INGREDIENTS • 4 pieces of marinated and cooked boneless, skinless Chicken Breasts • 2 heads of Romaine Lettuce, washed, trimmed and sliced into quarters or thirds (depending on size) from top to bottom, leaving core on • 4 slices of Precooked Bacon, chopped • 1 cup Croutons • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese, shredded FOR THE MARINADE • 1/4 cup Olive Oil • 1/8 cup Lemon Juice • 1 clove of Garlic, minced

Prep Time: 1 hour to marinade, 30 mins to prepare ı Serves: 4

DIRECTIONS STEP 1. Mix together the marinade and put in a Ziploc bag with the chicken in the fridge for at least an hour. STEP 2. Meanwhile, chop the bacon into small pieces and reserve.

• 1 tsp Dried Oregano

STEP 3. Combine dressing ingredients and put in a food processor and blitz until smooth, and reserve.

• 1/4 tsp Pepper

STEP 4. Preheat BBQ grill to med-high.

FOR THE DRESSING

STEP 5. Brush the romaine wedges with olive oil and place on grill. Keep an eye on them - it won’t take long to grill. Roughly 2 minutes total. Turn after 30 seconds to a minute, and continue until the leaves are slightly charred, but the lettuce should still be a bit crisp near the core. Reserve on a platter.

• 1/2 tsp Salt

• 2-3 cloves of Garlic, peeled • 1 tsp Dijon Mustard • 1 tsp Anchovy Paste • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce • 2 drops Tabasco Sauce • 1/2 Lemon Juice • 1 Egg Yolk • 1/2 cup Olive Oil • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated + additional oil for brushing on the romaine

STEP 6. Once chicken has marinated for an hour, place on the preheated BBQ grill and grill until internal temperature of the chicken is 165°F. STEP 7. Slice each chicken breast across the grain into bite-size pieces and place on top of the grilled romaine platter. STEP 8. Sprinkle the bacon pieces and croutons on over the chicken and romaine, and drizzle the dressing on top. Sprinkle with grated parmesan. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

"In particular, I wanted to brighten the lives of children who have been shuttered in their homes, unable to see their friends and live a normal childhood for over a year," said Ip.

said. "But while we can’t fly or time travel or magically heal someone who is sick, we can save the world in other ways. We can do that by using the powers that we are all born with: kindness, hope, humour... to make the world a better place. That’s

launched (online at lilheroes.ca and @lilheroes.ca on Instagram and Facebook) with support from Ip's family and friends, living up to the small business' slogan of 'Greatness From Small Beginnings'.

"I love the long dry time that comes from using oil paints," remarks David. "It allows me to be more measured in my approach. Other paint mediums force you to rush but oils can be left for long periods of time. Additionally, I just feel you can get richer values using oil paints over other paints such as acrylics." Since discovering his love for oil paints, David has continued to learn and perfect his techniques. His use of bold brush strokes, lots of colour and strong contrast, has been his signature throughout his works, bringing life to his subjects and causing them to leap from the canvas. Throughout the past few years and throughout the pandemic, David has had a steady side business of commissions to paint portraits of people’s pets and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

"I'VE RECEIVED SOME VERY KIND NOTES THAT I’M VERY PROUD OF. TRUTHFULLY, THE ONLY NEGATIVE FEEDBACK COMES FROM WITHIN – I'M MY OWN WORST CRITIC. I'M WORKING TO CHANGE THAT, BUT I’M NOT UNIQUE IN THAT REGARD – ARTISTS CAN BE TOUGH ON THEMSELVES."

So what does the future hold for this emerging artist? Well, his long-term goal is to make his passionate side hustle into a full-time career but as he is well aware, life is complicated and busy (especially with a toddler). "I think I’m a ways away from making the transition from my current career to full-time artist. Until then, I'll hopefully keep making people happy with pet portraits and working hard on my landscape skills."

BURLINGTON Article by Name Here ◆ Photography by Moussa Faddoul

As a photographer, Moussa Faddoul couldn’t be happier to see people back in the community as we slowly transition out of lockdown and back into some sort of normalcy. 8

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

"Like everyone else, the pandemic and stay at home orders have been a challenge," says Moussa. "Now with people getting vaccinated and lockdowns being lifted, the streets and parks have become busier and busier, which for a photographer like myself has been wonderful to see."

