
built upon yet.
I fully support moving on from a coach if you don't align with the training method. But to blame a coach for lack of progress, it is time to ask yourself - am I expecting too much too soon, or am I simply not putting the work into what I am being taught ?
Abad workman blames his tools, a bad rider blames his horse, a bad student blames his coach.
Food for thought.
Consistently working on your training will get rewards.

The Australian Pony- a truly versatile horse
Supplied by QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIAN PONY OWNERS AND BREEDERS
The Australian Pony, from its inception, was always purpose bred.
Our Australian Ponies were bred to be hardy, hardworking equines that could stand up to the harsh Australian conditions. This tough pony is noted for its endurance, agility, sure footedness and exceptional temperament
Its ancestry dates back to the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.
The Australian Pony is used in every equine discipline.
Possibly the world’s most versatile pony - a beautiful pony with great bone and substance, renowned for its intelligence, athletic ability, speed, quiet temperament and great mind. It has all the prerequisites for a first-class, modern-day performance pony.
This pony did not just appear as a recognised breed in 1931 at the formation of the Australian Pony Stud Book Society.
It had developed from the time of colonisation and with the importation of the very first equines into Australia.
Thoroughbred, Mountain and Moorland ponies, Timor ponies, Arabians, Manipur and Batik Hill ponies, as well as that little Hungarian pony, Bonnie Charlie, all contributed to the foundation of our breed.
The Australian Pony was a combination of all these genetics and more.
Over 100 years of breeding has gone into this breed for it to become one of the most versatile and outstanding ponies in the world.
The Australian Pony has evolved during this time as Australia’s own pony.
The harsh conditions and vast open spaces of early Australian
settlement demanded a tough, durable pony with a good mind and a comfortable ride, able to work on the farm, deliver the kids to school (usually bareback) and to harness up and take mum to town.
It was suitable and handsome enough to transport the family to Church on Sundays.
The pony continued to develop and a definite type was emerging by the 60s.
In the 70s and 80s a very consistent type of pony, that, if left to develop, would have set a standard easily recognisable as our own true Australian Pony.
Today, the Australian Pony is still an exceptional pony as it can do a hard day’s mustering on an outback Australian station, go to the local agricultural show and compete in hack and child rider classes, then off to a gymkhana to compete in the novelty events. They even capably chase cows in a Campdraft and that’s only mentioning a few of its disciplines and talents.
The purebred Australian Pony is known for its great mind kind and trainable nature and its reliability, it has been used for many equestrian pursuits by children and adult riders or drivers.
It is a very versatile and accomplished pony that excels in the show ring, pony equitation,
English and Western pleasure, pony jumping, sporting classes such as barrel racing, flag and bending races, pony jumping, harness, dressage, pony club and pleasure riding.
It is still used to this day on large and small country properties to muster cattle or sheep and then their young riders can enjoy their ponies by swimming with them in the dams and creeks, after a long day’s work.
The relatively new Inter-school competitions have proved to be an area where Australian Ponies are very proficient.
There are five disciplines for young riders to compete, these being Dressage, Jumping, Eventing, Show Horse and Combined training.
Pony dressage is another discipline that is becoming increasingly popular and once again this pony has risen to the challenge and is highly competitive.
Our Australian Pony will do all of this without complaint and very successfully.
They also make the best children’s ponies from a very young age looking after their little human and, in a lot of cases, the kids use them as playmates.
They don’t need shoeing and live on love, feed and hugs all year round.
Many Australian Ponies have
been highly decorated in their fields of expertise prior to the formation of The Australian Pony Stud Book Society.
There are many records, pictures and results of Australian Ponies, from our very early Royal shows, winning their classes in hand and under saddle.
The Australian Pony should not exceed 14 hands and all colours are acceptable, grey being a dominant colour.
The Queensland Australian Pony Owners and Breeders Group was formed in late 2023 by a few dedicated Australian Pony enthusiasts.
The group’s main function is the preservation and promotion of the Australian Pony whilst being governed by the rules of the Australian Pony Stud Book Society Inc.
We promote the Australian Pony in all equine pursuits and welcome new members or enthusiasts whether you own, breed or are interested in the Australian Pony of today or yesterday.
We produce a quarterly newsletter Aussie Antics, for anyone keen to read it (accessed via our Facebook page).
It provides information to assist new and established owners and breeders through educational articles and details of promotional activities.

