Jasper’s Vision Therapy Journey Worth Every Mile:
When Rachel and Jason Williams noticed their son Jasper struggling with reading, coordination, and schoolwork, they began looking for answers.
“He had difficulty reading and a general dislike for school work,” Rachel shared. “He was unable to ride a bike or be successful at many sports. He couldn’t skip or catch a ball, and he would quickly lose interest in an activity he had been excited for, like assembling a LEGO set.”
Worth the Work
That all began to change when the Williams family discovered vision therapy at Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center. Despite living hours away in Pierre, Rachel said the decision to commit to therapy was an easy one after hearing how life-changing it had been for other children.
Each week, the family made a six-hour round trip so Jasper could work with his therapist, Tricia. Thankfully, Jasper looked forward to his appointments, and Rachel valued being part of the process. They also prioritized the homework assigned each week at home. “Vision isn’t something we should take for granted,” she reflected.
Life Changing Results
The results have been remarkable. Reading no longer sparks resistance, and while Jasper is still growing in his love for reading, the progress is undeniable. His coordination has shown major improvement. He is on a swimming team, and his performance improved significantly over the course of treatment. Rachel shared how something as simple as being able to catch a tossed pair of socks now leaves Jasper beaming with pride.
The weekly drive was a sacrifice, but it was worth every mile.
Rachel encourages other parents to look into vision therapy at Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center. “After seeing the difference it made for Jasper, I can’t imagine not doing this for a child. It was worth every second,” she said. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with them and loved everyone at the center. They changed our lives forever.”

theBalancingHolidayswith a Blended Family
Blended families are becoming more common, which can make planning things like the holidays more complicated. What’s meant to be a season of peace and joy can quickly turn into a complex web of schedules, travel plans, and traditions—especially when parents, children, and grandchildren all have several Christmases to celebrate.
3 generations - Denise, son Ashton, and granddaughter
photos by Solis Photography
Blakely.
For Denise and Greg, the holidays are a time to embrace it all—the joy, the chaos, and the compromises that come with a large, blended family. In their blended family, they share five grown children and seven grandchildren, each with their own families, traditions, and calendars.
Denise admits she has always dreamed of having a holiday straight out of a Hallmark movie—simple, magical, and full of sparkle. Her love of Christmas shines through in every corner of her home, where over 15 Christmas trees fill the rooms each year.
But Denise also knows that the holidays are about more than twinkling lights and pretty decorations. Over time, she’s learned that the true magic of a blended family Christmas comes from loosening expectations and focusing on what matters most: connection.
Letting Go
Everyone, whether in a blended family or not, has their own holiday “template.” The things you grew up with, your favorite holiday memories, and traditions. Compromising and creating new family traditions can be complicated with just a few people. It can become even more complicated with larger blended families. Each person brings their own version of what the holidays should look like.
Denise has learned and embraced the reality that compromises are necessary. It’s not about the perfect Hallmark-type Christmas; it’s about being with those you love most.
Embracing What Works
Instead of focusing on when or how they gather, they focus on who they get to be with. This shift has allowed them to slow down, spread out celebrations, and create meaningful time with loved ones throughout the entire season.
In a family with so many moving parts, being open to new traditions or ways of doing things is essential. Over the years, they have found that they end up getting more quality time with everyone when they aren’t trying so hard to fit everyone else into their template.
Each year, Denise and Greg also take time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t. If someone feels slighted, they take the time to think about changes they can make next year.
Finding New Ways to Connect
When everyone can’t be together in person, Denise finds other ways to stay connected. She and Greg love to send out Christmas cards every year, keeping family and friends close through updates. Technology has undoubtedly made things easier as well. FaceTiming grandchildren as they open gifts when they can’t be there is a gift in itself.
One of their favorite ways to stay connected beyond Christmas week is through Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa tradition from Greg’s heritage. Celebrated in early December, it invites children to place wooden shoes out, and they receive small gifts. Even though all their children are now adults, they still look forward to this tradition each year! It’s a great way to have a connection point and tradition not connected to Christmas Day.
A Season of Gratitude
As a mother and grandmother, Denise’s perspective on the holidays has deepened with time. She knows that no family gathering will ever be perfect. There will always be busy schedules, pets underfoot, and moments of chaos. But she counts her blessings every day.
The holidays are about so much more than things going your way. Denise hopes her children and grandchildren feel the magic of the season, give back to those in need, embrace creating their own traditions, and deeply know how much they are loved. l

Money Talks Start Early:
How to Handle the ‘Can I Have It?’ Phase Without Going Broke
It was a blissful Target run with my 4-year-old—until I heard the five words every parent dreads: “Mommy, can I have this?” She stared up at me with puppy-dog eyes, clinging to an Elsa doll like her life depended on it. At that moment, I wondered: would this end in a meltdown, bribery, or me walking out $30 poorer?
If your little one is in the “Can I have it?” phase, you’re not alone. Here are five survival strategies to save your wallet—and your sanity.
Set expectations early.
Before you even unbuckle the car seat, set the ground rules. Try: “We’re getting fruit and paper towels. You can look at toys for five minutes, but we’re not buying one today.” Giving them time to process the “look but don’t buy” rule can prevent future meltdowns in Aisle 7.
2
Stay firm (even when they’re extra cute).
Consistency is key. If you said one $5 treat, stick to it. If you said “no toys today,” don’t cave. Backtracking just teaches them that persistence (read: whining) pays off.
3
Get creative with your no’s.
Forgot to set expectations? Try these lines:
“We can’t buy that toy today, but I’ll take a picture for your Christmas list.”
“Let’s put the stuffed toy back with his mommy so they can snuggle. Aw, don’t they look so sweet together?”
It softens the sting of “no” while still holding your ground.
4 5
Let them shop—with their own money.
When kids use their “spend” jar savings, the lesson hits differently. Watching their $8 disappear on a $7.99 toy teaches more about budgeting than any lecture.
Model contentment.
Kids absorb how we talk about money and gratitude. Slip in phrases like:
“I love our cozy home.”
“Isn’t it great we have a warm meal?”
When they see you satisfied with enough, they’ll learn that joy isn’t tied to buying more stuff.
The “Can I have it?” phase doesn’t last forever—but the habits you build now just might.
Remember, every “no” today is helping raise a financially savvy adult tomorrow. l
Sarah is a local mom of two who knows a thing or two about financial literacy. She is the founder of moveHER Money, where she teaches girls how to be financially savvy.
Santa loves Prairie Farms milk and getting letters! These letters are from Holly Peterson’s Kindergarten class. Mrs. Peterson was the ‘hood’s 2025 Educator of the Year. Head to ‘hood online to read the rest of her class’s letters to Santa.

Why is Preventive Maintenance on your HVAC system important?
Do you run your car and do nothing? No, your car requires regular maintenance to increase the life of your car. Items like Tune-up, Oil Change, Filter Replacement. You do all of these and more to maintain your car and keep it running.
Your HVAC system is no different. Annual check-ups to make sure fuel is burning correctly in the furnace. Water panel replacement in the humidifier. Bulb replacement in your UV light system. Proper and consistent filter replacement. Checking electrical components to make sure they are in specs.
Your HVAC system is a complex system that needs to be checked annually to keep it running in tip-top shape, just like you do with your car.