A BURLINGTON RESIDENT AND OWNER OF FOTOREFLECTION, MOUSSA DECIDED TO GRAB HIS CAMERA AND HEAD DOWN TO SOUTH BURLINGTON TO SEE THE HAPPENINGS AND CAPTURE THE PEOPLE AS THEY ENJOYED A WARM SUMMER EVENING ALONG THE LAKESHORE. IT ALMOST FELT LIKE OLD TIMES.

"WHEN I TAKE MY CAMERA OUT, I'M NEVER QUITE SURE WHAT I’M GOING TO CAPTURE," REMARKS MOUSSA. "On this day, I wanted to simply observe the people; how are they transitioning? Is there a difference in their behaviour? What I found was a noticeable playfulness in peoples movements, interactions and a sense of purpose compared to the gloomy aimlessness wandering I’ve witnessed throughout the pandemic. If you look at the photos, I believe I've captured that."

MOUSSA'S USE OF LIGHT AND SHADOW THROUGHOUT THESE PHOTOS HELPED TO CONVEY THE IDEA OF TRANSITIONING AS YOU SEE PEOPLE AND OBJECTS MOVING BETWEEN THE DARK SHADOWS TO THE LIGHT. "I FOUND MYSELF DRAWN TO THESE TRANSITIONAL MOMENTS SUCH AS BIKES PASSING BY, A CYCLIST TURNING, FEET MAKING STEPS FORWARD AND KIDS HANGING FROM RAILS."

As the summer continues and people return to the familiar places throughout the community, Moussa and his camera plan on being right there with them… and we couldn’t be happier.

History of RBG RBG began as part of a 1917 improvement project put forth by the City of Hamilton. Thomas Baker McQuesten, politician, lawyer and Chair of the city's Park Management Board, imagined a botanical garden, and in 1927 the City bought 377 acres of land for the project. By 1932 an abandoned gravel pit at Burlington Heights was transformed into the Rock Garden, later considered by many to be the Gardens' "birthplace".

BOTANICAL GARDENS SWINGS INTO SUMMER

CELEBRATING 80 YEARS Everyone is invited to a season of inspiring new events, celebrations, and horticultural highlights. As Ontario moves forward with the Roadmap to Reopen, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is gearing up for an exciting season of 80th anniversary celebrations featuring a lineup of diverse programming and activities. RBG's outdoor garden areas are open and flourishing with summer blooms, while special events including Rock at the Rock and performances at the new Blooms Stage are scheduled to kick off July 8th. putting on a radiant display all summer long — Turner Pavilion Teahouse is now serving grab-and-go fare with prime seating overlooking the cultivated collections at Hendrie Park. Those wanting to stretch their legs can enjoy 27km of scenic hiking trails around Cootes Paradise and Hamilton’s Escarpment that are teeming with birds and wildlife. Visitors can look forward to a season of engaging events, musical concerts, special performances, and the unveiling of the new Healing Garden, coming this August. Join us in the Gardens for a spectacular summer of celebrations! There's always more to see at RBG.

In 1941 the Province of Ontario officially created Royal Botanical Gardens through a special Act that resulted in the development of more display gardens, educational programming, land acquisition and construction of new facilities to attract visitors — the first education and other programs and the creation of a library began in 1947. Each decade that followed marks a significant period of progress in shaping RBG. The 1950s and '60s saw the creation of the Arboretum and surrounding nature trails, Hendrie Park and its iconic gates, RBG Centre and the beginning of major garden areas — the Katie Osbourne Lilac Collection and the Centennial Rose Garden. Conservation efforts were in full swing by the 1970s, with major cleanup projects beginning in Cootes Paradise Marsh, an ongoing challenge that remains one of RBG’s key initiatives to this day and an example of preservation efforts we will carry into the future. RBG is now recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada and part of the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Today, RBG continues its commitment to conservation of the diverse environments in Hamilton and Burlington and stands as a doorway to education, inspiration and action to the natural world. Recent years have seen capital rejuvenation projects, refreshing key garden areas with sustainable and representative designs.