Quality Small Thoroughbred Show Mare
Madge is a rare find — a small TB mare with a lovely temperament, correct conformation, and genuine show-ring potential. She is soft, sweet-natured, and very straightforward to handle both on the ground and under saddle.
Aconsistent and reliable ride, Madge is at the very beginning of her showing career but already boasts impressive results — including winning at her first Royal Show under extremely challenging conditions without putting a foot wrong. Her most recent results include winning her novice and open hack 15-15.2hh class at Brisbane Royal 2025.
She would suit a capable teen rider or an adult looking for an uncomplicated and honest mare to enjoy and produce. However is not a beginners horse and does require a confident rider still. With limited outings due to work commitments, she’s only been lightly shown and would thrive in a home with time to bring out her full potential. Easy to handle in every way

Lusty as we call her - needs no introduction to the show world. Ahalf sibling to some amazing EBLprogeny including: EBL Empire EBLEmpress, EBLHavana, EBLHis Royal Highness and EBL Bonds, Lusty has been star from the time she was born.
I bought this mare just broken in for my then 14-year-old daughter and her and Bronte formed an unbelievable team winning at royals and qualifiers all over NSWand QLD as well as winning EANational Interschool Show Horse champions. She has won numerous open and child’s qualifiers and has carried many riders to wins at Sydney Royal and SHC qualifiers. Lusty has way too many accolades to list and is only for sale as Bronte now lives in Brisbane and she is too good to sit in the paddock. She is quiet and easy to handle, float, prep etc but would not suit a timid rider. This mare has never been over shown, due to study commitments and the fact we live in regional NSWso still has so much more to win.
Measuring 15.2hh she is a divine riding class horse and rides a lot bigger. It goes without saying she will only go to an approved, loving home where she will be adored like she has been with us. Lusty has never done dressage as it's not our vibe but she has unlimited potential in that area as she is a lovely mover.
Louie is the epitome of a show hunter, he has substance, movement, presence and extremely well mannered.
Louie would be a perfect amateurs mount/teenagers first hack as he is extremely quiet, don’t let his age fool you, absolutely nothing worries him. You would truly trust him with your grandmother, he is lovely on and off and ground he is the horse you dream of owning in every way, however in saying that Louie is certainly quality enough that if you put a competitive rider on him he’ll for sure he at the top of any line up, he is a perfect Grand National winning hunter. Louie is priced to sell at $35k.

It’s time for our little Flynn to move on to new beginnings with another lucky person.
We have owned Flynn since 3 years old and he has been a pleasure to do anything with. He’s easy to wash, trim, load and float, happily stands at the float all day when out.
He’s been shown in hand and under saddle at many shows and always comes home in the ribbons.
Flynn will make a great child’s show and rider mount, he happily sits in a natural frame and moves over the ground beautifully, he is also suited to a small adult to enjoy as well.
Flynn is a much loved family member and will be very missed, because of this home is most important and price can be negotiated if the home is right.

Highly decorated Large Hunter Galloway with many Supreme & Champion Led/Ridden titles to her name, qualifying for GN, EANationals, & winning at Royal level with her previous owners. Ruby has displayed an impeccable and forgiving temperament for her young rider over the last two years, and is now looking for a new home due to no fault of her own.
Avery competitive show & rider class mount, for an adult or child, there is no reason she won't excel in the dressage arena either schooling all Novice work.
Photos & video taken 15/11/2025 at Buladelah Ag Show after four rides following 6mths off due to her owners personal circumstances, there was no lunge down, she was incredibly easy to prep and a pleasure all day, winning Champion Large Hunter Galloway and carried 17yo rider to Reserve Champion Adult Rider (with no prior familiarisation).
