The 2019 Toronto Caribbean Caribana festival was once again a hit with over a million tourists visiting the city for the August long weekend. Caribana’s signature event was, of course, the Parade which featured over 10,000 masquerades strutting and dancing down Lakeshore Boulevard in elaborate costumes, set to the vibrant Caribbean beats of the famed las bands. Toronto’s Caribbean Caribana festival has grown exponentially since its start in 1967 and is currently North America’s largest cultural festival. What was once a three-day event has now grown into three weeks of celebration, absorbing most of the city with its infectious feel-good vibes.

Ingredients SALAD INGREDIENTS • 2 cups of frozen shelled edamame beans • 2 ears of corn, niblets removed (about 1.5-2 cups or 2 cups frozen corn) • 1 red, yellow, or orange pepper diced small • 2 carrots, shredded • 3 hearts of palm from a can (about 1/2 of a can); cut hearts into rounds • 2 green onions, cut in small rounds
Edamame SUCCOTASH An oldie but a goodie! Don’t you love those recipes that you keep coming back to? I’ve been teaching and making this salad for years because it is the perfect accompaniment to almost any meal or gathering. This salad is incredibly delicious and super versatile. It goes with almost any meal. It is a great salad to bring to a pot luck lunch or dinner, you will be the party favourite for sure! It also keeps very well for 3 days, dressed! Right now is the perfect time to make it. The tomatoes are in full bloom, shape and colour. Use all different colour peppers and of course fresh corn. It is a very easy salad to play with according to your tastes and what you have in your fridge or pantry. The dressing is phenomenal and can be used for leafy salads as well. Serves 8

• 24 cherry tomatoes cut in half or 2 large tomatoes cut in small pieces • 1 romaine heart; about 6-8 crispy leaves, chopped thinly • 2 baby cucumber, diced DRESSING INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup rice vinegar • 1/4 cup neutral oil such as sunflower, grapeseed or avocado • 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce • 1-2 tsp sesame oil • 2 tbsp mirin or lemon juice • 2 tbsp tahini paste
Directions STEP 1. Bring a large pot of water to boil, add a big pinch of salt. Add frozen edamame beans, boil for about 5 minutes or until cooked through. STEP 2. Add the corn to the boiling water with the edamame beans when there is one minute of cooking time left (it cooks very fast). Drain and allow the beans and corn to cool. STEP 3. Toss together all the salad ingredients in a large serving bowl. STEP 4. Mix dressing ingredients together in a medium-size bowl and toss with salad.

Cabbagetown
ART & CRAFTS It was a beautiful day for the annual Cabbagetown Art & Crafts sale which took place during the Cabbagetown Festival weekend. The Cabbagetown Art & Crafts is a not-for-profit corporation which benefits many local charitable organizations in various ways. The aim of CA&C is to encourage appreciation of the visual arts, to give artists a place to sell their work, and to foster community spirit. Exhibitors lined the walkways of Riverdale Park with their tents and tens of thousands of people strolled the walkways to view the wares. All in all, it is a wonderful community event.

SummerWorks is Canada’s largest curated performance festival of theatre, dance, music, live art and interdisciplinary forms. This year’s 11-day Festival featured dozens of unique projects, workshops and nightly parties. They are interested in continuously re-imagining and innovating the possibilities of performance- how it is created, presented and experienced. It was yet again another successful Toronto Fashion Week showcasing fashion, art and culture. The bi-annual event hosted national and international designers, entertainers and the fashion community to create a touchpoint where fashion was embraced and celebrated. As the leading fashion event in Canada, Toronto Fashion Week creates a catalyst for media engagement, retail activity and global connectivity. Over three days, Toronto Fashion Week was packed with exciting Style Art events, fundraising and community initiatives, and thoughtful conversations led by Fashion Talks, City MOGULS and The Brand is Female. The runways at the Fashion House and the Royal Ontario Museum also shined the spotlight on the latest collections from talented designers including celebrated Canadian womenswear designer Lesley Hampton who showcased a beautiful SS20 collection, “The Preface”. Other collections included Maison Elama, Trigère, and Christopher Bates, to name a few.
